A NOTE FROM HEAD COACH DAN WIRNSBERGERGreetings

    from Lewis-

    burg!

    We are fin-

    ishing up an-

    other grueling

    preseason and

    the men are

    working ex-

    tremely hard.

This is a special year for us as we will begraduating our first class of seniors in the

newly reinstated program. When I reflect

back to my first year with these young

men, and think about all the uncertainties

and possibilities of taking over a new

program, I am amazed as to how far they

have come in such a short period of time.

Its given me a sense of accomplishment

that Ive never experienced in my coach-

ing career, and I feel so blessed to be a

part of it. To be able to take a group of

young freshman and watch them grow

and mature into seasoned veterans of the

    sport has been truly rewarding.

    However, along with added experi-

ence and maturity come added goals

and expectations. Every year we try

to enhance our schedule and this year

is no different. We will be hosting 22-

    later that afternoon.

    The Bucknell Athletics Hall of

Fame was established in 1979 to

honor the very best in the history

of Bison athletics. This years in-duction brings to 211 the number

    of outstanding student-athletes,

    coaches, administrators and friends

    of Bucknell whose contributions to

    Bucknell athletics are forever pre-

served in the Hall of Fame.

    Marchetti 91 was a three-time

    qualifier for the NCAA Wrestling

    Championships, and as a sopho-

more in 1989 he became Buck-

    nells very first wrestling All-

    American when he placed fourth

at 167 pounds. Marchetti earnedthree consecutive East Coast Cco-

    nference titles from 1989-91, and

    he was named Outstanding Wres-

tler at the 1990 ECC Champion-

    ships. He graduated as Bucknells

    all-time winningest wrestler with

    a 106-24 mark (the 106 wins now

    ranks second all-time behind fel-

low Hall of Famer Bobby Ferraros

    118). His 31 victories in 1990-91

    were second-most in program his-

tory at the time, while his 45-7

dual-match record was third-bestall-time. Marchetti remains one

of only five Bucknell wrestlers to

win 80 percent of his matches over

a four-year career, and he also set

school marks for pins in a season

    (19) and career (41).

    Marchetti was a Freshman All-

American in his first year at Buck-

nell and was nationally ranked in

each of his final three seasons. A

    Christy Mathewson Award winner

as the top senior athlete in his class,

Marchetti was a two-year team cap-

tain. Bucknell posted a 38-20 dual-

meet record during his career and

    finished as the conference runner-

up three times. He is Bucknells

    fifth wrestling Hall of Famer.

    Q & A WITH SENIOR

ALL-AMERICAN ANDY RENDOSWhats your favorite thing to do when

    you arent training or wrestling?

Hunting and fishing -- just to get away

from the stress of wrestling and the wear

and tear it puts on your body.

How was your summer? What did you

    do?

My summer was good. It was spent

at Bucknell taking class, working, and

    training for the upcoming season.

What has been the greatest/favorite moment in your career as a Bison wrestler?

My defining moment at Bucknell was achieving All-American status last year.

Who is your favorite wrestler on the team and why?

Derek Reber, because he is a hard worker and is the future of this program.

Which freshman has caught your eye dur-

    ing training this fall?

Joe McMullan because he has been at Buck-

nell all summer trying to get better.

How does it feel to be part of thefirst class

of seniors since the reinstatement of the

wrestling program? Does it give you a

sense of pride to know you were part of

making history & putting Bucknell back

    on the map?

It feels really great to be part of this program and see how it has progressed from

nothing into what it is today. Im very proud to be part of the first recruiting classthat helped put Bucknell Wrestling back in the national spotlight.

Other than your teammates, who is your favorite wrestler to watch compete and

    why?

Darrion Caldwell, because he is exciting to watch and you never know what he is

    going to do.

What are your goals for the season -- both individually and for the team?

Individually, my goal is to win an NCAA title. For the

team, I want to be ranked in the Top-20 by the end of the

    season.

What is the best piece of advice you can give to an in-coming freshman that is looking to have an immediate

    impact?

Dont give up! The wrestling season is long and hard. The

more you put into the sport, the more you get out of it.

What current wrestler do you most want and chance to

    wrestle this season and why?

Ryan Morningstar, because I should have beaten him at

Iowa last year and he placed ahead of me at NCAAs. It is sort of a grudge match.

When I was a kid, I can remember packing a bunch of friends and teammates

into a van and driving out to Grace Hall to watch Lehigh wrestle whenever they

hosted a big-name program. I can remember the excitement and anticipation of

watching two guys battle and give everything they had for seven minutes. Every

dual there were personal rivalries and upsets. In a one-on-one sport, anything

can happenespecially in the right environment.

When the Iowa Hawkeyes roll into town on Friday, November 27th, there

will be a handful of personal rivalries and there will be plenty of opportunity

for upsets. The Bison boast six returning NCAA qualifiers, one of which is anAll-American; the Hawkeyes, who need no introduction, return seven NCAA

qualifiers and five All-Americans. There will be a few intriguing matchups

which include a few rematches from last years dual in Iowa City. First, Dave

Marble will take on All-American Daniel Dennis. Marble, who is on pace to

be one of the most-winning wrestlers in Bucknell history, will look to avenge

last years lopsided defeat. The second rematch will be Kevin LeValley versus

former NCAA Champion Brent Metcalf. LeValley and Metcalf met twice last

year, and both times Metcalf was the winner by fall. However, LeValley, who is

now in his junior year, is wrestling with much more confidence after this springs

brilliant runner-up performance at University Nationals. The Bison are expect-

ing big things from LeValley this year, but he will have his work cut out for

him against wrestlings golden boy, Metcalf. Thirdly, and perhaps the biggest

rivalry of the day, will feature a battle between All-Americans. Andy Rendos,

who placed 5th last year at the NCAA tournament, will face Ryan Morningstar, who edged out Rendos in last years dual meet on a very controversial call and

also placed ahead of Rendos at NCAAs by finishing 3rd.

Its very rare that a team like the Hawkeyes make their way into our area

for a dual meet. I hope that all of you are able to take the time and come show

your support for Bucknell Wrestling. There is room for everyone, so please

share this experience and bring along a friend. Lets pack Sojka Pavilion, make

some noise, and get ready for some combat! Tickets are on sale now. Get yours

    today!

Tickets for the event can be obtained by calling the Campus Box Office at

570-577-1000 or visiting its Web site, www.bucknell.edu/boxoffice.

    Compliance Booster Q & A-

Q: The Bucknell Wrestling team is going to wrestle

an away match in our hometown. We would love to

show our hospitality and either treat them to a meal

(either at our home or at a restaurant) or have the team

stay at our home while they are traveling. Would this

    be allowed?

A: Yes. Boosters are allowed to occasionally treat a

team to a meal at their home. They are also permitted

to pay for a meal at a restaurant; however, in order to

be able to account for team expenses and document

that no extra benefits were involved Bucknell Ath-

letics requires this arrangement to be made ahead of

time by a donation to the Bison Club for the specific

sport that would like to help. When it is time for the

meal to be purchased at the restaurant, the coach is

then permitted to pay for the entire traveling party,

but is not permitted to purchase the meal for any oth-

    er people in attendance.

As far as having the team stay at your home, this too

would be permissible provided there is a coach stay-

ing with the team as well (from a risk management

perspective) and the student-athletes are allowed the

same accommodations as they would have in a hotel. That is to say, they are not allowed to watch pay-per-

view movies without paying for them, they may not

use the family car for any reason, and they are not

allowed to snack in the kitchen. If any of these things

occurred it would constitute an extra benefit for the

    student-athlete.

If you have any questions about this column, please

contact the Compliance Office at 570-577-3070 or

    talk with your head coach.

The Official Newsletter for Bison WRESTLING Alumni, Parents & Friends

    Dear Friend of Bison Wrestling:

Energy, passion, and togetherness have been the hallmarks of the Bucknell Wrestling Program for many years. This has been true not only for the wrestlers on the matt, but for the group of supporters who have helped our pro-

gram each year. As most of you know, the University budget covers only a fraction of the operating expenses to run

a competitive Division I wrestling program.

This year, we have been given a fundraising goal of $60,000 to meet our programs budgetary needs. This

money is spent in the three main areas of student-athlete recruitment, purchasing equipment to help train our team

members, and covering the travel, lodging, and food costs for our teams travel. As you know, student-athlete

recruitment is a year-round and highly competitive and intensive process that is of essential importance in fielding

successful teams. In addition, we feel it is important to be able to travel safely, stay in quality hotels, and feed our players appropriately when

    we travel.

I am well aware that we are in a difficult time economically. At the same time, our program needs your financial support to continue in

our quest for excellence. Your earmarked contribution for wrestling to the Bison Club will help make this a reality. We hope we can count

on 100% participation from everyone on our support team.

Thanks in advance for your assistance! Dan Wirnsberger --- Head Wrestling Coach
