Deadline for contributions for The GRILLE COB 28th of each

month

EDITORS’ COMMENT Another month and another newsletter. This one is a little late. Robyn is away at Naval Air Station (NAS) Nowra and by all accounts is freezing her extremities off. So this month is a single effort with all its mistakes. We have also been very busy over the past 3 weeks organising the 8 cadets who are also at NAS for the week, Add to this the meeting being early in the month and me doing a TAFE course in Coffs plus Haemodialysis and no time left.

When I first took over the newsletter I was printing around 70 copies. By a concerted push to reducing our outgoings, we reduced this to 40 prints. The ones not collected were mailed out. With the increase in memberships and 1 in 3 not having email this has now grown to a run of 80 printed newsletters, The majority of these are posted.

Not surprisingly we wore out the club’s printer. We have now worn out the leased printer and are awaiting the repair. As a result the printed newsletter for this month may be late or cancelled.

Regards

Peter & Robyn

PRESIDENT’S REPORT I managed a couple of days at the ‘Cooly Rocks’ held at Tweed Heads, on return from Brisbane but it was spoilt by very ordinary weather. It was certainly the largest display of the 50’- 60’s Muscle Cars that I have seen along with everyone dressed in the 60’s to complement the Event.

The same weekend was the Sprite Club’s visit to Grafton organised by Ian & Wendy Gibbs. The weather again was very unkind to but it did not dampen the gathering at Jabour Park on the Sunday morning, for morning tea, organised by volunteers of the Club. It certainly was not ideal conditions for open top Sport Cars but most of the owners braved the conditions.

The run to Ballina Manor, organised by Lorraine & Tom Raven was well attended by 31 members. It was a very interesting visit, with a History dating back to 1921. The restoration had to be seen, with all interior furnishing being period.

The next Coffee Run is to Botero Coffee Shop McLean on the 13th July, there will be a Tour of the Coffee making & should be an interesting day. Time to get your names in for “Christmas in July” being held at our Club rooms on the 16th July.

August 6th, is our Annual / General Meeting 3 pm at Club Rooms. July 2nd 3pm is the normal meeting at Club Rooms.

The Retro Motorfest is building interest, September 16-17th 2017 with entries being received.

Cheryl Benn has concluded all bookings for the ‘Murray Run’ and all

participants will receive an update shortly.

Regards

Doug Clark

BALLINA MANOR OUTING & GARDENMANIA COFFEE RUN

Despite the wet weather of late, we managed to get two fine days for our June outings.

The coffee run to Gardenmania at Boambee was a little on the cool side, so we were seated indoors at the Fairy Glen café, which was very pleasant looking out to the sunshine. Everyone enjoyed their coffee and a sweet treat selected from various options, way too many decisions! Although the café was lovely, the garden/giftware was not as good as it was when Tom and I visited a couple of years ago, so I was disappointed for anyone who had not been previously. Seven cars made the trip south, with three gathering at Glenreagh for a most enjoyable al fresco lunch at the Golden Dog. No cooking required that evening, after the enormous lunches served.

Tom and I had a false start to Ballina , having to turn around at Tyndale as the Dodge was misbehaving! We managed to return home with lots of back firing, unwrap the Prefect and with all Tom could legally give it, made it in time for the second sitting of morning tea at Ballina Manor.

A lovely morning tea is was too, with a never-ending supply of beautiful scones, delicious jam and wicked cream! Our hosts were very generous in all ways, thoughtfully setting up the dining room, so we could relax out of the wind, and doing two sittings of morning tea to accommodate us comfortably. The tour was very interesting, to learn of the buildings original purpose as a private girls school, and subsequent lives. Our two youngest grandchildren were very intrigued with the old school display, especially the cane, and very pleased it has been replaced with the green slip today!

It is wonderful to know that there are people who are prepared to put their money and efforts into restoring these glorious old buildings and give them a new lease on life. As most of you know, we have done this with our modest little Ivy Cottage, and it has brought a lot of happy memories to many people with it’s nostalgic charm. A visit to past times is always wondrous! We wish them continued success in their venture, and appreciate their kind hospitality to groups such as ours.

Most of the group gathered for a friendly relaxed lunch afterwards at the Ballina RSL, once again staying out of the windy conditions. We had 13 cars attending this outing, thanks to you all for making it such a pleasurable day.

SPRITELY GRAFTON GAD ABOUT

A wet and rather soggy Grafton couldn’t dampen the spirits of 60 Austin Healey Sprite enthusiasts over the June long weekend. We played host to equal numbers from the Sydney based Sprite Car Club of Australia (the oldest Sprite club in the world) and the Sprite Car Club of Queensland, with 17 Sprites in attendance…and some moderns for the less adventurous.

Saturday morning, after a hearty breakfast at the Crown Hotel, we set off on a Heritage walk with guide Marie Howlett in intermittent showers. We wandered down Victoria Street towards the bridge, then back through The Link in Shoppingworld. The timing couldn’t have been better, when we exited The Link the Annual Truck Parade was just passing by. So much shiny chrome!

We rolled into iScream for morning tea. As we are all as old, or older, than our cars we really enjoyed the ambiance of the shop, not to mention the delicious ice creams. From here we wandered back to Sprite Central, The Crown Hotel, to jump in our cars and head out to the Mountainview Hillclimb. There were two regular State level competitors in Sprites having a slippery run at the event - Alan Barlow from Sydney and Steve Purdy from Murwillumbah (Qld club). In the wet conditions, the track records were kept safely locked away.

After a tasty lunch at the Hill climb canteen, the merry throng headed back to town to look over the model train display in the old brewery. Then it was time to dry our exteriors and wet our interiors

back at the pub. Dinner was on the terrace at The Crown followed by the premiere screening of my latest Sprite Torque video series- The Light Weight Midget owned by Nev Mansfield from the Qld club. I also screened The Frite – Colin Dodds (Sydney) Jag powered Sprite and 2013 Clarence Classic Rally video to set the mood for Sunday’s adventure.

Sunday morning we set out for a Briemba Street (Fig Tree Avenue) drive through and a photo shoot riverside of the levee wall in South Grafton. We proceeded down Skinner Street, taking in the historic building along the way, to Jabour Park. Despite everything else happening with the Grafton Vintage Car Club that weekend, a warm, dry club room was offered to the Spriters with a marvelous array of cakes, slices and sandwiches. President Doug did offer the club rooms for us to play cards all afternoon instead of continuing on with our planned “rally” J

With detailed route instructions in hand, we all set off to the Maclean Hotel for lunch via Rogans Bridge and all scenic roads to Maclean. After lunch, some of the Queenslanders headed home as it wasn’t a public holiday up there, others drove straight back to Grafton but there were a few Super Hardy Souls who continued with the scenic route instructions back to Grafton.

Dinner on Sunday night was at the Captain’s Table at Roche’s Family hotel. Everyone marveled at the length of the table and how they got it in the room. Monday morning we had one last breakfast together before everyone went their separate ways.

We only had one Sprite break down during the weekend and you guessed it, it was on the bridge. Fortunately, he was able to nurse the car over to the other side.

Thank you to the Grafton Vintage Car Club for your hospitality.

Wendy Gibbs

Grafton Vintage Motor Vehicle Club Register of interested members to allow vehicles to be utilised at special events

We have previously discussed at our monthly meetings and at committee meetings, the opportunity to commence a register of members who would participate at special events, Weddings, School Formals etc., with their cars. If you are interested, please contact me with details of car, and email address with mobile contact.

I will compile a list of members, and should any requests be received, I would then contact those on the list for volunteers. I appreciate that some members do not want to be involved, but some members have already indicated they would partici-pate, depending on dates and times etc.

I also understand that we are not allowed to hire our vehicles, but mine has been used on numerous occasions, and I simple tell the parties involved, that the car is free, they are just paying me to drive at their function, and I turn up in an old Holden with a ribbon on it. It is then up to me to account for any income received, in the appropriate manner. Laurie Fitzpatrick. [email protected]
