In 1929, Stock Markets and Banks Crashed, meaning people lost nearly everything.

Unemployment swept the nation as many Texans started leaving to find work.

Unemployment for Minorities was twice that of the entire population.

Dust Bowl

Dust Storms could reach up to 1000 feet high!!

Dust Storms blanketed farms and ranches.

Droughts and high winds created these and they destroyed farms.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President in 1932 winning 90% of Texans vote.

His recovery plans were known as the New Deal.

The New Deal was a wide range of recovery plans to rebuild the nation; from the National Youth Administration (NYA), to the Public Works Administration (PWA).

Works Progress Administration (WPA) hired 600,000 Texans.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), was founded by Ben Garza in 1929.

LULAC fought to desegregate the schools in Del Rio.

LULAC still fights for Civil Rights today!

While America was rebuilding, Germany (Hitler), Japan (Hirohito) and Italy (Mussolini) had new dictators come to power and signed a treaty with each other.

Hitler and the Nazi Party took control of Germany in 1932, seven years later invades Poland; Starting World War Two.

Attack on Pearl Harbor

December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor is Bombed by Japanese Fighter Pilots. One day later America declares war on Japan.

Germany declares war on America.

45,000 German, Italian and Japanese-Americans were held in Prisoner of War Camps (POW) from 1942-1945.

Women were given new opportunities during the war to work in factories.

The Fair Employment Practices Committee made sure minorities were treated fairly.

America fought the war on two fronts, helping the Soviet Union fight off the Germans in Europe (Army, Marines, Air Force). In addition to fighting the Japanese in Asia (Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard).

After being surrounded following the Battle of the Bulge, Germany surrenders in 1945.

After being devastated twice by Atomic Bombs, Japan surrenders in 1945.
