A.IntroductiontotheSociologyGraduateProgramThegraduateprograminSociologyatPurdueUniversityisdesignedtopreparestudentstobecomewellroundedresearchers,scholarsandteachers.Theprogramoffersstudentsawellbalancedtheoryandmethodscorecurriculumandanindividualizedplanofstudydesignedtotrainstudents
toconductsociologicalresearchattheforefrontofthefield.Wealsoofferanumberofopportunitiesforgraduatestudentstobecomefirstrateclassroominstructors.Inadditiontothecorecurriculum,ourprogramoffersconcentratedtraininginsixfieldsofsociologicalspecialization:FamilyandGender;Health,Aging,andtheLifeCourse;LawandSociety;SociologyofReligion;SocialInequality;andSocialMovementsandPoliticalSociology.Thefirsttwoyearsoftheprogram,leadingtoanMSdegree,focusonthecorecurriculumandonefieldofresearchspecialization,andculminateineachstudentproducinganoriginalresearchproduct,theanalyticproject.FurtherstudytowardthePhDexposesstudentstootherareasofspecializationandemphasizesthedevelopmentofgreaterdepthofknowledgewithintheareathatwillbethesubjectofastudentsmajorresearchproduct,thedissertation.Studentsareencouraged
topublishandtoteachastheyworktowardthedoctorate.Asmallstudentfacultyratioprovidesgraduatestudentswiththeopportunitytoworkcloselywithfacultymembersintheirresearch,teaching,andpublicationactivities.Thedepartmentsponsorstraveltoprofessionalmeetingsandacolloquiumseriesfeaturingoutstandingsociologists.TheGraduateCommitteeorganizesinformalprofessionalseminarsandmeetingstoassiststudentsindevelopingtheirplansforconductingresearchandteaching.Thedepartmentmaintainsuptodatecomputerhardwareandsoftwaretoassisttheresearchprocess.MoststudentsinthePhDprogramteachtheirownclasses.PreparationforteachingisprovidedinpartthroughassistingfacultyintheclassroomduringtheMSprogramandtakingSOC610SeminaronTeachingSociologyduringtheirsecondyearintheMSprogram.Inaddition,studentsareencouragedtotakeadvantageofgraduateteachingcertificatesofferedthroughPurduesCenterforInstructionalExcellence.
B.AdmissionRequirementsPurdueUniversityseeksgraduatestudentswithdiverseintellectualperspectivesandexperiences,andacceptsstudentswithoutregardtoage,race,gender,ethnicity,creed,nationalorigin,disabilities,orsexualpreference.ThefacultymembersoftheGraduateCommittee,selectedtorepresentthedepartmentsfacultyandinterests,makeadmissionandfunding(financialaward)recommendationstoPurduesGraduateSchool.TheGraduateCommitteeevaluateseachapplicantintermsofpotential
forsuccessasagraduatestudentinthisparticulardepartmentandpotentialforsuccessfulprofessionalworkinthefieldofSociology.
1.GeneralRequirementsThereisageneralwrittenEnglishproficiencyrequirementforalldegreeseekinggraduatestudentsinSociology.IncomingstudentsareexpectedtofulfilltheEnglishproficiencyrequirementbeforebeginningtheirgraduatestudiesatPurdue.StudentswhosenativelanguageisEnglishsatisfytherequirement(a)byearningagradeofBorbetterinanundergraduateEnglishComposition

course(oritsequivalent)priortograduateadmissionor(b)scoring600ontheoldGREscale,or160asperthenew(2011andafter)GREscorescale,orhigherontheverbalsectionoftheGRE.StudentswhosenativelanguageisnotEnglishsatisfythewrittenEnglishproficiencyrequirementifthey(a)havecompletedanEnglishproficiencytestwithvalidscoresor(b)600,or160asperthenew(2011andafter)GREscorescale,orhigherontheverbalsectionoftheGRE.TheSociologydepartmentrequiresvalidEnglishproficiencytestscoresfromallinternationalapplicantsapplyingtothe
graduateprogram.ThedepartmentwillNOTwaivethisrequirementevenforapplicantswhohavereceivedabaccalaureate,graduate,orprofessionaldegreefromaU.S.institutionwithinthepast24months&inadditionthedepartmentMAYrequirethoseadmittedtotakePurduesOEPPtest.StudentsadmittedtotheMSprogrammusthavecompletedaBAorBSdegree.Itisstronglyrecommendedthatapplicantshavesuccessfullycompletedasociologicaltheorycourse,asocialstatisticscourseandaresearchmethodscourse.StudentsadmitteddirectlytothePhDprogrammusthavecompletedanMAorMSinSociology.Studentswithadvanceddegreesinrelatedfields(e.g.,familystudies,law,gerontology,socialwork,theology,orappliedSociology)maybeadmittedtotheMSprogram,butnotthePhDprogram.
StudentsmaybegintheMSorPhDprogramonlyduringthefallsemester.Inadditiontotheelectronicapplicationanda$60fee,fouradditionaltypesofinformationarerequiredforanapplicationfile:Grades:Twocopiesoftranscriptsforallpreviousundergraduateandgraduateworkarerequired.Aminimum3.0(B)undergraduatecumulativeGPAisrequiredforadmission.
AptitudeTestScores:GraduateRecordExamination(GRE)scoresarerequiredforallapplicants.TheTestofEnglishasaForeignLanguage(TOEFL)examisrequiredforinternationalnonnativespeakersofEnglishwithaminimumacceptablescoreof27onthespeakingsectionoftheexam.StudentsmayalsotaketheInternationalEnglishLanguageTestingSystem(IELTS)andarerequiredtoscoreaminimumof8onthisexam.Letters:Threelettersofrecommendationarerequired.Thelettersshouldbefrompersonswhocanassessyouracademicpotentialsuchasacollegeoruniversityprofessor.Pleasedonotincludelettersfromemployers,academiccounselors,orindividualsinthecommunity.PersonalStatement:Abriefstatementofscholarlyinterestsisrequired.Yourstatement,approximately300500wordslong,shouldindicateyourpurposeforundertakinggraduatestudyandprofessionalworkinSociology.Thestatementshouldalsoidentifythearea(s)ofconcentrationorspecializationthatattractyoutotheSociologyprogramatPurdue.WritingSample.Apaperormanuscriptlengthwritingsampleshouldbeincluded.Donotsubmitfullthesesordissertations.Thewritingsampleshouldbethestudentsownwork,notwritingthathasbeenpreparedincollaborationwithmentorsorcolleagues.

PurdueUniversityrequiresthatanystudentwhosefirstlanguageisnotEnglishdemonstrateadequateoralEnglishproficiencybeforebeingassigneddutiesinvolvingdirectinstructionofstudents.ThisisdonebytakingPurdueUniversitysOralEnglishProficiencyProgram(OEPP)SpeakingTest.InternationalstudentsofferedteachingassistantshipsatPurdueareexpectedtopass

D.FinancialSupportandDepartmentalAwards
1.FinancialSupportTheSociologyprogramoffersfinancialsupportintheformofateachingassistantship(TA),a
researchassistantship(RA),orafellowshiponacompetitivebasistoqualifiedstudents.Financialsupportincludesamonthlystipend,withamountsdeterminedbytheCollegeofLiberalArtsortheGraduateSchool,andawaiveroftuition.Applicantstothegraduateprogramareautomaticallyconsideredfordepartmentalfunding.Noseparateapplicationoradditionalinformationisrequired.StudentsenteringtheMSprogramwithanofferoffundingaregenerallyguaranteedfundingforfiveyears:twoyearstocompletetheMSdegree,twoyearstocompletecourseworkandpreparationforthePhDpreliminaryexamination,andafifthyearoffundingtocompletethePhDdissertation.StudentsenteringthePhDprogramaregenerallyguaranteedfundingforthreeyears:twoyearsoffundingtocompletePhDcourseworkandpreparationforthePhDpreliminaryexamination,andathirdyearoffundingtocompletethePhDdissertation.
Fundingguaranteesareconditional:studentsmustremainingoodacademicstandingandmustmakesatisfactoryprogresstowardsdegreeobjectives(includingmaintainingacumulativeGPAof3.0orgreater)eachyearinordertoretainfunding.Studentsprogresstowarddegreegoalsischeckedattheendofthefallsemester,andafullreviewofallaspectsofstudentsacademicprogressstudentsisconductedannuallybytheGraduateCommitteeneartheendofthespringsemester.StudentsmakingunsatisfactoryprogresswillbenotifiedinwritingbytheGraduateCommitteeattheendofthefallandspringsemesters.AnystudentwhoseGPAfallsbelow3.0attheendofthefall
semesterisnotmakingsatisfactoryprogressandwillbenotifiedthatsheorhehasbeenplacedonprobation;thestudentmustraisehisorhercumulativeGPAto3.0orhigherbytheendofthespringtermtoremainintheprogram.Further,receivingagradeofFinanycoursewillresultinterminationoffundingforthefollowingsemester.SeesectionE7EvaluationofMSWork,sectionF14ASummaryofthePhDProgramandsectionIUnsatisfactoryProgressformoreinformation.

beassignedtoteachtheirowncourse.StudentsmustsuccessfullydefendtheAnalyticProjectpriortoservingasaninstructorofrecord(i.e.,teachingtheirowncourses).StudentsarealsorequiredtocompleteSOC610SeminaronTeachingSociologybeforeservingasaninstructorofrecord.TheSOC610requirementmaybewaivedbytheGraduateCommitteewhenastudenthastaughtastheinstructorofrecordatthecollegeoruniversitylevel.Studentsteachingtheirowncoursearerequiredbythedepartmenttoparticipateeachsemester(includingsummer)inPICES(PurdueInstructorCourseEvaluationService)teachingevaluationsadministeredbyPurduesCenterforInstructionalExcellence.
3.DepartmentalAwards
AnannualcontestisheldwithinthedepartmentfortheOutstandingGraduateStudentPaper,andallstudentswhoteachtheirowncoursesmaybenominatedfortheOutstandingGraduateTeacherAward.Winnersareawarded$100.00prizesbythedepartment.ThesubmissiondatefortheOutstandingGraduateStudentPaperisannouncedinthespring.TheGraduateCommitteereviewsallthesubmittedpapersanddeterminesthewinner.PaperssubmittedshouldbepreparedaccordingtotheASRStyleGuide.Althoughthereisnopreferenceforanyparticulartheory,topic,orresearchmethod,theGraduateCommitteeexpectsthesubmittedpaperstoberevised,finaldrafts,moresuitableforsubmissiontoaprofessionaljournalthanacourseorseminar.Pleasenotethatnamesshouldnotbeincludedanywhereonthepaperssubmittedforconsideration.
ThedepartmentsTeachingCommitteesolicitsnominationsfortheOutstandingGraduateTeacherAward.Generallytheawardismadetoamoreadvancedstudentwhohasindependentlytaughtoneormorecoursesinthedepartment.TheGraduateCommitteealsoadministerstheWalterHirshGraduateStudentDissertationAward.WalterHirschwasafacultymemberinSociologyatPurdueUniversityfrom1947untilhisretirementin1989.Theawardprovidesupto$1000.00tohelpwiththecostofdissertationresearch.AnyPhDcandidateinSociologyiseligibletoapply.

bytheendofthefirstyearofthegraduateprogram.ThemajorprofessormustbeamemberoftheSociologyDepartment.StudentsrequestapprovaloftheirmajorprofessoronadepartmentformthatissignedbytheDirectorofGraduateStudies.AnMSadvisorycommitteemustincludeatleasttwofacultymembersinadditiontothemajorprofessor.Professorsfromoutsidethedepartmentwhoarequalifiedandwillingtoassiststudentsingraduatestudymayserveontheadvisorycommittee.RetiredfacultymembersandfacultymembersfromotheruniversitiesmaybeonthecommitteeifcertifiedbytheGraduateSchoolandiftheydonotmakeupamajorityofthemembers.TheGraduateSchoolapprovestheadvisorycommitteelistedontheMSplanofstudy.TheMajorProfessorAppointmentRequestformshouldbesignedbythestudentandthemajorprofessorandreturnedtoGraduateSecretaryfortheDirectorssignature.
3.TheMSPlanofStudyThemajorprofessor,theadvisorycommittee,andthegraduatestudentjointlydevelopandsubmitaplanofstudy(POS)fortheMSdegreetotheGraduateSchool.Aplanofstudyincludesaprimaryresearcharea,thespecificcoursesthestudentwillcompletetosatisfydegreerequirements,andexpecteddateofdegreecompletion.AnapprovedPOSconstitutesformaladmissiontocandidacyfortheMSdegree.StudentsmustsubmitthePOStotheGraduateSchoolforapprovalduringtheirthirdsemesterintheprogram.FailuretosubmitacompletePOSbeforetheendofthethirdsemesterintheMSprogrammayprecludegraduationinthefourthsemester.Thus,itisstrongly

Theexpectationisthattheanalyticprojectbecomparableinqualitytoamanuscriptpreparedforsubmissiontoanacademicjournalforpublication.Inadditiontopublishingtheirwork,studentsarestronglyencouragedtopresenttheirresearchatscholarlyconferences.Eachstudentselectsamajorprofessorbytheendofthefirstyearinresidence.Theanalyticprojectiscompletedoveratwosemesterperiodduringthesecondyearinresidence.Secondyearstudentsenrollin3credithoursofSOC695,theanalyticprojectcourse,forthefallsemester.Thestudentcompletesaproposalfortheresearchprojectbytheendofthethirdsemester.Themajorprofessor,thestudent,andthestudentsadvisorycommitteemeetforanoraldefenseoftheproposalbytheendofthatsemester.Theadvisorycommitteesignsadepartmentalformshowingthatthecommitteemetanddiscussedtheprojectwiththestudent.Iftheprojectisnotapprovedbythestudentsadvisorycommitteeatthefirstmeeting,aseconddateforanoraldefensemustbeset.Allanalyticprojectproposalsorabstractsmustbeapprovedinthismanner.Themajorprofessorgradesthe3creditSOC695analyticprojectproposal.OnlygradesofAorBareacceptable.
