In view of Labor Day, I think it is timely for us to read these excerpts taken from The pastoral constitution on the Church in the modern world of the 2nd Vatican Council (Gaudium et spes. n. 33-39)

Fr. Ian Man’s Activity Throughout The World

Through his labors and his native endowments man has ceaselessly striven to better his life. Today, however, especially with the help of science and technology, he has extended his mastery over nearly the whole of na-ture and continues to do so. Hence many benefits once looked for, especially from heavenly powers, man has now enterprisingly procured for himself. This human activity accords with God's will. Christians are convinced that the triumphs of the human race are a sign of God's grace and the flowering of His own mysterious design. Human activity, to be sure, takes its significance from its relationship to man. Just as it proceeds from man, so it is ordered toward man. For when a man works he not only alters things and society, he develops himself as well. A man is more precious for what he is than for what he has. Christ's Church, trusting in the design of the Creator, acknowledges that human progress can serve man's true happiness, yet she cannot help echoing the Apostle's warning: "Be not conformed to this world" (Rom. 12:2). Here by the world is meant that spirit of vanity and malice which transforms into an instrument of sin those human energies intended for the service of God and man. We are taught that God is preparing a new dwelling place and a new earth where justice will abide, and whose blessedness will answer and surpass all the longings for peace which spring up in the human heart. Therefore, while we are warned that it profits a man nothing if he gain the whole world and lose himself, the expectation of a new earth must not weaken but rather stimulate our concern for cultivating this one. For here grows the body of a new human family, a body which even now is able to give some kind of foreshadowing of the new age. Hence, while earthly progress must be carefully distinguished from the growth of Christ's kingdom, to the extent that the former can contribute to the better ordering of human society, it is of vital concern to the King-dom of God.

September 2/3, 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Parishes will be taking up the National Collection for the Catholic University of America during Labor Day Weekend (September 2 -3). As the national university of the Catholic Church, it is unique among Catholic universities in the United States. Their mission centers on serving the Church through education and research – a service that is greatly needed today. University faculty and scholars seek to cultivate a new generation of Catholic minds, to find new and exciting ways to apply the inexhaustible resources of the Catholic intellectual tradition, and to take the best thinking of Catholic minds, past and present, to help solve the problems of contemporary life and enrich the culture around us. In addition, CUA educates hundreds of priests and religious each year and can proudly call over 12,000 of them alumni. All of the funds received through the annual collection for CUA directly support financial aid for students, including many from this diocese. To learn more, please visit: collection.cua.edu #SupportCatholic U Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano Bishop of Bridgeport

Welcome Back/Ministry Weekend

As a new school year begins, and people arrive home from vacation, this is a wonderful opportunity to visit with friends after Mass, and consider getting involved, or more involved at St. Michael's Church or at St. Timothy Chapel.

The weekend of September 16/17, is the Second Annual Welcome/Ministry weekend at St Michael the Archangel Parish. Please plan to stay after Mass, visit with friends, meet new parishioners and learn about all the opportunities to volunteer your time and talent.

Light refreshments will be served after every Mass that weekend. There will be tables set up in Msgr. Cullen/Cry Room and in front of the church. Volun-teers will be available to answer questions and pro-vide volunteer sign up with the many activities that help to make St Michael's the vibrant Parish it is.

Mark your calendar now, so we can join together as a Parish family!
