Welcome

Dear Parent/Carer

Thank you for everything!

The staff of Greenbrae are very grateful for the support we have had from you, our

parent body, over the past year and we should like to take this opportunity to thank

you most sincerely.

Whenever we have needed help for Outings, School Events, Fundraising, Golden

Groups and numerous other things, we have only had to ask and you have

volunteered your services.

As parents, you have worked hand-in-hand with us for the benefit of the children at

Greenbrae and we look forward to continuing our partnership with you next year.

In the meantime, we send our best wishes to you for a good summer holiday.

Around Greenbrae — reflecting on our year

Primary 1 We all made fruit kebabs. We used different fruits like apples, bananas, strawberries and

kiwi fruit. First we washed our hands and then we cut some of the fruit up into small

chunks. Next we pushed the fruit onto a skewer and after that we ate them up! They tast-

ed juicy and fantastic!

We made cars in groups using construction called K’NEX. Our cars had to carry a small

bear. Some cars had eyes for headlights, others had wings for mirrors and wheels for

seats! Then we used a remote control to drive our cars around the hall. We were not

allowed to bump into any other cars. It was fun and we all got a sticker for working hard.

Nursery This term has been very busy for our pre-school children

as they prepare for flying our nest and moving into P1.

We have had weekly sessions with our P1 buddies;

sharing play in the Nursery or tackling some activities in

P1. The children have also had activity sacks which they

take home to share.

The pm Nursery went out and about to the duck pond

especially to see the ducklings and one proud mum

kindly swam her brood down to greet us (It could have

been something to do with the bread we brought with

us!). The children have also been welcoming the new

entrants to Nursery for a ‘stay and play’ session.

To round off this session, both our AM and PM Nursery

will visit the Alford Valley Railway: a train trip, time to

play in the park and lunch out. What could be better!

Primary 3 In class we have been learning about Newspaper Features and how to write a Newspa-

per Report. We wrote one about Miss Muffet. We also did one about Miss Beattie turning

into a toad!! We have also been learning about how cress grows in different conditions.

We found out that the seeds grew best in cotton wool or soil. They didn’t grow well in

sand or paper towels.

Primary 2 This term we have been doing lots of exciting things. In Writing, we have been creating

our own ‘Superhero’ stories about ourselves with ‘Superhero’ names! Then we typed

these stories on the computer, drew pictures to match, printed them out and made a

‘wee’ book!

We have also been learning about maps with Miss Gray (our student teacher). She

taught us all about different map symbols, how to draw maps of the school on squared

paper and then we went for a walk to check our maps were correct. We even made

maps for Beebots!

Greenbrae School Upper Stages pupils, enjoying a wide range of learning experiences in and out of the school.

Primary 6 P6 have had a very exciting last term. We joined p5 on a trip to Discovery in Dundee, where we learned lots of interesting facts like

what they took on the boat food-wise and how difficult it was to survive in Antarctica. We also went to Sports Village for the

Oldmachar Commonwealth Games. The events were Basketball, Touch Rugby and Athletics. P6 did a great job and were runners

up along will the other African teams. We also had a visit from Rebecca Bee who is a famous rhythmic gymnast. We all wished her

luck as she is travelling to Glasgow to compete in the Commonwealth Games. She showed us lots of moves such as balances,

pivots, leaps and the ribbon which look amazing and so did Amber who trains with her. Lots of people tried the ribbon and some

were very good. Others tried it for fun. The equipment that she uses are clubs, ribbons, balls and hoop. We also want to thank Mrs

Gregor & Miss Murchison for teaching us about cycling safety even although we got soaked one day! Everyone has had such a

great time in P6 and we will all miss Mrs Robertson but we look forward to having a great last year with Mrs Duncan.

Primary 4 A highlight of this term for our class was our K’NEX

workshop, ‘Building Bridges’. We learned about strong

and weak shapes and we were all successful in

working together to build a bridge in a team.

For four weeks at the start of term RGU Sports Lead-

ers came into school and taught us Athletics, Netball,

Badminton and Football. We really enjoyed learning

new skills, especially in javelin and shot putt.

Primary 5

In May, P5 had a Group Challenge to create a fruit salad. They worked on their team work skills, found out about food labelling, worked out the cost of their fruit salad and finally made and tasted their product. Mrs Powell and Miss Royle judged the groups’ fruit salads and the winners were Liat, Amy, Rio, Lachlan and Maria.

Primary 7 Our last term has been exciting and full of fun. Activity Week was 5 days of non-stop adventure. We did everything from quad bik-

ing to snow-boarding to sky-diving! After our action-packed week we continued working on our P7 Leavers' Show, ‘Panto

Pandemonium’. With the excellent support of P4, P5 and P6 choirs, we showed off our performing skills. It was a great success,

thanks , in no small measure, to an awesome audience.

'Greenbrae on Wings' was an excellent Enterprise Project. After lots of planning and organisation we delivered a fantastic Paper

Aeroplane Competition for P1-P6. Every class winner was presented with a certificate at Assembly and the lucky overall winner,

Holly Meres, was the recipient of an i-Pod Nano which was kindly donated by Aberdeen International Airport. We thank everyone

who sponsored the event and helped us raise an amazing £950.30! This money is to be shared amongst P7 Leavers' Party and 2

Charities, namely the Archie Foundation and CHD UK.

reflecting on our year — Around Greenbrae

In June we visited Captain Scott’s ship, Discovery, in Dundee. It was great to see the size of the ship and to see how the men lived on board. It was a lovely end to our Antarctic Explorers topic.

Update from Greenbrae Parent Council It has been a busy year for the Parent Council and we have achieved quite a lot over the course of the 2013/2014 session, including:

Securing an additional supplier for school uniform. The Uniform Company is a local company based in the Bridge of Don and provide parents with an alternative to buying online via John Lewis.

Surveying the parent forum with regards to traffic issues on Greenbrae Crescent during school drop-off and collection times. This feedback has been relayed to the Education, Culture and Sport team at Aberdeen City Council with regards to the rezoning and subsequent expected increase in pupil numbers attending the school. Liaising with Senior Management with regards to various school policies. For example, the use of personal electronic devices during golden groups /end of term and looking at the possibility of reintroducing a residential week away for the Primary 7 pupils in their final term at the school.

Establishing a new Greenbrae School Parent Council Facebook page for communicating with parents/carers. Engaging with Aberdeen City Council during the recent consultation period to rezone the new housing development at Dubford for Greenbrae. This included attending public meetings, meeting with HMI inspectors and requesting councillors from Education, Culture and Sport attend our Parent Council meetings.

Liaising with the education team at Aberdeen City Council with regards to the rezoning decision and planned extension to

the school buildings.

Attending city wide Parent Council seminars and workshops. Can we please remind parents that the minutes of our meetings are available to view on the school website and are a good source of information for current issues concerning the Greenbrae. Please get in touch with any issues you would like us to raise on your behalf, either by speaking to one of our members (a full list is also displayed on the website) or by emailing [email protected]

Update from PTA The PTA have once again been working hard this year raising money for the school. A big thank you to all the members,

teachers and helpers at the various events throughout the year. We are always looking for new recruits, either to join us or

lend a hand at our fundraisers.

This year the fayre raised just over £4500 which is a fantastic achievement. It has become increasingly difficult to get raffle

donations from companies. If you can help or know anyone who can, please let one of the PTA members know.

Spree books will be available after the Summer break at the bargain price of £20. This discounted rate is to mark the Spree

anniversary. A huge thank you to all for your continued support. Our children benefit greatly from the profits that are made.

The PTA would like to wish you a wonderful summer.
