The Friends of the Greenville Public Library are requesting donations to support our ongoingprograms. Any amount will allow us to continue to offer them at little or no charge.

___$150-$250 provides the cost of a program presenter for any age group

___$75 provides crafts and activities for a month for the Baker AfterSchool Center

___$25 contributes to purchasing summer reading incentives

___$ any amount will be used to provide programming for all age groups

Children’s Department NewsSummer Reading Program ~ 2013

“Dig into Reading” is the theme of the Summer Reading Program at the Library this summer, where children ages 3 1/2_- 10 years of age will explore all things underground. Registration begins June 24 for the program which will take place from June 24-August 9. A complete brochure detailing all of the programs during the summer will be available in June.

The statewide Rhode Island Summer Reading Program is supported by the RI Office of Library and Information Services with funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Pawtucket Red Sox, Citizens Bank and Pepsi. Local support includes the Smithfield YMCA, A & W Root Beer, UNO Chiago Grill, the Friends of the Library, and the Greenville Library.

Please Note: Registration is required for all programs, so call 949-3630 x 2 to register, or do so in person at the Children’s Desk. Please, no drop-ins or voice mail registrations for any of our programs. Thank you.

Dinoman DinosaursDinosaurs at the library? Have no fear, Dinoman is here! With his trusty raccoon Reflex, he takes the audience on a magical ride through the Mesozoic era. For families with children ages 4-10. Register beginning June 10 for this program to be held on Friday, June 28 @ 10:30 am.

Garden Gnome CraftDo you want to make your garden more magical? Come to the Li-brary on Monday, July 1 at 10:30 am. to create garden gnomes. Children ages 6 and up may reg-ister for this program beginning June 24.

Book BuddiesChildren ages 3 1/2-8 may sign up to read with a teen weekly to earn reading credit towards incentives, and for fun, of course! Buddy sessions begin on July 2 and continue on Tuesdays through August 6 at 10:30 am or 6:30 pm. Registration begins on June 24 for one or more of the Tuesday sessions.

Bedtime Storytimes Storytimes for children ages 3 1/2_-5 1/2 years will be held on Wednesday evenings, from 6:30-7:15 pm from Wednesday, July 3 through August 7. Registration is required and begins on Monday, June 24 for the first one. Regis-tration for the following storytimes will be taken the week before each session. Children may wear their pajamas and bring their favorite stuffed animal.

Mad ScienceA Mad Scientist will amaze fam-ilies with children ages 4-10 as they “dig” into the layers of the earth to see its makeup and in-vestigate how scientists evaluate what they find. The presentation really pops when they see what happens when what’s inside the earth tries to get out. Monday, July 8 at 10:30 am. Registration begins June 24.

Ronald’s Dig In, Read and Succeed Show

Ronald McDonald will offer families with children ages 3-10 this 30 minute show which is filled with magic, music, audience participation and Ronald fun! Registration begins June 24. The show takes place Friday, July 12 at 10:30 am.

Children’s BubbleCreations from the monthly Lego club will be displayed in the Bubble this month. These Lego creations were made by children ages 5 1/2 to 11 who participat-ed in the Lego event. Don’t miss seeing these great Lego designs! If you want to join in on the fun, be on the look-out for upcoming Lego events at the library.

Paws to Read!Does your child need practice in reading skills? Here’s an opportunity to practice this summer with Maxwell, a therapy dog who LOVES to listen to stories. Max and Diane, his owner, have listened to children read for the past several years. Children ages 6-10 who would benefit from this experience can sign up for one 20 minute session per week and spend that time reading to a willing, friendly, four-legged partner. Monday evenings from 6:30-7:30 pm from July 8-August 5. Registration begins June 24 for one or more of the sessions.

Kids Reading Across RIFamilies with children in grades 3-6 are invited to come and kick-off the Summer Reading Program at the State House on Saturday, June 1 from 1-4 pm. Author Thanhha Lai will speak and sign a free copy of her book, Inside Out & Back Again, the 2013 Kids RARI book. Crafts and entertainment will also be included. Children ages 3-5 are invited to join Ms. Kasha from Heritage Ballet on Wednesday, June 5 at 10:30 am for a creative move-ment class. Call 949-3630 ext.2 to register.

Art ClassesFeeling creative? Children ages 6-10 may register for one or all in the series of art classes taught by artist and teacher Adele Karbows-ki to be held on Friday mornings from 10:30-11:30 am. Children will use pastel, oil pastel, tempera paint, and collage in an encourag-ing, creative environment. Class-es will be held on July 5, 19 and August 2. Registration for one or all of the classes begins June 24.

Thanks for the Help!Two new bookcases were purchased recently thanks to generous donations to the Children’s Department. We sincerely appreciate your support!

Hooray for the Red, White and Blue!

Get ready for Flag Day with this patriotic craft! Children ages 6-10 are invited to create a flag to show off their American spirit on Wednesday, June 5 at 4 pm. Registration is now being taken.
