NoticeboardEdwina Pogson sent the following about Mrs Elsie Regan:The sad news of Elsie’s deathwas sent to me in the second week of July. Many of the “older” residents of Ruan willremember how she was such a gentle and willing soul as she contributed to the life ofthe village. When Geoff and I first came to live at Trescovean, in the early 70s, Elsie was aChurchwarden. When John Fogg retired a year or two later, I became the SecondWarden. Eflsie and I worked together for some years before she left to live near herdaughter in Northern Ireland.Memories of the lovely garden parties we had down at the old Rectory. Also the FlowerFestivals we had at Church under the guidance of Ivy Fox. Elsie was always there quietlyworking away.I had the joy of being up in Grade Church for my God-daughter, Holly Lewis’s, weddingto Ben last month. As I sat up in the Chancel, I remembered Elsie climbing up on thecovered Altar to wash down the big East window during our annual Spring Clean. Shemust have been in her Seventies then! Elsie was certainly a valued member of the GradeRuan community in her day.I heard from her every year. She so wanted to reach 100 years of age to receive theCongratulation card from the Queen. Sadly she died within 5 or 6 months of achievingher wish. Our condolences go to her daughter Margaret, and family.

Irene Woollands would like to thank her neighbours and friends for their kindness, support and cards after the sudden death from natural causes of her youngest daughter,Janet May Woollands, aged 41, on 20 June. Our thoughts are with you at this sad time,Irene.

It’s nice to hear that David Gascoigne is back home after his stay in Treliske, althoughstill rather weak after having had two operations in the space of four days. I’m sure youwill all join me in wishing him a speedy recovery.

Danny Meek is now up and about, and seems to be getting the better of his crutches.Hang in there, Danny….

If, like me, you thought an adder’s bite was nothing really to worry about, then JonathanCoudrille can tell us a thing or two. He was bitten and says that it gave him a mostunexpected week of extreme weakness, pain and other symptoms necessitatingproximity to the Plumbing. He managed to continue with his obligations, including a shortconcert performance, but was not able to drive. He says “British-adder bite is not, as Ibelieved, trivial but serious, requiring, I am told by our excellent GP, the amputation of alimb on occasion.” We’re glad that you have survived intact, Jonathan, and send bestwishes for a full recovery.

Happy Birthday. Birthday greetings for August go to: Colin Cooper, Sally Sugrue,Ashton K, Alfie J, Barbara Rosindale, Richard Palmer, Rowan, Katie H, Pip, Sue Codling,Ruby Langley, Peter Mason, Theo, Shamaun Hall, Jo Sugrue, Gemma Lester Bennett,

A big, big thank you to the Cadgwith Conservation Committee for their wonderfulgenerosity in donating £500 to the Gazette. It will make our Treasurer’s life so mucheasier, as it will provide a float in the bank account to cover the ups and downs of incomeand expenditure each month. The Cadgwith Conservation Committee was set up a fewyears ago by Raymond Skewes, Peter Freeman, Steven Holyer and Kate Phillips. They put on some fundraising BBQs and have now decided to use some of the funds tohelp the Gazette. The note that came with the cheque said “We certainly don’t want tolose something that the whole village enjoys. Many thanks Ginny, Moira, John and Sally”.From all of us on the Gazette, Thank you, your help is very much appreciated.

There were64 teams from Holland, Germany, Finland, Belgium and the UK and histeam, the "Kernow Bears", came 9th overall, which was a greatachievement. They played really well and were very unlucky to beknocked out in a penalty shootout. Jack had a wonderful time and itwas a great opportunity for him. They were away for 10 days, so hadtime to visit a German theme park and to watch a match in Holland. They even briefly popped over to Belgium on the way back to buysome proper chocolate, so it was a very multinational trip! Edwina Pogson, who wrote the lovely piece about Elsie Regan, hopes to be back forgood in the autumn, although she has to “defect” to Mullion, as that is where she haseventually found a suitable property. However, she says she’ll certainly be over in Ruanvery often, and that it will be so good to be back.

Sam and Rose Bowcher would like to thank family and friends for the lovely presents, flowers and cards they received on the occasion of their Golden Wedding anniversary. Also a big thank you to David and Linda of the Cadgwith Cove Pub for the lovely meal. They did us proud.

After performing at Glastonbury in June, Gwen Scolding is preparing to set off on 5thSeptember to spend a year on a somewhat remote Thai island near the Burmese (ormore correctly Myanmar) border. She and her partner, Sam, have volunteered to workat a small Thai school for Burmese children, many of whom are sea gipsies. Gwen willbe teaching English and Drama and doing arts and crafts with the children.

The School minibus appeal was the nominated charity for the bucket collection on FolkDay. £150 was raised by the singers and musicians over the weekend.

Here is a quote from the June Parish Council minutes contained further on in thisGazette: “Hervan Lane – there is still a smell but as it is only passersby who havecomplained and not residents, Cornwall Council are not obliged to take action”. WendyElliott has taken this up on behalf of the PC and says that, in response to manycomplaints, Mr. Hewitt from the Environmental Health Department has repeatedly beenin touch with South West Water. Mr Richard Gilpin is the man from SWW who is dealingwith the problem. If anyone would like to add their voice to those already asking for thisproblem to be addressed, the telephone number for SWW is 0800 1691144 and the postcode to give relating to the affected area is TR12 7AU.

New Lizard Lifeboat Visits Cadgwith

On Sunday 10th July, TheLizard’s new Tamar class life-boat RNLB Rose, paid a visitto Cadgwith. It was a proudmoment for all those whohave worked so hard formany years to raise the nec-essary £300,000 contributionto the cost.

RNLB Rose and crew met upoff Black Head with the Tyneclass David Robinson, andboth lifeboats made their wayto Cadgwith, where they weremet by a flotilla of small craft. The many well wishers liningthe cove applauded andcheered.

The new lifeboat is called Rose after the main benefactor, who wishes to remainanonymous. All the station has been told is that a lady called Rose set up a trustfund to pay the £1.5m naming rights of the £2.7m lifeboat. It is not known whereRose lives or what her connection with the RNLI or The Lizard is or was.

The RNLB Rosewent into servicethe following week, with her crewhaving completedweeks of intensivetraining on all thenew technology. The RNLB DavidRobinson left theLizard on Saturday23rd July 2011.

Good luck to theRose and all hercrew!

Grade-Ruan Under 5s Mullion SchoolGrade-Ruan C of E SchoolSchool Spot

Under 5s The Under 5s have had a busylast few weeks of term. We had a sponsoredToddle to Cadgwith beach, raising money forBarnardo's and enjoying the sunshine. Thanks to Nigel for showing us his catch offish, crabs and lobsters. Amazingly all thechildren managed to walk there and backwithout complaints … and they only have littlelegs. Our potato harvest was successful - 23decent sized white potatoes and 40 of thepink variety. As I write the strawberries areturning red and the pumpkins are progressingwell.

Our outing was to the Seal Sanctuary anddespite a little rain it was a lovely trip. Theseals, penguins and otters were great towatch and the pirate ship kept manyoccupied for ages.

There are spaces for all ages in September, children are eligible for 15 hours of fundedprovision from the term after their thirdbirthday. Please ring Jan 01326 290978 forfurther information or pop into the village hallin September.

We are hoping to reinforce our links with theschool which will enhance and extend theprovision we can offer. Further details will beexplored once the new term starts but pleaselet us know if you are looking for childcaresolutions that are not available in the villageat this time. Jan Halliday

Grade-Ruan C of E School It has been theusual gallop to the end of term ... no let up onevents and activities until the final bell. It'sbeen a month of trying new things .... childrenin Years 1, 2 and 3 enjoyed a cookerydemonstration and learned how to makepancakes and Years 3-6 had a roller skatingsession in the school hall. Gravity triumpheda few times but this did not diminish the fun!

There were two lots of school trips: Years 4and 5 ventured off on a two night camping trip

Mullion School The Year 7s had 'anabsolutely fab' trip to Brittany! Activitiesincluded interesting walks, two beach trips, achance to explore the market in Morlaix(twinned with Truro!) and a trip to a themepark (on Poppy McMinn's birthday!).

The Year 9s had another successful trip tothe Outdoor Adventure centre at Bude wherethey tried abseiling, canoeing, surfing, climbing, coastal traversing, orienteering, beach games, coastal walk, finishing off witha barbecue and music night.

The Year 10s have had a taster of theworking world after a week at workexperience - pupils ventured far and wide toplacements including Spider Eye AnimationStudio in St Just, RNAS Culdrose,Camborne Police Station, OutdoorAdventure in Bude and Bishop's Forum atPenryn.

And those that stayed in school while somany were gallivanting, didn't miss out - forthem it was Activities Week withopportunities to indulge in craft sessions, baking, a photography day out at PoldhuBeach, BBQ and beach games onGunwalloe and use of the facilities at MullionHoliday Park.

The School's production of the Jon Welchplay 'Dancing Round the Crocodile' wasoutstanding. An incredible performance fromthe cast and choir, working from a superbscript - delivered with an emotion andmaturity that utterly belied their years andexperience. It was a privilege to see it - welldone to all involved - just fabulous!

The Farmers' Markets will be going onthrough the summer and into the autumn - domake a note in your calendar for the thirdSaturday in every month, 9.30am-12 noon inthe school hall.

There is nothing much further to report on theplans for a new pavilion, other than fingerscrossed for the planning application – as I write, the decision is expected soon, as you read, wewill know one way or the other! I understand there have been a fewobjections to the application. I don’t know thenature of the objections, or who made them, butI can appreciate how the owners of neighbouringproperties might be concerned about having abig new building forced upon them. All I can dois try to reassure them that we have tried tobalance the need for a building that meets astated need and has the facilities needed togenerate the revenue needed to pay for itsupkeep, with a design brief to keep the roof-lineand overall profile as low as possible. I know thatthe roof on the plans shown at the publicmeeting earlier in the year had a “pyramid”shape so as not to block anyone’s view (as far aspossible"), but with the changes asked for at thatmeeting the shape had to be changed. We wereasked to provide a bigger building and it waspointed out that the roof shape would be verydifficult (in other words, expensive!) to build, sowe have gone for a slightly more “conventional”design. There is still the “veranda” along thefront and shallow roof section at the back, so theoverall height is exactly the same as the previousplan, and, indeed no more than 1m taller thanthe existing flat-roof arrangement. I believe this is the best chance we will

get to build a new pavilion for the RecreationGround. This size of building will allow it to beavailable to hire, so that we can cover its runningcosts. The football club can hold social functionsto raise funds for the club – so they can afford topay for the use of the changing rooms. There isthe possibility that the playgroup will use thebuilding, as its size, facilities and location arebetter suited to their needs. The main room andsmaller meeting room, with level access anddisabled toilets, meet the need for smallerrooms than the Village Hall can easily provide. (Idon’t see this as being in any way in competitionwith the Village Hall, more a complementaryresource) If we don’t get permission, and grantfunding, we only have 3 options: We try again, but on a much smaller scale,

probably just providing changing / toiletfacilities and a small kitchen. There is no waythis limited facility can generate usefulrevenue, so we would need completefunding from the Parish to run it.

We could spend some time and money tore-furbish the existing building. There arefundamental problems with the age, and“temporary” nature of the building – theroof leaks in several places, and due tocorrosion it is really beyond simple patching– The floor is full of holes, mostlyconsequence of rain water, but with voids

and gaps for vermin to get in – The existingdoors and windows cannot be made secure,as witnessed by the number of break-insover the last year – and last but not least, theinterior would need a thorough re-build. Thisis a major project, probably costing almost asmuch as the proposed new build, butwithout the potential to generate significantrevenue to cover running costs.

The remaining option is simply to demolishwhat we have and clear the site.Unfortunately, this would almost certainlymean the loss of the football club.

As far as the existing building is con-cerned, I can report that it now has functioningshowers, as required by the football league. Thanks to Dom Goldsack for his prompt work! It’s been a busy summer season for us, with Cadgwith Gig Club out and about onthe local circuit. The Juniors have been on good form, winning at St Ives andFalmouth, and they are now looking forward to the U14 and U16 Championships.Several events have unfortunately been cancelled after falling foul of poor weatheror big seas. Fingers crossed for nature being on our side on August 6th, which is ourown event, Buller Day here in Cadgwith Cove. There will be 16 visiting gigs, andadditional crews coming from Scilly, and as far away as Bristol to borrow our boats,so it promises to be a busy day. Do come down to watch the fun! We’ll be running aBBQ all day, and selling sandwiches and cakes from the gig shed. Later the gig shedwill host our customary Buller Night Party, with a live band booked again this year. The bar will also be open on the Friday night, so we’ll be warming up on Buller Eve,hopefully with singing on the slip.Buller Cup in July was well attended, with a bus trip running up to Newquay for ourtraditional night of friendly racing between the two clubs. This time Stuart George,Gary Pulfrey and Dave Bray were in the winning crew in Rose, as was the first everfemale (a Newquay rower) in a Buller Cup race – and possibly the last if the ladiesmake a habit of winning!A Cadgwith Ladies Crew (Sam Jane, Sue Atkinson, Sarah Hammill-Rudd, EmmaGeorge, Katie Jose, Naomi Harry, coxed by Stuart George) recently took part in arace from Sennen Cove, in aid of women’s cancer charities, and raised an admirable£240 of the £1000 or so raised by the event. The sea was too rough to allow the gigsto go around the Longships lighthouse as planned, but a good race was hadnonetheless, and we congratulate the girls on their achievements.Looking beyond Buller Day, Peter and Tony Night is on Friday 26th August this year, and then September and the Newquay Championships will be upon us before weknow it!Please do get in touch if you would like to get involved, as we are always keen togive people the opportunity to try our sport. Well the summer is flying by, with theNational Trust team of staff and volunteerskept busy locally with a varied mix of things, from practical work out on the cliffs, to visitingschool groups and guided walks.

We’re gearing up to once again host Grade-Ruan School’s summer play, which explainsthe strange things that have appeared in theorchard at Poltesco in the last few weeks! We wish everyone involved well for theupcoming performances. All pupils fromGrade-Ruan School bar those in Brittanyjoined us for two days of fun at Poltesco inJune. On Monday yrs 3-6 were challenged inteams to build their own shelters frombamboo, poles, bracken and other naturalmaterials at hand. The dens were soon put tothe test as the rain set in, but even theweather couldn’t dampen high spirits aseveryone rose to the construction challenge.A wildlife quiz, painting with berries, charcoal, chalk and other natural pigments, and a ‘ropechallenge’ rounded off an action packed day.The pupils were set the task of making a ropestrong enough to lift their head teacher MrHarman, from nothing more than leaves.Everyone soon mastered the art of strippingNew Zealand flax leaf fibres and twisting andbraiding them into cord, which was plaitedtogether to make a rope that passed the testwith flying colours!

On Tuesday the younger classes joined theolder children, and all were treated to tales ofthe old serpentine factory in the cove atPoltesco, and the mysterious loss of a cargoof polished stoneware at sea, which helpedseal the demise of this once bustlingVictorian industry. A drama session withprofessional storyteller Mark Harandon forthe older pupils, and a fishing game for theyounger children, rounded off a fun-filled fewdays. We must point out in the interests ofhistorical accuracy that we do not know theorigins of the nicely carved ‘A’ set into one ofserpentine stones within the ruined walls of

the factory. It does make a nice story though(particularly woven into a tale with Mark’schinking sound effects) that a boy was partway through carving his name, when he wasdistracted by the sinking barge! We don’tknow that there are serpentine fireplaces onthe seabed either, but that’s not beyond therealms of possibility!

Landwednack Class 1 had a fun day’srockpooling with us at Carleon, and learnedto fish – even if it was only with magnets andpaper fish! As part of the Festival of BritishArchaeology in July, we’ll be running aguided walk, exploring the fascinating historyof Poltesco valley, from farming and mills, topilchard cellars and the ruined serpentinefactory.

And then there’s all the practical stuff!Strimming and flailing paths to keep themaccessible, fixing steps and caring for theShetland ponies. Our regular herd of 7 isback out on the cliffs between Poltesco andCadgwith (where they’ll be for the next fewmonths), doing a great job of munching theirway through the coarser vegetation to openup areas for wildlife. We’d be grateful for yourhelp in dissuading people from feeding theponies, which seems to be more of a problemhere than elsewhere, as it encourages themto crowd around and follow humans, andcould ultimately make the ponies unsuitablefor their role as conservation graziers.

You may be aware that there have been afew changes within The National Trust inrecent months. We are now Rangers, ratherthan Wardens, a shift in emphasis that willallow us to do even more work with people, whether that be guided walks, communitygroups or school visits. To free up our time, agreater proportion of practical maintenance, such as footpath cutting, is likely to becontracted out in future. Staff are no longeron contracts that include housing (and officespace at home), so as a consequence we are

Gardening in Augustand September

In my opinion over the past fewmonths the back breaking work has beendone and it is time to enjoy the garden for itsbeauty and bountiful harvests. That is not tosay that there is nothing to be done in yourlittle Eden, as you know by now a gardenermust always be looking and thinking monthsahead if not more. Many of your traditionalherbaceous perennials may now be lookinga bit tired, so dead head them and trim themback where necessary. One type ofherbaceous plant which looks good from nowuntil the autumn are Heleniums, they come invarious shades of what I call autumn colours, which are yellows through burnt oranges tomaroon. They also come in various sizesfrom short front of border interest to tall (4 feetor more) back of border fillers. I like them anda reasonable selection can be found locallybut they do have one down side in thatalthough they like full sun they prefer cool feetso a soil which dries out and bakes is notideal unless you can give them more water. Aplant with a similar colour scheme but is lessfussy about soil conditions is Rubeckiafulgida, especially the variety Goldsturn. Theycan make quite good cut flowers and willbrighten up the garden as the days shorteninto autumn. As we move into September oneplant that we cannot forget to mention is theAster or Michaelmas Daisy. The colours aremore tranquil but are certainly worth theirplace in the garden. Their forms also varyfrom tall frothy types to eight inch tallshocking pink cushions of flower. Asters cansuffer from mildew so therefore I suggest youtry the nova belgii types for their resistance tothis. Keep up the watering and deadheading of the summer annuals, theseshould be filling out now and covering thegaps left from your spring bulbs. When gaps

do appear consider planting with some winterbedding like wallflowers, primroses or violas. September is a good time to startplanting your spring bulbs and even if youdo not plant them now start to buy them earlyso you get the best firm bulbs from thevarieties that you really like. It may well seemlike a long way off but you will need to plantnow or in October to get flower for the springshow in March. But much closer is the autumn showand so I thought that I would tell you some ofthe tricks to get better blooms on yourDahlias for the show. Firstly do not let all yourbuds develop. Pinch out those flower budseither side of the main central bud, this willleave a single flower to develop, I thenremove some of the side shoots down themain stem. At least the first pair of side shootsneed to be removed and more on the largerflowered cultivars. The only type of Dahliathat this method can be problematical withare Pom Pom blooms which need to be lessthan 2 inches in diameter therefore leave theuntil much later before the show. Thisdisbudding encourages larger better shapedblooms with more petals. This method alsohelps you to time your blooms for the show.Pom poms take 14 days for a bud the size ofa large pea to develop into a show bloom, large blooms take 28 days and the giantstake 36 or more days. In the vegetable garden there islittle to sow now but harvesting is well underway. There are still a few quick crops whichyou can sow, mainly quick maturing brassicasthings like garden turnips, pak choi and itsoriental siblings, spring green cabbage andperhaps some swedes. In general I would saythat it is late for swede but I know a farmerwho when he direct drills his spring greencabbage in the field always mixed a domesticsized packet of swede in with the cabbageseed. This would be put in the seed drill and

Page 36: Grade Ruan Gazette - Cadgwith · 2018. 1. 30. · 4 August Fish supper (mackerel) in aid of Fishermen’s Mission. 8.30pm in the Cove 6 August Buller Day 7.30 p.m. The Night Before

36

sown and when the cabbage came to beharvested the odd swede would turn up theywere no great specimens but wereserviceable examples ideal for a family meal. There is still time for some saladslike radish and spring onions and also lettuce,at this time of year the loose leaved lettucevarieties are the best bet to grow. If you wantjust those tender baby leaves it really doesnot matter what type you sow therefore if youhave part of a packet left over give it a go. August is the time many gardeners’thoughts turn to Christmas and providingsomething fresh and special for theChristmas dinner. In the past I have grownnew potatoes for the festive period and sonow is the time to plant what are termed assecond crop potato tubers. These are quickmaturing varieties which have been coolstored for this purpose. But I have a few leftover Winston seed potatoes which I think Imay give a try this year. I will plant them inlarge pots or bags in some good compostwith plenty of fertiliser, I can then move theminside if the weather gets too bad.

Young finger type carrots are alsoworth a shot, sow a quick maturing type likeAmsterdam Forcing or Early Nantes and keepwell watered. One added benefit from sowingnow you are less likely to be troubled bycarrot fly due to their lifecycle. These can besown outside but even better is in a deep potor tub in the greenhouse if you have the roomthey will take a little more care but you willhave more success. I hope that those exhibition leeksare coming on a treat now just keep themgrowing steadily; I do not feed them as theytend to split their skins deep in the shaft if youdo this. Keep the plants weed free and put thefinal blanching collars on, I suggest that youaim for a blanch length of 18 or 20 incheslong but you could go to 22 inches. When youinspect your collars check the plants for pestsand remove any dead leaves and split leaves.Next time I will tell you how to prepare youtreasured beauties for the show.

Well I reckon that I have waffled onlong enough, so now it is down to you to enjoyyour gardening.

Words by Dave LeggettDrawings by Jen Stevens

You’d think it would be simple if you took a car and droveFrom Cadgwith up to Ruan in a hurry from the CoveBut hang on just a minute,There’s nothing simple in it,The Cadgwith-Ruan Minor Car-Reversing Tango!

You’re just up to pub corner and there’s suddenly in viewA great big green Range Rover and it’s bearing down on youSomeone’s parked in the passing-place,Leaving insufficient spaceNow you’re doing that Car-Reversing Tango!

Just past Rene’s Cottage and things are getting worse,Great Granddad in a Morris Minor, he can’t find reverseGears are crunching merrily,He’ll be very glad to seeYou’re doing that Car-Reversing Tango

You’re just up by Tremarne now, quite near your journey’s end,But a flashy silver Mercedes is coming round the bend,If he’s spent fifty thousand pounds,You’d think his driving would be soundThat this time he’d do that dratted Tango — — —He’s got ten yards to back up, much too difficult for himSo you find yourself reversing back 100 yards to Tim’sHe’s very grateful,He knows it would be hateful,For him to do that Car-Reversing Tango

The next time that I go to Ruan, I’ll forget the car,And stamp it, breathless, up Barn Hill, it’s easier by farThose non-reversing assesShould take some dancing classesThe Cadgwith-Ruan Minor Car-Reversing TangoOLE!

During a leave period I had spent sometime rehearsing assembling a lighthouse. These lights were manufactured by acompany called Stone Chance inCrawley, Sussex! They were sent out inbits ready for assembly on site. TheCommonwealth Lighthouse Serviceincreased the number of lighthouses by afew each year as the trade up and downthe West Coast increased. We built oneeach year in the Western Australia area;this included the Northern Territory intothe Gulf of Carpentaria to the Queenslandborder. The building operation wasplanned meticulously. The lighthousewas assembled and repacked by theship’s officer who was going to be

responsible for the building on site. Thisensured that the operation wasthoroughly understood and ensured thatall the parts, panels, nuts and bolts, gaskets, frames, battery supports andsundry bits were all there and repackedby the person responsible. The whole kitis then loaded into the ship and the bigday arrives when the ship anchors off thesite for the Lighthouse, in my case, BradyRock. This is a speck on the Westernshore of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The kit, amounting to a few hundredweight, isloaded into two workboats and landedashore at six in the morning along withme, a couple of ABs and the Deck Boy.We start by carrying the wooden form

work up to the top of the Island, not far, itis a small Island. This is followed by thetemplate for the base of the lighthouseand the nuts and bolts for the base too. Then the cement, aggregate, cheecol, steel bars, reinforcing rods and the drumsof fresh water are carried up with themanual cement mixer. The baseformwork is placed where it fits best andthe steel rods are driven into the soil androck. The cement is mixed and pouredand the base plate is sunk into the dampconcrete and supported on twigs whichare left there as the concrete dries.

We light a small fire and boil the billy andhave breakfast while the concrete isgoing off. We then rig two planks over thestill soft base and balance the bottomthree panels and the door over thetemplate and bolt them together. Weassemble the battery shelves and the restof the interior framework for the light. An

early lunch; after which the base is dryand the bottom panels and the door canbe bolted securely to the base and the topones can be put in position and the roofsecured to them after all the interiorframes are secured to the panels and toeach other. The light itself is then carefullylifted onto the top of the now fourteen foothigh structure using an A-frame carriedashore just for this task. Tea time. Thewhole lot is then bolted, checked andrechecked, the batteries installed andwired up. We then sit about looking as ifwe did all this work by just after lunchwhen the lighthouse mechanic arrives toadjust the focal plane on the light, testeverything and activate it. As we leaveBrady Rock there is a lighthouse, flashingreassuringly for all passing mariners. Itwill continue to do this for at least sixmonths until it is checked again. COLIN THE COD

There once was a Cod called Colin,Who lived all his life in a tin.

But at one thing there was no-one hotter,He became a champion crab spotter.

Some would call him a bit of a bore,While others would say GET OUT MORE.

FIERY EVIL DRAGON.

Over the medieval blue sky’s of old Helston town,Flew a young St Micheal with a furrowed frown.

A fiery evil dragon was giving him some jip,So he scat him into Low pool, just by a ship.

He smiled to himself and thought I’m glad that I won,I bet now they’ll be dancing in the streets in the years to come.

MR BLACKBIRD

Good morning Mr Blackbird how are you today,I see you’ve been in the farmyard playing in the hay,Your feathers are all fluffed up like a teddy bear,And I can’t think up any more, so I think I’ll leave it there.

“Are you going on holiday this summer?” It’s often a question asked at this timeof year, when so many people are sorting outtheir holiday clothes, the camping gear, thekids’ wetsuits and body boards; packing upthe car, the Campervan, the rucksack orsuitcase – for a couple of week’s holiday (ormaybe more, if you’re lucky!): away from the‘phone and the e-mails; away from thepressures of work, school; and, dare I say it,away from the pressures of those DIY andgardening jobs, too! Holidays are a great institution – a timewhen we can really chill out and enjoy beingwith family and/or friends; or just enjoy ourown company and do our own thing for achange. The word, ‘holiday’ comes, of coursefrom two words: ‘holy day’. For Christians, these ‘holy days’ are the major festivals (egChristmas, Easter, Pentecost) together withsaints’ days. The whole point of a holy day hasalways been to step out of our daily routineand to have time to focus on God – ourCreator, Redeemer and Life-giver. Jesus often did just this. He tookhimself off – sometimes into the desert;sometimes to a quiet spot, just to be awayfrom the crowds; and, latterly, in the Gardenof Gethsemane. He did this simply to BE withGod – to pray, to speak with God, and tolisten to what God was saying to him. Jesus’chill-out time, his time-out with God kept himgoing – spiritually, mentally and physically. We can’t all afford a holiday away. Butwe can all afford a ‘holy day’ - or at least part

of a day - a time when we can once againfocus on our Maker and upon all the richesof His blessings; a time to take stock andreview our own priorities; a time to be re-energised by His Spirit! A time to commitourselves once again to God. There are many different ways to dothis: go on a Retreat; try a Quiet Day; try art, craft or music to engage with God; try aprayer walk …………… so many ways! Just DO IT! And if you would like someguidance or more information onexperiencing a holy day, just contact me.BlessingsRevd Deirdre 01326 [email protected]
