School Information Calendar for 2016 (Dates may vary)

Term One 2016

This year has begun exceptionally smoothly due to the

planning and dedication of a very professional

Greenwood College staff. As a new Principal to the

College my reflections are that the school shows a warm

and greeting nature to the newly arrived staff and

students and this was strongly confirmed by the parents in

attendance at the Year 7 evening barbecue recently. The

attendance on the occasion was tremendous and

reflected the sentiment of the parents in attendance and

the dedicated and hard work of the staff in planning the

event.

New and Returning Staff

Our ever expanding college warmly welcomes the

following new staffers: Mr Gannaway (D&T), Mrs Macoboy

(Science), Ms Silvestrin (Media), Ms Cook (Art), Mrs

Mohamed (Dance), Mrs Williamson (Home Ec), Mr

Walczak (PE), Mr Kristoff (English), Mrs Vitullo (Library), Mrs

Del Borrello (EA), Ms Soliman (IEC/PE) and returning staff

Mr Horner (IEC), Ms Thompson (PE), and Mr Jones (Maths).

Students

Likewise the students at the school are warm and gracious

in their greetings. The school is to be commended for the

respectful behaviour our students display. The focus put to

the staff and students for this term is ―Expect Respect‖. I

do believe that this is already inherent in the school but

we will continue to reinforce it over the term.

2015 Year 12s

Last year’s Year12 students performed very well in their

final assessments in both the ATAR and the VET student

categories. The high achievers will be recognised as

special guests in the full school assembly later this term. In

addition the school is examining targets to see the current

students perform at a similar if not higher level. Support

programs for the Year 12 students and those approaching

OLNA and Naplan testing are currently being arranged.

The Year 12 students have been informed through an

assembly this week of the support on offer and I would

encourage every student to avail themselves of this

support.

Communication

The contact I have had with

the parents this year has been

glowing of the school and this

is wonderful. However, if you

have any concerns with

regard to your chi ld’s

education or any school

based issues then can I

encourage you to contact us.

We can only act on what we

know. The Year Coordinator for

your son/daughter’s year group

would be a good contact to have. If you have made

contact and feel unhappy with the outcome then I would

encourage you to make contact with me and I am

confident we will get any concerns sorted. There will be an

Interim Reporting Open Day on the 5th April and please

put that in your diary now but don’t wait til then if you

have concerns about the progress of your child at the

school.

Maintenance/Upgrades

There were some issues with the airconditioning over the

really hot few days we had. The evaporative

airconditioning struggled. The matter has been addressed

and I have been given assurances that the units have

been upgraded or repaired. We are continuing the

wonderful work of focusing on minor upgrades around the

school this year. In addition there is a drive to seek

approval and funding for a new school gymnasium. This

will take time but with the support of the Andrea Mitchell,

School Board and the P&C we can be optimistic of the

decision around the time of the next State Government

Budget.

In Closing

All the best for the year and I look forward to meeting

more parents and students as the year progresses.

Principal’s Message

”Self confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings” - Samuel Jackson

Greenwood College February 2016 Page 3

Last year we started publishing on Moodle for students in any Maths course:

their year program with assessment schedules

copies of the relevant chapters in the text (for years 7-10)

homework exercises

all free of charge !

This year you will find the number of courses featured on Moodle is greatly increased. Not

only that but many have past assessments included too.

The upper school ATAR courses have past exam papers and sometimes tests too for your

young person to practise. More may have been added by the time you read this!

To access these go to http://moodle.greenwood.wa.edu.au/login/index.php

Have your child sign in with their school network user name and password, and then go to the relevant Mathematics

course.

We hope this will help you keep in touch with what your child is doing in Maths. If you want you can always help them

with their homework! Lower school Nelson homework exercises also give explanations before questions, so this is not as

difficult as it may sound!

Incidentally, each student’s fluency in numeracy can be greatly improved by Mathletics interactive software. Your

child has a user name and logon for this too, courtesy of Greenwood College. Please contact me or your child’s

teacher with any queries or concerns with this.

Upper School

I would like to thank upper school students for the standard and tone they have set in the

school. With the influx of 170 Year 7 students, the upper school students have been

patient and supportive.

Upper school students have settled down quickly and changes to courses must be

finalised by Week 4 Term one this year. From time to time, changes are made but these

are in very extreme circumstances.

Year 12 students are fully aware that they have virtually only three terms in which to

complete their courses and attain their Western Australian Certificate of Education

(WACE).

Year 12 students and parents need to note that Semester 2 exams are conducted during

week 1 (Practical exams WACE) and week 2 Greenwood College mock exams during the October holidays from

Monday 26 September to Friday 7 October 2016.

Assessment Policy

Within the diary issued to all students is the Greenwood College Assessment Policy. Students should be familiar with

that policy as it is a support mechanism for graduation and the attainment of WACE. Greenwood is insistent that all

assessments must be completed by students allowing exceptions in extenuating circumstances only. A directive from

the Director General of Education is that ―going away on holiday is not an excuse for missing assessments‖.

Year 11 and 12 students in ATAR courses are reminded that Semester one exams will be held in Term two during Week

six from Monday 30 May to Friday 3 June 2016.

Students should be studying for those exams now and ATAR students should be completing a minimum of three hours

per session, six times per week as a rough guide of what is expected, discriminating between homework and study.

All students must hand in assessable work punctually to avoid possible penalties.

Year 10

Planning for Year 10 student courses in 2017 has commenced and there will be a Parent Night for Year 10 student’s

next term informing them of the process for upper school selection. As a general rule, students need to be attaining

A/B grades in the core areas if hoping to pursue a full ATAR course in Year 11. When making subject selections in Year

10, it is more realistic to choose subjects based on demonstrated ability and commitment rather than perceived

potential.

Some Year 10 students will be completing OLNA tests this term, which is a prerequisite for Graduation and in week 5 of

next term they will have exams in selected courses. All students must take OLNA very seriously and students intending

to select ATAR courses will need to perform well in exams so commence studying for them now.

I wish all students a successful year and the more students get involved in school activities, the more

enjoyable it will be.

Student attendance procedures

Greenwood College recognises that punctuality and regular attendance at school is a major factor affecting student

academic success. The College therefore adopts a zero tolerance approach to unexplained absences and lateness.

These procedures are used to guarantee the safety of your children as well as to support your children's educational

progress.

Parents and students are reminded that all absences must be explained by parents using any ONE of the following

methods; a note, a phone call, an email or by direct contact. Notes must state a legitimate reason for the absence,

the date of the absence and must be signed by a parent or guardian.

Parents are advised that they are not authorised to give their children permission to stay at home from school without

a valid reason. The College is required by the Department of Education to seek verification from parents if their child

does not bring a note explaining absences after arriving back at school.

Lateness to school

Students who arrive late to school cause unnecessary clerical work and disrupt

care group and classes. The reasons for lateness vary greatly but those that are

unexplained, or are for unsatisfactory reasons, will be dealt with in a systematic

and consistent manner.

Students who are late to school without an acceptable reason, provided by

parent note, phone call or SMS to the school will be placed into lunch detention. If

the Care Group bell has sounded, students must report to the reception area

absentee desk and will then be referred to the relevant deputy principal or

Student Services Manager, to explain their absence and receive a lunch detention notice. Teachers will not allow late

students into class without a formal late note. Failure to attend lunch detention will result in more serious

consequences.

Parents taking their children out of school for holidays

Parents are advised that the Department of Education has formally notified

schools that student absences caused by the taking of holidays during the

school term, are regarded as ―unauthorised absences‖ unless the absence

has been pre-approved by the school principal and the principal is satisfied

that reasonable grounds for authorising the absence exist.

In this case, the College will use the absentee code, K = students whose

parents have taken them on an in-term holiday and the principal has not

authorised the absence.

Where permission to take a holiday during the school term has been pre-

approved by the school principal, the school will use the absentee code, V =

the absence has been negotiated in advance and the principal is satisfied

that reasonable grounds for authorising the absence apply.

If the approved absence extends beyond the negotiated number of days,

and no acceptable reason is provided, the additional absences should be recorded with an X (unacceptable

reason).

Children who become sick during school hours

Greenwood College uses an effective means of managing student illness, whilst at school, developed over many

years of experience. Students MUST NOT contact their parents independently, by mobile phone, to inform them that

they are sick. Students are regularly informed by the college that the correct procedure is for them to attend the First

Aid Officer, allow them to determine the validity of the illness, have the First Aid Officer contact their parents, if

required, and then obtain an official leave form. This proven method guarantees that all parties are kept informed,

that minimum time is wasted, that absentee records are up to date, prevents students from truanting for trivial reasons

and ensures that appropriate medical care is provided.

Students who SMS or ring their parents requesting them to pick them up from school, undermine these established

and efficient procedures which are designed to minimise disruptions to parents, staff and the students’ learning

programs. If parents do receive phone calls or SMS messages from their children, please remind your child, of the

college’s clearly advertised procedures and instruct them to attend the First Aid Officer for proper assessment.

Parents are requested to support the college’s efforts to properly manage student illness and prevent students missing

school for trivial reasons by phoning the college first if their children contact them regarding illness. The college can

then inform parents of the exact nature of the illness, the medical aid required and whether or not they are required

to attend the college to remove their children from classes.

Parents are encouraged to contact the college if they have any questions regarding the college’s absentee

procedures.

2016 started with a lot of excitement and anticipation with the arrival of our Year 7s. The

first few weeks have been all about their transition into high school. We suspended

classes for the first two weeks and they were exposed to a number of different

workshops and concepts. From a Student Services perspective we were able to be out

and about during recess and lunch and introduce ourselves and observe them mingle

and get to know one another. We spent a glorious day at the Great Escape on the 5

February and it was amazing

to see how many of the students had already settled and had made a whole lot of

new friends. We all left feeling relaxed albeit a bit sunburned.

One of the highlights of the school calendar is always the Year 7

―Welcome BBQ‖ and this year we broke all records regarding

attendance. I think it being a 42 degree day may have motivated

some to spend the afternoon in the pool. This is a wonderful casual

opportunity to see

staff, students and

parents get to

know one another

and have a

chance to chat about any questions or queries they may have as

well as give our students another opportunity to socialise together.

We will be running breakfast club again this year and it will be

outside Student Services on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We are blessed this year to have City Youth from

Kingdom City come in once a month on a Friday to cook and serve pancakes which is always a big hit with our

students. City Youth have been coming into our school over the past few years to serve our community and they run a

youth group in Wangara every Friday night. All students in Years 7–12 are welcome to attend. Johnnie and Paul are

co-ordinating the program and so if you have any questions please feel free to call me and I will give you their

contact numbers.

They have a very exciting term planned:

The Department of Education has introduced a new requirement for all students who wish to receive a West Australian

Certificate of Education (WACE) from secondary school at the end of Year 12 to have achieved a certain standard of

literacy and numeracy, which is Band 8 in the Naplan tests.

Students who have already achieved this standard in the Year 7 or 9 Naplan tests, will be exempted from the

requirement to complete the OLNA testing program

The OLNA testing program is scheduled for current Year 10, 11 and 12 students from Tuesday 8 March - Thursday 24

March 2016 at Greenwood College.

Students will be informed by their class teachers if they are required to participate in any part of the testing program

and will be provided with a testing timetable.

It is extremely important for parents and students to note that for almost all students, no exemptions from the testing will

be allowed by the Department of Education for students who have not achieved the required standards of literacy

and numeracy.

Students who fail to demonstrate the required literacy and numeracy standards which have been set at Band 8 in the

relevant Naplan tests, will be required to sit the OLNA testing in March and September each year, until the required

standard is reached.

Failure to reach this standard by the conclusion of Year 12, will mean that a student cannot receive the WACE or

qualify for secondary graduation.

All OLNA testing will be conducted online in the College’s computer labs and consist of:

One fifty minute multiple choice reading test.

One fifty minute multiple choice numeracy test.

One sixty minute extended writing response.

Students are only permitted to take pens, pencils, erasers and spare paper into the tests but NO calculators,

dictionaries, mobile phones, or thesauruses. Use of online help software such as Google or spellcheckers will NOT be

permitted.

Any breaches of these conditions will result in a student being withdrawn from that test and deemed to have failed.

Students who are not required to sit the OLNA tests will continue with their normal school program.

Should you have any further questions related to the operation of the OLNA testing program at Greenwood College or

your child’s involvement, please contact the College for further information.

Congratulations! Students of the Week

The IEC has had a very busy start to the year. We have increased our enrolments and our

classes are now fully operational. Our excellent reputation and unique program has

ensured an increasing number of students referred to us from other metropolitan schools

for students who are new to Australia and require English as an additional language

support. IEC students’ countries of origin this year are: China, Vietnam, Philippines, Mali,

Macedonia, Thailand, Congo, Japan, Bhutan, Sudan, Hong Kong, India, Brazil, Cambodia

and Ukraine.

This year we welcome back Mr Leonard Horner into the IEC. Mr Horner has spent the past

year teaching English in China with the British Council and has had a very rewarding

experience living and teaching in China. We also welcome back Mrs Clare Hawkins who

returns to the IEC from Greenwood College English Department and Mrs Hala Soliman who

has taken on some IEC classes and mainstream Health and Phys. Ed classes.

We are looking forward to another IEC camp in October and a number of excursions throughout the year. Keep an

eye on the school notices for our welcome to the IEC BBQ for our new families and continuing families, and take the

opportunity to meet IEC staff and students.

We wish our community all the best for another successful and productive school year.

As we approach the half-way point of the Term, I must commend the Year 7s for the way

that they have adopted the ethos of Greenwood College and fitted in with the school

community.

On Monday 1st February we welcomed 170 new bright eyed students to the College. There

were at times confusion, lost students and anxieties that come with transitioning to

secondary school. However, it was not too long before new friendships were made and

grips on the school map were loosened.

The first two weeks of Term focused on student’s transition to high school, getting used to

the structure of their timetables and becoming familiar with the level of organisation

required to get you from class to class with all the equipment you need. Students in this time

also underwent academic testing to appropriately place them in the correct pathways.

Classroom teachers have given praise to the way the Year 7s conducted themselves in

class and adjusted to the way things are done at the College.

Friday of Week one all Year 7 students were off to the Great Escape in Hillarys. With students

coming to Greenwood from over 30 different primary schools it gave the students a chance

to form new friendships in one of the most fun settings in Perth. Again, students represented the College in a way that

made staff at the College very proud. A good day was had by all. Hopefully all students arrived home with their

sugar rush on the decline and with their faces unburnt by the sun.

Last Tuesday we hosted the annual Year 7 ―Welcome‖ BBQ, this year being the biggest turn out to date. It provided

parents and teachers an opportunity to meet under social circumstances by the pool. With each Head of Learning

area in attendance, Student Services staff and Principal Mr Johnston there to represent the school, hopefully most

parents had the opportunity to ask any questions they may have had. A special thank you must go out to the staff

from Physical Education for providing supervision by the pool and all the staff that attended.

Students as of Week 3 have been given their timetable for the semester. With classes in full swing and first week jitters

well and truly over I look forward to my time as Year 7 coordinator of this wonderful co-hort. I also want to thank all

the Year 7 House Captains for their nominations and congratulate successful applicants who will go on to represent

their House. Now that students are more familiar with each other we will soon be sending out expressions of interest

for Year 7 Councillors who will have an important role in assemblies and as the voice of the co-hort.

Keep up the good work Year 7s and I look forward to getting to know you all a little better! Feel free to e-mail me any

questions or concerns about your student throughout the year.

Welcome back everyone to a wonderful new year. We hope you enjoyed the holidays

and are ready for the hard work ahead as we begin our second year at Greenwood

College as seasoned year 9s.

We are your Year 9 councillors for this year - Simone Priestley and Jake Bright.

Jake: I am happy to be back in the position of student councillor for this year and will

try to make this year a good one for you guys.

Simone: Hello I am Simone Priestley and I’m very honoured to be in the position of Student Councillor for 2016.

We both firmly believe that last year was a pleasant start to our high school lives and this one will be just as good.

The most anticipated event for the year is also our first - the Year 9 Camp, taking place in Week seven (March 14-16).

We can guarantee you that it will be an amazing experience for all. With activities such as bike riding, rock climbing,

archery and abseiling, who would want to miss it?

Paperwork for the camp goes out this week and by the time you read this, we will be only days away from the camp,

so make sure to return all your permission documents and camp payments as soon as possible!

Thanks everyone and best of luck in the new academic year!

Year 9— Simone Priestley and Jake Bright

Year 10—Taylor Waterson and Rhys Wooollard

Year 8—Kailyn Smith and Ethan Roth

Hello and welcome back everyone!

2016 has started and we’ve had a great couple of weeks of school and we are settling

into our second year of high school in Year 8. We are your new Student Councillors for

2016 and hope you will come to us and help us with suggestions along the year ahead.

The first suggestion we need is the for the River Cruise which is coming up shortly.

Planning is well underway and we are sure it will be awesome but we need a ―theme‖ suggestion/or do we go

with casual/free-dress. Your input is vital in determining which way we go, so please see us or Mr Bassanelli with

your thoughts/suggestions.

We hope you have adjusted to your new timetables and have settled in with new classmates and some new

teachers. To all the new Year 8 students who arrived for the first time this year to Greenwood College, Welcome!

We have a new principal too, Mr Johnston—so to all those new Year 8 students, there are a lot of teachers and a

principal learning the ropes too!

Another thing that is new is the House System. We can earn House points at the Year Assembly by the same system

(raffle) last year. When your name is pulled from the pile by Mr Bassanelli, you have a chance of winning a point

for your House.

So keep up your attendances, homework and friendly demeanour and have a great Term one…. ENJOY!

Bye for now Kailyn and Ethan

Hello and welcome back to school, I hope you all enjoyed your holidays and are

feeling refreshed for the upcoming year. My name is Rhys Woollard and I am your

new Year 10 Student Councillor. I will try to represent you as best I can throughout

the year. This is a very important year for us, especially academically as we

transition to upper school. I’m sure you all understand this and are working hard to

achieve the best results. We have this term to look forward to our Interhouse School

Swimming Carnival which is fast approaching and will be held on the 4th

of March for Year 9/10. A great way to

start the long weekend. We hope to achieve full participation at this event and we’re sure it’ll be a great day.

Hello, my name is Taylor Waterson and I am the new Year 10 Student Councillor for 2016. I am here to represent

my fellow peers as best I can and to set a good example for the younger years. I am hoping to encourage our year

to be the best it can be and to get all standards up as high as possible. This is an important year for us, so we need

to take it seriously.

Another upcoming event is the Year 10 Outdoor Education excursion to Rottnest Island on the 1st

(Tuesday) and

the 3rd

(Thursday) of March 2016. It should be a great day out with the main activity being snorkelling. Many of

us are very excited to go and look forward to our first Outdoor Ed. excursion for this year. In saying that, I’m

hoping we get some nice weather for the day trip, as swimming in rain wouldn’t be very pleasant.

Year 12—Carys Hunter and Bogdan Rabulea

IEC—Luisa Puliafito and Andrea Perego

Hello, my name is Luisa Puliafito. I am a student in 4.2 class at Greenwood College

Intensive English centre. I came with my whole family from Sicily, which is an island

found in south Italy a year ago. I have been attending the I.E.C. for 8 months. My

family is composed up of my parents and two brothers. One brother is older than me

and one is younger than me. The older brother Silvestro goes to Greenwood College

with me and the younger brother Leonardo goes to Primary School.

Hello my name is Andrea Perego. I’m nearly 14 years old and I come from Monza in northern Italy, a small city

not as big as Perth. I came to Australia 6months ago. My mum’s name is Florence and my dad’s name is Luca. I

have two brothers the oldest is 18 years old and the other is 3 years old. My dad and mum work in the catering

industry. We are your new respresentatives in IEC. We hope to meet you all soon.

Hello, my name is Samantha Saunders and I’m the female Student Councillor for

Year 11. I have attended Greenwood since Year 8 in 2013. During the past three

years I have been a student of the Dance and Cheerleading program that the

college offers. During 2016, I have committed myself to five ATAR subjects. I’m very

excited and committed to being your representative and intend to try my hardest to

make the year enjoyable for our entire year group.

Hey, my name is Jacob Bulliard and I am one of the Year 11 Student Councillors representing our Year 11

group. As some of you might not know me, I have been attending Greenwood College since Year 8 and plan to

continue my education at Greenwood until I graduate in Year 12. My interests include surfing, ice hockey,

basketball, AFL and music.

We’d like to welcome all new Year 11 students starting this year at Greenwood College. They are Jason Beaver,

Matthew Billingham, Charlotte Bolt, Dut Mathiang and Laura Henderson.

This year we have formed five committees—Leavers Assembly, Year 11 Formal, Leavers Jackets, Ball and Year book.

As well as Jacob and myself, there are also three Year 11 Representatives who are Reikki Newman, Emma-Lee

Webster and Baylee Alexander. Everyone is very excited about the year ahead and we are happy to be given the

opportunity to showcase our leadership skills through this opportunity.

Welcome back staff and students!

We would like to personally wish a very warm welcome to Mr Johnston as the new

principal of Greenwood College and to all the new staff members. Many thanks Mr

Johnston for stepping in, taking us under his tutelage and meeting with us every

Wednesday morning in regards with school business. We are looking forward to working

with him and together making 2016 a memorable one.

A special welcome to 2016 to our fellow Year 12s. It is our final year so let’s make the most of it. This first term started

out on a high with our first pizza lunch. It was a complete success, we are glad people have enjoyed it and

fortunately there are more to come.

We are all excited for the Greenwood College Ball on the 18 March at AQWA. Make sure all payments and forms are

in by the 26 February to guarantee you a spot in the what promises to be a night to remember. The Committee is

working tirelessly every day to make this an amazing Ball filled with many surprises.

Leavers Jackets have been long awaited and we are all saddened when we found out that we needed to wait

more. However, with patience, they will finally be here on the first week of March. Wear your jacket with honour and

be proud of being a Year 12 but remember to act responsibly around the school and to be a great example to the

other students who are all looking up to us.

It’s been a promising start and we are glad to see everyone working to the best of their abilities in order to achieve

the grades they require. Attendance has been great so far and we hope this will continue for the rest of the year.

Good luck to everyone in their studies and may you all perform splendidly. Enjoy this year to the maximum, make new

friends and be proud of your achievements.

You all deserve it!

Vocational Education Training

It has been a hectic few weeks in the VET area but things are starting to settle down. Year

11 and 12 students who gained external TAFE courses have all started and we wish them

the best as TAFE students for their one or two days. Year 12 Workplace Learning students

started in Week 3 of this term and again we wish them the best. Year 11 WPL students have

nearly all been interviewed regarding their industry placement in Week 3 of next term.

I have had a ―chat‖ with the Year 7s during their S&E time trying to give them a bit of an

idea about the College’s big picture with their academic pathways and choices that will

present themselves in the coming years.

Well done to the following students who have started their TAFE courses (apologies to those

students that may not be on the list):

Australia Volleyball Schools Cup 2015 Results

Greenwood College sent two teams over to the Australia Volleyball Schools Cup,

Melbourne in December 2015 to compete against schools from across Australia and New

Zealand. The athletes had an experience of a lifetime improving their volleyball game as

well as getting to know the ins and outs of the city of Melbourne. Highlights include:

Flying out to Melbourne and many students experiencing their first time away from home without their families.

Enjoying the accommodation at Whitley College complete with table tennis, a pool table, a massive screen to

play Xbox and PlayStation, basketball court and a lovely courtyard to relax in the unusually steady Victoria

gorgeous weather.

Participating in a photo scavenger hunt around the Melbourne CBD, where the U15 Division III girls won handily

over the U17 Division III boys due to the creativity of their photo submissions.

Jake Bright dazzling onlookers and receiving joyous rounds of applause by playing Adele’s ―Someone Like You‖ on

the piano at the Queen Victoria Markets.

A student leaving their bag on one of the trams (complete with Christmas presents and an iPad) and having a

good samaritan turn it in so we were able to collect it later that day.

Playing in the State Volleyball Centre and Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre surrounded by hundreds of

teams and 5000 other high school volleyball competitors.

Results

U17 Division III boys – 4th place, 5 wins 3 losses

U15 Division III girls – 14th place, 3 wins 6 losses

A huge thank you to Mitchell Collins and Nicole Leighton, who were fabulous head coaches and trip leaders for both

teams and made the entire experience one that the players still cannot stop talking about!

2016 Parent Information Night & Greenwood College Volleyball Alumni Game

Any Greenwood College volleyball players, including ALL students who participate in training, in-class sessions AND/OR

out-of-school tournaments of past and present, are eligible to attend the AVSC Melbourne Tour in 2016. We will be

holding a sausage sizzle fundraiser for the Melbourne Tour as well a Greenwood Volleyball Alumni Volleyball Game

with former students who currently play SuperLeague volleyball (highest level of volleyball in WA). All participating

alumni attended the AVSC Melbourne while they were students at Greenwood College and would love to share their

experiences with students and parents alike.

Term 1 Morning Trainings

Starting Week 2 (8 February), we have resumed morning trainings for our athletes. There is a slightly different format this

term as we are focusing on both positions and game play. Most of our Year 7-9 students are practicing a variety of

different positions so I encourage attendance in any/all areas that they would like to improve in. Schedule is as

follows:

Greenwood College has a fully functioning Health Centre. All sick and injured students are to

go directly to the Health Centre NOT to the Administration Office.

The Health Centre is a separate building located just passed Student Services towards the

Maths Department. Entry is via the 3rd Door into the Waiting Room.

Attending First Aid Officers are as follows:

Panadol

Panadol will only be given to students in an EMERGENCY and with consent from their parents/guardian. It is far more

important to investigate WHY the student may have pain than automatically resort to painkillers. For example: It has

been noted that many students have been presenting with headaches and requesting Panadol, however when

asked if they have had anything to eat or drink the reply is often NO. It is extremely important to feed and hydrate

your body in order for it to function effectively! One of the common side effects of dehydration is a HEADACHE! You

should consult your doctor if your headaches or pain persists. Taking a painkiller for headaches or migraines too often

or for too long can actually make the headaches worse. Any ongoing medical issues that require regular medication

should be discussed with the school in order to arrange appropriate management.

Sick Days

Greenwood College uses an effective means of managing student illnesses, whilst at school, developed over many

years of experience, however some students prefer to undermine this system by contacting their parents

independently, by mobile phone, to inform them that they are sick. Students are regularly informed by the

school that the correct procedure is for them to attend the Health Centre, allow the First Aid Officers to determine the

validity of the illness, have the First Aid Officer contact their parents if required and then obtain an official leave

form. This proven method guarantees that all parties are kept informed, that minimum time is wasted, that absentee

records are up to date, prevents students from truanting for trivial reasons and ensures that appropriate medical care

is provided.

Students who SMS or ring their parents requesting them to pick them up from school, undermine these established and

efficient procedures which are designed to minimise disruptions to parents, staff and the students’ learning

programs. If parents do receive phone calls or SMS messages from their children, please remind your child, of the

school’s clearly advertised procedures and instruct them to attend the nurse for proper assessment.

Parents are requested to support the school’s efforts to properly manage student illness and prevent students missing

school for trivial reasons by phoning the school first if their children contact them regarding illness. The school can then

inform parents of the exact nature of the illness, the medical aid required and whether or not they are required to

attend the school to remove their children from classes.

The House System officially went live on

Tuesday 9 February! Our House Captains

and Vice Captains worked hard during

Weeks 1 and 2 designing the House

Notice Board, formulating plans to

increase student involvement and

working together to inform the

Greenwood College student community

of ways to earn house points throughout

the school year. There are five categories that students can earn house points –

academics, attendance, behaviour, extra-curricular activities and sport carnivals.

Examples of points include top Care Group attendance, participating in Drama, Music,

Sport, Dance activities outside of school, top student in each class per term and so on. Our students can earn points

in so many ways and the staff looks forward to see which group will become House Champion in 2016!
