Grade 3 Week 25 Remote Lesson: Mammoths and Mastodons This week in science students will construct an argument that some animals form groups that help members survive. Students will use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment. During the Ice Age, organisms that lived in the colder northern regions were adapted to survive in a colder climate; other animals migrated to warmer southern climates. In order to achieve this goal we will have 3 parts of the lesson. Part One Watch a video of PS Science Instructor Ms. Oyenoki talking about the Ice Age and mammoths, mastodons, and elephants… https://www.dropbox.com/s/zn0v10kenlh4ml1/Ms.%20Oyenoki%203rd%20grade%20mammoths.mp4? dl=0 Study the Elephant Family Comparison Chart on the datasheet below. Part Two Using the information from the video and comparison chart, choose one species from the elephant family and write about their adaptations on Part 2 of the datasheet. How did their adaptations help them to survive? Part Three Print out the world map and ice mask. Cut out the ice mask and glue it onto the top of the world map to make the world look as it did in the Ice Age. What parts of the map are covered in ice? What about Los Angeles? Based on the Elephant Family Comparison chart and information from the video, color and cut out the elephant family species pictures and glue them in the climate zones (polar, temperate, tropical, desert) where you think they would have been best adapted to live. Optionally, you can draw your own mammoths, mastodons, and elephants on the map. *Discussion question: What are some ways that species in the elephant family have evolved over time? How have these changes helped the species survive in the climates where they live?

Using the information from the video and comparison chart, choose one species from the elephant family and write about their adaptations on Part 2 of the datasheet. How did their adaptations help them to survive? Part Three Print out the world map and ice mask. Cut out the ice mask and glue it onto the top of the world map to make the world look as it did in the Ice Age. What parts of the map are covered in ice? What about Los Angeles?
