Grade 12 – Chess Set Project Project Design Brief Objective
To design, produce CAD drawings and create rendered images of a chess set.
Design Criteria Pawn – Rook – Knight – Bishop - King - Queen
The chess set will include the following pieces:
The chess set will also include a standard board. The chess must a consistent design element Software Used Autodesk ImageStudio
Autodesk AliasStudio
Autodesk AutoCAD
Requirements Scaled Sketches (side and top)
Concept Sketches
3D CAD Model Render Images Final Report
Following the concept sketches the design process continues with the creation of scaled sketches including the side and top view of each of the 6 chess pieces. The sketches below are produced to actual size (full scale) on graph paper. Because the pawn, king, queen, rook and bishop are symmetrical only 1 half of the side view is necessary.
The workflow begins with the AutoStudio interface. The interface includes the following: the palette, the menu bar, shelves, the control panel and the window area.
The side view of the rook are cropped and inserted in the right window. The image is moved and aligned with the vertical and horizontal center lines.
The transparency level of the canvas image should be adjusted before creating the CV Curve.
A Polyline Curve is created using the Keypoint Curve ToolBox. The ployline curve follows the profile of the image.
The rook with Diagnostic Shading…
The same process is used to create revolved surfaces for the king, queen, bishop and pawn.
The last step in modeling the rook is removing the 4 cutouts at the top of the revolved surface. This can be completed be used the Trim tool. A new CV Curve is created that follows the profile of the cutout. The CV Curve is extruded through the surface. A line can be used to determine the extrude path. This process is repeated to create and additional extrude surface perpendicular to first extrude. The 3 surfaces are then interested and trimmed. Shelves>Surface>Extrude and Shelves>Surface>Trim
Producing the knight begins with creating the top portion. A CV Curve is created by tracing the profile of the Canvas Image. The CV Curve is copied and rotate from a pivot point. The second CV Curve is then scaled to a smaller profile. This is then repeated to produce a third CV Curve. The 2 smaller CV Curves are then mirrored to produce a symmetrical set of curves.
The Skin tool is used to produce surfaces on the set of CV curves. To create a continuous Skin, hold the shift button until all the CV curves have been selected.
To complete the knight, the bottom portion is revolved with a similar process used to create the other 5 pieces.
