Summer is in full swing now. I hope eve-ryone is able to take a little bit of time to relax and rejuvenate. There really is a “spirituality of leisure,” in which we can see something of God’s plan for us - to be different than wild

animals or beasts of burden. God puts “well-ordered leisure” right into our nature with the Sabbath Rest. Part of the whole purpose of “leisure” is to be able to lift our heads up from the “grind” of daily work and toil and give thanks to God. Vacation is a wonderful opportunity for such a rest - to “lift our heads” from the ordinary daily routine and to see things and people we don’t ordinarily see, and to give thanks to God. Enjoy these days of summer. Relish the leisure that a vacation allows. But also remember this: every good gift comes from God, including leisure itself. Of all the things from which we take a break, God and the Holy Mass are not among them . . . ~Fr. Mark

BAPTISMAL PREPARATION CLASS

Monday, July 10th, at the Parish offices This meeting is held at 7:00 pm. Both parents are expected to attend and Godparents are welcome. Pre-registration for this class is expected by calling the Parish Office at 769-2469. Please ar-rive for the meeting 15 to 20 minutes early to complete infor-mation for Baptismal certificate.

SANCTUARY CANDLES? MEMORIAL FUND? The question has been asked, “what are the lectors talking

about when someone is mentioned before Mass, in reference to ‘Sanctuary Candles’ or ‘Memorial Fund’ donations?” Good question! The answer is simple - anyone may make an offering to help the par-ish purchase the sanctuary lamp, which continually burns near the tabernacle, in any of our Churches. Additionally, each parish has Endowment Funds which generate revenue for the parish (in the form of dividends, or “interest”). A “Memorial Fund” donation is a gift you can make in someone’s memory, and we will deposit those gifts to help build the Endowment Fund principal. That is to say, your gift made in this way will “continue giving,” because it will remain in the Endowment Fund earning interest for years to come. Each year we intend to offer Mass for those remembered and honored with Memo-rial Fund gifts. Feel free to call the office or to speak with Father Reilly about these opportunities for remembering friends and loved ones with memorial gifts in the parish.

Pastoral Planning This weekend marks the first full year since our

parishes were placed under the care of one pastor. There have been many changes that are still being eval-uated and “tweaked.” We are grateful for patience and understanding in the process. With our Pastoral Plan in the works, it is clear there is much more to do going forward. Additionally, after beginning our Pastoral Plan-ning process, we were blessed with a third priest on the scene. We cannot be certain how long we will have three priests in our midst, but it seems prudent to antic-ipate two or three years. Although we now have three priests, we did not add any Masses to the existing week-end schedule. Here are some reasons for that decision: (1) we may, from time to time, be asked to send one of our priests to a neighboring parish or deanery to assist in the case of sickness or some other emergency in which a priest is not available there; (2) the number of volunteers available to serve as lectors, altar servers, cantors, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist and sacristans are stretched fairly thin now; (3) Five Masses on a weekend seems more than enough to accommo-date the number of people attending Mass on a weekend (about 1,200). All this being said, we WILL add one regularly scheduled Mass to the week - a “weekday Mass” on Saturday morning (i.e., not the “anticipated Sunday Mass” that is offered on Saturday evening). Beginning in August, a 9:00 am Mass will be offered at Sacred Heart Church and will remain in effect so long as we have three priests available in our parishes.

BINGO PLAYERS We have been informed by New York State that beginning on July 9, 2017 children will no longer be allowed to play bingo: Consistent with other forms of gambling in the state, the mini-mum age to play bingo is 18 years of age. Minors under the age of 18 are still permitted to attend, but are not permitted to play bingo. Per-sons 16 years of age or older may continue to perform ancillary non-gaming activities conducted in conjunction with licensed bingo, such as assisting at any food concession, cleaning, maintenance and site prepa-ration. 2016 Bishop’s Fund Appeal Reaches Goal

With generous contributions from over 9,500

households the 2016 Bishop’s Fund Appeal has

reached its goal of $1,280,000.

Bishop LaValley commented: “I join my prayers of

gratitude with those of the many individuals and fami-

lies of our North Country who have benefited from such

generosity through the many ministries the Bishop’s Fund Appeal

supports. I am particularly appreciative of the strong leadership of our

pastors who support this critical appeal each year.”

At this time, the Bishop’s Fund Appeal has collected $1,361,029.02

in gifts received.

All funds received over this year’s goal will be designated to the

Bishop’s Good Samaritan Fund. The Bishop’s Good Samaritan Fund is

a ministry of the Bishop’s Fund Appeal which provides grants to indi-

viduals and families that are facing unexpected emergencies such as

illnesses in the family, loss of homes to fires and flooding and job

loss. The Bishop’s Good Samaritan Fund also provides assistance to

food pantries so that they may continue to help families in need.

Your support of the Bishop’s Fund Appeal truly allows the Dio-

cese of Ogdensburg to be Mercy In Motion by providing spiritual, edu-

cational and charitable support to all of our brothers and sisters in the

North Country.

Nursing Home Volunteers Needed

This ministry is for those called by compassion to be the presence

of Christ to the most vulnerable. Volunteers are needed to assist with

distributing communion at the nursing homes on Sundays. They are also

needed on Wednesdays at the St. Regis Nursing Home and Fridays at the

Highland Nursing Home to assist with Mass. Through the giving of the

Eucharist, attentive listening, sharing prayer, offering reassurance and

being present, ministers will bring the Body of Christ to those who can-

not join us physically in worship. If you can help out or would like more

information please contact Julia LaShomb at the parish office.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

Where is away? We throw so much away. But where exactly is “away”? When you think about it, there is no “away”. When you throw away the Styrofoam container, the non-recyclable plastic, the aluminum pan, it all goes into the trash can, then into the landfill. Out of sight - but where it remains for generations to come. Suggestion: for summer picnics and events: why not choose reusable plates, cups and silverware that create little or no trash? Or, when not feasible for large groups, consid-er purchasing paper products whenever possible.

SPIRITUAL BOOK CLUB

The Massena Catholic Community Book Club meets once a month to discuss various works of fiction and non-fiction that have importance to the Catholic Church and relevance in our daily lives. Copies of the books are often available on Kindle through our parish's Formed.org subscription or through purchase with Amazon or available on our Kiosk in the back of the church. We meet the Third Thursday of the month, 7:00 pm at the parish offices. Please contact the parish office for more information.

BRINGING UP THE GIFTS AT MASS You are encouraged to bring up the Offertory Gifts in re-membrance of your deceased relative, friend, or loved one when the Mass intention is for one of them. Since Ushers do not always know who in the family will be at the Mass, they would appreciate your letting them know you are present and willing to carry the gifts up.

Bazaar Meeting

There will be a Bazaar meeting held on Monday, July 17th, 6:30 PM, at the St. Mary’s rectory. Anyone interested in helping out this year is encouraged to attend.

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, Virgin, was canonized on 10/21/2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. Kateri was born near the town of Au-riesville, New York, in the year 1656, the daughter of a Mohawk warrior. She was four years old when her mother died of smallpox.

The disease also attacked Kateri and transfigured her face. She was adopted by her two aunts and an uncle. Kateri be-came converted as a teenager. She was baptized at the age of twenty and incurred the great hostility of her tribe. Although she had to suffer greatly for her Faith, she remained firm in it. Kateri went to the new Christian colony of Indians in Canada. Here she lived a life dedicated to prayer, penitential practices, and care for the sick and aged. Every morning, even in bitterest winter, she stood before the chapel door until it opened at four and remained there until after the last Mass. She was devoted to the Eucharist and to Jesus Cruci-fied. She died on April 17, 1680 at the age of twenty-four. She is known as the "Lily of the Mohawks". Devotion to Kateri is responsible for establishing Native American min-istries in Catholic Churches all over the United States and Canada. Kateri was declared venerable by the Catholic Church in 1943 and she was Beatified in 1980. Hundreds of thousands have visited shrines to Kateri erected at both St. Francis Xavier and Caughnawaga and at her birth place at Auriesville, New York. Pilgrimages at these sites continue today. St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American to be declared a Saint. Her feast day is July 14. She is the patron-ess of the environment and ecology as is St. Francis of Assi-si.

Novena to Saint Kateri Tekawitha

Kateri, favored child and Lily of the Mohawks, I come to seek your intercession in my present need:

(State your intention here...) I admire the virtues which adorned your soul:

love of God and neighbor, humility, obedience, patience,

purity and the spirit of sacrifice. Help me to imitate your example in my state of life.

Through the goodness and mercy of God, Who has blessed you with so many graces

which led you to the true faith and to a high degree of holiness, pray to God for me and help me.

Obtain for me a very fervent devotion to the Holy Eucharist so that I may love Holy Mass as you did

and receive Holy Communion as often as I can. Teach me also to be devoted

to my crucified Savior as you were, that I may cheerfully bear my daily crosses

for love of Him Who suffered so much for love of me. Most of all I beg you to pray for me

that I may avoid sin, lead a holy life and save my soul. AMEN

In Thanksgiving to God for the graces bestowed upon Kate-ri (Recite the following prayers...) Our Father… Hail Mary... Glory Be... (3 times) Kateri, Lily of the Mohawks, pray for me.
