GRANT FUNDING NEWSLETTER
Award for Postsecondary Comprehensive Transition Programs
The State of Florida through the University of Central Florida has awarded BCPS $433,000 to support students with unique abilities to develop living and employability skills. According to Think College, research shows that individuals with an intellectual disability that have completed a postsecondary transition program are more than three times likely than adults with developmental disabilities in the general population to achieve employment. This grant will support The Build Your Future Program at Sheridan and McFatter Technical Colleges that offers career preparation and job coaching and placement in a chosen technical field to students with developmental disabilities. Congratulations to Christy Bradford, Curriculum Supervisor – CTACE and team for your grant writing success.
Volunteer Florida – AmeriCorps Grant
Multi-year AmeriCorps grants are awarded to eligible organizations proposing to engage AmeriCorps members in evidence-
based or evidence-informed interventions to strengthen communities. An AmeriCorps member is an individual who engages in community service through an approved national service position. As part of a $264,600 grant to BCPS, 21
AmeriCorps members will be assigned to seven targeted schools throughout the District. In this pilot program, AmeriCorps members will provide academic tutoring, lead school-based mindfulness initiatives, and help organize Broward County Public Schools Day of Service and Love at schools across the District. Congratulations to Dr. Philip Harris, Program Manager, Recovery – Student Support Initiatives and Recovery on receiving the grant.
Hard Rock Heals Foundation Grant
Congratulations to Bethune Elementary School of the Arts for receiving a $5,000 grant from the Hard Rock Heals, through the Broward Education Foundation, Foundation to support the school’s magnet arts program. Extensive research shows that arts education integrated throughout the curriculum benefits participating students through increased math and reading test scores, improved attendance rates, increased parent and community engagement, and decreased student suspensions and expulsions. Thank you, Aneatra King, Specialist, Community Engagement - Office of Family and Community Engagement for establishing the relationship with the donor and for working with GA staff to develop and submit the proposal.

How many grants have you been awarded and what is the total dollar amount awarded?
Prior to working for BCPS, I worked for University of Miami—Medical Campus grant funded office, which meant you wrote and sustained your grants to get a portion of your salary. Those grants were from NIH, HCOPs, as well as state and federal funding. Now years later, I find myself writing grants again. Within the last four years that I have been teaching computer science I have applied for seven grants of which two were funded. One was a two-year in-kind donation valued at $12,000 from ST Math and the other was a $5 million grant from Digital Promise-Verizon Innovative Learning that supports my school and four others.

GRANT FUNDING NEWSLETTER
Which grant-supported project is your favorite?
My favorite is the Verizon/ASU Immersive Media grant. With this grant my students and I received VR headsets, digital video cameras, cell phones, and best of all, a fully functional Canvas course that introduced my students to projects such as embedding images into everyday things or locations. They had such fun and learned new digital technology skills. While I as an instructor received support and professional development to learn how to use these tools to deliver instructions, and we, my students, got to participate in a collaborative community across the nation through this initiative.
What is your process for filling out a grant application?
Ah, the process. First, contact Grant’s Administration to let them know your intent. Then I spend time with a highlighter and my glasses to read the requirements and performance requirements of the grant. Having come from a medical school environment, I always err to site of an “IRB” when looking at the performance requirements. If it compromises or even looks like the data collection piece outweighs the value to my students, then I move on.
Do you have any grant writing tips?
The grant writing tip that I have is to be persistent and persevere. If you don’t get funded your first time, try again. As well, start small. Also, it is always good to check in first with the Grants team. I remember writing a grant application for a grant that was advertised in the grants writing lists. I proceeded to writing as it was the weekend. I completed most of it and then spoke to Grants only to find out that it was for a 503B, which we don't qualify for.
Grants are a powerful tool to enhance teaching and learning throughout our District. Please take the opportunity to have your grants showcased in one of our upcoming newsletters by submitting your photos with the subject line Grants In Action, and email your action photographs of activities associated with grant awards to [email protected]. This is another opportunity to acknowledge our grant donors for their support and to showcase the innovative learning experiences developed by our school-based staff!
“Adriana Ermoli-Miller made the

was so knowledgeable and yet

The UF/IFAS Extension Family Nutrition Program (FNP) has provided free nutrition education to SNAP-eligible children and families in Florida for 24 years. FNP assists limited resource families to make healthier choices on a budget and adopt healthier eating and physical activity habits to reduce the risk of obesity and chronic disease. Schools are eligible to receive FNP gardening support if 50% or more of their students qualify for free or reduced lunch and if they participate in FNP direct education classes. FNP provides garden planning support, supplies and curriculum to enhance nutrition education in schools. Due to Covid-19, school technical assistance by the Food Systems Specialist will be provided virtually and garden supplies will be delivered directly to schools. Click here for additional information or contact Donna Clerkin at [email protected] or Carlita Fiestas-Nunez at [email protected].
There are countless ways to focus learning around a pet in the classroom. From in-class assignments to take-home projects and from coloring pages to crafts, there are great ideas to enhance student learning through pets. Pets in the Classroom provides financial support to teachers to purchase and maintain small animals in the classroom. LEARN MORE HERE. Congratulations to Debra B.
