What is the 10 Hr Project

• “Collaborative effort from students of different group 4 disciplines (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) to work together on a scientific or technological topic, allowing for concepts and perceptions from across the disciplines to be shared in line with Aim 10”

The Process

• Groups have already been assigned for you…

• Stage 1 – Planning – This will be done over the course of the next week outside of school. The planning phase is perhaps the most important part. You will be required to submit a short (1 paragraph) summary of what you plan to do. Wednesday, October 8th.

• Stage 2 – Experiment – This will be accomplished on the field trip to Mr. Gauck’sFarm. Your job is to develop an experiment that incorporates all 3 disciplines into a mini project.

What is available for us to do?

• Tools available for use…– Water chemistry kits

– Soil ph kits

– Thermometers

– Probeware

– Nets

– Microscopes

– Electronic balances

– Any other tools that need to be available…

Ideas for projects

• Biology and Chemistry

• Measure protist activity within a given sample of water

• Water pH tests to test the effect of pH on aquatic life

• Soil pH tests• Effect of temperature on aquatic life• Estimate the effect of runoff from

road by the pond• Classification of Different plant

species from different areas. • Dichotomous Keys

• Physics• Measure water flow in stream • Measure angle of banks going into

pond/stream and measure the rate at which water flows down differently inclined banks (might affect erosion)

• Estimate percent of ground cover and measure rate of water flow down different surfaces--bare soil, grass cover, leaf cover, gravel, etc.

• Measure clarity of water at different locations (we have a light sensor that goes with the CBL that can do this)

• Estimate hours of sunlight received at different locations based on angle of sun, horizon, embankments, etc.

• Paddle/Lure Construction• Solar bags to discuss Archimedes

Principle

Phase 3 - Evaluation

• The final stage of this project is for your group to summarize, evaluate and present your findings. You will have the following options to perform:

– Research paper

– Poster Presentation

– Powerpoint presentation

** All projects will be due by Friday, October 31 to Mr. Van Roekel**

Reminders:

• MAKE SURE YOU SUBMIT YOUR FIELD TRIP PERMISSION SLIP!!!! YOU MAY NOT GO WITHOUT ONE AND WILL THUS BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING THE SCHOOL IN ORDER TO TAKE THE IB TEST IN THE SPRING!!!!!

• On the day of the trip, please remember to wear old clothes and prepare for cool weather. Bring a small amount of cash ($12) so we can stop for lunch on the way home.
