The Graduate College Outreach Program
Graduate Assistantship Program
• Fall 2015 Recap/Debrief• GRA vs GTA vs GA• Fall 2016 Changes• What Are Your Needs?
Fall 2015 Recap/Debrief
• Introduced Tiers – compensation according to the work expectations– Allowed us to spread funds and cover more students
• Introduced Categories – GRA, GTA, GA– Prompted by ACA
• Introduced GRA Job Board– Need a more secure process
• Introduced Evaluations – faculty and student– Will be required of both at end of semester
GRA vs GTA vs GA
• GTA – Graduate Teaching Assistant– Most be the “teacher of record” (have a bachelors and 18
grad hours in field to teach undergrad)• GRA – Graduate Research Assistant– Primary duties are research with a faculty member
• GA – Graduate Assistant– Not a “teacher of record” and not primarily research,
although could have some elements of each• Goal is to have a “meaningful” experience for every
graduate student in the program.
Proposed Fall 2016 Changes
• Competitive review of all proposals – no allocations to programs
• Graduate Faculty desiring a GRA/GTA/GA submit a proposal to a graduate faculty review committee
• Need to determine timeline for submission of proposals (Mar 1?) and announcement of awards (Apr 1?)
• Need to determine criteria for review committee and committee structure (one per college?)
What Are Your Needs?
• Discussion Points:– How have you been using GRA/GTA/GAs?– Do you think your graduate students have
benefitted from holding an assistantship?– What needs are you trying to fill with Graduate
students? – How can we make it more “meaningful”?
