1 Edition 9 | November 2018

…FOREWORD FROM THE STATE TEAM…

I write this immediately after Sydney Jamboree 2018 has finished, and wow what an event. I could fill this whole edition of The Waratah with wonderful stories and thanking all for Jamboree.

For everyone that attended, this event will be a highlight of their Guiding journey and will be held up as a shining example of what a group of Volunteers are able to achieve.

I will leave you to recall your own memories from both this and past Jamborees, as well as peruse the article and photos later in this edition. This International Event hosted by Girl Guides NSW & ACT for Girl Guides Australia showcased us at our best. Girls having fun and putting their best foot forward, facilitated by wonderful Group and Sub Camp Leaders, all organised by a dedicated group of Volunteers who worked for over 2 years to ensure the smooth running of this event.

On behalf of everyone who attended either in person or in spirit, heartfelt thanks and congratulations go to Event Leaders in Charge (LICs) Program, Kylie Gray; Site and Services, Jo Tonon; Event Convenor Helen Eggleton, and their team of Managers.

I would also like to thank their families and Guiding Districts who were so very generous in loaning these wonderful women to us as well as assisting them and providing untold moral support. Of course such an event does not just happen by a few people getting together to organise it. THANKS to each and every person who in some way assisted Jamboree, either by volunteering at the Jamboree itself or in some way made it possible for the event to happen. Organising gear, fundraising, applications, pre-Jamboree camps, buses and all sorts of other bits are all part and parcel of our daily Guiding activity but do not go unnoticed. BRAVOOO to all.

I welcome Alice Anderson to the role of State Program Manager. Alice has a wide experience in Guiding and is keen to look at ways to improve the experience of participating in the Australian Guide Program for both Leaders and Girls. You may be have read about Alice in her online bio as a Board Director. Watch out for more information about Alice and her vision for the AGP in future newsletters and the program section of our website.

In December, Region Managers Carol Peterson from Coastal Valleys and Robin Laverty from Twin Rivers complete their terms. I have served as a Region Manager with both of these ladies as well as working with them in my team as State Commissioner. Both of these ladies have worked tirelessly, with good humour and what is best for Guiding at the forefront of everything they have considered not only in their own area but as a whole. I wish them well in their continuing Guiding lives. We will miss them as part of the Region Manager Team.

Calls for nominations for incoming Region Managers have been sent to adult members in both of these Regions. If you live in either of these Regions take a closer look at the nomination information. Are you one of our next Region Managers?

December will also see Elizabeth Baker complete her 3 year term as our State’s Learning and Development Manager. Elizabeth has led a team of Trainers who are committed to ensuring our Leaders and Managers have all the tools needed to ensure our Units and Districts are able to deliver the AGP. Elizabeth has been progressive in her leadership and worked hard to implement new ideas.

You will remember that earlier in the year a survey was completed by our Members. This survey is proving invaluable in providing useful insights for our Member Management Committee to enable them to make informed decisions in the best interests of our Membership and Guiding as a whole. You will have noted that our State publication, The Waratah, is now produced every second month. From 2019 The Waratah will be produced quarterly. This will allow our Marketing and Communications Team the ability to produce a magazine that more truly reflects Guiding. Watch out for more information on what is happening around the State, our successes, the achievements of our Members as well as information on things that affect Guiding.

CEO What fantastic events we have had in recent months. It was

inspiring to see the enthusiasm and energy at both the Great Guide Sleepover (see page 13) and Sydney Jamboree 2018 (see pages 5–6). Attending and being involved in these events is a wonderful way of seeing at firsthand how Guiding positively impacts our members’ lives—even when it is pouring with rain!

The 2018 State Forum is coming up soon on Thursday November 8 at 7.00pm. This year it will be an online State Forum which allows members to discuss the future direction of Guides with the Board, and a great opportunity to influence change. If you would like to virtually attend, make sure you check the news section on the home page of our website for login details.

For Girl Guides NSW & ACT, this time of year is budget time as our financial year draws to a close. For 2019 it has been agreed by the Board that annual membership fees will increase as follows:

Youth members $150

Adult members $110

Trefoil Guild $50

For youth members in NSW, don’t forget you can apply for an Active Kids rebate for $100 also.

As this is the last Waratah for 2018, I would like to thank the office staff for their hard work and commitment to Guiding this year and to reflect on the significant achievements we have had so far this year as an organisation, these include:

• Delivery of National Sydney Jamboree 2018 by NSW & ACT

• Development and implementation of our database upgrade and responsive website including online renewals and improved navigation

• Completion of our first member engagement research, targeting both adult and youth members past and present, to inform our membership strategy

• Completion of property WHS and compliance project and development of property strategy working towards providing more State support to Regions

• Investment review including new investment policy and change of provider

• Operational improvements including online board director elections, new online retail store, and multiple online forms to improve the member experience

• Development of professional skills volunteer development, with mental health first aid to be rolled out in the next months

And in 2019 there is many projects planned to further improve your member experience so watch this space.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the huge commitment to this office and to Guiding by Cynthia Murphy who retired from the Membership Department at the end of October. Her encyclopaedic knowledge of Guiding and tireless work ethic will be missed.

3 Edition 9 | November 2018

Just when you thought the list of jobs that makes you a Guide Leader couldn’t get any longer…It has! But don’t despair, this article is written with the intent of making your job easier. Adopting some simple thinking about public relations matters can make public relations a function of everything you do and shine some light on why public relations matters.

What do you think of when you hear or read the term Public Relations (PR)? Sure there is trying to get stories in newspapers, magazines and blogs, on radio, television and online broadcasts. There is also the building of positive relationships and maintaining different levels of awareness with different groups in your communities that have different levels of knowledge about Girl Guides as an organisation.

Why does it matter that different people have a different awareness of Girl Guides? By recognising that there are different levels of awareness in your community, you can communicate with different groups in a way that may increase their awareness.

What does that have to do with you and with PR? In the communication industry a group of people that share an issue they’ve encountered; are not sure or convinced how to resolve the issue; and who discuss or consider the issue is called a public. Publics organise around issues.

PR can be defined as the management of mutually influential relationships within a web of relationships comprised of stakeholders and organizations.

Media relations, public affairs, publicity and promotion, sales and marketing, reputation management and events management are all aspects of PR. You can probably identify that these are all aspects of your role as a Guide Leader too.

A recent member engagement survey by Girl Guides NSW & ACT indicated that recruitment is highly driven by word of mouth. Your position and prominence in your community makes you one of the most important PR practitioners that our organisation has.

String all of this together and you can empower more girls and young women by communicating effectively to manage the differing wants and needs of multiple publics in your community.

I mentioned a couple of paragraphs ago that publics organise around issues. We can group these publics into five categories. The way you relate with each category may elevate them into the next category. Skipping straight to the punchline: this could increase the number of members in your Guide Unit.

How do we get to the punchline? First, we cluster the stakeholders we now know as publics into groups rated by a combination of knowledge and involvement.

Publics with no involvement and no knowledge of Girl Guides we call a nonpublic. If they have a low level of involvement and a low level of knowledge, we label them inactive. The next group we call aroused—they have a low level of knowledge and a high level of involvement. Aware publics have a high level of knowledge and a low involvement and active publics have a high level of both knowledge and involvement categories.

The active publics are the Girl Guides in your Unit and the parents and volunteers that make up your District. Nonpublics may not know about Girl Guides but that doesn’t mean you can’t change that with a little education.

Doing PR activities in your community can cause publics to gain higher levels of knowledge and involvement. If you add brand recognition to some of your everyday activities you’re already making efforts to educate and persuade your stakeholders to progress through these groupings.

For example, when Girl Guides are performing service and they’re in uniform and obvious representatives of the organisation, the people that engage with them are already increasing their levels of knowledge or involvement. If you also have information with you that can create a conversation and continue to increase knowledge or involvement, then your furthering awareness through increased knowledge and involvement. Something as simple as talking directly to children at a school assembly or having an info stall at a school fair could even have publics jump a couple of knowledge or involvement levels, a nonpublic for instance could become aroused or aware.

What happens when you increase knowledge and involvement? Nonpublics can become inactive, inactive can become aroused, aroused become aware and aware, active. Increased active publics means more members, or more volunteers.

Nonpublics will obviously take more effort and energy of time to become active publics, then converting an aware public to an active. Nonpublics may not ever become an active public, whereas a little release of information at the right time may promote an aware public to an active public and gain you a new member or more volunteer help.

Understanding the multiple publics that make up your community and with PR thinking applied to everyday actions, being a PR practitioner is just a part of being an adult member of Girl Guides.

You may even view yourself as an advocating public—that is to say you are one of the most significant agents of PR that Girl Guides NSW & ACT has.

4 Edition 9 | November 2018

This edition marks 12 months in the role of Membership Manager for me, and hasn’t that year gone quickly!

The last 3 months have been filled with lots of great activities (Great Guide Sleepover and Jamboree) as well as continuing to develop more functionality and information on the website and database for our Members. I continue to learn more about our Programs and Learning and Development approach as well as the Olave Program and Trefoil Guild connection to Girl Guides NSW & ACT. The more Members I meet the more I start to understand the deep connection to Guiding that was expressed so clearly by our Members in the Member Survey results. Hopefully the ongoing work being done by the Membership Team demonstrates our willingness to work with all Members to make Guiding as easy and rewarding as possible.

One of the first tasks the Membership Team had at the beginning of the year was to introduce the Active Kids Voucher Rebate program to Girl Guide Youth Members residing in New South Wales. This program saw Members able to claim a $100 voucher towards their annual Membership Fee. This has been very popular amongst our members and as of the middle of October 2555 (over 50%) Youth Members have claimed the Active

Kids Voucher. This program has another 3 years to run and 2019 vouchers can be claimed from January 1 so don’t forget to claim yours. With the new online renewal system this will be even easier with processing of the Voucher automatic.

The results of the Member Insight Survey continue to provide lots of food for thought and revisiting these regularly keeps me thinking about the ways we can improve membership experience. From the comments in the survey it is clear that our Leaders are looking for the administrative burden to be reduced so that they can concentrate more energy on the experience the Girls are having. With this in mind the Membership Team will be looking to work with Regions, Districts and Units to find ways we can do this. One recent example was the change of a few of the forms required to manage Unit or Member information are now available as an online form, removing the need for these to be printed, signed, scanned and returned. A simple step that can reduce the time something takes to be done. If you have any ideas, please let us know.

As we move towards the end of the year I hope that all enjoy the last few weeks of Guiding 2018 and enjoy a break over the Summer.

Thanks to Taronga, Girl Guides NSW & ACT are once again offering our Guides some very extraordinary opportunities.

For the 13 to 19 age bracket, we will have the opportunity to send four intrepid Guides to Taronga’s Youth at the Zoo (YATZ) program. Normally $350, Taronga has generously supported Girl Guides with some scholarships!

For the first time Taronga have also offered us a position on the YATZ program at Taronga’s Western Plains Zoo.

For the 8 to 11 age bracket, there will again be places up for grabs in a special Girl

Guides takeover of the Keeper for a Day program in January.

These are scholarships with Taronga and the ages are defined by the Taronga programs.

Submissions for the both these programs are due 14 Nov 18.

WHAT IS WORLD THINKING DAY?

In 1926, Girl Guide and Girl Scout delegates from around the globe met in the USA for the 4th World Conference. Among other decisions, they agreed that there should be a special annual day when Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world think of each other and express their thanks and appreciation for our international Movement. This was called Thinking Day. The delegates chose 22 February as the date for Thinking Day because it was the birthday of both Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout Movement, and Olave Baden-Powell, who was World Chief Guide.

Six years later in 1932, the 7th World Conference was taking place in Bucze, Poland, when a Belgian delegate pointed out that a birthday usually involves gifts, and so girls could show their appreciation on Thinking Day by offering gifts to our international Movement by fundraising or making a donation.

Olave Baden-Powell wrote a letter to all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts later that year to tell them about this idea and to ask them to spare a penny to help support Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting around the world.

Much later in 1999, at the 30th World Conference in Dublin, Ireland, delegates from around the world decided to change the name of the day from Thinking Day to World Thinking Day, to better emphasise the international aspects of the day.

The fundraising aspect of World Thinking Day that began in 1932 is still an important funding mechanism for WAGGGS today, and it helps to keep the Movement going.

World Thinking Day 2019 is a time-travel adventure.

Every year, World Thinking Day has a different theme that Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world can learn about and take action on. In 2019, make your way through the history of World Thinking Day and the Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting Movement in an interactive game.

World Thinking Day 2019 is dedicated to the group of girls who took the lead in 1909 and demanded Lord Baden-Powell create something for the girls.

The first week of October at Sydney Olympic Park Was Jamb Hot!

…Jamboree hot that was. Sydney Jamboree 2018 was home to around 1500 Girl Guides, Girl Scouts and Volunteers from around the world from 30 September to 6 October, 2018.

Sydney Jamboree 2018 provided participants opportunities for fun, friendship, adventure and exploration, creating memories to last a lifetime.

Girls undertook some fantastic activities during camp, including climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, surfing, canoeing, a city expedition, canyoning and caving, archery and much, much more.

Not even the torrential downpours late in the week were enough to put a dampner on the event—in fact, for some of the younger girls from the Northern Territory, we’ve been told it was their first experience of real-life rain!

Participants travelled to Jamboree from Canada, New Zealand, UK, Japan, Philippines, USA and Singapore and Malaysia and we got to talk to so many girls from around the world. Sure Guiding may be a little different around the world but we really noticed how much Girl Guides and Girl Scouts have in common, no matter where in the world they come from.

Keep your eye on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube as we post more and more photographs and videos, and search the hashtags #SydneyJamboree2018 and #GirlGuidesGoPlaces to posts from Guides and Girl Scouts everywhere!

Summer is fast approaching, meaning it is prudent to re visit the Bush fire plans and preparations for all of our Guiding locations, particularly those locations known to be in a Bush Fire Zone, or neighbouring bush, grasslands, woodlands, farmland or crops.

Basic Questions to ask when checking your level of Bush fire risk.

• Are the facilities neighbouring or within a couple of streets of bushland?

• Does the local area have a history of bush fires?

• Are there many trees and shrubs around your Hall?

• In the event of a fire, would you need to travel through bush land to leave your venue?

• Is it more than 12 months since you have reviewed your Bush Fire Plans and procedures?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, bush fire preparations are required.

Preparations Include:

• Cutting back any overhanging trees or shrubs and dispose of the cuttings appropriately.

• Clean leaves from the roof, gutters and down pipes.

• Remove and store any flammable items away from the venue.

• Keep any garden mulch and leaf litter away from the premises and keep any grass cut short.

• Store wood piles well away from the venue and keep this covered.

Make sure the pressure relief valves on LPG cylinders face outwards (so flame is not directed towards the premises).

Most buildings, burnt in bushfire attack are because of ember attack. Embers can cause fires many kilometres in front of the main fire and can start falling hours before the fire arrives in the immediate area.

Embers can travel many kilometres ahead of a fire, so even when you are not directly threatened by bush fire , you may be impacted by embers. Preparing your venue can reduce the risk of embers starting a spot fire.

A well prepared location is more likely to survive a bush fire, it also makes it easier for firefighters to defend the property.

Soon to be released is a Girl Guides NSW & ACT Generic Bush Fire Plan document to be used by any location identified as being in a bush fire hazard zone that does not already have a bush fire plan in place. To work out if your home or a Guide Hall is in a Bush Fire Zone go to rfs.nsw.gov.au /plan-and-prepare/building-in-a-bush-fire-area/planning-for-bush-fire-protection/bush-fire-prone-land/check-bfpl

Interesting fact: Tingira is the only boatshed with a roof top deck in the Canada Bay Council precinct.

The temporary closure of the roof top deck, at Tingira, recently was necessary due to safety concerns associated with deterioration of the timber decking. Given the age of the deck, the best way forward is to replace it.

The uniqueness of the property means, what we are proposing to do will generate a lot of interest and not just from the guiding community. The net result is a process that is considerably more complicated than it sounds, only in part because the structure is built over water and attached to land with a special purpose being Girl Guides.

Rest assured, the Property Team will be methodically navigating this process with a view to celebrating 50 years at Tingira in 2019 on a lovely new roof top deck.

Two key areas in Girl Guides is the development of self—learning new skills and taking on challenges—and service to the community in which they live. The girls of Mount Colah Aurora Guides, a Senior Guide Unit, have taken on a novel project which meets those areas of Guiding. They have built and set up a street library near the Guide Hall at Pierre Close, Mount Colah.

Building the street library was a service project which took two terms to finish. In the process the girls learnt new skills including planning, designing, and using power tools. The girls learnt about different libraries and were instrumental in the decoration of the library, choosing a design that reflected the area in which they live. The Guides will monitor and maintain the library as an ongoing responsibility.

Street libraries are a beautiful home for books, planted in your front yard. They are accessible from the street, and are an invitation to share the joys of reading with your neighbours.

— streetlibrary.org.au

They work on an honour system where people choose books to borrow and return, or add another book for others to read. There is no checking in or out but it is a good way for books to get read over and over and not sit on a shelf gathering dust.

The Guides and their Leaders thank the Friends of Mount Colah for their support as well as Paul Hiscock from Just Call Paul for his advice and skill during the project.

MANAGER & CONSULTANT NEWS

What are your goals for 2019? Where in the world would you like international and world Guiding to take you? Find the latest events online at girlguides.org.au/event_category/international-events/ and watch G-news for events. Many events have short response times. Consider checking the site each week as well as joining Facebook sites such as Kusifiri. Events may have closing dates only weeks after being posted. Events, such as Kusifiri may fill within hours of being posted. Plan now for the experience of a lifetime.

When considering an application for an international event, if you are a youth member, take time to talk with your Leaders about your skills, strengths and needs and discuss how you can work towards being ready for an international camp. Do you need to work on some tent skills? Do you need some more nights under canvas? Do you know about WAGGGs? What would you like to share with others at an international event? What would you wear at an international night when Girl Guides or Guides Scouts are wearing their national dress? Could you use some of this new learning towards a peak achievement challenge or badge challenge?

Also consider your referees. You will need two Girl Guiding referees and one personal referee. It is important that you have talked with your Leaders and personal referee and asked for their support. Please do not nominate a referee without their permission. They need to know you are applying for an international event and believe you are ready so they can support you in the selection process and also help you to be ready for the adventure, challenge and opportunity available through international events.

If you have finished year 12, are on a study break or wanting a new challenge consider volunteering at one of the World Centres.

The world awaits you! I await your application and look forward to interviewing you for the opportunity of a lifetime.

Wow, it is hard to believe that Sydney Jamboree 2018 has been and gone. A huge congratulations to all Olaves who took up the challenge to be part of this awesome event. To those who were part of the Planning team, group or subcamp teams, adventures or expedition organisers or even if it was your first Jamboree, the effort and dedication to support this event has paid off. Taking part in organising an event on this scale springboards your Guiding Journey and I hope you continue to connect with the new friends created through the week of Jamboree, you just never know where these contacts may take you.

Congratulations to all volunteers who dedicated many thousands of hours to prepare and deliver this amazing camp.

Have you been working on the Olaves Take Action badge? As the end of year is just around the corner, the time is running out to challenge yourself and your peer group to complete this badge.

Have you witnessed amazing things from an Olave? Why not nominate them for a Good Service Award? The Adult Award framework can be found in Guide Lines (guidelinesforgirlguides.org.au). If you are not aware of these

Good Service Awards, please take the time to have a look at what Adult Awards are available and who you might think is deserving of any of the awards. Remember the following:

• Good Service Awards are to recognise adult members who you believe are worthy of an award by the contribution they have made to Guiding in Australia at Local, State, National or International level.

• Awards can be nominated by anyone at anytime.

• Download the form from Guide Lines

• You need someone to second the nomination and have your Region Leader sign the nomination.

Don’t forget, the Olave Program committee is always after stories about what Olaves have been doing! Please share your journeys, stories, adventures and challenges through social media using #olaves, #liveforthechallenge

GREAT GUIDE SLEEPOVER 2018: sequins, smiles & sea-turtles— 25 August 2018

The Great Guide Sleepover is Girl Guides NSW & ACT's premier fundraising event. Funds raised help support Taronga Conservation Society and Girl Guides NSW & ACT. With over 850 attendees we raised nearly $40,000 for both organisations. Our animal focus this year was the Green (Sea) Turtle and Sally the Sea Turtle Mascot says thank you again for all the hard work and support for this event!

This year we teamed up with TOMRA and Take 3 for the Sea to highlight the importance of environmental awareness, recycling, and protecting our oceans from litter. A big thank you from TOMRA and Take 3 for the Sea for all the Guides who provided questions and suggestions on the day for the environment. They were overwhelmed with the positive response and how many Guides were already doing their bit for the environment, picking up litter and recycling via the Return and Earn scheme.

Congratulations especially to the Richmond Guide Unit who did all their fundraising through the Return and Earn scheme. If your Unit would like to find out more about how to fundraise please email TOMRA ([email protected]) or fill in an application form at tcnsw.com.au to be a local donation partner on your reverse vending machine.

TOMRA and Take 3 from the Sea showed short films on the night, and Taronga's own Kate recorded a message for Girl Guides about Taronga's Litter Free Ocean campaign. You can watch all of these videos on the news page of our website, girlguides-nswact.org.au.

Dr. Ricky Spencer, head of WildLab and Associate Professor of Ecology at Western Sydney University shared his knowledge of turtles as well as provided an interactive take home Unit activity. Watch Ricky's video from the event below, watch out for Turtle Month Challenge next month (November) and log your turtle sightings into TurtleSAT.org.au.

Finally, thank you again to our fabulous event committee and volunteers who make this event possible:

• Carol Peterson, LIC

• Elizabeth Baker, First Aid

• Leisa Evans, Security

• Jenny Duffus, Security

• And the entire hot water team!

Save the date for next year’s Great Guide Sleepover— 24 August 2019!
