OCTOPUSESOctopuses are considered to be one of the smartest invertebrates in the world.

InvertebratesInvertebrates are creatures without a backbone. The octopus, like the squid, are actually close relatives of the snail and slug. The octopus is a cephalopodlike the squid. Cephalopod in Greek, means “head foot.” Cephalopods have arms or tentacles connected to their heads.

The octopus’ tentacles are long and flexible. They are used not only for moving around, but for hunting prey.

Octopus Anatomy The octopus has 8 tentacles connected to its head. Most of an octopus’ organs, like its heart, is protected inside the mantle. The mantle contracts to help the octopus breathe. Octopuses have great eyesight that allow them to see in the dark, murky waters so they can hunt their prey. The tentacles are long and strong. They can use these arms to hold their prey. Under each of the octopus’ arms are rows of cup-shaped suckers. These suckers not only give them a good grip, but they also help them taste their prey. Octopuses also have strong hard beaks that can crack different shellfish. Interestingly, the octopus also has three hearts!

Intelligent InvertebratesOctopuses have large brains and are known for their intelligence as well. Scientists have studied how they solve puzzles. Some octopuses can use their tentacles to unscrew jar lids to get the food inside. Some octopuses can find food in irregularly shaped boxes too. Underwater, these smart creatures are known for stealing lobsters and other shellfish

One particular octopus became famous for “predicting” the results of the World Cup. Paul the Octopus was given two boxes with the flags of two opposing teams. He predicted the winning team by opening the box of one team. He had predicted the outcome accurately for the 2010 World Cup.

Marco Polo

Marco grew up in Venice, Italy. Venice was a wealthy trading city. Marco's father was a merchant, or a person who makes his or living by buying and selling goods.

The Silk RoadThe Silk Road was a number of trade routes between major cities that led from Eastern Europe to Northern China. Most people did not travel the whole route. They went to different sections or to other cities. Goods would make their way from one end of the route to another.

Marco Polo's father and uncle wanted to travel all the way to China and bring different goods back to Venice. They thought they would make their fortune. After nine years of traveling, they made their way home to Venice.

Marco went on another trip with his father and uncle to China when he was seventeen years old. It took them three years to get to China, but Marco saw many sights. He even lived in China for many years. He learned the language, culture, and even worked as a messenger and spy for Kublai Khan. Kublai Khan was the leader of China during this time.

Marco Polo was an Italian merchant, explorer, traveler, and writer. He was born in Venice, Italy in 1254. During this time period, it was not easy to travel from one country to another. It definitely wasn't easy to travel from one continent to another. Planes and cars had not yet been invented. He was the first European to document his experience in traveling to China. His book inspired Christopher Columbus and other explorers later in history.

Dolphins eat fish and squid. Dolphins are very social. They entertain

people with their friendly faces and playfulness. Dolphins are sometimes

thought of as the dogs of the sea because they are usually playful and

friendly. They’re also among the smartest animals on Earth. Scientists

believe they are as smart as chimpanzees or dogs.

PorpoisesPorpoises are marine mammals. They are warm-

blooded and give birth to their offspring. Porpoises can

only be found in the Pacific Ocean. Porpoises eat fish

and squid.

Porpoises look much like dolphins, but they are different in some ways.

They are smaller and stouter. They have spade-shaped teeth, rounded

heads, blunt jaws, and triangular dorsal fins. Unlike dolphins, porpoises are

quite shy creatures and avoid people. They do not perform acrobatics in

the water. They are intelligent creatures that can learn many tricks when

they are kept in captivity.

Ferdinand MagellanFerdinand Magellan was born in Portugal in 1480. Magellan enjoyed sailing and exploring new lands for Portugal. During those days, people believed that the world was flat. They only knew one route to get to India, which was going around Africa. However, Magellan thought that there may be another way to get to India.

People in Portugal and Spain wanted to get to India so they could get spices. These were very expensive and important during this time. Magellan tried to convince the King of Portugal that there might be another way to India by going west and travelling around the Americas. The King of Portugal did not support Magellan’s idea, so Magellan went to the King of Spain. The King of Spain funded and supported this exploration.

In 1519, Magellan set sail with 5 ships and over 200 men. They found the strait and named it All Saint’s Channel. This is now called Magellan’s Strait. While Magellan successfully found another route to prove his theory, he never made it back to Spain to become the first person to circumnavigate the world. He was killed in the Philippines after a disagreement with the locals. His remaining 18 sailors and a lone ship, The Victoria, however, made it back to Spain in 1522. These sailors were the first ones to complete a journey around the world.

This pushed Pele back towards her angry sister, the sea goddess. The two sisters fought. Pele’s flames and fiery anger threw lava into the ocean.

Soon, the sea had moved away from the coast and was replaced by lava. The lava cooled and became the Big Island of Hawaii.

Pele won, but she was wounded and injured. She eventually died and became a spirit. She lived in the crater of a volcano. Sometimes, she appears to human as a beautiful woman, or an old, fragile lady.

What does the stomach do?Your stomach is like a sack that stores food. The stomach mixes and

mashes food down even more. Gastric juices break down food into a

soupy mix.

What happens when food leaves the stomach?Food moves from the stomach into the small intestine. Your small

intestine isn't very small. It's a really, really long tube. The small

intestine breaks food down even more. Now your body can absorb,

or take in, nutrients from the food.

What happens when you eat? When you chew, your teeth help break down

food into smaller pieces. Your tongue pushes

food around to help you eat. The saliva, or spit

inside your mouth, helps break down food. This

makes it easier to swallow. When you swallow,

food goes into your throat. It moves down the

esophagus. The esophagus is like a stretchy pipe

that connects to your stomach.

Muscles are special parts of the body that help you move. Many muscles connect to bones and joints, and they work together to move.Muscles are made of a special body tissue that can contract. When something contracts, it gets shorter. Muscles contract and relax to help you move. They are like a rubber band that can stretch. There are over six hundred muscles in your body, and they do different things.

Voluntary MusclesA voluntary muscle is a muscle you can control when you want to. The voluntary muscles in the body works together to help you move. You can control the muscles in your legs and feet when you run. You use your arm muscles to pick up a toy. You use your leg muscles to kick a ball.

Involuntary MusclesInvoluntary muscles are those that you can’t control. Your heart is an involuntary muscle. It beats without any help from you. It pumps blood faster when you’re active. It slows down when you slow down. When you eat, food gets pushed down your throat and into your stomach. Involuntary muscles help move food through your body. When you eat, food gets pushed down your throat and into your stomach. Involuntary muscles help move food through your body.

Some muscles, such as those in your arms and legs, grow larger if you exercise them and become smaller if you don’t. You can keep muscles healthy by eating plenty of protein and healthy food every day. Working your muscles makes them stronger.

Taiga ForestTaiga forests are dry and cold. They are sometimes called boreal or coniferous forests. The taiga forest has characteristics that are unique to it:

• Cold weather: Winters in taiga forests can get very cold and last for about six months. Summer months are very short too.

• Dry: the average precipitation is only 12-30 inches only per year.

• Thin layer of soil: most trees in the taiga forest don’t drop their leaves, so there are very little nutrients that drop and get absorbed by the soil

• Evergreen trees: These trees have dark green leaves that help them gain energy from the sun through photosynthesis.

• Short growing season: growing season only lasts for about three months, so plants have very little time to grow.

Taiga forests can be found in countries in the Northern Hemisphere like Russia, Siberia and Scandinavia. Aside from evergreen trees with tough barks that can survive the winter, the Taiga is also home to predators like wolves, lynx and wolverines. Moose, deer, elk and bears are also live in taiga forests.

1.What two words best describe taiga forests?

a. wet and warmb. dry and coldc. dry and humidd. wet and cold

2. Why do you think trees in the taiga forest have thick trunks?

The heart also has valves that open and close as the heart beats. This makes sure the blood flows in and out in one direction only.

In order to grow healthy and strong, we must have a balanced diet. This means eating foods that belong to different food groups. Each food group has unique benefits that can help our bodies function very well.

VegetablesCarrots, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, squash and beets have vitamin A. This helps protect and heal our bodies. Dark green vegetables, like broccoli, spinach, kale and collard greens have calcium which our bodies use to grow strong bones.

FruitsFresh fruits and vegetables have fiber, which our digestive system uses to stay healthy. Fresh apples, oranges, bananas and other fruits are loaded with vitamins that we need to have healthy eyes and skin. Fruits have different kinds of nutrients that help our bodies build strong immune systems and fight diseases.

GrainsBread, rice, pasta, oats, and cereal are all part of the grains group. Most grains you eat should be whole grains, which are more nutritious. Grains contain carbohydrates which supplies energy for the body.

ProteinThe protein food group includes meats like chicken, beef, and fish. It also includes eggs, nuts, beans and tofu. Our bodies use proteins to build muscles.

DairyThe dairy food group includes milk, soy milk, cheese and yogurt. Dairy foods have calcium which our bodies use to grow healthy bones, teeth and hair. Milk is a great source of vitamin D too, which our bodies need in order to get calcium.

Marine BiomesThe Marine biome is the largest biome on Earth. It covers more than half of the Earth’s surface. Marine biomes can be divided into three types:

• Oceans: There are 5 oceans in the world: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Southern oceans.

• Coral reefs: 25% of marine animals make coral reefs their home.

• Estuaries: this is where rivers and streams flow into the ocean and where saltwater and freshwater meet.

The marine biome is home to many creatures. Aside from fish, there are also mammals that live in this biome. Since these mammals don’t have gills to help them breathe underwater, they have to go to the surface to breathe. There are also mollusks that have no backbones and soft bodies, like the octopus, squids and oysters.

1. What is the purpose of the author using bullet points?

a. to easily differentiate the types of marine biomesb. to show the problems faced in the marine biomesc. to compare marine biomes to other biomesd. to show how marine biomes were formed

When you exercise, you move your body to stay fit. There are tons of ways to exercise. You can play on the monkey bars, ride a bike, jump rope, or play catch. Exercising helps you maintain your balance.

Exercise

Directions: Decide if each statement in the box is true or false.

Two Types of ExerciseThere are two types of exercise, aerobic, and anaerobic. When you do an aerobic exercise, such as walking, running, swimming, inline skating, jumping rope, playing soccer, dancing, bicycling, or playing hockey, you increase your heart rate and the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the muscles. When you do an anaerobic exercise, such as weight-lifting or push-ups, which involve short bursts of exertion, you build strength and muscle mass.

The Right Way to ExerciseBefore you exercise, it's important to warm up your muscles first. Then you can stretch. When you stretch, you lengthen your muscles gently. Over time, stretching can help you become more flexible! After you finish exercising, you should cool down, too. You can walk around and stretch until your heartbeat slows down. It is important to exercise safely by warming up and cooling down.

BioluminescenceDid you know that some animals can produce their own light? This is called bioluminescence. Fireflies twinkling at night are bioluminescent organisms. Bioluminescence is a chemical reaction. These animals have a special light-producing organ. Fireflies make light in their abdomen. The chemical reaction produces energy. The energy is in the form of photons. The photons create visible light. While fireflies might be the most common example of bioluminescence, there are many animals that have this special feature.

About 80% of bioluminescent creatures live in the world's oceans. They use this ability to survive. Many animals like the anglerfish are able to use their light to find food. The anglerfish has a light on top of its head. The light attracts prey.

Bioluminescence also helps animals reproduce. Some species of mushrooms' light attracts insects. The insects then carry fungal spores to other places where they can reproduce. The glow of fireflies helps them to attract their mates.

Bioluminescence is also used as a defense mechanism. A vampire squid can squirt a glowing cloud to confuse predators. Glowworms use their light to make their predators think they are toxic. Click beetles use their light to make themselves appear larger.

People enjoy seeing bioluminescence in nature. Bioluminescent tours are a big part of the economy in tourist destinations around the world. However, many people don't realize how important this ability is to thesurvival of these animals.

1. How did the author organize the text?

a. by explaining how bioluminescence is important to the economyb. by explaining how bioluminescence helps animals survivec. by explaining how bioluminescence is a problem to the environmentd. by explaining how bioluminescence is helpful for the environment

2. What role do photons play in bioluminescence?

a. they create visible lightb. they attract preyc. they cause a chemical reactiond. they are toxic

3. Explain what bioluminescence is in your own words. Use examples from the text.

Gravity is what helps keep our feet grounded to the Earth and also causes us to fall! Every object is pulling on other objects with a force called gravity. If an object's mass is small, we don't feel its gravity. Earth's mass is large. Its gravity pulls us to the ground. Huge objects, like planets, have strong forces of gravity. Smaller objects, like people or cars, are pulled toward the center of these huge objects. Everything on Earth is pulled toward the planet's center. Gravity is the force that keeps us from floating off into space. We feel the effects of gravity every second of our lives. For example, If you drop an apple, it falls to the floor. Why does this happen? Because of gravity! It is the force that is acting on the apple, and pulling it towards the Earth.

Sir Isaac NewtonSir Isaac Newton was an English scientist. He was the first person to discover that the moon circles Earth because of Earth's gravity. He also learned that gravity pulls all objects toward each other.

Gravity and WeightThe amount of gravity pulling on an object is measured as weight. Strong gravity makes an object heavy. Weak gravity makes it light. Objects fall at the same speed unless other forces act on them.

Your teeth can be found inside your mouth. They are held in the jawbone, and your gums cover both the bone and the teeth. Your teeth have very important roles to play when you eat your food. They help you cut, grasp, tear, and chew your food into small pieces that you can swallow. It would be very hard to eat without your teeth!

Why should you care for your teeth? Since your teeth are very important, you must take care of them. When you eat, tiny bits of food get stuck on your teeth. Plaque is a soft, sticky layer of germs that can form on teeth. Over time, plaque can create cavities and cause your gums to bleed. A cavity is a small hole in the enamel that can weaken your tooth. Cavities can hurt and cause problems.

How should you protect your teeth?Brushing your teeth helps remove plaque, and protects your teeth. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day: in the morning and before you go to bed. If you can, you should brush your teeth after eating meals or sweet snacks to avoid problems like tooth decay, toothache, bleeding gums, and bad breath.

WILDFIRESA wildfire is an uncontrolled fire that occurs in wildland areas. It burns huge areas of land, houses, and trees in just a short span of time. It is also known as wildland fire, forest fire, grass fire, bush fire, or vegetation fire.

Here are some things you can do to protect yourself and your family against wildfires.

Find out if your house is located in a place prone to wildfires. Create a wildfire disaster plan that is known by all members of the family. Everyone should know how to act and respond in cases of wildfires. If your house is surrounded with fire-resistant shrubs and trees, it will protect your home from damages. You can also prepare first aid kit and wildfire disaster supplies like protective clothing.

How to Plan for a Wildfire

It is important that you have proper information about the wildfire that is happening near your house. Stay informed through your local radio and tv station. You should also stay indoors to prevent breathing smoke and fumes that will make you feel dizzy. If you are asked to evacuate, do so immediately.

What to Do During a Wildfire

What to Do After a WildfireEven if it seems safe, do not go near the area of wildfire. Wait for the advice coming from the fire officials. Look out for hazards such as fallen wires and ash pits. Stay alert because the fires could start again.

Most of the time, wildfires have natural causes. There are some cases where wildfires are caused by the carelessness of people in putting out campfires. To prevent wildfires, people should practice fire safety during camping.
