Collection or Hobby DisplayAt Glendale, on the 1st floor, main hallway, as you enter the building, we have a glass display case. I’ve found out that at Glendale we have several residents, staff, families and volunteers that had hobbies and/or collections, that they wanted to show others. This is a great way to help the residents and staff with verbal interaction. I’m sure we have some very talented people, all right under our feet.Glendale’s 1st display is by weekend pool LPN, Rafina. Rafina is very talented with creative hands and fingers. She makes animals and scenes out of eggs. That’s right, her display is called “Egg – Exciting Crafts by Rafina”. Please be sure to take a look at our new display case.

If you’d like to be a part of the display case, please see Randie or give her a call, 215-722-2300 x3044.

Some important doggie info:It is not always true that a cold, moist nose indicates a healthy dog. A normal dog may have a dry nose and a dog with 104 fever, may still have a cold nose. For a more reliable quick appraisal, feel the inside of the dog’s ear or the bare skin of his abdomen-excessive warmth this suggests fever. Better yet, use a rectal thermometer. Remember

all of us know, that’s why we’re us and our resident’s love us! I start getting friendly with people all over the world that will be cruising with me for those fun filled seven nights. We talk, joke, find out who and where everyone comes from, then I’m like a race horse out of the gates…she’s off…I tell them what I do, explain, I’m just like a Cruise Director, not on water, but land. I work with a wonderful population of resident’s ages 50 – 102. I explain that some of these, moms, dads, aunts, uncles. grandmoms and grandpops used to travel, however, not able to. I tell them about the USS Glendale Cruise Ship theme week. I mention about what goes on during our cruise theme week. I tell them how excited the residents enjoy games and prizes. Now all my new made friends that I will and have been cruising with in the past are now planning on bringing items from where they live to add spice from all around the world for our Glendale residents. A big thank you ahead of time goes out to, Frank & Cathy, N.W., Pa, Ruthie & Jon, Bloomington, Il, Darryl & Jessica, N.C., Leanne & Kit, Ireland, Debbie & Dave, Mesa, Az., Carol & Mike, Sunrise, Fla., Diane & Lenny, Glendale, Az., Sue & Bruce, Canada. It’s funny, again, it’s in the Director of Recreation/Volunteer’s blood, we’re on our own vacation, however, we’re always thinking about our residents that we love so much. We couldn’t do without them!

when in doubt, you have a precious 4 legged furry friend that may need further attention. Your vet is only a phone call away. Don’t hesitate making the call.

Recreation NewsBy-Randie Duretz

This, October’s issue of the Glendale Post, was almost completed by the last week in August. (I’m just

waiting for 1 or 2 more articles to flow in) While this issue of the Glendale Post will be distributed, mailed out and sitting pretty on the front receptionist’s desk, I will be cruising on The Oasis of The Seas, one of two of Royal Caribbean’s largest ships. Yes, I’m away on vacation, however Glendale’s 240 resident’s and the Recreation programming are always with me, let me explain. One of Glendale Uptown Home’s biggest weeks, besides National Nursing Home Week is our Cruise Theme Week. Glendale turns into one big cruise ship, The USS Glendale, our very own Love Boat. Just like a real cruise, however, not on water, on land. This fun filled week has been going on for three years, sometimes two times a year. Everything from portholes, anchors, netting, fish are hung up. Passports are made up for each resident, which includes, each day, where and what is going on. Sun visors, sunglasses and leis also given out. The resident council officers, chairperson, the assistant and the two fundraiser, sales people are all sworn in and given rank for this week, with their volunteer job duties. Cities, towns and countries are chosen to where we want to visit. Our days work around the chosen places. Information, movies, trivia and stories are all geared around the above. Dietary has even gotten involved with fun different food, around where we visit. This year it will get bigger, we will not only have 2-3 big programs going on in our big Tyson auditorium, other programs will be going on in the Berkowitz Lounge and possible Library/Computer Lab. Yes, this will work around recreation, staff scheduling. So, that means our residents can pick and choose which program they’d like to join in at that time. They’re passport, directional signs and announcements will be made, with of coarse escorting as needed. I, Randie, Director of Recreation/Volunteers, starts the planning about 5 months in advance. I finalize my vacation cruise plans and then it starts. You know us Director of Recreation people don’t sit still with tape on our lips. Some of you maybe laughing, but

7. My Teenage Years? – I graduated from high school. After high school I went to a business school.8. How I met my boyfriend? – Last boyfriend I met through my daughter. He was my daughter’s friend’s daughter.9. My first date? – I was 16 years old and I went out with my mother’s friend’s son. I had a great time and had plenty of candy.10. Things I remember about my wedding? – We had a wedding at home. My mother catered it. It was very nice.11. Things I remember about my honeymoon? – I got very sick for 4 days, we cut it short and went home.12. My favorite holiday and why? – Passover, because we always had a large dinner with lots of people.13. Some family traditions? – Lighting the candles on our Sabbath. Going to the Synague for prayers.14. How the world has changed? – Prices on everything are sky high. Cars used to be $2,000.00. Homes have gone up in price. My parent’s home new was $5,000.00. My home was $13,900.00.15. My favorite things? – Food, Prime Rib – Color, green – Books, mysteries by James Patterson – Actors, Paul Newman – Actresses, Paul’s wife Joan – Animals, Dogs16. How I’d like to be remembered? – By Ben Frank who was my best friend. And to be remembered, I will be buried next to him. He was a great guy.

Activity PestBy Suzanne Williams – Activity Director, somewhere,

out there, helping seniorsWhy do they come to my door and ask,“Do you want to play Bingo?”No, I’ll pass! Can’t you see I’m trying to sleep? Now leave quietly, without a peep!Who is back the very next day?“Would you like a manicure?”I say, “Okay”.Or I tell her, “Maybe I will on another day.”Ah! She’s gone – there is quiet – all right! Now, it’s just me and The Price Is Right.Knock, knock! Can you guess?Yep! She’s back – the Activity Pest!“We’re having a party. Please won’t you come?“If I go this time, will you leave me alone?”She tries to get me in the moodAnd bribes me with a little food.So I tag along, to this party I go.There are people dancing and what do you know?I’m talking and eating and enjoying the show!I guess these activities aren’t so bad.In fact, the party helped me forget feeling sad.So, if you get a knock on your doorAnd it’s the Pest, try not to ignore.Believe it or not, her intentions are right. To get us out of our roomsAnd into the spotlight.

“Kiley and I…Our Recipe Corner”

by Rosemary & KileyNow that the weather has changed and it’s getting cooler, Kiley and I are back in the kitchen making some fun desserts. With school back in session and the fall upon us, you are seeing apples everywhere, and what smells and tastes better than a fresh cooked apple pie? Well, Kiley and I have something; Glazed Apple Pie Bars. They are simple to make. In fact, when we make them, we make two pans at a time. Kiley makes one for her house and I make one for mine. They make great after school snacks and are delicious hot or cold. Here is what you will need:

CRUST 1 egg separated (reserve egg white) ½ cup of milk 2 ½ cups of all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon of salt 1 cup of cold butter cut into chunks

FILLING1 cup of crushed corn flakes8-10 medium tart apples peeled & sliced1 cup of sugar2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon½ teaspoon of nutmeg1 reserved egg white2 tablespoons of sugarGLAZE

1 cup of powdered sugar½ teaspoon of vanilla1 to 2 tablespoons of milk 15x10x1 inch jelly-roll pan

Heat your oven to 350°. Beat egg yolk in a small bowl. Add the ½ cup of milk and set aside.Combine flour and salt in medium bowl; cut in butter with fork until mixture resembles course crumbs. Stir in egg yolk mixture with fork until dough forms a ball. Divide dough in half. Roll out half of dough on lightly floured surface into a rectangle appx. 15 ½ x 10 ½ inches; place onto the bottom of the ungreased jelly-roll pan. Sprinkle with the crushed corn flakes. Top with the apples.Combine 1 cup of sugar, 1 ½ teaspoons of cinnamon and the nutmeg in small bowl. Sprinkle over apples.

Roll remaining half of dough into the same size rectangle and place over apples. Beat egg white with a fork until foamy, brush over top of crust. Combine remaining cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of sugar in a small bowl and sprinkle over crust. Bake for 45-60 minutes or until light brown. Combine powdered sugar, vanilla and enough milk for desire glazing consistency and drizzle over warm bars.Until the next issue, Kiley and I hope you will try these. We promise you will love them. Happy Baking!!

Some of you maybe laughing, but

out there, helping seniorsWhy do they come to my door and ask,“Do you want to play Bingo?”No, I’ll pass!
