printing business, partly due to DMI workshop where they not only gained in depth knowledge but also got inspiration to go for automation as they had manual screen printing. Read the inspiring stories in the coming pages (2,3,6 & 7).

I am also touched by Grafica customers, featured in this magazine, who say that they are loyal to brand Grafica. They never turn to any other supplier except Grafica whenever they have new investment plans, merely on merit of our quality and technical support. I am thankful to all our customers for reposing trust in brand Grafica. We are committed to serve the screen printing industry with the best technology and technical knowhow.

SUCCESS STORY

Surat based Patel Screen Printers, have achieved tremendous success in their spot UV business. The company has 3 Grafica Nano-Print plus, 2 Nano-UVs, and Nano-Screen Maker 5-in-1.

"Our main focus is on value addition. We undertake Spot UV and UV special effects treatment on all types of commercial prints on job work” reveals Sanjay Patel, one of the partners of Patel Screen Printers, others being Arvind and Girish Patel (all three are brothers).

Interview:What is the reason behind your success? The credit goes to our satisfied customers; our own team efforts in maintaining quality, timely delivery. And of course our special thanks to DMI where we had initially learnt the tricks of value addition during 3-day workshop. We also thank Grafica for

supplying such an excellent screen printing technology. After automation we started growing in screen printing business. And to accommodate our growing business we had to move to a bigger space (1300 sq.ft).

So, do you think DMI workshop & automation are turning points in your business?Yes. We had manual screen printing set up with 3 tables and we were doing petty commercial

jobs only. Before buying Grafica screen printing machine, we had attended DMI's workshop to understand the advanced screen printing process and its application in value addition vis-avis UV special effects. Upon hearing some inspiring words from Bhargav Mistry, DMI's Director, during their workshop, we were fully convinced that there is still bright future in commercial screen printing provided we offer value addition and adopt automation.

Why are you a loyal customer of Grafica? There were cheaper machines available in the market, but we still preferred only Grafica although their price was higher. Grafica Nano-Print plus is a perfect screen printing machine for print finishing/UV special effects owing to its operational advantages. It's production friendly. Their technical support system is next to none. As I said earlier, DMI institute is a great boon to screen printers like us.

To match the growing demand of industrial labels and stickers, including decals for cricket bats and hockey sticks, Jalandhar based Creative Edge has fielded as many as seven (7) semi automatic screen printing machines from Grafica. Creative Edge has the following screen printing machines from Grafica: *Nano-Print plus – 4*Two-Post Pillar – 2*Nano-Print – 1*Complete Screen making set up (exposing and pneumatic fabric stretching equipment) Creative Edge was established in 2002 by Pankaj Sharma and his younger brother Pradip Sharma. They took inspiration from their father-mentor, Suraj Sharma, a veteran screen printer with expertise in sports goods decals printing since 1970s. Keeping in mind their future plans, on 15th August 2016 they shifted to a much bigger factory having 16000 sq.ft.

Creative Edge manufactures and supplies a wide range of decals to sports goods industry in Jalandhar, mainly cricket bats and hockey sticks. It also manufactures water transfer decals for sports helmets, stickers for foot wears, facia panels for home appliances, electronics goods, weighing scales, instrumentation, medical electronics, et al. They have also diversified into membrane switches, graphic overlays. These are printed on special substrates such as polycarbonate, polyester, PVC, vinyl, metal, etc.

“Now we work for only branded companies and since our customers are satisfied with our quality we receive repeat orders. We supply our products all over India besides export of bat stickers

to UK, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa,” says Pankaj.

Interview: Reasons for buying only Grafica screen printing machines: We started gaining confidence in brand Grafica from the very beginning merely because of their fantastic machine (Nano-Print), backed by their prompt after sales service and technical guidance. Since then we never had to look for any other brands whenever we wanted to make new investment. When you use so many machines we also needed proper knowledge to get quality output. So, we had also attended DMI's workshop where we gained lot of knowledge to fine tune quality of our decals and to increase overall efficiency in productivity.

Impact of automation:Before buying Grafica's first screen printing machine in 2009, viz, Nano-Print, we had a large manual screen printing set up with 12 vacuum tables. With automation, vis-à-vis Grafica machines, our! Quality enhanced! Productivity improved! Less manpower requirement! Overall growth, based on the

above.! Volume increased! Customer base increased.

Benefits of attending DMI workshop:Great knowledge apart, DMI workshop inspired us to go for automation. During the practical sessions of the workshop, we could see the quality difference and realized the great benefits of automation. We have also implemented some of the techniques and tips that we learnt in DMI workshop, resulting in dramatic changes in our print quality. Tell us about importance of advanced Screen Making:After replacing all manual tables

with Grafica screen printing machines, we had already improved quality. However, there was still scope for improvement which required advanced screen making system. So, we bought Grafica's advanced screen making set up to make perfect screens.

Secret behind your success: Our continued success is due to the fact that we have a 'creative edge' in decal designing and printing. Our strategy to succeed in business is: ! Quality products with

competitive price.! Follow the mantra of 'Keep

Learning / Keep Improving'! Visit to national and

international expo to get new ideas and to see new technology.

! Attend workshops/seminars to update knowledge

! New technology adoption (machinery and materials).

! Take risk / experiment / R&D.! New product

development/innovation.! Explore/seize new opportunities

Many screen-printers, when they find bad printed texts or images in their production, have a tendency to think that they made some mistakes while printing.

They suppose it comes from the ink, or the squeegee, or the pressure, or the speed of printing, their machine or their own incompetence to achieve a good print when pulling the squeegee by hand.

And this, whatever can be the application of the kind of screen-printing they are doing in graphic, textile of industrial fields.

As matter of fact, you must never forget that « success in screen-printing is a whole where each of the needed operations has their role to play ».

You can be the best printer in the world with the best machine, if the screen you use is bad, you have no one chance to succeed !

And the screen can be bad for a lot of reasons, wrong choice of fabric, meshes opening or thread diameter, tension, ghost images on the fabric, unsuitable stenciling (bad source of light, wrong exposure time, quality of emulsion and its coating, vacuum frame damaged, insufficient depression for a good contact, wrong washing of the image, poor drying of the screen, etc.).

It can begin « before » the screen-making: bad film opacity, lack of resolution, lack of edge definition…It can begin « before » the film making, on your computer : wrong files, insufficient number of dpi, lack of chromatic correction in process printing, design errors,

poor image quality, problems with the fonts, etc.

Even the environmental problems can cause troubles : too warm air, too humid… or too dry.

This means that you must have a very good control of the quality of your whole workflow, and this begins with:

Quality Control of Prepress – Films & Screens

Creation of the digital basic files

In the current technology, the screen-printing prepress is now mostly digital. Despite of this, in numerous countries and in numerous small companies, the making of the films we need to obtain good screens remains often still « analogue », and even “hand made”.

For the screen printers working this way, the end user or his local correspondent or agency often supplies films. Their problem begins so farther. (Cf. doing the films) In digital, files are most often created by the customer, his studio or his agency or even by the printer if he is equipped, the digital file is the base of the supplied image, texts, artwork, etc.

What characteristics should present the films or these files according to the various possible applications?! line artwork (resolution -

definition)! four colour process! indexed colours! additive special effects

Line Screen Printing

Tools for control:Good magnifiers 10 times, or more (50 and 100 times), the computer with its monitor and the needed software.

The original can be a hand drawing, in one or several colours, and can be scanned with a good flat scanner or a digital camera with high resolution. Drawing in China ink, the inactinic films cut manually or digitally, or

even films directly generated (take care of the quality) through digital ink jet printing on thin special polyester films.

The scanned file being mostly produced in PDF, Photoshop – TIFF - I advise to convert it in Illustrator vectorised, either directly imported under Illustrator, to have a better quality of curves (in Bezier).

Naturally, one can also create directly in digital under Photoshop, Illustrator, CorelDraw, InDesign. If for some reason, the line drawing is not vectorised, take good care of the resolution under Photoshop : control the quality of curves on the film magnifying 10 times of more, or also on the screen of the monitor in wide enlargement strong swelling if you can reach the basic file : no « stairs ». I advise a resolution of 1.200 dpi or even 2,400 dpi, in TIFF or EPS of course.

Also, control the “blackening” on the file: he should be 100 % of black (in levels of grey), and 100 % also in CMY, besides the black, in CMYK. Take good care also of the quality of white in the background (0 % in each basic colours CMYK).

If there are two juxtaposed colours (or more) and if you judge that you need a slight overlapping of a film on another one – for register safety - make it only between 0,1 and 1 point maximum.

The begins… before you print!quality of your print Michel Caza, FrancePast President. FESPA,Ex-Chairman ASPT Recipient of Howard Parmele Award from SGIA, USA.

Shiv Tex Prints trusts GraficaTex rather than imported DTG screen printing machines

Dharmender Beniwal, proprietor of Faridabad based Shiv Tex Prints says he has full trust in the 'Made in India' GraficaTex rather than any imported DTG screen printing machine.

Interview:

Why did you choose Grafica? While searching on the internet for an automatic machine, I found a couple of leading brands appearing on the front page including one 'Indian company Grafica'. After thorough evaluation of their machine on technical grounds, I also sought market feedback which was in their favour. I feel proud that Grafica makes such a fantastic textile screen printing machine which was not available in India earlier. GraficaTex is a good machine with better price. Having chosen an Indian machine, it greatly benefits me in terms of easy availability of spare parts and after sales service.

Your experience so far:From my experience, I can say that there is nothing lacking in GraficaTex with regard to its performance, speed, and print quality. Moreover, Grafica renders excellent after sales service and technical guidance which is an added advantage. Investing in Grafica's machine was a wise decision. So far I have excellent rapport with Grafica. I never had any service issues and their

machine requires less maintenance. What more I can expect? I am fully satisfied with Grafica.

About Shiv Tex PrintsShiv Tex Prints undertakes direct to garment screen printing on job work basis. Besides CMYK and spot colors, they also offer value addition such as high density, glitter, flock, foil printing on garments. They also undertake full

fabric (uncut) printing on manual tables. The company's production facility is spread over 6000 q. ft area which houses GraficaTex, complete screen making set up and manual screen printing tables. Put together, the company has a capacity to print more than 4000 pieces per day. The company mainly caters to customers engaged in garment export in Noida and Gurgaon (NCR Region).

“I should have bought Grafica's automatic DTG screen printing machine much earlier” Manoj Kumar, Manoj Products

There is a growing trend of garment manufacturers setting up inhouse garment screen printing unit. The latest example is Ludhiana based Manor Products who have invested in Grafica's automatic DTG screen printing machine.

The company is a manufacturer of garments, mainly kids' wear – tops and bottom, under their brand 'AGM'. Apart from inhouse DTG screen printing unit, the company also has embroidery unit.

“Our export has crossed 20% mark and the balance is sold in the domestic market through a network of dealers,” says Manoj Kumar. He is partnered by his two

brothers, Avinash and Gulshan. Interview:

Why did you set up inhouse DTG screen printing unit?We used to outsource our printing requirement. We set up inhouse screen printing 4 years ago with manual carousal machines and manual tables. But to meet our production requirement we had to go for an automatic textile screen printing machine. Now with inhouse facility, our garments come with best quality prints. Moreover, there is a freedom to make variety of designs and samples.

On Grafica DTG screen printing machine:

We felt we made a late decision of buying their automatic machine; we should have bought it much earlier. Grafica fantastic machine has really benefited us a lot. It's an

easy to use machine for workmen. Apart from their quality machine, we are also satisfied with their prompt after sales service and technical guidance.

While watching the 10th IPL cricket series, currently underway (Final on 21st May 2017), you will notice stickers on all sides of the bats - front, back, and edges. These stickers are printed by screen printers such as Bahri Enterprises, Jalandhar.

“These days bats are adorned with 6-8 stickers (small and big) from all sides/edges. The stickers on the bats constantly attract our attention when we watch the matches on the television. The purpose of applying stickers is surely for branding. Because, brand gets highlighted every time a batsman carries the bat to the batting crease and stays there as long as he is not out,” says Ashwani Bahri, proprietor of the company.

Set up in 1980 by Ashwani Bahri, the company majorly prints and supplies stickers printed on numerous specialty substrates (other than paper) such as vinyl, metal, foil, PVC, polyester and polycarbonate. “Our major focus is

decals also varies to suit the price range of cricket bats,” says Ashwani Bahri.

To sustain their screen printing business and to explore its diverse application even within the commercial arena, Mysuru based Arihanth Graphics has recently invested in Grafica's complete screen printing machinery kit comprising Nano-Print plus, Nano-UV and Nano-Screen Maker 5-in-1. The company screen prints a wide variety of jobs, viz, wedding cards, invitation, bags, t-shirts, gift items, stationery, packaging, etc.

After running his printing business single handedly for over 15 years, Uttam Jain, proprietor of Arihanth Graphics inspired his three sons – Hitesh Kumar, Dhanesh Kumar and Vipul Kumar Sethiya – to step in. “I am proud to say that screen printing gave me name and wealth; else I would not have inspired all my three sons to take risk by

on decals for cricket bats and hockey sticks,” says Bahri. The company also supplies stickers for auto parts and hand tools industry.

According to him there is a growing demand for cricket bats due to the short duration IPL and other T20 matches world over. The popularity of cricket is growing far and wide.

The company had 8-10 manual screen printing tables housed in their 7000+ sq.ft production facility. To keep pace with the changing times, the company has taken the automation path by investing in Grafica Nano-Print plus and also Nano-Screen Maker 5-in-1.

“Now that there is demand for quality sports goods including cricket bats. Quality, designer decals make sports goods attractive. As the demand for quality sports goods is going up, so is the demand for quality stickers. E.g. Costly English Willow bats require high quality polycarbonate

stickers where as medium range bats require little less priced stickers. The price and quality of

joining my business,” says Uttam Jain. “I started my screen printing business from a 10 ft x 10 ft room. I acknowledge that we grew in business only because of screen printing.”

He concludes: “Based on Grafica's technical support and advanced knowledge, our design team is able to transform creativity into fantastic jobs by applying various UV special effects such as glitter, crystal UV, et al.”

“I attended DMI workshop on June 27-29, 2016. Taking back some useful tips on halftone printing, screen making and high density printing.” Vipul Sethiya,Arihant Graphics, Mysuru.

After a decade of success in value addition, Piyush Bhootwala, proprietor of Surat based Creative Graphics has now diversified into graphics & industrial screen printing. Few months ago, the company has invested in Grafica CamShell (30” x 40”), a semi automatic screen printing machine for wide format application.

Interview:

Why did you invest in Grafica CamShell (30” x 40”)?To offer high end graphics and industrial screen printing!

With Camshell, we undertake following screen printing jobs:! Stickers for fire extinguishers! Industrial stickers (Vinyl) upto

30” x 40”! Automobile decals! Advertising display boards on

rigid substrates such as Sunpack/sunboard

! Screen Printing on glass, acrylic, MDF, metal boards for indoor/outdoor placements, requiring precision halftone printing.

! Industrial Signage

We also plan to undertake dome labels, bicycle stickers, stickers for home appliances.

Why are you so loyal to Brand Grafica? I chose Grafica's Camshell purely on merit of quality of their machine and my past experience with their Cylinder Press. They offer prompt after sales service

backed by strong technical support. I received tremendous knowledge from Grafica and DMI when I needed the most, during the crucial take off stage of my business.

What is the secret of your success? We have 40-45% growth year on year (volume wise) and 30-35%, turnover wise. However, I run after excellence by acquiring knowledge and technology, and not money, as narrated in the movie: '3 Idiots'. And, I firmly believe that to excel in industrial screen printing you require knowledge, not just the high end technology.

Some of the key elements in my success are:! My own effort making! Customer satisfaction! Knowledge from Bhargav Mistry

and his team at DMI! All round support from Grafica, ! Visit to all major print expos to

see new technology and seek Knowledge/ideas

! Investment in new technologies.

Since establishment we have been buying print related machinery

almost every year. In 2006 I had vacuum screen printing table, thereafter I bought Mini Camshell and Exposing machine. In 2014 Fully Automatic cylinder press with inline UV, Lamination machine, foil stamping machine, UV coater, and in 2016 I bought Grafica Camshell – 30” x 40”. Believe me I have around 200 screen frames worth 10 lakh investment! Today we have capacity to roll out over 40,000 sheets per day with spot UV/special effects.

One Memorable job:We had executed a large value addition order of McDowell's Whisky packaging (for new product launch) which needed innovative use of glow in dark UV special effect (see photo above). The glow in dark printed by us glows when the packaging is handled/opened inside a dark/low light bar to bring cheers and fun to customers during the New Year 2017 celebrations.

What benefit did you derive from DMI? I have attended DMI workshops many times. I learnt important

lessons that to excel in screen printing we need to have strong knowledge in pre press and screen making. I learnt very minute details about advanced screen printing process from Bhargav Mistry.

Tell us about your interest in teaching:During the Screen Print India expo in Mumbai, I was introduced to KCES's Spark Institute of Multimedia and Printing Technology, Jalgaon (Maharashtra). Since then, as a guest lecturer I visit the institute thrice a month and conduct 1 ½ hour session. I cover various topics such as offset, screen, digital, textile, flexo, rotogravure, etc. Their final year students also undergo internship in our press. I also facilitate industrial visits to offset printers. I think industry has the duty to extend its support to academics in whatever possible way and I am doing my little contribution after taking inspiration from DMI's Bhargav Mistry who is rendering knowledge out of the way.
