Greater Detroit's Original Cultural Events Weekly Thursday, October 20, 2016 DOWNTOWN MONITOR Pumpkins and Tigers and Bears, Oh My! The second Detroit Zoo's Smashing Pumpkins event of the year will happen on Saturday, October 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. throughout the Zoo's many animal habitats. The Zoo's animals will receive pumpkins filled with treats to eat, play with, roll around in, tear apart and most certainly, smash. Every year around Halloween, Zoo staffers give the animals seasonal treats-including pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks and other fall harvest bounty-as part of its comprehensive program of ensuring environments for animals that are ever-changing and appropriately complex. As part of the Zoo's routine attention to their prized animal residents' well-being during the year, food items are hidden throughout the animals' habitats or prepared and placed in a unique manner to stimulate natural behaviors such as foraging or stalking. "Around Halloween, seasonal fare from local Michigan producers gives this activity a special appeal for both Zoo visitors and the animals," said Scott Carter, the Zoo's Chief Life Sciences Officer. The schedule for the animals and their treats follows: 10:30 a.m., Otters (treat-filled pumpkins) 11:00 a.m., Great Apes (pumpkins) 11:30 a.m., Polar Bears (treat-filled pumpkins) 12:00 p.m., Bison (pumpkins and cornstalks) 12:30 p.m., Grizzly Bears (Halloween pinatas and cornstalks) 1:00 p.m., Giraffes (treat-filled pumpkins and cornstalks) 1:30 p.m., Vultures (treat-filled pumpkins and cornstalks) 2:00 p.m., Lemurs (Halloween pinatas and pumpkins) 2:30 p.m., Anteaters (treat-filled pumpkins) Smashing Pumpkins Two at The Detroit Zoo is free with zoo admission. ‘Detroit: America’s Live Music Engine’ at Historical Museum

Opening on Saturday, October 22 and running through January 8, 2017, in the Community Gallery at the Detroit Historical Museum, Detroit: America’s Live Music Engine showcases the Motor City’s music scene in three major components: the places, the people and the future. Detroit: America’s Live Music Engine begins by exploring the venues, both large and

small, that have consistently made Detroit one of the world’s top ranked live concert destinations for musicians and their fans. The exhibit goes on to highlight the stories of Detroit’s sidemen musicians who serve

as the backbone for many of Detroit’s – and the world’s – biggest acts. Finally, the exhibit discusses the future of Detroit’s musical legacy by celebrating

the youth of today, connecting them to the past and preparing them for their musical future. There will also be opportunities for exhibit attendees to share their own experiences and photos from when they were part of an audience at local venues. The Detroit Historical Museum is hosting a free family-friendly opening event on

Thursday, October 20 from 7-10 p.m., featuring a live music jam session with The Detroit Retro Society.

The Museum is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for all, all the time. Parking in the Museum’s lot is $7 at all times. For more information, call the Museum at (313) 833-1805 or see detroithistorical.org. The Detroit Historical Museum is located at 5401 Woodward Ave. (NW corner of Kirby) in Midtown Detroit’s Cultural District.

The Michigan Opera Theatre has produced the opera Carmen – among the most popular and adored by audiences and professional alike - quite a number of times. However, each time that I have seen it, I was once again astonished, but in new and different ways. Carmen is the opening opera of this year at the Detroit Opera House. Ginger Costa Jackson as Carmen was totally tantalizing in the current production that I saw, utilizing the entire body in a most attractive as well as seductive manner. The dancing segments in this opera are enticing as well. I will not elaborate on the plot of this well-known opera, which can be easily found online by those who need it.

Marcelo Puente as Don Jose is convincing as the appropriate partner for Lopez. One can feel the bubbling emotionality between them as it rises and ebbs. How appropriately Carmen describes herself as being into the games of love, rather than long-term commitments. She is addicted to the joy of the enticement of all men, choosing her favorites one at a time.

Cecilia Violetta Lopez made a great Micaela. Luis Alejandro Orozco was enticing especially in his costume of matador Escamillo.

Stage director Ron Daniels brought a great deal more focus and vitality into all of the scenes. In particular, I was impressed with Acts one, two and three, with their lighting and actions. How could one not be impressed with Carmen and her friends Frasquita (Angela Theis) and Mercedes (Briana Elyse Hunter). Together, these three do create a well-functioning unit.

The adult and children choirs were excellent as well, showing distinct

synchronization in their movements and excellent tonal qualities (Suzanne Mallare Acton Choral Master). Conductor Valerio Galli held the entirety together, bringing out the most in the music. I enjoyed watching him on the closed circuit TV.

Opening night was Saturday, October 16 and it is continuing through October 23. The last performance will be with Sandra Piques Eddy as Carmen and Alok Kumar as Don Jose. For tickets and further information, check www.MichiganOpera.org or call (313) 237-7464.

Another notable event last week was that of incredible Russian pianist Denis Matsuev at the Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor on this past Sunday afternoon. I tend to listen to Matsuev at times on Youtube, but the experience of hearing a live performance of his is nothing short of astonishing. The program included Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 31, Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes, the Mephisto Waltz No. 1 (Liszt), Tchaikovsky’s Meditation, and Prokofiev’s 7th Sonata. If this is not enough, Matsuev also provided four encores after the performance. The audience roared with applause of a rare duration and intensity. I am looking forward to the next major

event of UMS – the Berlin Philharmonic on November 12 and 13, with Simon Rattle conducting.

This coming week conductor Neeme Jarvi is in town. On Thursday evening (7:30 p.m.), Friday morning (10:45 a.m.), and Saturday evening (8 p.m.) he will be conducting the DSO in a program that emphasizes two works, Rachmaninoff’s Russian Song, and his Symphony No. 1. In addition to this, Tales of Hemmingway by Michigan Composer Michael Daugherty will be performed with Zuill Bailey, cello soloist. I have listened to parts of this work on Youtube and it appears to have substantial substance.

The Jewish Ensemble Theatre begins its first show for this season, Rights of Passage by Kitty Dubin, this Thursday and will continue through November 13. For further information, check www.JetTheatre.org.

Next week on Friday, October 28, 7:30 p.m., at Kirk in the Hills, Rackham Symphony Choir will be presenting music of the British Isles, including British Folk Songs, the Serenade to Music by Vaughan Williams as well as a selection of well-known pieces and solos from the Operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan. Tickets are available on Rackham’s website at rackhamchoir.org.

Foot Health Today

DR. JAMES SCHELBERG

RISK OF SELF-TREATMENT QUESTION: I have a small corn on my littlest toe. I would like to get rid of it but don’t know which of the many over-the-counter products to try. Which would you recommend?

ANSWER: You want to get rid of a small problem, you take the risk of turning it into something worse. Self-treatment increases the chances of this happening. Commercial products may contain aggravating ingredients. Caustic chemicals dissolve thickened skin but also normal skin. Besides the corn or blemish will only grow back unless

steps are taken to correct this.

Treatment should be rendered by a podiatrist who will first evaluate your circulatory and general health before taking any measures. He will also advise on ways to avoid recurrence of the problem.

2016-2017 THEATRE PREVIEW

19. Set in a Philadelphia hotel during the 1960 Democratic national convention, two front runners are vying for their party's nomination. Mudslinging, backstabbing and subterfuge all take centerstage in this thrilling race to the Oval Office. Judge for yourself how much or how little has changed.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is next, Dec. 8 - 11. Roald Dahl's much-loved story follows the vain attempts of three farmers, Boggis, Bunce and Bean, to get rid of the fox who regularly steals food from

Stagecrafters 2016-'17 season continues with Trevor, through October 23. Trevor is a retired trained chimpanzee with a star-studded past. Dressed in overalls and surrounded by toys, he seems almost human. Loving owner Sandra thinks she understands him, but tension mounts as the audience, privy to Trevor's thoughts and motives, learns otherwise. A painfully funny satire of how fully we can ever know ourselves or others.

The Best Man follows Nov. 4 -

their farms. Mr. Fox will do anything to keep his family fed and safe. This fable shows the importance of tolerance, perseverance and community.

In the Heights runs Jan. 20 - Feb. 12, 2017. New York City's Washington Heights is a vibrant neighborhood on the brink of change where dreams are big, ambition is strong and money is hard to come by. A winning lottery ticket could potentially change the livelihood of the community forever. This exhilarating bi-lingual sensation pulsates with Latin rhythms and hip-hop, plus electrifies with exuberant street-dance.

Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill takes the stage Feb. 24 - March 12, 2017. Spend an evening with legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday, onstage in a Philadelphia nightclub in 1959, for one of her last performances. Billie's

indomitable spirit and sass shine through her torrid stories of addiction, abuse and racism. An intimate musical theatre experience that captures the essence of 'Lady Day' and her music.

The Red Velvet Cake War will be presented March 24 - April 9, 2017. It's the hottest day of July and smack-dab in the middle of Texas tornado season as the formidable women of the Verdeen clan meet up for a family reunion. Things get really crazy when a high stakes wager is made on who bakes the best red velvet cake. Full of slapstick and brilliant one-liners, this zany southern-fried comedy is a "white trash jamboree." A special Ladies Night Out performance on March 23.

Seascape by Edward Albee is on stage April 21 - 30, 2017. Charlie and Nancy are at a crossroads. Having

raised a family and now facing retirement, they each want different things in life. During a holiday at the ocean, issues come to a head, further complicated by the appearance of another couple, two giant lizards who are also at odds with each other. An exploration of relationships in transition.

Jesus Christ Superstar finishes off the season May 19 - June 11, 2017. Reimagined with a contemporary slant, Stagecrafters' sets this classic rock musical in present day. A band of road-worn actors invade an abandoned theatre — their intent: to relive the last seven days of Jesus' life.

Tickets range from $8-$25, depending on the show. For tickets and more information call (248) 541-6430 or see stagecrafters.org.

8DOWNTOWN MONITOR October 20, 2016

CINEMA CULTURE

By Paul ArlonI’ve read quite a few of the twenty Jack Reacher

books from author Lee Child. I was impressed enough by Child’s creation to have added several signed first editions to my library. The novels are good reads, every one of them. Jack Reacher is a terrific addition to the universe of action-adventure characters, and Child’s written work is undeniably compelling. So much so that filmdom’s arguably ‘biggest’ action hero, Tom Cruise, has snapped up the rights to star as Reacher, in what will surely be a respectably long-running franchise of Child’s many books, the latest of which, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is being released this weekend.

Now, here’s the reason I put ‘biggest’ in quotation marks as I described Cruise in his starring role as Jack Reacher. If anyone has ever cracked open one of Child’s novels and read even just the blurb on the dust jacket, the first page, and probably even just the first paragraph, here’s what they’ll find out about the literary Jack Reacher: He’s 6’5” and weighs 250 pounds. I’ve read a number of guess-timates about Tom Cruise and his height and weight, and the most generous of these put him at somewhere between 5’4” and 5’7” tall and a whopping 140-160 pounds in weight. So, as a true fan of the books, I seriously had to upend my mental image of one of my favorite characters.

But, no matter what, the movies are based on Lee Child’s books. And even if Cruise is a foot shorter and a hundred pounds lighter, Child’s golden stories pretty much make up for the obvious physical miscasting of Cruise in the title role. So, okay, that’s my take on the dinky Tom Cruise playing the Goliath named Jack Reacher. And all of these ridiculous comparisons aside, this is still a mighty worthwhile couple of hours on the big screen.

Here’s the story: Reacher is a decorated ex-Major and commander of a special military police unit — an elite unit that he created. He's left the military, and now, with nothing tying him down, no roots, and no responsibilities to anyone or anything, he drifts nomadically across the country, carrying only a folding toothbrush, and paying cash for whatever he does – which is mostly sitting in small-town diners, eating eggs and drinking copious amounts of coffee, until he invariably gets pulled into one death-defying adventure after another. For a man who exhibits perfect manners and who extends kindness and courtesy to all those that cross his path, he's also prone to quickly mete out violent judgment towards those that break his code of justice.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is basically the tale of a date that goes incredibly wrong. After flirting on the phone, Reacher makes plans to visit Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders), the woman who has assumed his old command of the special military police unit in Washington, D.C.

His intention is to take her out to dinner. When he arrives at his old office to see Maj.

Turner and make good on their dinner plans, a Colonel (Holt McCallany) sitting at Maj. Turner’s desk, tells him that she's been arrested for espionage, and is implicated in the murders of two of her investigators. Not only that, but she's given express directions for Reacher to have no contact with her whatsoever.

Of course, this makes Reacher, formerly the military’s toughest investigator, curious. He meets Maj. Turner’s attorney and finds out why she's cut off all contact with him – because, apparently Reacher has been sued for child support for a daughter that he knew nothing about, and since he has no permanent address, he didn’t know about the paternity suit, either. This also makes him curious.

Upon leaving his meeting with the attorney, he’s followed…but, he’s too smart for that, and he makes quick work of the tail, finding out that the thugs work for a para-military corporation of professional mercenaries. Curious, again.

Reacher tracks down his so-deemed long-lost daughter, Sam (Danika Yarosh). She’s a street-smart teenager, fully on her own, with her ex-hooker mother in and out of rehab, etc. Reacher suspects that she isn’t his offspring. Doesn’t matter. She's now traveling in his dangerous orbit.

The next day, Captain Espin (Aldis Hodge), of the military police, picks up Reacher and takes him

back to their office for questioning – seems that Maj. Turner’s attorney was beaten to death the night before and Reacher is under suspicion. In fact, he’s charged with the man’s murder. And he is taken to the same prison that holds Maj. Turner. Convenient – because, he is really curious, now.

Reacher begins to piece things together and is certain that Maj. Turner is next on the death list. Since he's already in the same prison where she’s being held, he breaks her out. And, now, Reacher’s new daughter Sam, is also in danger. There's a dogged assassin on their trail, who is working to take out everyone connected to Maj. Turner and now, Reacher, too.

So, the game is afoot. The Major, Reacher, and Sam have to solve a bunch of murders, and unwind the mystery behind all of the military, mercenaries, and money that is threatening their lives.

Everything considered, this is a very well done movie, plenty of decent action, great gunplay and martial arts, strong, able, attractive women, nasty villains, heroic good guys, car chases, and even a few scenes in New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

Directed by Edward Zwick, written by Richard Wenk, Zwick, and Marshall Herskovitz from the Lee Child book of the same name, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is a worthy effort for Tom Cruise and his Skydance production team.

I’m tempted to give this movie 5.4 out of 6.5, but that’s trying too hard to be funny…so, instead, I'll give it a solid Three Stars.
