"G randurson"

Part 1 Submitted by Jessie McLam, Granville County Genealogy Society 17 46

"Grandurson" is the name given to the productive tobacco section oflower Granville County, upper Durham County, and lower Person County. It consists of about 40,000 acres. Most of the farms were owned by the families who worked them. Much of the land of"Grandurson" had been passed down from father to son since the time of the American Revolution War or before, and the land continued to be productive. There were less than 500 families living in "Grandurson".

By July 16, 1941, the War Department had investigated the area and decided to construct a military camp there, if one were needed. By 1942 the camp was a reality. The government bought up the farm land, and about 400 families were relocated to make way for the camp construction. They left their peaceful farms and their ancestral residences unwillingly, but with little complaint. Their voices were weak and very low amid the thunderous sounds of the Second World War.

The construction of Camp Butner affected churches as well as farms. Eight congregations were disbanded: Roberts' Chapel (Methodist), Knapp of Reeds (Missionary Baptist), Camp Creek (Primitive Baptist), Tar River (Primitive Baptist), Calvary (Methodist), Mount Vernon (Missionary Baptist -Black), Mount Level (Missionary Baptist -Black) and Moore's Grove (Primitive Baptist -Black). Most of the congregations seemed meekly resigned to leaving and accepting "government money" for church property.

Family burial grounds and church cemeteries had to be re-located as well. The government paid $34.00 for each of 1638 bodies that were dis-interred, transported, and re-buried. Each body was put in a box of rough pine with a cardboard marker, which recorded data about the deceased. Stone markers were disassembled and reset at the new grave. Of the 163 8 graves moved, 1208 were unnamed; 430 named. The government bought land at Stem for a re-burying ground. This cemetery was originally called Bowling Mountain Cemetery, but was changed to Community Memorial Gardens in 1957. There were two sections - one for Whites and one for Blacks, separated by a strip of woods. At least 74 bodies were re-interred elsewhere, mostly in church cemeteries. Some cemeteries, judged out of the way, were left alone and the families of those interred were issued special visiting passes.

Roberts Chapel Methodist Church

In 1892 E.P. ROBERTS, a leading citizen of the community known as "Coon Hill", gathered the young people together at the public school house for Sunday School services. In 1894 a church was organized. Mrs. Alice (Ailey JONES) ROBERTS gave two acres ofland for the church building and cemetery, and the church was named Roberts Chapel. With the construction of Camp Butner, this congregation disbanded, and 79 graves were relocated (27 of these were unnamed). Following is a list of the graves moved and the relocation site:

100 Years Ago submitted by Eva Spears

o The year is 1902, one hundred years ago .. . what a difference a century makes. Here are the US statistics for 1902

o The average life expectancy in the US was forty-seven (47).

o Only 14 percent of the homes in the US had a bathtub.

o Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost $11 .00.

o There were only 8, 000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads.

o The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

o Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1. 4 million residents, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.

o The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.

o The average wage in the US was 22 cents an hour.

o The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

o A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year; a dentist, $2,500; a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year; and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

o More than 95 percent of all births in the US took place at home.

o 90 percent of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as 'substandard.'

o Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

o Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound.

o Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

o Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason.

o The five leading causes of death in the US were (1) pneumonia and influenza, (2) tuberculosis, (3) diarrhea, (4) heart disease and (5) stroke.

o The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.

o The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was 30.

o Crossword puzzles, canned beer and iced tea hadn't been invented.

o There were no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

o One in ten US adults couldn't read or write. Only six percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

o Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at comer drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health."

o Eighteen percent of households in the US had at least one full-time servant or domestic.

o There were only about 230 reported murders in the entire US.

A Woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a fly swatter. "What are you doing?" she asked. "Hunting flies." he responded. "Killing any?" she asked. "Yep! Three males and two females," he replied. Intrigued, she asked, "How can you tell?" "Three were on a beer can; two were on the phone," he said.

I am trying to find vital records on Col. Joseph HESTER, his siblings, and parents. Joseph was born about 1793 - 99 in Granville County and died in Fayetteville, Lincoln County, TN about 1848. From evidence found in his will in Lincoln County, filed in 1842, it appears that he was a man of means and his tombstone indicates that he was 49 years of age when he died.

Outstanding Events in Granville Co. Public Ledger, July 23, 1929

Some of the Things the Older Citizens Remember.

The little streamlet that passes through the High School ground is fed by a spring on Spring Street a few yards eat of Bell Street. Many years ago, it was claimed by aged residents, the water from this spring was a panacea for all ailments.

In the lowlands, a half mile below this spring, there is a large flat rock protruding about the ground. We were told that the people of Oxford during the War Between the States swept this rock clean for the purpose of burning corncobs for soda. The marks of the fire on the stone sixty years ago are still visible.

On the hillside above this stream is a climber of wild grape vines from which twigs were cut during the period of the War Between the States to make hoopskirts for the belles of that period. This vine survived its many trimmings and is in a healthy state today, but the styles have undergone a radical change and the vine will never be used again for the same purpose.

Another aged citizen with a good memory informs the Public Ledger that the snowstorm that swept down on Oxford during the winter of 1857 was the severest in his recollection. The snow fell to the depth of five feet on level ground and drifted in places to a depth of ten feet. It was impossible for several days, he said, to walk from the Osborn Hotel on Williamsboro street to Horner Hill.

Another aged citizen with a keen memory recalls the great flood in this section during the Spring of 1870. Every bridge in Granville County was washed away and the roads were impassable for several weeks. At the Harrisburg crossing of the old Oxford and Henderson road, a mile east of Oxford, a man and his daughter in attempting to cross the stream in a buggy were washed down stream a hundred yards and lodged in the fork of a tree and were rescued during the night. The horse was suffocated and the buggy badly demolished, he said.

The outstanding event in the memory of an aged citizen was the early frost in 1881. If his memory serves him right, the night of 14th of August of that year was so cold it was necessary to build a log fire to heat the house warm. A heavy frost accumulated during the night and all vegetation was killed and the leaves fell from the trees a few days later. The reason he remembers the event so well, he said, was because a colored boy on his father's place touched his tongue to a broad wagon tire to see if it was frost. His tongue stuck to the tire and he was released by the use of hot water, he said.

Another aged citizen recalls the financial crisis in 1892. The whole country was wild, he said. Everybody lost confidence and you could not borrow a cent and everybody was afraid to loan what little cash they had in hand. Every man you met talked about "hard times" and dreamed about "tight times," he said. He wound up by saying that the present generation has no conception what a financial panic means, and "I never want to see another one so long as I live."

Speaking of ancient building in our midst, no one in Oxford is old enough to remember when the present court house was built. The key-stone over the front door tells the tale. The comer stone was laid on the Fourth of July 1838 - 91 years ago. Quite a number remember when there was a fence in front of the court house and when the annex was built. The workmanship and the material used in the building is of the best, and the structure is greatly admired for its architectural beauty.

Torch-Light Correspondence The Torch Light, Tuesday, April 17, 1874

Submitted by Kitty Humphries

Walnut Grove, NC., April 6, 1874

Editors Torch-Light:

As many of your readers have never visited this thriving little village I must give a slight sketch of it. It is situated ten miles West of Oxford and contains besides a mineral spring which was resorted to by the Indians before the white man came, a handsome church, a doctors office, three mercantile establishments - two for the sale of dry goods and general merchandise and one for the sale of groceries - a tan yard, a wagon shop, a blacksmith shop, a shoe shop, a harness maker, and last but not least an excellent classical and mathematical school situated some mile or more from the village.

We have also a lodge of grangers. Now I like the grangers for they are the farmers friends; indeed all of them are deeply interested in agriculture. Witness the lodge here. The master is a wheelwright, the treasurer is a miller, the secretary a dry goods clerk who cultivates nothing but his mustache and the door-keeper or sentinel (or whatever the name of his office) is a shoemaker who has not even a potato patch. The remaining male members consist of a merchant, a sewing machine agent and two farmers. Is this a specimen brick of the grange building?

Your correspondent "Bart" has given an account of Shake-rag, a territory adjacent unto these parts which is incorrect in one particular and I wish to set him right. The manufacture of com whiskey did flourish in Shake-rag, but has been abandoned since Bart left the neighborhood. Since his article was published several Oxford men are said to have visited Shake-rag with a view of locating there. He should correct his error about the com whiskey or it may have a disastrous effect on the census propects of Oxford.

The store house and goods of Samuel FOWLER Esq at Center Grove Person Co were destroyed by fire supposed to have originated accidently on Wednesday last. The loss was heavy but the insurance ample. E. M.
