Good Day Everyone! As I reported in last month’s article, the GHS band performed at the MPA contest last week. I’m happy to announce that the Concert Band received an overall “Excellent” score, while both Sym 1 and Sym 2 Bands received ‘Superior, With Distinction’ honors. Please Join me in congratulating the Directors and the Students for a job well done! They have certainly worked very hard and deserve all the accolades that they have received! I have just a little bit of realistic news on the budget front – not a good subject to discuss, but a necessary one. Fundraising this year has not lived up to our normal expectations and the GBPA Board is working hard to try to get our finances in order for the remainder of the year, as well as set a realistic level of expectation for next year’s budget. We had been doing well with dues, but the upward trend sort of flat-lined a month ago, which has us falling short for the year at this point in time. We still have over $23,000 in unpaid dues that have not been paid and it has really put a dent in our plans for the year. As you can imagine, $23,000 is a lot of money and, without that income, we have been forced to make some hard decisions regarding buses, clinicians, uniforms, etc. And, with the trip to Chattanooga looming in the near future, some hard decisions may have to be made if the deficit continues. I ask that you all review your student’s Charms account for financial information and, if there is a ‘balance due’ amount listed, please do everything possible to catch up on the account. This amount adds up and eventually affects everyone in the band if not paid. On the brighter side of things, we still have one big fundraising event remaining for the year, and with your support, we are hoping it will be a success for the GBPA. A golf tourna- ment will be held at the Municipal Golf Course on South Parkway on Friday, April 17 th . Start time is 8 am and will include prizes for 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd place teams as well as winners for ‘Closet to the Pin’ and ‘Longest Drive’. The tournament will also feature a separate putting contest, so hone up on your putting skills prior to the tournament! We are looking for a few band parents to help out on the day of the tournament with registration and the putting contest, so if you are interested, please let me know. We can definitely use the help! I will be sending out a separate email on this subject, so stayed tuned for more details. In looking forward to the next year, we have formed a nominating committee to help gather names for those people who would like to run for Board of Director positions. Currently, we are looking to fill four positions: President, both Vice Presidents, and one of our Treasurer slots. If someone from the nominating committee calls you to ask for interest, please consider it – you will be making a difference, I promise you! In addition, just seeing the kids perform on the field, on the stage and on whatever trips they may take is a joy in and of itself. The potential names for the vacant positions will be discussed at the next GBPA meeting, which will be held on Monday, March 30 th , so please make plans to attend. Upcoming Important Dates: GBPA meeting: Monday, March 30 th , at 7:00 in the Band Hall. GBPA Fundraiser Golf Tournament, April 17 th at the Muni Golf Course.

A golf tourna-ment will be held at the Municipal Golf Course on South Parkway on Friday, April 17th. Start time is 8 am and will include prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams as well as winners for

‘Closet to the Pin’ and ‘Longest Drive’.

The potential names for the vacant positions will be discussed at the next GBPA meeting, which will be held on Monday, March 30th, so please make plans to attend.

Upcoming Important Dates:

GBPA meeting: Monday, March 30th, at 7:00 in the Band Hall.

GBPA Fundraiser Golf Tournament, April 17th at the Muni Golf Course.

I look forward to seeing you all at the meeting on the 30th. Have a great Spring Break!

Calendar of events and attendance

It is vitally important that you keep up with the calendar of events and rehearsals that have been posted on the band website and Charms since June 1, 2014. We try diligently to get 98% of every-thing on the calendar ASAP (June each year) so everyone can make their plans accordingly as to not interfere with rehearsals and performances.

You can also sync the band calendar to your smartphones. Go to the website www.grissomband.com to see the instructions under Parents/Charms tab. If we make changes it will automatically sync the new information to your calendar! We will be adding dates for the 2015-2016 school year in early June. Please check the band website to see how to sync your phone calendar.

http://www.grissomband.com/charms.html

Remember all after school/evening rehearsals are REQUIRED and part of the student’s grade. We understand family emergencies and sickness. Please refer to the band’s Handbook posted on the band website under the Parents tab for all information regarding attendance.

Charms

Many of you have updated your information in Charms to make it current and we thank you. There are still many who do not have email addresses or they are wrong. This is how we communicate with students and parents. Please go to the website Charms tab under Parents and see how to access your student account to make updates. If you do not know your student ID password please contact any board directors and they can give it to you.

The Grissom Bands had a very successful and rewarding day at their state assessment. Symphonic I and Symphonic II Bands both received a ‘Superior Rating with Distinction’ and Concert Band received an overall rating of ‘Excellent’ with a ‘Superior’ rating in sight reading. A ‘Superior Rating with Distinction’ means the band Received all A’s in ever sub-caption from every judge. We are so proud of the progress of all three bands; for their hard work, dedication and perseverance throughout a difficult February. All three bands were suc-cessful despite many hardships and we thank you!!

Want Your Child to Progress in Band Faster???? Here are some things that will help your young adult to improve their playing skills:

INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE! It’s just like studying. The more quality practice time (individually) that a musician does vastly improves their playing skills. We are continuing to show our stu-dents how and what to do to make their practice time more useful. Naturally if the instrument doesn’t touch their lips or the mallets/sticks don’t touch their hands it’s not going to work.

STUDY PRIVATELY! Students who take private lessons from a qualified instructor will im-prove quicker. The more diligent they are in practicing what their private teacher and band director tell them the better player they will be.

PLAY A TOP QUALITY INSTRUMENT!! We all tend to do things we enjoy!! Playing a quality instrument is much more fun (not to mention MUCH EASIER) than playing one that is a strug-gle. If your child is playing the same instrument that they started on years ago it is probably time to upgrade. Ask Mr. Connell or Mr. Vernon for guidance. THIS IS AN INVESTMENT

IN THE MOST VALUABLE THING IN YOUR LIFE: YOUR CHILD!! Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame Jazz Band Festival

April 10th the “B” Jazz Band will travel to Birmingham, Alabama for the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame Jazz Festival. The band will leave before school that day and return no later than 5:00pm. Cost will be $47 a student. Please make checks out to GBPA. Be sure you check to see if you have any credits added to your account before writing a check. We will take a charter bus not a school bus! Chaperone slots are filled sorry. You are more than welcome to drive down and hear us perform. Times TBA. Spring Concerts

The GHS Band will present their annual spring concert on Thursday, April 23 at 7:00 pm in the auditorium. We will perform our MPA program plus other selections. Matthew Hendrix, a Grissom Band graduate, will be guest conducting on the concert. Please make plans to join us and hear how talented your sons and daughters are! We promise you will be surprised and amazed! The Grissom Jazz Bands and Percussion Ensemble will present their spring concert on Thursday, May 7th at 7:00 pm in the auditorium. Come out for a great evening of jazz and percussion! Dixie Classic Grand National Invitational Concert Band Festival

Grissom Bands will be performing in a NATIONAL symphonic and concert band competition in Tennessee on Saturday, April 25. This is a required performance for everyone in Symphonic I, Symphonic II, and Concert Band. Our bands have been very successful in the Festival in the past (3 National Championships) and we hope to continue that success. Bands throughout the country will be competing. There is a $45 fee due April 1 to cover the festival cost per student plus help a little with the charter buses. Make checks out to Grissom BPA. This is not an overnight trip.

UNIFORMS

We are in full swing of concert season with MPA behind and Dixie Classic just a few weeks ahead. Just some reminders about uniform dress. Guys must have tall black socks to wear with their black dress shoes. Girls should have black tights and black dress shoes with a small heel—please no tall heels for obvious reasons. Earrings and nail polish should be removed prior to the concert. If you have single pearl earrings or a single string pearl necklace those may be worn.

Prom is approaching fast and we are going to try something new this year as a fundraiser. Guys, you can rent your tuxedo from the band for a small fee of $30! This money will go into the uniform budget (not to the Hawaii trip as stated before). There is a waiver for tux rental which must be signed by the student and guardian. The waiver must be turned in no later than April 3. You can print the waiver from the newsletter (see page 13), or pick one up in the band room. Please turn in money and form in the designated envelope on the library doors. Thank you.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us: Anna and Beverly, Uniform Committee [email protected]

SPIRIT WEAR Warm weather will be here before you know it! Stay cool in Grissom Band spirit wear. We now have basketball shorts and t-shirts in black or orange. Email [email protected] to place an order.

NOTES FROM THE TREASURERS

Easter and Mother’s Day are just around the corner, scrip is a great way to support the band and provide that someone special with a nice evening out or gift.

There are many local merchants who participate in the Scrip program. If there is a store that you shop at frequently, you should check the merchant lists posted on the Grissom Band web-site http://www.grissomband.com/fundraisersspirit.html to see if they are a part of the pro-gram. We keep a variety of Scrip merchant cards on hand, but there are hundreds of merchants that participate, and I typically place orders a couple of times a month. So, if you know that you always go to Rosie’s on Saturday night or you always go to Wal-Mart to buy your gas, contact me and purchase some Scrip cards to keep on hand for those trips. If you already plan to fre-quent any of the participating merchants, why not do it with Scrip cards to generate money for the band and your student’s account?

Here’s how the program works. The Great Lakes Scrip Center sells gift cards to the band at less than face value. The band then sells the gift cards at face value. How does that help you? When you purchase one of these gift cards, you designate your student to receive the credit. The band takes the money that they made from the sale of the gift card and splits that profit with 40% going to your designated student’s account and 60% going to the band general fund. The amount will vary by merchant and some are more generous than others. It may not seem like a lot when you look at it on a card by card basis, but the more you buy, the quicker it will add up.

In-stock Scrip News: Subway cards are now up to 6% rebate, Amazon Scrip works with GHS Band AmazonSmile, we now carry Honey Baked Ham Scrip cards

Contact Bill McMahon at [email protected] or 256-527-9454 for more information or to order your scrip today.

Scrip News

You can look at the status of your account in CHARMS. Statements were also emailed out re-cently. If you have money in the Miscellaneous Ledger, it can be used toward your band fees. If there is money listed under fundraising, it has already been allocated to your student either on the miscellaneous ledger or through Gateway for the Hollywood Trip (unfortunately, we have not been able to remove the amounts from some of the fundraising ledgers.)

A couple of easy ways to help out the band:

1. If you or your family members or friends shop at Publix, pick up a Grissom Band tag at the next Band Parent meeting and use it when you shop at Publix. You can also ask them at the register at Publix and they have a tag there that they can scan to give credit to the band.

2. If you shop at amazon.com, log in through smile.amazon.com and select Virgil I Grissom High School Band Parents as the organization that you are supporting. Every time you shop through smile.amazon.com, the band receives a credit.

Debbie Searcy, Grissom Band Co-Treasurer

As we approach the end of the school year, ALL band fees, instrument rental fees, and trip fees MUST be paid. April 1 is the deadline for the Dixie Classic Festival fee of $45. All other fees should also be paid by that time. The band cannot operate without the funds from these fees. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in paying them in a timely manner. Payments can be made in the Treasurer’s Box in the band room, by mailing to Grissom Band, P.O. Box 4335, Huntsville 35815, or through Paypal (using CHARMS).

earn credits toward band fees by volunteering at von braun civic center

concessions areas!

Open to students 16+, parents, grandparents and anyone interested in earning credits for their student.

Please feel free to contact Melanie Griffin ~ VBC Coordinator at [email protected] to volunteer or ask any questions.

HOW IT WORKS… At the beginning of each month a VBC event schedule will be sent to

the parents via email. Let me know what days and times you are available to volunteer in the

concessions area. I will pass that information on to the VBC scheduler. You will be notified when the VBC scheduler has selected you for an

event time. Every hour you volunteer ~your student receives $5.00 credit toward

band fees!! “RULES OF THE ROAD”

Student has to be 16 or over Dress is black pants and black shirt, closed toed shoes. Hair has to be put up if it is long. As a lot of parents like to work the same shift as their child please let

me know who is related. Also, let me know which volunteers are over 21 and which ones aren't. The volunteers have to adhere to the rules of the VBC, if at any time

they do not then the supervisor can send them home and ask them not to return.
