Gail lives here in Gorham. She has a Bachelors Degree in Communications and a Masters Degree in Adult and Higher Education from the University of Southern Maine. Since 2006 she has been the Administrative Assistant here at Gorham Recreation where she “juggles a variety of cats,” from program registrations,

data base management and communcations, to facility scheduling, community events, and adult programming. Gail also teaches the classroom portion of our Counselor in Training program, Babysitter Training and Red Cross First Aid. Prior to coming to Gorham Recreation Gail was the Manager of Promotions, Events and Community Outreach for Michael’s craft store in Rockwall, TX. She also has many years of expereince in the arts as craft show promoter, freelance writer, and web designer.

If Gail had a super power it would be . . .the ability to heal. Cancer, Alzheimer’s - and even the common cold - would be history!

Meet Team Gorham Recreation Behn is a resident of Limington, ME and began at Gorham Recreation in May of 2014. He is the Facilities Coordinator/Programmer here, taking care of the Little Falls Rec Area, Shaw Park, Robie Field, Village Fields, as well as Robie Gym, Shaw Gym, Old Robie School, and eventually Little Falls

School. He will also be taking over the Ski Program this winter. Behn has a Bachelors Degree in History from the University of Southern Maine. Since 2008, he has worked at Spring Harbor Hospital as a Psych Tech on the Children’s unit, and worked in education for three years as an Ed Tech and then as a Long Term Substitute, before deciding to pursue a different career opportunity here at Gorham Recreation. He also has 10 years experience in recreation, working for Standish Recreation as both a counselor and eventually as a Director of their summer camps. Behn currently is coaching Varsity football as a Defensive Line/Offensive Line coach at Bonny Eagle High School, and has been there since 2008.

If Behn had a super power it would be . . . flying. He could get places much faster, and would have some cool scenery to look at!

Cindy Hazelton has been leading Team Gorham Recreation since 1991. She has a BS Degree in Recreation and Leisure Services from the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Cindy is a Certified Parks and Rccreation Professional with the National Recreation and Park Association. She is a native of Aroostook County and loves all things

Jimmy Buffett. Cindy has been recognized by local organizations including the Gorham-Westbrook Rotary Club and is a Paul Harris Fellow; the Gorham Grange; the Gorham Lions Club; the Gorham Business Exchange and was their Business Person of the Year. She is a past president of Maine Recreation and Park Association and was named the Maine Recreation and Park Association Distinguished Professional of the Year in 2003.

If Cindy had a super power it would be . . the ability to live life like a song... a Jimmy Buffett song!

Mike is the Youth & Adult Sports Director/Community Events Coordinator at Gorham Recreation. He joined Gorham Recreation in May 2014 and is responsible for youth and adult sports

including scheduling, budget preparation, and volunteer recruiting.

Mike has a BS in Business and an MBA Sport Management. He has been working in the field of recreation for 10 years.

If Mike had a super power it would be . . . the ability to make children laugh ( and stop crying) when ever he wanted!

Julio is the Director of Before and After School and Summer Camp Programs. He has an Assiociate Degree in Parks and Recreation Managment and Bachelors Degree in Child and Family Studies. He has been in the “Recreation game” going on fifteen years, between three different states. Julio has spent eight of those fifteen years here in the Town of Gorham. He has also been on the coaching staff of the

Univesity of Southern Maine wrestling team for the past nine years. Julio is an avid cartoon watcher, fun fact collector, and electronics tinker.

If Julio had a super power it would be . . . the ability to teleport himself and his friends and family to anywhere in the known universe at anytime, because somedays you just want to lunch in the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji - and it should be possible.

What is Public Access Television? The short answer is it is citizen media! The Town of Gorham has negotiated a cable franchise agreement with a Cable Television Provider. In Gorham’s case that is Time Warner Cable. Federal law allows the town to require the cable provider to offer “public, educational, or government” (PEG) access channels.

Gorham has 2 PEG channels. Channel 2, GOCAT serves the community interest while Channel 3, GGETV serves the town and school department. Gorham Community Access Television (GOCAT) is a free communication resource available for the citizens of Gorham. GOCATand Gorham Government, Education Television (GGETV) are only broadcast to residents in Gorhamwho have cable access, providing information about what is happening in our neighborhoods, ourschools, and our town office. Camara operators and video editors needed!

GoCat provide a 24-hour electronic bulletin board system to let the community know what ishappening in Gorham and surrounding areas. We record and broadcast many school andcommunity, arts and entertainment events such as concerts and plays. We provide sports coverageat Gorham High School and U.S.M. We record special events, such as New Year Gorham, Parades, and Gorham Marketplace. We produce studio talk shows on a variety of issues. We also offer open studio space for you to come in to edit, design, and ask questions. Call us at 222-1641 to schedule atime that works for you!

Thank you to our 2014 Youth Coaches!Gorham Recreation Department extends a sincere thank you to the GHS Girls Basketball , GHS Softball and GHS Baseball teams and all of our Volunteer Coaches and Assistants!

    Importance of Volunteer Coaches

“Being an expert in a particular sport isn’t necessarily what makes a great coach. A coach’s willingness to provide a positive environment for young children to learn about friendship, teamwork, and sport is the foundation for their ongoing willingness to play. Winning does not have to be the focus for young children. The love of the game can be fostered through other outlets as children work to improve their skills.

Practice sessions that are fun and skill-based far outweigh the benefits of competitive game play for young children. Taking the time to foster friendships and build individual skills cooperatively will lead to success in the game later on.

Whether you have experience in a particular sport or not, I encourage you to get involved in coaching youth sports. The bonding experience between you and your child can last a lifetime, and the impact that you can have on providing positive and healthy opportunities for children through sport is immeasurable. “

Get Wet: 6 months - 3 years oldGet Wet is a parent and child class for children three years of age and younger (exceptions are made for older children). Our Man in Havana

Set in pre-communist Cuba, Our Man in Havana tells the tale of a bumbling vacuum cleaner salesman unwittingly recruited by the British secret service to be a spy. The only problem is he doesn’t know anything ! He invents a network of fictitious contacts and dispatches diagrams of vacuum-cleaner parts as classified information.

Adapted from Graham Greene’s novel for the stage by Clive Francis, this lively, tongue-in-cheek production conjures 1950s Cuba onstage, a volatile place, with decadence, corruption and espionage on every street corner. Cleverly choreographed, four actors change accents and costumes to play over 30 eclectic characters. Reviewers have called it “Fast, Furious and Funny!”Depart 1:00pm Return by 5:00pmThursday Feb 12$35

The lives of two families collide around a company CEO and a man building a wooden ark in his yard. It is a revealing drama about family, loyalty, and the quiet tragedies of mill-town life.

This is Wood’s first play, although she is the author of four works of fiction, most recently “Any Bitter Thing”, and “When We WereThe Kennedy’s” which have recieved critical acclaim.

    Wreaths Across America 2014

Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Maine, was a 12 year old paper boy for the Bangor Daily News when he won a trip to Washington D.C. His first trip to our nation’s capital was one he would never forget, and Arlington National Cemetery made an especially indelible impression on him. This experience followed him throughout his life and successful career in business, reminding him that his good fortune was due, in large part, to the values of this nation and the Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their Country. In 1992, Worcester Wreath found themselves with a surplus of wreaths nearing the end of the holiday season. Remembering his boyhood experience at Arlington, Worcester realized he had an opportunity to honor our country’s Veterans. With the help of Maine Senator Olympia

Snowe, arrangements were made for the wreaths to be placed at Arlington in one of the older sections of the cemetery, a section which had been receiving fewer visitors with each passing year.

The wreath laying is still held annually, on the second or third Saturday of December. Their annual pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine to Arlington National Cemetery has become known as the world’s largest veteran’s parade, stopping at schools, monuments, veteran’s homes and communities all along the way to remind people how important it is to remember, honor and teach.

2014 is the 150 anniversary of Arlington National Cemetery. Would you like to be part of this event and feel the outpouring of caring associated with it? Sign up today!
