MATHEMATICS The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM), adopted by Wisconsin in 2010 and implemented in the Green Bay Area Public Schools beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, are designed to be focused, clear and rigorous. These standards are anchored in college and/or career readiness and are internationally benchmarked. The CCSSM Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout these courses, and, together with the content standards, help students to develop the habits of mind that will make them lifelong learners who approach problem solving as a logical process. Implementation of the CCSSM will result in some topics being shifted to earlier in students’ academic careers. For example, some topics previously covered in high school algebra courses will now be part of the 7th-grade Mathematics 2 course. Based on the increased rigor of the CCSSM and the movement of mathematical topics, students’ course placements should be carefully considered and discussed with their teachers.

Mathematics 1 – CCSSM – MID000625 or MID00B625 (bilingual section)* In this course students will: (1) use reasoning about multiplication and division to solve ratio and rate problems; (2) use the meaning of fractions, the meanings of multiplication and division, and the relationships between multiplication and division to understand and explain why the procedure for division of fractions make sense; (3) understand the use of variables in mathematical expressions and equations to describe the relationships between quantities; and (4) begin to develop their ability to think statistically. *Note: This course is also offered in Spanish at Edison Middle School for students who were in the Spanish two-way bilingual program at Danz Elementary.

Mathematics 1 – CCSSM Life Skills – FSE000625 The Life Skills option emphasizes development in mathematical operations and relationships.

Supplemental Mathematics 6 – MTH090625 Course Type: Enrollment in this course is based on achievement data and teacher recommendation. This course uses small group and individual instruction in order to accelerate progress for those who have been challenged by mathematics. Classroom activities are student-centered, emphasizing concrete mathematical experiences and active learning. The focus is on each student’s needs in order to help them to become proficient mathematicians. *Note: –Some middle schools may have some core academic sections that are scheduled with two teachers who collaborate to teach the course.

Classroom activities are student-centered, emphasizing concrete mathematical experiences and active learning. The focus is on each student’s needs in order to help them to become proficient mathematicians.

Accelerated 7th Grade Mathematics – MTH073325* (Prerequisite - Teacher Recommendation) This course differs from the non-accelerated Grade 7 Mathematics 2 - CCSSM course in that it also contains content from Grade 8 Mathematics 3 - CCSSM and demands a faster pace for instruction and learning. Students who successfully complete this course will complete Advanced Algebra-CCSSM 1 in the 8th grade. In this course students will: (1) develop an understanding of operations with rational numbers and integers and work with expressions and equations; (2) use equations and systems of equations to represent, analyze, and solve a variety of problems; (3) understand the effects of geometric transformation to solve problems involving scale drawings, informal geometric constructions, area, surface area, and volume; and learn to draw inferences about populations based on samples.

Advanced Math/Science Applications– MID078025 This course is designed for students with a strong interest in math and science. Students will explore and investigate various science topics through labs and projects. In doing so, students will use and enhance math skills that support the explorations and investigations presented in the course.
