CalStateLAhasalmost3,140graduatestudentsenrolledacrosssixacademiccollegesoffering54master’sdegreeprogramsandthreedoctoralprogramsinawiderangeofdisciplines.

OFFICE OF GRADUATE STUDIES

Overview

AsaunitoftheDivisionofAcademicAffairs,theOfficeofGraduateStudiesprovidesleadershipandservicetopromotegraduatestudiesandtoprovideresearchdevelopmentsupportservicestotheuniversitycommunity.Specialattentionisgiventointerdisciplinaryeffortsthatcancontributetoleadershipinachangingworld.

TheOfficeofGraduateStudiesoffersfundingopportunities,hostsNewGraduateStudentOrientation,overseesthethesisanddissertationsubmissionprocess,andishometotheGraduateResourceCenter.

TheOfficeofGraduateStudiesislocatedintheGraduateResourceCenter,inthenorthwingoftheJFKMemorialLibrary(LIBNA124).

FundingOpportunities

TheOfficeofGraduateStudiesoverseesand/orassistsstudentswithseveralStudentSupportPrograms:

GraduateEquityFellowshipProgram

Thesegrantsaredesignedtoincreasethenumberofmaster’sdegreesawardedtoeconomicallydisadvantagedCSUstudents,especiallythosegraduatestudentsthatareunderrepresentedamonggraduatedegreerecipientsintheirdisciplineandtothosewhoaredisabled.

InternationalGraduateStudentTuitionWaiverProgram

Alimitednumberofnon-residenttuitionfeewaiversortuitionfeereductionsmaybegrantedtonon-residentgraduatestudentswhoareeitherdomesticnon-residentstudentsorcitizensofaforeigncountry.

TravelSupportforConferencesandProfessionalDevelopment

TheTravelSupportforStudentPresentations(TSSP)isareimbursementprogramdesignedtoencourageandassistCalStateLAgraduatestudentswhoseworkhasbeenacceptedintoaprofessional/academicconference.TheTravelSupportforProfessionalDevelopmentofGraduateStudents(TSPD)isareimbursementprogramdesignedtoencourageandassistCalStateLAgraduatestudentstoparticipateinprofessionaldevelopmentactivitiesthatwillfostertheireducationalandcareergoals.

CulminatingProjectFundtoSupportCompletionofThesis,CreativeActivity,orDissertationProgram

ThisfundisareimbursementprogramdesignedtosupportCalStateLAgraduatestudentresearchand/orscholarshipconductedtowardscompletingathesis,creativeactivity,ordissertation.Studentsfundedthroughthisawardwillreceivereimbursementforapprovedsupplies,equipment,andservices.

CaliforniaPre-DoctoralScholarsProgram(“SallyCasanovaScholars”)

TheCaliforniaPre-DoctoralprogramisdesignedtoincreasediversitywithinthepoolofuniversityfacultybysupportingthedoctoralaspirationsofstudentsintheCSU.

Chancellor'sDoctoralIncentiveProgram(CDIP)

TheCaliforniaStateUniversity(CSU)Chancellor'sDoctoralIncentiveProgram(CDIP)aimstoincreasethenumberofpromisingdoctoralstudentsapplyingforfutureCSUinstructionalfacultypositionsbyofferingfinancialassistanceintheformofaloanandmentorshipbyCSUfaculty.

NewGraduateStudentOrientation

NewGraduateStudentOrientationisachancefornewgraduateandpost-baccalaureatestudentstolearnaboutacademicpoliciesandprocedures,connectwithresourcesavailableoncampus,andnetworkwithpeers.HostedbytheOfficeofGraduateStudiesandGraduateResourceCenter,itisofferedinthefallandspring.

Thisorientationisnotmandatory,butstudentshavefounditextremelyhelpful.Itisintendedtocomplement,butnotreplaceorientationsessionsofferedbydepartments,colleges,ortheInternationalOffice.

Thesis,Project,andDissertationGuidelines

TheOfficeofGraduateStudiesprovidesthesubmissionguidelinesandsupportforgraduatestudentscompletingthethesis,project,ordissertation.CalStateLAnolongeracceptshardboundcopiesofculminatingprojects;electronicthesesanddissertations(ETD)aresubmitteddigitallyandareeventuallyavailabletoCalStateLAstudents,staff,andfacultyviatheLibrarywebsite.

Studentsareresponsibleforbeingawareofandmeetingalldeadlines,formattingrequirements,andpaperworkrequiredforthecompletionandsubmissionoftheirETD.ThisinformationmaybefoundontheThesis,Project,andDissertationGuidelineswebsite.

GraduateResourceCenter

TheGraduateResourceCenterprovidesacademicsupport,professionaldevelopment,andcommunity-buildingopportunitiesinaspacededicatedtograduatestudents.Westrivetoarmgraduatestudentswiththetoolsrequiredinthenextstepsoftheiracademicandprofessionaljourneys.

Weguidestudentsthroughwriting,editing,andformattingthethesisanddissertationandassistinpreparingtheirworkforpublication;hostworkshopsandpresentationstosupportstudents’academicandprofessionaldevelopment;andactasageneralresourceforgraduatestudentneeds.

ThesisandDissertationSupport

Studentswhocompleteaculminatingproject,suchasathesisordissertation,filetheirfinishedmanuscriptwiththeUniversityviaouroffice.Ourstaffassiststudentswiththeformatreview,andweprovideadditionalsupportintheformofworkshops.

GraduateWritingSupportProgram

TheGraduateWritingSupportProgramfacilitatesacademicandprofessionalgrowthbypromotingwritingskillsapplicabletomultiplegenresanddisciplines.Weprovideconstructivecriticismandsuggestionsforalternativeapproachesduringconsultationscenteredonhigher-orderwritingconcerns,suchasfocus,audience,organization,anddevelopment.Weaimtoassiststudentsinfurtherdevelopingtheirwritingskillsthroughacontinualevaluationoftheirbehaviorsandbeliefsaboutwriting.

GENERAL GRADUATE AND POSTBACCALAUREATE INFORMATION

Introduction

GraduatestudyhasbeenamajorpartoftheacademiccommitmentofCalStateLAsinceitsfounding.Studentswhoareengagedingraduateandpostbaccalaureatestudyconstituteapproximatelyonefifthofthetotalstudentbody.

CalStateLAoffersMasterofArtsandMasterofSciencedegreesinavarietyofmajors,withopportunitiesforspecializationthroughtheselectionofoptionsorareasofemphasiswithindegreeprograms.AlsoofferedaretheMasterofBiotec1hnologydegree,MasterofBusinessAdministrationdegree,MasterofFineArtsdegreeinArt,MasterofFineArtsdegreeinTelevision,FilmandTheatre,MasterofMusic,MasterofArtsandMasterofSciencedegreeswithanInterdisciplinaryStudiesmajor,MasterofSocialWork,DoctorateinEducation,DoctorofNursingPractice,andtheDoctorofPhilosophydegreeinSpecialEducation.Thecompletelistofgraduatedegreesofferedappearsatthefrontofthischapter.

ObjectivesofGraduateStudy

CalStateLA’sgraduateprogramsarecoherentpatternsofstudydesignedforalevelofacademicaccomplishmentsubstantiallybeyondthatrequiredforthebaccalaureate.Graduateprogramsenablestudentstoprogressintheirchosenvocation,toassumepositionsofleadership,andtocontributetotheadvancementoftheirprofession.Graduatestudyhelpsstudentstodevelopgreaterawarenessofthemselvesinrelationtootherpeopleandcultures,bothpresentandpast,andtogainabetterunderstandingoftheirparticularprofession.Completionofamaster’sdegreeprogramatCalStateLAalsopreparesstudentsforfurthergraduatestudyappropriatetotheirabilitiesandambitions.

Eachprogramthatoffersthecomprehensiveexaminationforthemaster’sdegreeshallimplementandmaintaininwritingexplicitguidelinesthataddressbothcontentandproceduresrelatingtotheexamination.AllcomprehensiveexaminationsmustconformtothefollowingrequirementofTitle5:”Acomprehensiveexaminationisanassessmentofthestudent’sabilitytointegratetheknowledgeofthearea,showcriticalandindependentthinking,anddemonstratemasteryofthesubjectmatter.Theresultsoftheexaminationprovideevidenceofindependentthinking,appropriateorganization,criticalanalysis,andaccuracyofdocumentation.ArecordoftheexaminationquestionsandresponsesshallbemaintainedinaccordancewiththerecordsretentionpolicyofTheCaliforniaStateUniversity.”

GeneralInformation

QuarterUnits/QuarterSystem

CalStateLAcreditsareexpressedinsemesterunits;onesemesterunitnormallyrepresentsnolessthanonehourofclassworkandtwoormorehoursofoutsidestudyperweekforonesemester.Onesemesterunitisequivalentto1.5quarterunits,andonequarterunitisequivalentto0.67semesterunits.

CampusIdentificationNumber(CIN)

CaliforniaStateUniversity,LosAngelesrandomlyassignsanine-digitCampusIdentificationNumber(CIN)toallstudentsintheUniversity.Thisnumberisusedasameansofidentifyingrecordsandofferingservicespertainingtostudents.Thestudents’SocialSecurityNumberwillcontinuetoberetainedforpurposesoffinancialaideligibilityandotherdebtspayabletotheinstitution.

Registration

ContinuingstudentsatCaliforniaStateUniversity,LosAngelesreceiveinformationregardingtheirregistrationappointmentdatesbyloggingintoGET(GoldenEagleTerritory).AdditionalinformationaboutregistrationproceduresisprovidedintheScheduleofClasses,availableonlineeachsemesterbeforetheregistrationperiod.Onlineregistration(GET)isavailabletoalleligiblecontinuingstudents.

Regulationsgoverningtherefundofmandatoryfees,includingnonresidenttuition,forstudentsenrollingattheCaliforniaStateUniversityareincludedinSection41802ofTitle5,CaliforniaCodeofRegulations.Forpurposesoftherefundpolicy,mandatoryfeesaredefinedasthosesystemwideandcampusfeesthatarerequiredtobepaidinordertoenrollinstate-supportedacademicprogramsattheCaliforniaStateUniversity.Refundsoffeesandtuitionchargesforself-support,specialsession,andextendedstudiesprogramsorcoursesattheCaliforniaStateUniversityaregovernedbyaseparatepolicyestablishedbytheUniversity,availablefromtheCollegeofProfessionalandGlobalEducation.

Inordertoreceiveafullrefundofmandatoryfees,lessanadministrativechargeestablishedbythecampus,includingnonresidenttuition,astudentmustcancelregistrationordropallcoursespriortothefirstdayofinstructionfortheterm.InformationonproceduresanddeadlinesforcancelingregistrationanddroppingclassesisavailableintheScheduleofClasses.

Forstate-supportedsemesters,quarters,andnon-standardtermsorcoursesoffour(4)weeksormore,astudentwhowithdrawsduringtheterminaccordancewiththeuniversity’sestablishedproceduresordropsallcoursespriortothecampus-designateddropperiodwillreceivearefundofmandatoryfees,includingnonresidenttuition,basedontheportionofthetermduringwhichthestudentwasenrolled.Nostudentwithdrawingafterthe60percentpointinthetermwillbeentitledtoarefundofanymandatoryfeesornonresidenttuition.

Disenrollment

StudentswhohaveatuitionandfeesobligationtotheUniversitywillbebilled.Paymentmustbemadebytheduedateprintedonthebillingstatement.Failuretopaybytheestablisheddeadlineiscausefordisenrollmentbecauseofincompletepaymentoftuitionandfees.Disenrollmentmeansthepermanentlossofcreditforclassestakenforthesemesterinvolved.Thereisnorefundofanyfeesalreadypaidforthesemesterinvolved.

Studentswhofailtocompleteallrequiredsubcollegiate(“remedial”)coursesduringtheirfirstyearatCalStateLAwillbedisenrolledfromtheUniversityincompliancewiththeCSUChancellor’sOfficeExecutiveOrder665.

FeesandDebtsOwedtotheInstitution

Shouldastudentorformerstudentfailtopayafeeoradebtowedtotheinstitution,theinstitutionmay“withholdpermissiontoregister,tousefacilitiesforwhichafeeisauthorizedtobecharged,toreceiveservices,materials,foodormerchandiseoranycombinationoftheabovefromanypersonowingadebt”untilthedebtispaid(seeTitle5,CaliforniaCodeofRegulations,Sections42380and42381).

ProspectivestudentswhoregisterforcoursesofferedbytheUniversityareobligatedforthepaymentoffeesassociatedwithregistrationforthosecourses.Failuretocancelregistrationinanycourseforanacademictermpriortothefirstdayoftheacademictermgivesrisetoanobligationtopaystudentfeesincludinganytuitionforthereservationofspaceinthecourse.

Theinstitutionmaywithholdpermissiontoregisterortoreceiveofficialtranscriptsofgradesorotherservicesofferedbytheinstitutionfromanyoneowingfeesoranotherdebttotheinstitution.Theinstitutionmayalsoreportthedebttoacreditbureau,offsettheamountdueagainstanyfuturestatetaxrefundsduethestudent,referthedebttoanoutsidecollectionagencyand/orchargethestudentactualandreasonablecollectioncosts,includingreasonableattorneyfeesiflitigationisnecessary,incollectinganyamountnotpaidwhendue.

WithdrawalsandLeaves

WithdrawalfromCourses

Thelastdayofthesemesteronwhichastudentmay,withtheapprovaloftheinstructor,addclassesisthesamedayofthethirdweekasthedayoftheweekonwhichclassesbegan.

Studentsmaywithdrawwithoutrestrictionorgradingpenaltyuptoandincludingthesixthdayofinstruction.Forthispurpose,Saturdayisnotcountedasadayofinstruction.StudentswhoseclassmeetsweeklyandwhosefirstclassisnotheldduetoaUniversityholidayshallbegivenonedayafterthefirstclassmeetingtowithdraw.Forthispurpose,Saturdayisnotcountedasadayofinstruction.

Insuchcases,norecordofindividualcoursewithdrawalappearsonthepermanentacademicrecord.

Dropsbetweentheseventhdayofinstruction,asexceptedabove,andtheendoftheeleventhweekofthesemesterarepermittedonlyforseriousandcompellingreasons.Thestudentmustobtainthesignaturesofthecourseinstructorandthedepartment/divisionchairorschooldirectoronadroprequestform,whichshallstatethereasonsforthewithdrawal.Undergraduatestudentsshallnotbeallowedtowithdrawfrommorethanatotalof18semesterunitsattemptedatCalStateLAexceptasspecifiedbelow.

CancellationofRegistrationorWithdrawalfromtheInstitution

Studentswhofinditnecessarytocanceltheirregistrationortowithdrawfromallclassesafterenrollingforanyacademictermarerequiredtofollowtheuniversity’sofficialwithdrawalprocedures.Failuretofollowformaluniversityproceduresmayresultinanobligationtopayfeesaswellastheassignmentoffailinggradesinallcoursesandtheneedtoapplyforreadmissionbeforebeingpermittedtoenrollinanotheracademicterm.InformationoncancelingregistrationandwithdrawalproceduresisavailableatAdministration146orbywritingapersonalrequesttotheOfficeofEnrollmentServices.

Studentswhoreceivefinancialaidfundsmustconsultwithafinancialaidofficerpriortowithdrawingfromtheuniversityregardinganyrequiredreturnorrepaymentofgrantorloanassistancereceivedforthatacademictermorpaymentperiod.Studentswhohavereceivedfinancialaidandwithdrawfromtheinstitutionduringtheacademictermorpaymentperiodmayneedtoreturnorrepaysomeorallofthefundsreceived,whichmayresultinadebtowedtotheinstitution.

CreditHour

AsofJuly1,2011federallaw(Title34,CodeofFederalRegulations,sections600.2and600.4)requiresallaccreditedinstitutionstocomplywiththefederaldefinitionofthecredithour.ForallCSUdegreeprogramsandcoursesbearingacademiccredit,the“credithour”isdefinedas“theamountofworkrepresentedinintendedlearningoutcomesandverifiedbyevidenceofstudentachievementthatisaninstitutionallyestablishedequivalencythatreasonablyapproximatesnotlessthan:

AcademicConsequences

Facultyhavetherighttoestablishthestandardsbywhichtheacademicperformanceofstudentswillbeevaluated,includingtheconsequencesofstudentsnotmeetingsomeportionoralloftheacademicrequirementsofacoursethroughactsofcheating,plagiarism,misrepresentationorcollusion.Theseconsequencesmayincludebutarenotlimitedtoassigningaloweredgrade,zeroor“F”onanindividualassignment,orloweringthestudent’sgradeorassigningan“F”inthecourse.Facultymayalternativelypermitthestudenttorepeatanassignment/testorcompleteandsubmitadditionalassignments.

AdministrativeSanctions

Full-TimeUnitLoadforGraduateStudents

Forfull-timeenrollmentcertificationbytheUniversity,graduatestudentsmustcarryaunitloadof8unitsofapprovedprerequisite,corequisite,orgraduateprogramcourses.Graduatecoursesinthe5000and6000numbersequencesarenolongerweighted(x1.5)whencalculatingenrollmentstatus(e.g.full-time,half-time,etc.).Uponrecommendationoftheirmajordepartment/division/schoolandapprovalbytheirappropriatecollegedean,studentswhoareenrolledinanyofthefollowingdepartment/division/schoolcoursesmaybecertifiedasfull-timestudentswithfewerthan8units:5960,5970,5990,5995,6990,(asofFall2017,5980and9000maynolongerbecertifiedasfull-timewithfewerthan8units).Themaximumunitloadforstudentsworkingtowardsagraduatedegreeis16unitspersemester.Authorizationtoenrollinmorethan16unitsrequiresapetitionapprovedbythestudent'smajordepartment/divisionchairorschooldirectorandtheappropriatecollegedean.

TheU.S.ImmigrationandNaturalizationService(INS)requiresanF-1international(visa)graduatestudenttocarryaminimumstudyloadof6semesterunitsof5000-levelcoursesor8semestersof4000-levelcourses.InternationalstudentsmustcomplywithallUniversityandINSregulations.

Graduatestudentswhoareingoodstandingandareenrolledinoneormoreresidencecoursesmayrequestpermissiontoreceivecreditforcoursesbyexamination.Graduatecreditbyexaminationisrestrictedtoeligible4000-and5000-levelcourseslistedinthiscatalog.Itiswithoutunitlimit,butdoesnotcountasresidencecredit.TotalcreditearnedforcoursesandexaminationstakeninSpecialSessionsmaynotexceedthelimitestablishedforSpecialSessionstudy.SeeUniversityRequirementsforMaster’sDegrees.

Priortotakingtheexamination,studentsmustobtainconcurrentapprovalofthechairofthedepartment/division/schoolconcerned,andtheinstructorforthecourse.Formsforapprovalmaybeobtainedfromdepartment/division/schooloffices.OnecopyoftheapprovaltotaketheexaminationmustbefiledwithEnrollmentServices,Admin.409,beforetheeighthweekofthesemesterinwhichtheexaminationistaken.

ForeignLanguageProficiencyExaminations

ModernLanguageReadingExamination

TheModernLanguageReadingExaminationisincludedinModernLanguagecourselistingsasModernLanguage(ML)4010.GraduatestudentswhoseprogramsrequirethattheypasstheexaminationmustobtainpermissionfromtheDepartmentofModernLanguagesandLiteraturesandpayanexaminationfeewhentheyregisterfortheexamination.Thefeemustbepaideachsemestertheexaminationisattempted.NootherregistrationfeesarerequiredwhenthestudentregistersonlyfortheModernLanguageReadingExamination,andstudentsarenotentitledtothesameprivilegesandservicesasstudentsenrolledinregularclasses.ModernLanguageReadingExaminationresultsarepostedonstudents’academicrecordandappearonofficialtranscripts.Thisexamisnotgivenduringthesummerterm.

IftheModernLanguageReadingexaminationisnotofferedincurrentorfutureterms,studentsshouldconsultwiththefacultygraduateadvisorintheirdepartmenttolearnhowtootherwisemeetthecorrespondingrequirement.

Scholarships

Thereareover300scholarshipsavailabletostudentswhoarecurrentlyattendingCalStateLA.Availablescholarshipshaveawidevarietyofcriteria,andmanyareforundergraduate,graduateandcertificatestudentsenrolledwiththeUniversity.Scholarshipsarebasedonsuchcriteriaasacademicmajor,academicachievement,campusand/orcommunityparticipation,financialneed,oravarietyofotherpurposes.Somescholarshipswillprovidefundingforstudentfees;otherswillsupportthecostofbooks,transportationandlivingexpenses.Studentswhowishtobeconsideredforallinstitutionalscholarshipsforwhichtheyarequalifiedshouldconsulttheinformationonthe“Scholarships”pageoftheCenterforStudentFinancialAid&Scholarshipswebsite.

ComputingFacilities

CalStateLAprovidesthelatestinformationtechnologyresourcestostudents,facultyandstaff.Studentshaveaccessto217electronicclassroomswithnetworkedcomputers,fivestudentOpenAccessLabs,threetraininglabsandmanyother“smart”rooms.Studentsalsohaveaccesstoavarietyofstate-of-the-art,campus-providedcomputerswithmorethan200softwarepackages,applicationsandplug-ins,includingthelatestwebbrowsers.Thecampuswidewirelessnetwork(802.11a/b/g/n)providesanytimenetworkaccesstoUniversityandInternetresourcesforlaptops,iPads,smartphonesandotherelectronicdevices.Accessisavailableinsideallclassroombuildingsandfromalloutsideareaswhereseatingisavailable.

MyCalStateLAIdentityisanonlineself-serviceofferingmanyfeaturesdesignedtoimproveserviceandaccessibilitytoinformation.Thisself-serviceautomaticallycreatesnewnetwork/e-mailaccounts,issuesnewaccountsandpasswordsonline,resetspasswordsonlineandreducesthesign-ontoGET,GETLAandothercampussystems.MyCalStateLAPortalrecognizeseachuser’sMyCalStateLAIdentityandopensaccesstoe-mail,WebCT,Moodle,electronicLibraryresources,systemsandtargetedannouncementsbasedontheuser’sUniversityrole.MyCalStateLACommunityenablesfaculty,administratorsandcampusgroupleaderstocreatetheirowncommunitiesofinteresttoshareideasandinformation.

Thewalk-upITSHelpDeskisavailablefivedaysaweektoassiststudents,facultyandstaffwithcomputerandnetworkrelatedproblems:phonesupportisavailableafterhours.

OpenAccessLabs(OAL)

OpenAccessLabsareavailabletostudentsduringdaytime,eveningandweekendhours.Thelabsarestaffedbyqualifiedstudenttechnologyassistantswhoanswerquestionsandprovideassistance.ThefiveOALsprovidestudentaccesstoavarietyofservicesincluding:useofWindowsandMACcomputers;printing;informalloungeenvironmentwithwirelessaccess.Inaddition,threeofthelabsalsohavesmartrooms,whichhavethesameequipmentastheelectronicclassrooms,allowingstudentstopracticetheirpresentations.
