November 2018 Dear friends – I write this month with two invitations. First: you should have received a packet of information about this year’s stewardship campaign (if you haven’t, my apologies - they are available at church or by calling the church office). The invitation to you is to spend some time reading the information in the packet and prayerfully reflect on how you can best support our ministry here at St. Matthew’s in 2019. Your completed pledge card can be brought or mailed to church; our final in-gathering celebration is Sunday, November 18 th . Now, I know most of us don’t like talking about money, for a lot of good reasons. Maybe, like me, thinking too much about money makes you anxious. Maybe, like me, you wish that we didn’t have to talk about money in church. Maybe, like me, it seems like there's never really enough money, that one unplanned emergency might wipe you out. But then I remember this amazing thing that I've learned about God over the years: God's call takes us to places where there are more than enough resources. Read that again: God's call takes us to places where there are more than enough resources. Enough love. Enough forgiveness. Enough room. Enough bread. Enough wine. Even, enough money. That said, our stewardship campaign is not meant to make anyone feel guilty or anxious. The vestry, wardens, and I are grateful for every pledge of support, large or small. And, if your financial situation is such that you cannot pledge this year, please know that we are grateful that you are here, grateful for the many ways you support St. Matthew’s, and grateful for your prayers. Thank you for your support. The second invitation: I hope you will join us for our Celebration of Renewed Ministry on Wednesday, November 14 th at 7 pm. Bishop DeDe will lead us in worship and preach, we’ll be joined by clergy from around the diocese and the Liverpool community, we’ll sing some great hymns with our talented choir, and have a great evening celebrating being St. Matthew’s Church! (Plus, you can meet my parents, who will be here from Fort Wayne!). I know this is a busy time of year and that weekday nights can be a challenge, but I promise you will be uplifted and inspired while we praise God together. Peace, Fr. Paul ************************************************************************************ WINE AND CHEESE PARTY AND SILENT AUCTION EVENT This coming Saturday, November 3rd, at 5pm, in the Parish Hall for the Wine and Cheese Party and Silent Auction is the place to be! Preparation: 1. Bring in a gift basket, a gift card, a gift certificate, and/or a home-made item. They can be dropped off at the church whenever the office is open or dropped off by 10am on Saturday. 2. Buy your favorite beverage to share or keep for yourself – we won’t judge. And it doesn’t have to be wine or even alcohol. 3. Make your favorite appetizer to share – don’t forget to bring the recipe along, too 4. Be sure to have plenty of cash or your check book with you. The items I’ve seen or heard about so far are AMAZING!! Last year we had a lot of people come in to help with the set up on Saturday morning. Please don’t assume that we’ll have that many again this year. When that happens, then no one shows up. As I’ve always said…. Many hands make light work. We’ll be meeting in the Parish Hall at 9:30am. There’ll be coffee and donuts to start the day right. Feel free to call Gail Jones or Larry Mathews (our numbers are in the directory) with questions. Can’t wait to see you there!!

BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK NEWS:

Many thanks to everyone who generously contributed and supported our “Support A Student” campaign. Through your kindness, we raised over two thousand dollars which will be used to purchase food items for the students at Seymour Dual Language Academy. Your continued generosity of contributions to the food drives helps keep overall costs lower. Your monetary contributions allow the folks at St. Paul’s who do the purchasing of food items that can’t be bought in the grocery store to stretch their food dollars. Long story short, every dollar or food item contributed goes a long way. Thank you all so much.

As you may have seen in the newsletter, a group of us from St. Matthew’s packed two hundred “backpacks” last week. We had a very efficient group (I was not one of the efficient ones) and we were done in less than an hour. I should note that the backpacks are actually plastic bags. I was told the original backpacks lasted a week. Since all the participants in Blessings are under ten years old, I don’t think that comes as much of a surprise. Our next packing date is tentatively scheduled for November 14 at 1:00. However, this has yet to be confirmed. There is a sign-up by the kitchen door. I will keep you posted.

Again, many, many thanks for your generosity and support! ~Clinnie, Amy, and all of Outreach

ANGEL TREE

As we are fast approaching the holiday season (where does the time go) I would like to announce that we are once again sponsoring children for the Prison Fellowship Angel Tree Program. I have requested 30 names for this year, all living in the Onondaga County/Oswego County area. The names will go on our Christmas tree the Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 22nd and will need to be returned by December 9th to allow plenty of time for distribution. Once again, I thank you in advance for all your support for this

program. Some kids will have a more joyful Christmas thanks to your generosity! Thank you again!

~Cathy Labaucki, Angel Tree Coordinator

HOLIDAY WEAVING WORKSHOPS WITH BONNIE GALE:

Bonnie Gale, Willow Artist, will be conducting two holiday weaving workshops in November and December 2018. These workshops will be held at St. Mathew’s Parish Hall.

WORKSHOP 1: Saturday, November 17th, 1.30 to 4.30pm: HOLIDAY WREATH MAKING

In this workshop, participants will have the choice to make a full-sized Fall or Christmas themed wreath with embellishments. Folks will be provided with a simple willow hoop. Participants will then actually weave the form of the wreath themselves with prepared willow rods. By alternating the direction of the weave, a thick honeycomb structure is created. This wreath is completely recyclable for any holiday. No hot glue is needed! Fall and Christmas embellishments will be provided. The cost is $45 for tuition and materials. Pre-registration is necessary (see below). Please bring sharp pruners and wire cutters to class.

WORKSHOP 2: Saturday, December 1st, 1pm to 4pm: HOLIDAY WOVEN ORNAMENTS.

In this workshop, participants will have a choice of ornaments to make and it is expected that several will be made per person. There is a choice of trees, stars, bells, balls, reindeer, mini-wreaths and Carolina snowflakes. The cost is $40 for tuition and materials. Pre-registration is necessary (see below). Please bring sharp pruners and scissors to class.

REGISTRATION: If you wish to attend, pre-registration is necessary. Space is limited. Please call or email Bonnie at 607-336-9031 or [email protected] at least two days before the workshop. She needs time to prepare the materials. Please bring pruners, scissors and wire cutters to class (see above) plus payment in the form of check or cash (preferred). Please contact Bonnie, if you have questions and need more info.

PRAYER REQUESTS

We're grateful to be able to pray for our parishioners, family members, and friends who are in need, and we think it is important to make these concerns known to our community. We generally keep folks on this list for about four weeks, unless we're aware of a continuing need. If we’ve removed a prayer request which you would like to appear for another 4-6 weeks, please call the church

office at 315-457-4633 or e-mail us at [email protected]. Thank you for your good help in bringing prayer requests to our attention.

Please pray for:

Matt Hawkins, Bill Hawkins’ son, recovering from surgery Bill Braun, Linda Chambers’ brother, undergoing cancer treatment Cheryl Familo, recovering from surgery Cherie McCauley, Ray Grzenda’s friend, undergoing cancer treatment Lois Stearns, Christina Stearns’ mother-in-law, undergoing cancer treatment Vyrna Brown, Rick Stocking’s sister, battling brain illness

Ongoing:

Pat Martin, Alec Stearns, Sue Turo, Ron Sager, Dora Mae Croyle, Bob Murdock, Jennifer, Laura McGaffick, Nicole Canavan ILLNESS OR HOSPITALIZATION: We want to pray for you if you are ill, having surgery, or facing any sort of difficulty. We also want to visit you when you are in the hospital. In the past, hospitals notified the church office when our parishioners were admitted. However, due to changes in privacy laws they are no longer allowed to notify us, or in some cases, even to confirm whether or not a person has been admitted. We now must rely on family and friends to let us know when someone has been hospitalized. Please help us with this important ministry by calling the church office (315-457-4633) whenever you know about an illness or hospitalization. Many thanks.
