Welcome to Grafica's stall at Screen Print India Expo'12This issue of our Grafica News is being released just before the Screen Print India Expo to be held on 5,6, 7 September 2012 in Mumbai. As one of the Lead Sponsors, on behalf of my team, I warmly welcome all technology and knowledge seeking printers to our stall at Screen Print India.

Meanwhile over to SGIA'12:We are gearing up to launch our nano-prinTex for the first time at SGIA to be held at Las Vegas, USA, on 18, 19, 20 October'12 (Booth #101).

Nano-prinTex creates curiosity in Kolkata and Tirupur market:Recently we had showcased our nano-prinTex at Garment Buyers'/Sellers' Meet in Kolkata, and KnitShow'12 in Tirupur. The response has been overwhelming

DMI update:The date for the next workshop on Direct-to-Garment Textile Screen Printing is being announced. I plan to demonstrate lot of new concepts at this workshop. Similarly, for Graphics, Industrial, Commercial, Digital & Offset Printers, we have also announced the date of workshop on advanced screen printing. Check details at www.graficaindia.com

Hands on Training:This 2-day training is exclusively for our customers, aimed at giving impetus on skill development. There has been good response to this new initiative.

Wish you a great festival season ahead!

Monoranjan Mahato, proprietor of Rony Print, is one of the loyal customers who consistently came back to Grafica whenever he wanted to buy a new machine! This is a testimony to Grafica's growing brand loyalty!

According to one school of thought, “brand loyalty” necessarily means customer's willingness to repeated buying of a product or service.

Amazing though, during the last 5 years, Rony Print has invested in as many as 7 Grafica's screen printing machines to meet the growing demand for fine quality heat transfers. These include: Grafica's 5 mini CamShell, one each of Nano-Print plus and Nano-Print, besides his recent buy of nano-screen maker 5-in-1.

“With complete advanced screen printing system from Grafica, we are able to produce fine quality heat transfers. As a result, these days we frequently receive enquiries from prospective customers as the news about my huge modern screen printing set up has spread in the market,” reveals Monoranjan Mahato.

Brand loyalty:During an interview, Monoranjan Mahato has revealed that his brand loyalty towards Grafica was purely on merit of Grafica's market reputation, quality, suitability and

performance of their machines backed by dependable after sales service and technical support. “That's why I never think of any other brands except Grafica. In future, if a need arises I will buy more machines from Grafica. I even recommend Grafica's machines to my industry friends,” vows Monoranjan.

“Let me divulge that initially we had other alternatives of going for costly MNC machines or cheaper Chinese machines. But we were neither lured by the 'imported' tag nor fell prey to cheaper machines and then repent,” he asserts.

“I believe in sourcing machines from single reliable supplier who has a good market reputation, strong manufacturing and knowledge base. Over the years, we have established good rapport with team Grafica like a well knitted fabric.

Monoranjan Mahato was born in a simple agricultural family at

Bankura district in north- West Bengal, his entry into textile printing was quite unexpected. As a school drop-out, at the age of 16 he migrated to Kolkata with no money in his pocket but only a fire in his belly. At behest of his close relatives, he started a small textile screen printing business, and since then there was no turning back.

He says that his hard work (Mehanat) has finally paid him rich dividend in the form of 'success.'

With two cylinder presses with inline UVs, Gautam Paper Udhyog, an ISO 9001:2008 certified company, has really taken a giant leap towards value addition in packaging.

“We had already earned good reputation as a quality saree box manufacturers but our investment in first cylinder press has enabled us to raise the quality bar further up,” says Jitendra Modi, CEO and Managing Director of Gautam Paper Udhyog.

Their modern 36000 sq ft factory is located in Surat. From design to dispatch, the company has a complete inhouse set up. Its modern screen printing set up complements their offset operations, armed with 4-colour, 2-colour and single colour offset presses and complete post press facilities.

In an interview, Gautam Modi, Director, Gautam Paper Udhyog, reveals why his company has made

big ticket investment in screen printing technology:

Why did your company invest in one more Cylinder Press? To increase our capacity and maintain our timely delivery schedules. With this new investment, our production will be doubled and anticipated production is 60000+ sheets per day.

Why did you choose brand Grafica again?Grafica's quality of machine, their after sale service coupled with technical support is unmatched. We didn't even take quotation from any other suppliers. They deliver what they promise. Grafica team is a highly professional with receptive and cooperative people around. In the past, we deputed our staff to DMI's workshop. With DMI's knowledge we have gained a lot, technically.

With two consecutive investments in Grafica's

Cylinder Press, do you consider yourself successful?Yes. We achieved tremendous success after investing in first Cylinder Press. That is why we have recently invested in yet another Cylinder Press with inline UV from Grafica. Achieving consistent quality and higher production is possible in fully automatic system. Cylinder press is the only option. Since the deployment of Grafica's first cylinder press in 2010, with inline UV and complete screen making set up, our product quality has improved remarkably. Orders started pouring in. Also, we had won 1st Prize at Screen Print India Awards Competition-2010; we were nominated for Printing Company of the Year Award at PrintWeek India 2011 competition; this year again, we were nominated under the same category of PrintWeek India 2012 Awards competition. This only proves the power of advanced screen printing technology and our innovative capabilities.

About Graffiti Signgraphics Pvt Ltd:Graffiti Signgraphics is a comprehensive identity creation and visual communications solution provider with a pan-India presence. They offer total print solution right from concept/design to print and execution/ onsite erection services. They cater to Telecom, Entertainment, Advertising, FMCG, Banks and financial institutions, MNCs, Infrastructure giants, Oil companies, MNCs, Retail chains, etc. Their product portfolio include: a wide spectrum of signages, packaging and custom print solutions. Their 2 production facilities in Kolkata are spread over 50,000 sq.ft area. Out of this, about 10,000 sq.ft area is allotted for screen printing set up, with a scope for further future expansion. Their new plant houses a huge fabrication shop, UV flat bed digital print press, CNC and laser cutting machines.

Kolkata

Kolkata based Graffiti Signgraphics Pvt Ltd, an ISO: 9001:2008 certified company, owning 3 wide format digital presses, has recently invested in Grafica's 30” x 40” Cam Shell with inline UV, complete screen making set up, and a squeegee sharpener. The company is one of the first digital companies in Kolkata region to have such a big screen printing set up for graphics printing with capabilities to print on wide range of rigid substrates, namely, acrylic, sunpack, sunboard, ACP, MDF, glass, leather, widely used in graphics printing for advertising and promotional activities.

“Our endeavor is to capitalise on the 'first mover advantage,” asserts Sauvik Chakravarty, one of the Directors of Graffiti Signgraphics, the other being his elder brother Saugata Chakraborty.

Interview: As a digital print solution provider, why did you invest in screen printing technology? There is a paradigm shift; customers expect us to deliver graphic jobs with long-lasting durability, to be printed on numerous semi rigid and rigid substrates. Our exposure to global printing market and subsequent research has revealed that screen printed graphics jobs have excellent durability.

Most of the quality graphics in many countries are produced by screen printing process. We feel digital prints are not as durable as we wanted it to be; the inks are not meant for long term application and outdoor durability. I feel screen printing technology is making its come back in India for graphic applications and POP/POS production.

So to keep pace with the global trend, meet customers' expectations, and to move into the next level of our graphics printing business, we had no other option but to adopt screen printing technology quickly.

We wanted to en-cash on the big opportunity that is currently open in graphics screen printing.

Why did you prefer brand Grafica?Although there were other similar options, we preferred brand Grafica mainly because we wanted to source the entire screen printing set up from a reliable manufacturer who has strong knowledge base; who can back us up with technical support, training and awareness on continued basis. Recently a DMI faculty was here whole day to train our staff on various process parameters.

By “artwork,” we mean any imaged media placed between a light source and photo-stencil film or emulsion during exposure. Most

photographic stencils are contact exposed in a vacuum frame, so the dimensions of the artwork are the same as those of the stencil and the final print. Image setter-exposed silver film (right-reading

1photographic positives ), laser toner (usually on vellum), inkjet on inkjet film, thermal images, and knifecut masking film (Ulano Rubylith® brand)—all are commercial media used for contact

2exposure .

The essence of screen printing is a stencil that blocks the flow of ink to non-image areas of the print and is “open” in image areas, allowing ink to flow freely through the fabric. The integrity of the stencil material and the uncompromised openness of the image areas are equally essential. In addition, there should be a clear demarcation between image and non-image areas. These attributes originate with the artwork.

Photo stencils can never be better than the artwork used to generate them, nor can the final print be better than the stencil. If the “dark” areas of the artwork

3lack sufficient density to block light during exposure, or if they contain pinholes or 'thin spots,” stencil material will harden in what should be the open, image areas of the stencil, and ink will not flow readily through the image areas of the stencil during printing. Similarly, if “clear” areas of the artwork are, at best, translucent rather than transparent, or contain

“artifacts” such as dirt or dust, light energy will be filtered or blocked before it reaches the stencil material; non-image areas of the

stencil won't be fully “cured” or cross-linked and may break down during the printing run. Finally, if the delineation of image and non-

1 Any text or other information should be on the emulsion side of the positive and appear as you will want it to look on the final print; the emulsion side of the positive is placed against the stencil material during exposure.

2 Projection exposure requires silver film positives that are considerably smaller than the final size of the print. Such positives must be of very good quality, as projection by its nature enlarges imperfections. “Computer-to-screen” systems don't use “artwork” as we've defined it here. These systems either apply an image in inkjet wax directly to the stencil material (“inkjet CTS”) or utilize Texas Instruments' digital light processing (DLP®) system to expose a screen “pixel by pixel” (“digital direct exposure”).

3 The “dark” and “clear” areas of artwork can be measured on a densitometer. The opacity of the dark areas is referred to as D-max (maximum density) followed by the numeric densitometer reading. D-min refers to the minimum density—which is a measure of the clarity of the artwork. D-max 4.0 is ideal for stencil making, as it allows full exposure of non-image areas even if the artwork medium is cloudy or fogged.

image areas is pixilated, fuzzy, or lacking in acutance (edge sharpness or “definition”), so will the image edges on the final print.

Advance Screen Printing is a process which needs constant knowledge upgradation on the part of screen printers since it involves certain specific standard procedures in order to achieve desired print results. The parameters used in entire screen printing process, right from pre press (positive output) to screen making to printing and print finishing differ job to job, application to application, substrate to substrate (industrial, commercial, graphics, labels and stickers, textile, etc).

Since there is not a single educational institute in India to impart a specific course or training on advanced screen printing, DMI, an educational initiative of Grafica, has single handedly taken up the challenge of empowering screen

FEEDBACK

printers with advanced techniques.

Since 2006, DMI has been conducting regular 3-day workshops involving theory and practicals on advanced screen printing machines. But off late Grafica found that its huge customer base needs job-specific training in order to make full use of advanced screen printing technology. In view of this DMI has embarked on a major Hands-on training series (two days) involving only practical sessions for Grafica's customers. Compared to its regular workshops which is usually attended by 40-50, only 10 participants from 5 companies are accommodated in the Hands on training.

DMI's Director Bhargav Mistry,

along with DMI faculties, oversees the training session and participants get an opportunity to interact with him on one-to-one basis to get many practical tips and solve their on the job problems in specific areas – be it screen making (fabric stretching, emulsion coating, screen exposing, screen reclaiming), printing and print finishing.

Since June'12 three batches have already been conducted with around 15 printing firms taking benefit of the training.

The participants felt that such training is the need of the hour to keep pace with the changing screen printing technology and its wide applications. The next session will be announced soon.Log on to: www.graficaindia.com

Truth-be-known the most common causes of moiré patterning in a screen-printed image have NOTHING to do with the angles! Place two AM films, gradients, screen-tints or halftones one atop the other on a light table. Now shift the top one vertically, then horizontally, then diagonally and then rotate radially and notice the patterns. As the angle between the two increases the simple, polygonal-patterns will become

smaller but always the highlights and shadows remain negative images of each other—this is radial moire…one of the 17-types of screen-printed moire. However the patterns we just illuminated don't look much like the ones we so often dread on press. To help you sort through the explicit confusion in the mesh weavers tables the six most viral patterns are listed below from most to least commonplace.

1) Acutance – makes a “fingerprint” pattern, small, repetitive, apparently random shapes which may appear all through the chromatic scale, most common in transitions [¼, ½ and ¾-tones] and geographically regional. The cause is a high aspect ratio dot or spot shape. Round dots have a 1:1 x:y aspect-ratio[preferred to eliminate this type], elliptical has a higher x:yand diamond dots have the highest x:y therebymost likely to cause acutance moiré.

2) Progressive – the pattern is

wavy but larger than Acutance and most conspicuous in primary and secondary colors, it occurs anywhere in the tonal range and usually large regional areas on the screen. The cause is non-periodic mesh openings due to; low-cost [imbalanced] fabric, meter reliant tensioning and any and all types of mesh-retensioningand/or excessive blade drag on press. To

minimize the event of Progressive moiré make our mesh selection based on warp & weft counts, tension by percentage of elongation to balance the crimp-angles of the mesh and gauge tpi [thread per inch] count for equality in warp & weft, NEVER re-tension a halftone screen after a press run and finally calibrate the four planes of the press for zero blade buckling and zero pressure on the substrate.

3) Frequency – moiré patterns

are a series of parallel lines and spaces. Most apparent in single colors, most likely to occur at either end of the stroke and most noticeable in highlights and ¼-tones. Frequency moiré results if and when the warp & weft counts differ significantly and its appearance is directly proportional to the line count. Its causes are cheap [imbalanced] mesh, and/or metered tensioning wherein the final crimp-angles are imbalanced. Although re-tensioning causes Frequency its dubious practice is more likely to result in a Progressive pattern.

Successive moiré is prevalent with UV inks which are invariably dried between each color and exhibit poor wetting. The pattern is central to the screen with tall, thin dots due to high durometer, single-axis blades. Substrate moiré occurs from interference of the substrate and dot. It is exacerbated by high tack inks, poor upper and lower seals [blade to mesh & stencil to stock] and slow print-stroke speeds. Last but perhaps not least is Radial moiré wherein the precise and consistent angling of films or files on a precise and consistent mesh will eliminate the radial pattern [but ONLY radial].

The table below is not listed in order of occurrence; such conclusions are dependent on the specifics of the process, however it offers a starting point with which we can diagnose the pattern of moiré. Remember when we're rotating our films [or files] we are just as likely to be spinning our wheels!

Classic Labels follow DMI's standardisation to derive maximum benefit from NPL plus

Ludhiana

Tirunelveli

Small or big, it is high time that screen printers adopt advanced technology while at the same time follow standard practices to deliver quality prints and grow in business. This is the practical experience of Inder Pal Singh, proprietor of Ludhiana based Classic Labels, manufacturer of woven labels, garment hand tags, stickers and labels for shawls and dress materials.

After the installation of Grafica's Nano-Premier League plus (NPL plus) and attending 3-day workshop at DMI, his business has progressed tremendously. “That's because while adopting newer technology I also made sure to up-grade my knowledge, and this dual facility is only available with Grafica. So being their customer this is an added advantage.”

Disclosing one of the main reasons for switching over to automation Inder Pal says: “My son Harmeen was not keen to join my business because of labour intensive and tedious nature of manual screen printing. So, automation was the

only way to actively involve him in mybusiness. Now my son is also enthusiastic, especially after attending DMI's workshop along with me.”

I strongly believe that manual screen printers who want their next generation to take up their business will have to go for automation or else it will be difficult to sustain your family business.”

“Associating with Grafica is really learning experience. They are in constant touch with us via phone calls or through their regular eNews/printed newsletter,” he concludes.

Sankar V, proprietor of Tirunelveli based Bala Print Line finally breathed a sigh of relief from the burden of manual screen printing when Grafica's engineers completed installation of Grafica Nano-Premier League (NPL)and subsequent onsite training by DMI's faculty.

“I never felt ignored even if I am small printer from a far distance place with no exposure to advanced screen printing technology. They have provided satisfactory post installation training,” says Sankar who was desperately hunting for a low cost work horse which could shoulder the burden of his manual screen printing business.

Besides offering commercial printing service, Bala Print Line undertakes non-woven printing in

a big scale which is supplied to shops in Tirunelveli. They also offer spot UV service to offset printers in Sivakasi.

“Automation was the only way to survive in screen printing business. After investing in NPL, which

comprises Grafica's Nano-Print, Nano-UV, Nano-Screen Maker 5-in-1 and Nano-Sharpener, I have expanded my business. Grafica's NPL is the best for small printers like me. I am completely overwhelmed with the performance of NPL system.”

“Distance, language no bar, Grafica renders me full technical support”

“When I first visited DMI, it was like an educational tour to me because I received lot of ideas and in depth knowledge even before buying my dream machine NANO-PRINT. I was also excited to see a wide range of innovative screen printed samples at DMI.” “Although my family purely depends on my screen printing business, now with Grafica on my side, there is nothing to worry. NPL has opened up new avenues for me,” concludes Sankar.

Grafica's Nano Premier League Plus (NPL plus) powers Palette Screens, Payyanur to create an impact in north Kerala's advertising industry.

The company supplies sign and arch boards, outdoor advertising display boards screen printed on sunpac. They also undertake all types of graphics and commercial jobs.

Being a born fine artist, C. Jayan found the built of Nano-Print plus very artistic. “Nano-Print plus delivers very sharp prints. We are now capable of executing large graphics printing jobs more efficiently, while maintaining quality and delivery commitment.” “NPL plus has surpassed all our expectations. It has superseded the laborious and non-profitable manual screen printing process which was part of our business for

several years,” asserts Jayan who has been engaged in designing and printing with special focus on advertising for the last 25 years.

Giving full marks to Grafica's technical support Jayan shares his experience in DMI's workshop. “We received excellent exposure to advanced screen printing. The

knowledge gathered in the workshop is very practical. We have replicated DMI by providing yellow light and clean room environment in the entire screen making department. As demonstrated at DMI, we use only yellow polyester fabric.”

In this age of cutting edge technology, wedding card making is going through transformation. It's no more a manual screen printing affair. To keep pace with this change, Delhi based Shilpa Agencies, has deployed Grafica's Nano-Premier League (NPL) to offer custom made wedding cards, special invites, and social stationery.

"We had few manual screen-printing tables earlier, but soon realised the need for automation,” says Rajat Khanna, an MBA with IT background. He is backed by his mentors – D.R. Khanna (his uncle), and Ashok Khanna, (father). Their show room is located at Chawri Bazar, Delhi's busiest wedding card market. They also have fabrication-cum-printing unit and a warehouse.

Set up in 1988, Shilpa Agencies is a manufacturer and whole sellers of wedding cards and envelopes. They commenced retailing business three years ago with special focus

on custom made wedding card design and printing.

“I was under the impression that screen printing is a low profile activity. But during my visit to Grafica's stall at a leading exhibition, I was excited to see the advancement in screen printing. I was also delighted to see a large collection of DMI's creative samples such as striking wedding cards and paper carry bags. So, I

thought NPL would be a good technology to transform all our ideas into attractive wedding cards with feel good factor,” says Rajat.

“Grafica team was transparent in clearing all our doubts during our first meeting itself. This gave us confidence to buy their machine. They are always available to guide us. The unique facet of Grafica is that they go extra mile whenever we need some technical guidance.”

Rajat's DMI experience:“It was a great morale booster since I had just entered our family's wedding card business. I would say DMI gave me new direction. DMI's concepts are clear and practical; tried and tested. Until I attended the workshop I did not know that screen printing machine could be used profitably for various other applications. The 3-day workshop changed my attitude towards screen printing. In wedding card printing, use of solvent ink is rampant but DMI inspired us to use UV ink which is good for faster and cleaner production.
