Henry Smith Charity – Holiday Grants The purpose of the Holiday Grants programme is to provide access to recreational trips or holidays for groups of children who experience disadvantage or who have disabilities. In particular they are interested in contributing to trips that would not take place without the funding. Schools, youth groups, not for profit organisations and charities are all eligible to apply for a grant between £500 and £2,500. Applications can be made for grants towards a single trip, which could be a day trip or a longer residential of up to seven days in length. This could be to a countryside or city location but must be outside of the children’s immediate locality. Examples include camping, trips to adventure activity centres or the seaside. Grants are only available to support children who are aged 13 and under. It is very important to them that the funds are targeted at children experiencing disadvantage. By this, they mean those who are located in an area of high deprivation, according to the National Indices of Deprivation. In particular they are interested in funding trips for children in geographical areas that fall within the bottom 20% of these indices. They are also interested in assisting those children who do not have any contributions towards the costs of the trip from their parent/s or carer/s. Please note that sometimes they do consider applications for groups of children living in deprived circumstances within more affluent areas. In this case, it is essential that the need for support is clearly explained. For groups of children with disabilities, they are able to be more flexible regarding the level of deprivation, although they still do take it into account as one factor in the overall assessment. They are able to fund a maximum of two-thirds of the total cost of a holiday or trip as they expect some of the funding to be raised elsewhere. There are regular deadlines, please check details on the website. Tel: 020 7264 4970

In addition to one-off project funding, the Foundation has set up a scheme under the broad heading of New Initiatives. Under this scheme support can be provided on a larger scale (up to £10,000 per annum) for more complex performance projects that may require guaranteed funding over a period of time, initially up to three years. Applicants should be aware that the Trustees are taking some time to reflect on key areas of success to ensure the New Initiatives funds are most effectively deployed in future rounds. Therefore, the scheme is temporarily suspended. The Trustees are principally concerned with providing support for the performance of contemporary music, which may include commissioning of new work, non-commercial recording or even publication. The Trustees will occasionally provide funds for research projects not being conducted under the aegis of an academic institution. There are three deadlines per year, please check website for details. E-mail: [email protected]

Independence at Home Independence at Home supports independence at home for people with disability and long term illness by providing grants between £200 and £600 to help meet the cost of disability equipment, home adaptations and other essential items that are required because of illness or disability, yet are not available from public funds.

They often work in tandem with funding from other agencies to enable higher value equipment to be purchased or more substantial adaptations to be made. People must be referred from health and social care professionals or from workers of voluntary associations, who have direct knowledge of their service users’ circumstances gained from a professional involvement in their care.

Kids Out The statistics around domestic violence and especially the involvement of children are shocking and disturbing. For children living with domestic violence home is a place of fear and terror rather than the safe and secure place it should be. Thankfully, each year more than 20,000 children escape the abusive situation, usually with their mothers, and make their way to Women’s refuges across the country. After a period of around 6-12 months, most of these families move onto their new home. But moving into a strange community can be particularly tough for children – who have usually left home with nothing more than the clothes they were wearing. KidsOut are here to help these children. They deliver these children a box of brand new toys, age and gender specific. Each Toy Box is filled with games to play, books to read, a teddy to cuddle which they can call their own. Each Toy Box gives children a sense of normality, making the world seem a kinder place where someone cares. It helps them settle in and make new friends, as they can invite other children home to play with their toys. Tel: 01525 385252 E-mail: [email protected]

Funding is at the discretion of the Trustees. The funding can range 'from relatively minor amounts to more substantial special project grants which may be paid over more than one year'. Funding is available towards the costs of publishing scholarly work in the fields of British and Irish national, regional and local history, archaeology, antiquarian studies, historical geography, the history of art and architecture, heraldry, genealogy and surname studies, archival research, artefact conservation and the broad fields of the heritage, conservation and the historic environment. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that the work being funded will make a new and significant contribution to knowledge.

Publication grants are intended to help with production costs, including the costs of illustrative material

Research grants are intended to cover incidental expenses, such as the cost of travel and accommodation within the UK/Ireland to visit archives; they are not intended to cover time spent in research and writing. To qualify, the work must already have been provisionally accepted for publication

Special project grants will be considered from time to time for special projects that do not fit easily into one of the above categories, such as the conservation, cataloguing, scanning, transcription and study of significant primary sources, or the conservation and study of significant artefacts. To qualify, original research and the publication of the results has to be part of the project

Journal digitisation grants will be considered for applications from local and national archaeological and historical societies towards the costs of publishing their journal backlists online, on condition that the results are made available to all, without charge and in perpetuity. To be eligible for such funding, applicants must be able to demonstrate that they already have 50 per cent of the costs in the bank

The annual deadlines for applications are 1st March and 1st August. E-mail: [email protected]

Grants of up to £1,000 are available. Funding is available to voluntary groups and societies, and individuals. The scheme is primarily designed to encourage research, so proposals which are essentially to do with promotion (for example new guidebooks, displays, or exhibitions) will normally fall outside the Fund. Funding is available for original research. Grants can be to support new work, or to support the completion of research already in progress, for example, by paying for a specific piece of analysis or equipment. Projects which work with young people or encourage their participation are especially encouraged. In principle, almost anything that is directly related to the actual undertaking of a project is eligible for support. Examples of what could be applied for include equipment, drawing

They recognise the huge demands, both emotional and financial, that caring for a sick or disabled child can make. They do what they can to make life a little easier for families in difficulty by providing the vital daily items that are often overlooked and yet add up to many thousands of pounds every year – for example, bath mats and hoists, mobility equipment, learning and communication equipment, plastic sheets and feeding tubes.
