In fact it already has been. Last week the people of the world witnessed a momen tous occasion when Barack Obama be came the first African American elected to be president of the United States. I was excited to see how music played a big role in this year’s election. Check out the “Yes We Can” video from our In the Booth section on page three. Please continue to vote and be inspired by the power of mu sic throughout the world. Peace and Blessings, Ashley Smith HipHop’s Growing Pains Ludacris’s Political Tantrum By Chris Anderson, VP of Marketing Operations Former NYC Hot 97 radio personality Fat Man Scoop voiced a strong sense of reasoning to the hip hop community through VIBE magazine’s editorial staff stating, “We can’t make records calling Hillary Clinton a b***h. Every rapper should just back away until November. And then we can make any remix we want.” Scoop’s reasoning was a direct response to southern rapper Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges less than Shakespearean jump off to Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s vie to become the first African American nominee of the Democratic party. A starch supporter of Senator Obama, Ludacris vocalized his support via the track “Politics: Obama is Here”. In the song, Ludacris staunchly refers to New York senator Hillary Clinton, as an "irrelevant b***h." The rapper also takes aim at John McCain in the song, saying the Arizona senator "don't belong in any chair unless he's paralyzed." Obama campaign spokesman, Bill Burton quickly denounced the song stating, "This song is not only outrageously offensive to Senator Clinton, Reverend Jackson, Senator McCain, and President Bush, it is offensive to all of us who are trying to raise our children with the values we hold dear.” Many within the urban community agree with Burton’s response, but there is hope for hip hop. The hope is that their expressive political offering will evolve throughout this most important historic part of America’s history. You can Vote However You Like Promoting Political Awareness By Hope Hyder, VP of Business Development When rapper T.I. recorded the single, “Whatever You Like,” he had no idea that it would become a framework for political discourse. That’s just what happened when a debate class at The Ron Clark Academy, an elementary school in Atlanta, Georgia created “You Can Vote However You Like”. It is a rap song like no other that utilizes the music of T.I.’s hit to promote the issues of the 2008 Presidential Election. Award winning educator and author Ron Clark established the school in June 2007. The Academy presents a new paradigm for learning where every classroom has computer technology. The school even has a recording studio where students learn music production and music is regularly used as a teaching tool in various subjects. By using a popular tune (currently #2 on Billboards Hot 100 Chart) students were able to promote their message in a nontraditional way. Their project is a reminder that Hip Hop is a powerful medium that can be harnessed to transmit any message. The song has taken the students to every major television network and exposed millions more to the issues raised in the song. One YouTube video of the class performing their song has received over one million hits. Hopefully educators are taking a very close look at The Ron Clark Academy. Hip Hop Artists should take notice as well and remember that music has the power to transform lives for the better.
