GREA ARAN 312 Greek Architectural Sculpture Credits: 4 Prerequisites: None Course Description A careful examination of ancient Greek architectural sculpture, with discussions of the rise of monumental architecture, the origins of architectural sculpture, and the iconography and meaning of its subjects. Students are assessed through written and oral assignments, exams, and class participation. Included are visits to the Acropolis, Agora, National Museum, and the sanctuary at Delphi. Learning Outcomes Each student will master a variety of skills during this course, through a various assignment types and classroom approaches. Learning the material of the course’s subject is only the first step. Through a combination of lecture and discussion in the classroom, which be based on required readings, a plurality of perspectives will emerge. Each student will have the opportunity to evaluate readings as well as lecture material, both in oral discussion and in written response papers. Through individual classroom reports on mythological figures and on-site reports of particular monuments, each student takes responsibility for presenting material to the other students. Each type of presentation also requires each student to moderate discussion and to respond to questions from the rest of the class. Emphasis is placed on improving writing skills and practicing to read critically, as well as building confidence during oral presentations.
