Dear Fellow Lions, Lion Mary Lou and I have just recently returned from the International Convention in Chicago where we had the opportunity to be introduced to our incoming International President Mahendra Amarasuriya and his wife Kushi. Mahendra’s message of “Challenge to Change” brings a new prospective on Lionism and our future. His strong leadership and foresight has inspired me to go forth and empower others. This Lions year we will all be confronted with old and new challenges. It will be up to each of us, as Lions, to find within ourselves the strength and determination to overcome these challenges. The District Cabinet and Committee Chairpersons have dedicated their time and resources to assist you. Please contact them directly if you need help in the development or execution of your goals and objectives. Region and Zone Chairpersons will be working closely with their respective clubs to achieve our “Team” approach in our effort to meet the chal- lenge of change. All club reports including committee assignments, club goals and membership growth plan should be forwarded to the District Governor, Cabinet Secretary, Region and Zone Chairpersons. The first round of Region Meetings will be held in August. Please be prompt in returning your registration for meals and attendance. Club Presidents, encourage your membership to attend and be recognized as a club with a mission to change by participating, communicating and having fun. It’s a great time to meet other Lions and share ideas .....good, bad or indifferent. There will be a Presidents and Secretaries meet- ing at 6:00pm. Lions Clubs International Convention News Submitted by Lion Alton Miller, District 24-D Public Relations

Lions Clubs International held their 90th Convention in Chicago, Illinois July 2-6, 2007. During the course of business, Lion MahendraAmarasuriya of Sri Lanka was elected to serve as President of the organization and Virginia Lion Wayne Davis was elected an InternationalDirector.

There were four resolutions adopted: The first was an important change to the LCI Constitution and By-Laws stating that of the mandat-ed 34 International Directors, the constitutional area including the United States of America and its affiliates, Bermuda and the Bahamas isentitled to only 14 Directors. The second reduced the dues by one-half for “Student Friendly Clubs and Campus Clubs”. The third stated:“The International Board of Directors shall provide for an annual audit of the books and accounts of the association by Certified PublicAccountants”. The fourth resolution redefined “the role and responsibilities of the district governor, vice district governor, region chairper-son and zone chairperson”.

The 91st LCI Convention will be held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Pin Trading: Limited Quantities &Higher Prices Are Not Good

When a club or an individual makes a decision to issue a limitedquantity pin, that decision hurts a lot of folks in Lionism. You maybe saying, “What in the World is he talking about?” I’m talking aboutthose little things called “friendship pins”, or as some call them “trad-ing pins”. Okay, what’s the big deal?? Recently there has been atrend in our District and others throughout Virginia to try and createa “hard-to-get” pin that might possibly bring big dividends to theissuing club or individual. If the “normal” quantity is 150 pins toaccommodate those who collect every pin that is issued in the Stateand the decision is to make only 100, this is considered to be a limit-ed issue. The actual result is that limited quantity pins are beginningto have such an adverse impact on a wonderful hobby that some oth-erwise enthusiastic pin traders are now considering getting out ofcollecting Virginia pins. If this happens and continues to happen, alot of clubs are going to find that what they thought was an unlimit-ed source for a demand for their pins will disappear also.

Another trend that is disturbing is the pricing of pins. LionsClubs International (LCI) very clearly advises that a newly issued pin, unless it is specifically intended as a fund-raiser, can only be sold forwhat it cost plus a reasonable processing fee. The processing fee isdefined as what it costs in terms of postage and packing to distributethe pins. An example would be that if a pin cost $1.85 and you haveto mail it in a mailer, a processing fee could be justified that wouldcause the pin to be offered for $2.25. Selling this pin for $4.00 or$5.00 merely to provide a profit for the seller is just NOT right. Infact, it is considered gouging your fellow Lions.

I mentioned selling a pin as a fund-raiser. While it is recognizedthat selling so-called trading pins for the purpose of raising funds fora charitable cause is a given these days, it should be clearly under-stood and advertised what the purpose of the pin is when it isoffered. In that way there should be no misunderstanding as to whythe pin is being offered at such a high price. Several districts andclubs are presently selling special pins to help raise funds for theongoing SightFirst II campaign and you will find that the prices beingasked are considerably higher than what you might expect.

Within Lionism there are thousands of people who collect tradingpins. The revenues that LCI gets from the sale of these pins helps ina big way to keep our dues at an acceptable level. In this connection,LCI has authorized a limited number of manufacturers to make pinsusing the registered logo of LCI. This list of authorized pin makersis available from the Club Supplies Division at LCI. All Lions clubsand individual Lions should always help LCI protect their logo bypurchasing them only from these authorized pin makers.

In Virginia we have one of the most enthusiastic groups oftraders in all of Lionism. There are roughly 100 Lions and Lionessesin Virginia who try their best to collect every pin that is issued withinour State. Many of them also collect pins that are issued all over theWorld of Lionism. Within this group are some of the most dedicat-ed Lions and Lionesses who are involved in almost every aspect ofLionism, from the very top levels of leadership to the newest levelswithin our clubs. It is extremely important that we all work togetherand avoid those pitfalls that I have mentioned in this brief article. Todo otherwise will hurt a lot of folks in Lionism.

Lion Al Spruill, District Pin Trader Chairman

(Editor’s Note: In submitting this article for publication, Lion Alindicated that several Lions in Virginia composed it.)

Youth Exchange Students Treated to Picnic—Submitted by Lion Al Miller

A District 24-D Youth Exchange picnic was held at Lion Steve and Lynne Winter’s beautiful water-front home on July 8, 2007. Youth Exchange & Camp Chairman Lion Jeff Jacobs, Co-Chairman LionChip Dodson, Host Family Coordinator Lion Pat Morrell, Lions, youth and their host families attendedthe picnic.

The Lions Youth Exchange Program is an excellent way to promote friendship and understanding inthe World. Won’t you consider hosting or sponsoring a youth in next year’s program? It only involveshosting a youth on an average of 2 to 3 weeks in July and August. You may contact Lion Pat Morrell at

757-930-3299. Clubs can contribute to this Program by donating funds to cover the expenses for activities. There are many ways to help.Let’s keep this important Program going; it could help the cause of World peace.

Traveling Leo UpdateThere have been a few changes in the rules for this years contest. The new rules were distributed to each club at the final District meeting

in June. In addition to new Base Points for different club sizes, there is a new addition in points to be earned. This is the Excess Mileage cat-egory that provides for an additional 20 points for a club that visits another club more than 50 miles, one way, from where their club meets. The purpose is to encourage visits to clubs that seldom get visited. Visits to the Eastern Shore clubs still earn 25 points regardless of distance. However, excess mileage points cannot be claimed in addition to the Crossing Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel points for the same visit.

Good luck and Good Traveling!!

Mathews Lions Club News–by Donald C. Mikulecky, Corresponding Secretary

From Left to Right: Sandy Mikulecky, Edwina Casey, Don Mikulecky, Ralph Johnson, Bob Yard, Bill Hauser, Bill Hutson, Tom Edwards, RitaEngle, Gerald Jones, Ben Thompson and Kemp Parish. In foreground, District Governor Chet Kramer

Mathews Lions Club installed its new officers for the 2007-2008 year on July 10, 2007. District 24-D Governor Chet Kramer and his part-ner, Lion Mary Lou Newman came to install the new officers: President, Sandy Mikulecky; First Vice President, Edwina Casey; Second VicePresident, Kemp Parrish; Secretary, Ben Thompson; Treasurer, Gerald Jones; Membership Director, Rita Engle; Tail Twister, Bill Hauser;Lion Tamer, Bill Hutson; and Corresponding Secretary, Don Mikulecky; Directors: Two Year: Ann Pinkerton, Hap Kinsley, and Robert Yard; One Year: Tom Edwards, Spencer Hodges, Jr. and Ralph Johnson.

In addition, awards were given to recognize people whose service was noteworthy during the preceding year. Three categories of awardswere given. The first, Lion of the Year, was to Sandy and Don Mikulecky. The second, the prestigious Melvin Jones Award, went to fourpeople: Edwina Casey, Millie Aldrich, Hap Kinsley and Mark Lauer. Finally, the very special Lions of Virginia Foundation Award was given

to Johnny Horner. The picture at left by Charles Koenig appeared in the July 5th Gloucester Mathews Gazette-Journal. The

caption reads: “Millie Aldrich of the Mathews Lions Club is all smiles , in spite of her crabby hat, atSaturday’s Gwynn’s Island Festival. The Lions Club was one of several oeganizations providing somegood, old-fashioned home cooking for visitors to the annual event.”

The Gwynn’s Island Festival is one of a number of Festivals where the Mathews Lions Club sells food toraise funds for its charitable activities.

On June 26 John Raymond Bassett spoke to the Mathews Lions Club regarding his successful training andappointment as a Fire Fighter/Emergency Medical Technician I after restoration of his hearing by two cochlearimplants. The first implant was obtained with financial and other help from the Mathews Lions and Lions

International Charity Foundation because his medical insurance made the cost prohibitive for him. A few years later, after his insuranceprovider changed their policies, a second implant was obtained and he met the requirements for the training program he wanted so much tocomplete.

From January to May of 2007 he received his EMTB and EMTI certification at the State andNational levels. In September he will start his training with the Fire Academy and will receive train-ing through December. Meanwhile he is working with the medical unit as an EMT I at Station I inNewport News. His goal is to become a Paramedic. He is now also a member of the MathewsVolunteer Rescue Squad.

When he spoke to the Mathews Lions, many teary eyes appeared among the Club members as hemade clear the tremendous impact their work had on his life in general and his career goals in par-ticular. Most of the work of the Mathews Lions Club directly benefits the Mathews community. Itis rewarding to see a vivid example of how much the lives of others are affected as we live theLions International motto: “We Serve.”
