TheGreatApeHeartProject(GAHP)hostedaworkshoponSeptember26inPortland,ORatthe2015AmericanAssociaDonofZooVeterinarians(AAZV)MeeDng.TheworkshopwaspartoftheGAHP’s2012NaDonalLeadershipGrantfromtheInsDtuteofMuseumandLibraryServices(NLG-IMLS).Thethree-yearIMLSgrantprovidedfinancialsupporttocreatearobust,online,cardiacdatabasesystemtobeusedbyzooandmedicalprofessionals,researchersandothersubjectmaUerexperts(SME’s)astheycollecDvelyworktoassess,treatandpreventcardiovasculardiseaseingreatapes.TheprimaryobjecDveofthemeeDngwastointroducetheGAHPExecuDveCommiUeetothenewdatabaseaswellastoupdatethemonGAHPprogressandacDviDestodate.TheGAHPdecidedtohostthemeeDnginconjuncDonwithAAZVsothattheinformaDoncouldfurtherbedisseminatedtozooveterinariansandotherparDcipantsintheproject,whilealsogainingperDnentfeedbackfortheproject.

iniDatetreatmentsofCVD.EveryoneonpanelagreedthatthereareaspectsofanabnormalechocardiogramthatweallthinkareworthtreaDng,butdisagreementexistsbetweentheveterinarycardiologistsandthehuman/MDcardiologistsinsomeareas.AllpanelistsagreedthatwhenyouseeaheartwithsystolicdysfuncDon,treatmentwithaceinhibitorsisappropriate.
o MoredisagreementexistswhenthereisnosystolicdysfuncDon,butjustthicknessintheheart.Allagreedthatifcardiacthickeningisduetohypertension,thattreatmenthasbeenshowntobetherapeuDc.However,theliteratureisnotclearonthebenefitsoftreatmentwhenthereisnoclearcauseofthehypertrophy.
o BillDevlin:inhumansthickeningoftheventricleisnotnormalanditistreatedwithanaceinhibitor.Ifwewaitbadthingsaregoingtohappenifthetherapyhaslowriskwhynottreat.SomeuseENALAPRIL5-20mg2xperday.LISINOPRILisaoncedailyACE-I2.5to40mgdaily.
