Greenville Public Library, in conjunction with the Rhode Island Library Association (RILA) and over 30 libraries across the state, is preparing to launch the national Geek the Library campaign this September!

Geek the Library is a nationwide public awareness and advocacy campaign that affirms the library’s pivotal role in the community. The campaign is designed to boost public library support, raise awareness of valuable 21st century public library services, and address critical funding needs. The campaign’s core message focuses on the reality that everyone has something that they’re passionate about—something they geek.

With an official launch date of September 8, the campaign will run through November. We have plans to geek our space during this time using a dis-play, posters and computer screensavers, among others. We also plan to get out into the community more, including setting up tables at local grocery stores, displaying posters at local businesses, and encouraging the community to get personalized geek gear: http://geekthelibrary.org/getyourgeekon/geekgear.html

To bring further awareness to the Smithfield community, the library will hold a Geek of the Month contest starting September 8. Residents are encouraged to send in short written or photo essays detailing what they geek. The top five nominees will be chosen by library staff based on creativity and overall content, and the community can vote for the best submission. The winner will be announced September 30 and will receive a $100 Amazon gift card. Those who vote will be entered into a drawing for prizes donated by local businesses, including Carriage Lane Furniture, Simply Elegant Flowers and Pixie’s Hair Salon and Spa, among others.

So keep your eyes open for a “geeked” up town and drop in to show your support!
