We were all chosen by Mrs Trundle by telling why we would be a good Green Leader so we all deserve this job very much. Our First Edition is to tell all of you about amazing bug houses.

We'd love to see any pictures of your Bug Hotels! Please read the articles by Jamie, Calypso and Ella's amusing article on human 7 star v. Bug hotel!

The Green Leaders as part of the Eco Committee are going to enable the Eco Committee to advertise their work on the school Environment. We have different jobs with the same aim to raise Environmental awareness.

What our jobs are Jamie's job is to keep seeing how well we are doing on saving energy like turning of lights and turning or anything that uses electricity when not needed.

Ella's job is to make sure in our school community we don't litter. Incidentally it would also help if you see a piece of litter to pick it up. Every piece makes a difference.

Calypso's job is to keep the school informed about what's happening over the world to do with Eco. Because if we know what's happening we might get ideas for our school.

Lucy's job is to talk to the school about transport and to try not to use the car when you don't need to and to keep you cycling and walking.

Our very own RSM bug hotel RSM's hotel is in the living nature reserve. The bug hotel is tall and quite wide. It is split into two tiers. The top one is narrower than the bottom one. It's built from wooden pallets stacked on top of each other with bricks supporting each

pallet.Sticks, cardboard, pine cones and leaves fill the gaps between the pallets and around the bricks. One side of it is open to the nature reserve but the back of it is right up against a bramble bush. Hopefully insects living in the bush will enter the bug hotel and make it their home.

Why did we create a school bug hotel?

Tidy gardens, lawns and lack of dead wood reduce places for bugs to live; it is a good idea to build a bug hotel because it will provide nooks and crannies for the bugs. It will also provide shelter from predators.

What you will need:

You will need lots of different materials from your garden to make your bug hotel, for example leaves , straw, bricks , and dead wood. It is good to try to incorporate anything you find in your garden. You can put your hotel anywhere in the garden. You could build it in a bush, in a tree against a wall or in a pile of logs. Sizes can differ. They can be tall land wide or short and narrow or any size you want.

Benefits

One of the benefits of making a bug hotel is that they're cheap to make. If you have an empty 2 litre bottle lying around you cut it in half, put small bamboo sticks in the bottom of it and lay it on its side. The bees can then fly in and lay lay their eggs there. Another benefit is that bug hotels increase bio diversity.

Seven Star Hotel or Bug Hotel?

You couldn't tell the difference between the two? You might notice that the only bugs in your seven star hotel are in the beds but the owners will deny it! You might notice that there's no lift- what a disaster but who needs a lift when you can climb!

There are no power showers it's true however what's better than an early morning dew drop on your neck followed by a fresh downpour from the heavens!

So as you lie in your cosy Hotel all is not bad, there's a lot to be said for getting back in touch with nature!

Would you rather have?

What would you rather like -to sleep on a soft comfy pillow or a bag of sticks? I would say a BAG of STICKS!!! I know I'm crazy but it's much more fun.

Who needs an early morning alarm to wake them when instead you have shafts of sunlight through your window and no energy is used or wasted.

You might think that your luxury seven star accommodation will be sufficient however in your bug hotel how better to pass the time than to invite in a few creepy crawlies in and watch the fun start?

All you need in a bug hotel is a few friends joining you on a wet soggy day ,there is creature comforts in a community!

You might think that getting food out of a cafe is nice but in a bug Hotel you can simply barge into the next apartment- and it wouldn't be fresher than that. Jamie Oliver eat your heart out.

My bug hotel

4Lorum Ipsum Dolor

Why I made it ?

I wanted to increase the amount of birds in my garden.

Earwigs and wood lice like pine cones with leaves in between them. If you want to tempt frogs, toads and maybe Aegean a hedgehog to your bug hotel get a curved roofing tile and fill the space underneath it with leaves.

MY BUG HOTEL by Calypso Burger

A little while ago I decided to make my own bug hotel out of the old trellis my Dad was taking down. So I got my brother to help me carry down the piles of wood to my chosen site. Soon I had a fantastic bug hotel. You can make different styles of hotels which means different bugs are attracted. Solitary bees tend to prefer dry places. If you put a brick sideways and you put bamboo throughout the holes the bees can lay their eggs there. Terracotta pots are great for spiders. Another way to accommodate spiders and ladybirds is by getting logs and making different sized holes in them.
