Recipe CornerBrined Chicken with White Sauce

1 cup apple juice 1 cup water 1 tablespoon salt ¼ tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon honey ½ tablespoon dark brown sugar ½ tablespoon soy sauce 1/2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 8 boneless skinless chicken breasts (about 5 oz. each) Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q White Sauce (recipe follows)

Have ready hickory, pecan or oak wood for the grill if desired. White barbecue sauce gives this brined-chicken recipe a different taste and look. In a large bowl, combine apple juice, water, salt, garlic powder, honey, brown sugar, soy sauce and lemon juice. Mix well. Submerge the chicken in the brine. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 1 to 3 hours. Preheat the grill to 400 F. Remove chicken from the brine and wipe off the excess salt, if any. Place the chicken breasts on the grate over direct heat and grill for 5 to 6 minutes per side or until cooked through. The internal temperature of the chicken should be 160 F. Submerge each chicken breast in a bowl of Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q White Sauce. Remove from the sauce and serve. Makes 8 servings.

Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q White Sauce: In a large bowl combine 2 cups mayonnaise, 1 cup white vinegar, ½ cup apple juice, 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish, 2 teaspoons ground black pepper, 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper. Use as a marinade, baste or dipping sauce. Will keep refrigerated in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.

Gene and his 100-straight hat, 5/14/09

The skeet shooters are having another great round of shooting and good times. After week 7 much has changed. Gerald Evatt leads the pack in the most improved category. Good job Gerald.

Gene Stewart, Donny Penwell and Benny Emmons are the three high over all shooters out of 350 targets thrown Gene has broken 343, Donny 340 and Benny 339. WOW what a race. I wonder who will walk away with top honors here?

Gene, Donny, Benny and Kerry Williams also have the most straights. Gene has 7 and the others have 6 each. Another great race going on here too. In the straight department and on the lighter side, on May 14, Gene Wills ran 50 straight and just would not quit. Team 9 (Claybusters) and Team 8 (Improved Cylinders) were battling it out. Gene’s team 9 shot first and Gene got his 50 straight. Actually it was 75 straight because he finished the previous week with one straight. Now Gene has 75 straight and the adrenalin is flowing. He asked Team 8 captain, Robert Nicholas, about shooting with them to see how far he can take the straight string. Nicholas agrees and the race is on. Sure enough the next 50 Gene did not miss and now he is on 125 and still going. Don Yeandle is now pushing Gene and saying “see how many more you can do.” Gene was beginning to get tired and the more Don pushed the more aggressive Gene got. Other members from team 8 encouraged Gene to quit while he was on roll. But nothing doing, no quit in Gene. Onward he went until target number 156 before he fell off. We were lucky enough to have someone on the field with a camera to capture the 100 straight cap shoot and signing ceremony. Gene was also prepared for the signing too. He brought his own Sharpie Chisel point marking pen, which works very well for cap signing ceremonies. Check out the photos of Gene and the party. G O O D J O B, Gene!!!!!!!!!!!! When you see Gene, pick on him a little bit for not quitting while he was ahead.

Sporting Clays ShootMay 17, 2009

No witty remarks this time around, need to take it easy on space with all the updates I have to cover. We had 27 members & 4 guests that came out to shoot, weather was great and the targets were tough but enjoyable. We paid out $580 in prizes to the winners. We threw exactly 104 rounds of targets for a total of $409 revenue to the club as well as a great lunch provided by Bob Hinze. He was kind enough to donate about half of the lunch so the extra lunch money collected went straight back to the clubs food supply fund, be sure to thank him for his kind gesture. Brad Burnette has volunteered to handle lunch for the next shoot on July 19. We will be skipping the June shoot in observance of Father’s Day. Here are the results:

If you have free time on the weekends, are familiar with skeet shooting and wouldn’t mind making some extra money, this may be for you. The Texas Skeet Shooters Association is looking for referees to staff the registered skeet shoots and will conduct a clinic for new personnel to become familiar with the rules and requirements of being a registered referee. If you are interested or have a son or daughter (min. age 18) who may be interested, please contact Allen Cline at [email protected]. Allen is the Chief Referee for the State of Texas and is a member of the Fort Worth Trap and Skeet Club. The clinic will be held at one of the area gun clubs and will be determined by Allen. Having local referees will help the local shoots with hotel expenses they incur with bringing in out of town referees. The intent is to bring new people into the game that are local. This notice will go out in all local area Club’s publications (Arlington Sportsman Club, Dallas Gun Club, Ellis County Sportsmans Club, Fort Worth Trap & Skeet, Grand Prairie Gun Club and Terrell Rifle & Pistol Club). Please contact Allen Cline if this something you or someone you know may be interested in. Thanks.

GPGC members we have the re-claimed lead shot for sale again. The first order sold out fairly quickly so we doubled our order this time. Response from reloaders has been positive. They increased our cost 1.25 a bag for shipping so we raised the price a dollar to $19 a bag. Please contact Bill Schweitzer, Randy Walhood or Jeff Zwiebel to purchase shot.

Lewis Class 1-1: Jason Foshea Lewis Class 1-2: Dwight Sensabaugh

Lewis Class 2-1: Donny Penwell Lewis Class 2-2: Jason Davidson

Jason Foshea won the scratch purse, I've always wanted a purse WHEN IT'S MADE OF MONEY! THE NEW LEAGUE??? What's it gonna be and when do we start it? OK, glad you asked, I'll tell ya. Robert Nicholas & Jason Foshea are going to set up an IRONMAN LEAGUE consisting of 3 weeks of sporting clays, 3 weeks of skeet, and 3 weeks of trap. ALL shooting disciplines will be handicapped and awards will be paid out using lewis class scoring system. Starting on June 8, 2009 we will start with our 3 weeks of sporting clays followed by 3 weeks of skeet and trap. If it's too hard to get 50 skeet & 50 trap shot in 1 night for everyone we'll move the trap out to weeks 7-9. We're going to start off with the attempt of having the league lasting 6 weeks, if it seems like time won't allow it we'll change it to a 9 week league. PLEASE SIGN UP FOR THIS LEAGUE, it will actually help us in the planning knowing how many we'll have participating. Since the sporting clays targets WILL be changed from week to week we will go ahead and set the course on week 4 for any make ups that missed a week, if you are absent for a night don't sweat it just shoot your make up round on week 4. Skeet & trap scores can be made up any time. We'll have a minimum of 5 or a maximum of 6 shooters per lewis class and payout will be 60/40 for 1st and second in the class. The more shooters we have, the more classes we'll have. I'll put a sign up sheet in the office at the clubhouse so people can start signing up. Any stragglers showing up the 1st night will be welcome to join. So, any bets who the the club IRONMAN/ WOMAN may be? Yea, Deb is planning on shooting so watch out guys!

Other little odds & ends:

gun club members, friends, family members, and even some customers I was able to raise $2486 to help these guys get their organization of the ground. THANK YOU for everyone's help. It's not too late if interested in helping them out, please feel free to contact me directly if intrested in contributing to a completely politics free organization trying to help out some of our wounded war vets that have served our country.

Don't forget about the Club Board of Directors election, like the democrats always say: "vote early and vote often"...

Take care and see ya around the club. Jason

The last beginner skeet class for the 2009 season ended on May 26, 2009 and was a huge success. At one time 22 people were participating in the program and many commented about having a good time and learning much. They were appreciative that GPGC created an opportunity for them to learn skeet at a slow pace and very reasonable price. Terry Cullender and Bill Schwietzer put this program together and they do have a knack for creating a fun and excitement. Instructors helping add dimension to the program were Debra Altembaumer and Van Elliott. Gene Wills and Don Yeandle put in guest appearances to help cover when one of the regulars had to be absent.

Some quotes from people who participated are:

From M. McCain: Any unbroken clays are purely mine,

for I didn’t find the time to practice between classes. I feel confident I can improve my scores with the knowledge acquired from this class.

From B. BurnettI personally have had the luxury of

shooting with multiple Instructors over the past few months. Each one does something a little bit different. I found this to be extremely beneficial. It gave me varied options

David Berling, Gary Jones, Terry Cullender & Brett Barnett

about having a good time and learning much. They were appreciative that

to try out to see what actually fit ME and my way of shooting.

For the walking in “Blind” Shooter, I think there are several things that can boost their ego and performance. The first two that come to mind: 1. Learning Gun Fit (I never knew there was such a thing).

2. Shooting with complete strangers that will end up being future shooting buddies and losing the fear of being on the field with other people.

From Jeannie When asked about a small orange clay pin displayed on her carry bag she said, “Debra had an award ceremony for me because I was doing well and beginning to

break targets. How exciting it was and this pin is my award. I really had a good time.”

Thanks for your support and interest in GPGC and the programs made available. We look forward to assisting anyone

interested in shooting skeet to get off to a

good start. There are many excellent skeet shooters in the club who will help you or direct you to someone who will. Shoot well, have fun and break ‘em all, if you can!

Bullseye matches are held every Wednesday at 6:00PM. Any caliber or action allowed except magnums, please. We shoot 3 rounds of 10 shots in slow fire, timed fire and rapid fire. The participation is normally 10 to 15 shooters with 4 or 5 being women. The match costs $5 and members and guests are welcome. When Dan started this match up several years ago the turnout was two or three people and the scores were much lower but now that the silhouette match has draw so much interest the bullseye has grown since it is such a good practice for long range accurate shooting. I am shooting very good scores and am very happy with my performance and I am coming in 7th or 8th. Come out and shoot with us. We have good competition and a very good social group of people that enjoy shooting with and helping each other. I have made over a dozen new friends since I have been shooting this event and the level of fun is high. Any questions, contact:

Board of Directors RaceMy name is Jim Wilson. Most of you have seen

me at the pistol and rifle range. Coming up in a few weeks we will have elections to select our officers for the next term. I am asking for your vote to represent the pistol range activities. I personally feel the pistol range has been revitalized by hard work from our club members. It is my intent to continue with improvements to keep the pistol range safe clean and a range to be proud of. My wife and I have four kids, nine grandkids, and one great granddaughter. I attended El Centro Junior College, and enjoyed a 40+ year career in Data Processing, currently called Information Technology. I appreciate your consideration and vote for the Pistol committee. Thanks, Jim

I just wanted to write a couple of paragraphs to introduce myself. My name is Jim Hundley and you probably have seen me around the club or shooting my rifles down at the range. There will be an election of officers coming up in a few weeks and I am throwing my “hat into the ring” for a spot on the rifle range committee. I am not going to make you rifle shooters a bunch of promises, because I don’t know at this time what you, the shooters, want to do. I can tell you, however, that I am very serious in making and keeping the range SAFE, clean, and well maintained. I would like to get the target brackets in good shape again, provide decent shooting stools, etc. In the near future, hold a few shooting competitions. My

goal for the range is to make it a friendly, neighborly place where every shooter leaves the range a little better than the way he found it. An atmosphere where people can get help or advice if needed. I guess what I am trying to say is that I would be your representative to the board. I would be open to your ideas and

together we could make things happen. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I received my degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. I work in the workman’s compensation department of Argonaut Insurance company. I have lived in Arlington, Texas for seven years and been a member of GPGC for as long. I love to pull the trigger on anything that goes bang and is accurate. I participate in benchrest competition and love to hunt and fish. I would appreciate your vote. Thanks, Jim

I’ve been a member of GPGC since 2007 and became a range officer as of 2009. I currently run the clubs monthly sporting clays shoots (3rd Sunday of every month) & the Monday night sporting clays/ 5-stand league. My goals are to continue to bring a variety of shotgun sports to the club as well as maintain the integrity of our skeet, trap, rifle & pistol shooting. I believe that GPGC is successful due to the members and the pride they take in ownership of the club. I look forward to the opportunity to serve and help GPGC remain one of the best gun clubs around.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jason Foshea

Board of Directors Race

Dan Brown is running for Pistol Director for GPGC Pistol Director on the GPGC Board of Directors and would appreciate your vote. He is 73 years old, semi retired Physicist, resides in Grand Prairie about 3/4 mile from the club, and has been a club member since 1970. He has served on the GPGC BOD 1992-1994 and on the GPSDC Board 2001-2003. His hobbies include classical music, hunting, shooting, and fishing. He wrote the SOP for the pistol & rifle ranges in 1992, shot in and sometimes ran bullseye and silhouette pistol matches 1990-2002. He restarted and ran the bullseye pistol matches since June 2007 and restarted and ran the metallic pistol silhouette matches since June 2008.

Dan serves as Match Director for the Pistol Committee. His plans for GPGC are as follows:

Refurbish the metal pistol backstop;• Expand the pistol & rifle ranges to 24 shooting • lanes each;Get the 25 yard sight-in range set up and • operational;Explore possibilities of large caliber pistol • metallic shooting, andExplore future rifle & pistol shooting games.•

Thanks, Dan Brown

Dale Holder is running for Pistol Director on the GPGC Board of Directors and would appreciate having your vote. He is 53 years old, resides and owns his own business, 3D Welding of Texas, in Irving. He has 30 years of experience in the construction and welding industries in the DFW Metroplex. When asked why Dale wanted to run for the Board he stated with his love of shooting and his business experience he could make a significant contribution to the club. He has some unique ideas about how to raise money and complete projects around the club. Many things that happen around the club require leadership and people skills which Dale has. He is accustomed to listening to other people’s ideas, making suggestions and making finished products without delay. GPGC is always in need of these skills because of the variety of activities that happen. Dale is currently Chairman of the Pistol Planning Committee and is probably better known around the club as the man who came up with an idea to rid the club of the wild hog problem. Plus, he has done a marvelous job of helping Debbie, his wife of ten years and a novice shooter, get started shooting by taking the beginning skeet clinic. They plan to make shooting at GPGC a family sport and encourage others to participate in family oriented shooting activities.

We had 12 shooters compete today, and the winners were Dale Holder with a 59/60 for scoped pistols, and Mike Smith with a 57/60 for iron sights. Shooters today were Floyd Jester - 40/60, Jim Wilson - 47/60, Michael Gelgor with 31/60, Dean Westerman with 19/60, Clint Freeman with 44/60, Harry Hettinger with 29/60, Gary Castelano with 40/60, Jim Grabbe with 54/70, Mike Smith with 57/60, Dale Holder with 59/60, Terry Cullender with 47/60, and Dan Brown with 48/60. It is more of a challenge than one thinks to hit these steel targets, at from 15 yards for the small chickens, to the larger pigs at 50 yards. Getting the elevation right is a key items in being able to knock these targets down.
