Y5 Cathedral Choristers receive

their surplices

Last Sunday was a special one for the Cathedral choristers. During the morning service, the Y5 probationers were presented with their surplices, the sign of promotion to full membership of the Cathedral Choir. This is the culmination of two years’ training—four morning rehearsals, three weekday Evensongs and two Sunday services each week, with additional special events. Their surplices are well earned! Congratulations to Finn McCormack-Young, Angus Whitteker, Ollie du Toit, William Luhrs and Sea-am Thompson (front row). On Sunday evening, the Choir sang the magnificent Advent Carol Service, heralding the coming of Christ. For our Y8s, it also heralds their final Christmas as a Cathedral chorister. We offer Oscar Parkes, William Rowe-Lucas, Rupert Pett, Timo Niehausmeier, Joshua Erasmus and Damian Fraser our best wishes as they create their final memories of singing and service.

Just under three weeks to go?! Silly season has well and truly hit! Mind you, we are all used to it and it helps appreciate the pending break that much more.

Congratulations and well done to our amazing choristers! I attended the Advent Carol Service at the Cathedral on Sunday and was fortunate to hear the boys sing a number of beautiful pieces throughout the service. It was the most I have heard them sing and I was highly impressed with the quality of their astonishing voices. It was a wonderful reflection of their talent, hard work and dedication. Many thanks to Mr John Linker, Director of Music, ChristChurch Cathedral, for his work with the choristers.

We have another very active week this week with the Y7 Leadership Programme, Y4&5 swimming, Y6 surfing, Y7&8 attending the annual Tough Kids’ Competition, the Top Teams’ Challenge for Y4-8 and the Y7 Amazing Race on Friday. This sounds like a lot of fun and great activities to be engaged in at the end of the year. Many thanks to all of the parents who are helping out with these events. Clearly they would not go ahead without you; we very much appreciate your support. Have a great time!

I am now in a position to confirm that Miss Libby Avery will be the acting Head of Pre-School until a permanent person is recruited. We have also employed Mr Aaron Beaumont through until the end of July 2017. Aaron had a teaching placement here in Term III and has been employed in the Pre-School this term as a staffing replacement after Mrs Stock resigned. It is great to be able to se-cure Aaron for a further period of time. You should have also received an email yesterday confirm-ing that Mr Owen Foster has been appointed as Dean of the Boys’ School. This email was sent yes-terday to coincide with the official announcement at Medbury School, which is where Owen cur-rently works.

As per standard procedure at Grammar, the 2017 classes and staffing structure will be sent out this Friday. As a part of this, we will outline who is teaching which year levels and subjects. However, I do need to make it clear there could be some minor changes as we are still working through the structure of our timetable for 2017. There is a delay in this due to the recruitment processes we have been working through; some changes we are looking to make with our use of staffing; and we are working with Christ’s College to see if we can timetable time for our Y7&8s to participate in technology education.

As the class placements, student leader positions and prizes are announced in the coming days, it is important that we as adults role model effectively and appropriately how to handle and deal with news that may not be as we had wished. We all want the best for our children and have aspirations for them to be successful and selected for a variety of positions. However, we also know that in life, decisions do not always go our way and the people who are charged with making these have done so with the best information they have at hand. Yes, we may believe our child deserved the role or prize, but so do many other parents and the reality is there may be someone more worthy. We see it every year with the Halberg Awards. We all have a view on who the su-preme winner should be, and inevitably many of us disagree with the final decision. I believe it is important that we encourage our children to be understanding, resilient, gracious, have the ability to bounce back and focus on continuing to be positive and applying themselves to the best of their abilities. Sometimes, many times, things don’t go our way. It’s how we react that counts.

Creating Moral Citizens - Virtue of the Week is: Loyalty

What is Loyalty?

Loyalty is staying true to someone. It is stand-

ing up for something you believe in without

wavering. It is being faithful to your family,

country, school, friends and ideals – when the

going get tough as well as when things are

good. When you are a loyal friend, even if

someone disappoints you, you still hang in

there with them. Loyalty is staying

committed.

Congratulations! You are practising Loyalty when you…

Stand up for people and ideas you believe

in

Are a faithful friend through good times

and bad

Don’t allow loyalty to lead you into trouble

Don’t let other’s come between you and

your friends

Are loyal to yourself

Library, Literature, Text Books & Team Shirts

All library, literature studies, text books and team shirts (ie: those shirts issued by sports’ staff for football, tennis, touch, athletics and triathlon) are due back this week. Please assist in the return of these as soon as possible.

Christmas Collection for the City Mission Next Week

Each year we hold a collection for the City Mission to help with their Christmas food drive. We will be collecting food in classes next week. Please assist with robust dried goods (pasta, rice, soups, fruits, nuts) and cans of meats, soups, vegetables and fruit. Biscuits and cakes are to be avoided as they are often squashed and damaged in transit. If you wish to donate treats, packets of lollies, bags of mini chocolate bars and the like travel well. Any fresh produce should be brought in on Friday 9 December and taken straight to the hall.

School Carol Service, Monday 12 December, 7.15pm

The Carol Service reminds us of the true Christmas story, so easily forgotten in the season of hurry-up-and-shop. This service is compulsory for all pupils in Years 1-8. Non-choir pupils sit with their class teachers. There is street parking in the area around the Cathedral which is on Latimer Square, on the corner of Madras and Hereford Streets. Reporting times for the evening service are:

● 6.30pm: Cathedral choristers; Boys’ and Girls’ Chapel Choirs, Junior Choir, Sacristans

● 7.00pm: Remaining pupils

Unaccompanied pupils may be collected from in front of the Cathedral from 8.15pm approximately.

Co-Curricular Notices Top Team Colours’ Challenge, Thursday

Thursday’s inter-House competition involves water. Think the old Top Town tv show but with a budget that can only stretch to buckets and a hose instead of the Para pools! As they will get wet, all Prep pupils require a towel, change of underwear, shirt and socks in a plastic bag, in addition to their usual summer PE uniform and full tracksuit.

Y7&8 Tough Kids Obstacle Race, Wednesday

… at Rawhiti Domain, and run by Sport Canterbury. Think tactical assault course, so the children will get rather wet and dirty. Pupils should wear usual formal uniform to school on Wednesday. In their sports’ bag:

full tracksuit

old shorts –muddy!

old T-shirt – muddy!

sports shoes – muddy!

socks – maybe of the rugby or hockey variety - muddy!

old towel in a plastic bag – muddy!

polyprop shirt – weather forecast is not that flash

school fleece or another fleece or woollen jumper

spare underwear & socks, House shirt & PE shorts (to change into afterwards when less muddy)

fleece beany or woollen hat

sunhat

sunblock

personal medication

drink bottle

Y7 Amazing Race, Friday

The final race time can now be confirmed: pupils should come to school at their normal Friday time, and meet any choir or music commitments that they have before 9.00am.

The race is 9.00am -5.30pm. Pupils will return from the race finish site by bus, arriving at school at 5.30pm at the latest. Should we return earlier, the racers will collapse in an exhausted heap in Prep Room!

For those Y7 children who use the Ohoka minibus, there will be a late run at 5.30pm. (For those Ohoka bus children in other year-groups, the minibus will be a car (!), running at the usual time, 3.40pm)

Race Gear List Notes:

Please add morning tea to your child’s gear for the day but lunch is not required – finding it is part of the race!

The weather forecast is currently inclement! Warm layers and a wind- & waterproof jacket are essential (no puffer jackets, thank you!)

Due to a race route change, togs are no longer required.

In Pre-School we are starting to look very festive with the arrival of the Christmas tree later in the week. The children are enjoying making decorations which they will bring home at the end of this term. As teachers, it is always wonderful to talk with the children about what Christmas means to them. Their ideas are sometimes priceless and I have to say my favourite comment this year has been "Miss Libby did you know that at Christmas time Jesus was born from a donkey and her name was Mary". Just so you all know, we did discuss the Christmas story further so now everyone knows exactly who Jesus’s mother was! Excitement is building for the arrival of the man in the big red suit! And, in the spirit of giving at Christmas, we are practising our carols for both our service and for our visit to the Cathedral Christmas tree on 13 December. You are invited to give your child a small present to leave under the tree when we visit. Presents should be marked ‘for a boy’ or ‘for a girl’. These gifts are distributed by the City Mission to needy children within the city.

The weather has been changeable recently and when sunny and warm the children have been enjoying the water-based activities—particularly the waterslide which Mr Aaron set up. We think the Prep School children and maybe some of the teachers were a little jealous that they could not join in when it was 31°C! We have set up a sunscreen station, which includes a mirror so the children are able to put on their own sunscreen in the afternoon (with assistance, of course). Our programme focuses on empowering children to take responsibility for themselves and their peers. We have been learning the HAT song to reinforce the importance of Slip, Slop, Slap and the children know that they must were a hat outside to protect themselves. I am sure if you ask your child would love to sing the song for you.

On Friday, I watched the Itinerant Teachers’ Music Concert in the Junior School assembly. It is always fabulous to see the children perform in front of an audience. I was thrilled to be able to watch our very own pre-schooler Jordyn Flintoff bravely perform her piano piece Monsieur Mouse as I know she was very nervous. Ka pai, Jordyn; we are very proud of you. Music is a valuable part of our daily programme and if you child is interested in learning an instrument, please contact Mrs Sarah Lowe, the Director of Music.

For those parents who have not yet informed us if their child will be at Pre-School during the week 19—23 December, please let us know as soon as possible. We need to plan staffing.

Swimming starts on Monday (5 December), and the children and teachers are looking forward to learning new skills at Graham Condon Centre. If your child does not attend Pre-School each day, they are encouraged to meet us at the pool for lessons, regardless.

The last few weeks of Pre-School will be busy with swimming, graduation, the Nativity play and the Leavers’ Service. Please see the detailed event list on pages 5-6, or the school calendar on GrammarNet, or look on the Pre-School whiteboard for the reminder sheet.

Have a great week! (As of today it is only 26 more days till Santa arrives - my list is written, I hope yours is too.)

This term is careering to an end but not before we power our way through a large number of activities. The following is just a snapshot of what is taking place over the next week and beyond. In amongst this, there are still classroom lessons taking place.

Our Y7s continue to take part in their leadership challenges. Today, they travelled to Lake Rua, where they were set the task of building a raft that can be operated on the lake. Some got a little damper than others on their test voyages! On Friday, we see the culmination of their activities with the famous Amazing Race—the top secret route cannot be revealed! In nine groups, the pupils follow a myriad of clues that will assist them in completing the 25km race. We wish the teams the very best. It has been an exciting fortnight of challenges and we look forward to the Y7s becoming leaders in the school next year.

This week our Y4 and 5 classes have continued with their swimming lessons. The sessions will finish on Friday with water safety involving life jackets, a boat and pyjamas. Sounds like fun!

Today, our Y6s have enjoyed a day at the beach learning about how to be safe in the surf. Tomorrow our Y7&8 classes will take part in a new event for us, the Tough Kids’ Race at Rawhiti Domain. Pupils will race through a number of obstacles to the finish line—please see the Co-curricular Notice on page 10 for the required gear list; pupils will get muddy!

Thursday sees our annual Top Teams’ Colours’ Challenge run by Sport Canterbury. This is an annual event and involves all Prep children participating in House colour groups through a range of fun, tabloid activities. Some activities do involve water—please see the Co-curricular Notice on page 10 for the required gear list; pupils will get wet!

Currently, classes are working through their poetry reading competitions. The finals will be held next Monday for juniors and Tuesday for seniors—for times, please see the list of major events on pages 5-6.

We look forward to the upcoming House Choirs’ competition at the end of Week VIII. Loyalty will

be running hot as each House performs a song of their choice from the theme Musicals. Mrs

Lowe has encouraged the pupils to dress up to add to the flavour of the event and to promote

House spirit.

The last meeting of the Friends’ Association for 2016 will take place next Monday (5 December) at 7.30pm in the staffroom. All school parents are warmly welcome to attend, which is always the case.

Christmas Class Events

6B had two events this past weekend: evening drinks for the grown-ups on the Friday night and

a boating picnic for all on Sunday at the Antigua Boatsheds, a great venue. There is a large

grassy lawn right next to boat hire, and close to the café where parents could get their coffee

fix. The boys had great fun messing around in boats and out of boats, with some impressive

water pistol action too. Thanks to Class Friend Tara Wingfield for organizing the boating and

the Rothera family for hosting the Friday drinks.

We would love to hear about any Christmas events Class Friends are organizing, and photos would be even better. Please contact us at [email protected]
