The professor decided there was no reason to waste any more time on this class, so instead he slapped his notes together, stopped lecturing, picked up a piece of chalk, went to the chalk board and drew a giant arrow pointing straight down, stood back, and said: “If you understand that, you understand everything you need to know about what it means to be a Christian.” And then he left the room. She writes about how the class sat there, staring at the enormous arrow pointing straight down. And the thought going through her mind, given what had just happened in the classroom, was that this professor thinks everyone is going to hell. When the class met the following week, he began by drawing that arrow on the board. He had everyone's attention. And this is what he said: “God always comes down. And God still comes down, in the bread and in the wine, in the water and in the fellowship of believers. God ALWAYS comes down. This idea of God coming down, of God coming to us, was rooted in Scripture all along, but rediscovered by Martin Luther. Ephesians 2:8-9 is that foundational verse of the Reformation: "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God – not the result of works, so that no one may boast." And in Philippians 2:7-8 we read that Christ humbled himself (he came down) to bring us that grace. This idea that God comes down to us, not the other way around, is the foundation of the Christian faith. In her book “Reclaiming the ‘L’ Word,” Pastor Kelly Fryer, whose book helps lead us back to our Lutheran roots, tells about a beautiful day on the seminary campus during her first year in seminary when she sat with her classmates listening to a lecture about some “long-dead theologian." “I was bored,” she writes, and it appeared that the professor was realizing that not only was Kelly bored but the entire class seemed to be bored and not listening at all. Dear Congregation,

Making children alert and teaching them what

to do in the case of attempted abduction is best

enacted as a partnership between the school,

the police and parents. Just as the police teach

children how to stop, look and listen before

crossing the street, we now need to teach them

how not to be abducted. This is our new

normal.

I believe it is important to teach children how

to avoid being seized, how to resist a potential

captor and how to escape. Kids are vulnerable

and trusting, and it is our job as parents to

remind them of basic safety rules, including:

1. Don’t walk away with anyone other than a

parent, or the person who was already arranged

to take care of you that day.

2. Remember, an adult does not need help from

a child — not to find a puppy, not for anything.

If an adult is asking you for help, that’s a

warning sign.

3. Avoid getting into a car with a stranger at all

costs.

4. Know the rules: what is OK and what is not

OK, and have confidence to take action if you

feel someone is trying to take advantage of

you.

The most important thing parents can do is to

communicate openly with their children at

home. Have a home atmosphere in which kids

can let you know what is going on in their life.

A very important point is to re-learn old

concepts of adult/children interaction. Teach

your child his rights. He has the right to say

“no.” Children should know there are different

rules for different situations; they don’t have to

always be polite. Politeness can translate into

doing what the potential abductor says.

Teach Your Child to Avoid Being Taken

In any potential abduction situation, there are

windows of opportunity for the child to make

choices that could save his or her life.

Abductors win through intimidation, so it is

very important to give your child good self-

esteem and the confidence to carry through

these possibly life-saving techniques. Consider

practicing these techniques at home or school,

with other parents and kids. The more kids

practice, the more they will remember these

techniques, and the more secure and confident

they will feel in following through if they ever

have to.

1. The Velcro technique — Make like Velcro:

Grab and hold onto something and do not let

go. Grab a tree, grab a bike, grab a stop sign

post, or even grab a different adult, because

another adult is not usually involved in an

abduction. This makes it harder to disengage a

child in an attempted abduction.

2. Yell as loud as you can “Stop, Stranger!” —

Teach your child that anyone that is not a

mother or father is in the new definition of a

stranger if they are trying to take you away.

3. Windmill technique or swimming technique

— Rotate arms in a big circle, preventing

attacker from getting a good grip. This can turn

attackers arms inside out — which is a weaker

position from which he could grab hold of the

child.

4. Make a lot of noise — Give a child a whistle

on a necklace and teach them to blow on that

whistle when they might be in danger. Bang on

something, scream, be loud to call attention

from others who might be able to help. A good

commotion can frighten an abductor and by

shifting the balance of power, turn the tables

on them.

September 6th Confirmation Guide Orientation

Service: Sunday School Bir thday Cards

September 13th Confirmation Parent/Student Orientation

Confirmation

Another year of confirmation has officially

come to a close. 15 students affirmed their

baptism on May 7th. We also have two

great classes of 6th and 7th graders for a

total of 37 students who worked hard over

the last year. They memorized the Apostles

Creed, participated in community service

and learned about tough topics using the

re:Form Curriculum. Although we have

enjoyed the re:From Curriculum over the

last few year, feedback from students and

confirmation guides has led me to

reconsider the curriculum. Having used

Echo the Story in the past, I looked into this

option and found they have created an

extended curriculum. The original version

we used had 12 sessions making it not

feasible for us to use on its own. The

updated curriculum has a total of 36

lessons, which will fit perfectly with our 3

year confirmation program. I am looking

forward to reviewing this program over the

summer and getting things set up for use in

the fall.

Confirmation registration will be available

online soon. Parent of returning

confirmation students, please watch your

inboxes for a link to sign up. Families of

new 6th graders will receive a letter in the

mail with a paper registration and

information on how to register online.

Please contact me if you have any questions

about registering for the 2017-2018

confirmation year. Parent/Student

orientation will kick off the new

Confirmation year on September 13th.

High School youth

In case you missed the announcement in

church or the bulletin, Youth Group meets

all summer long! Youth Group meets in the

youth room (off the Mattes Center) every

Wednesday from 6 - 8pm for bible studies,

fellowship and service (see schedule for

specifics). All high school age students are

welcome to attend. Students are encouraged

to attend when they can, but weekly

attendance is not required. Talk to

Stephanie with any questions.

We are ramping up for our mission trip to

Cincinnati, OH July 23-28th. If your child is

attending the mission trip, please make

every effort to attend our meeting on June

7th 6:30 - 7:30pm. We will go over

important trip expectations and details.

Also, final paperwork and insurance cards

are due at that time.

“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its

leaves, you know that summer is near.” Matthew 24:32

Calling all Musicians! Summer is here! And, with most of the musical ensembles at Good Shepherd adjourned for the summer months, the need for people to share their talents in the form of special music offerings is particularly great. Therefore, it is with great joy and anticipation that we extend our sincere invitation to anyone and everyone who would like to share their musical abilities with their church family. Whether you like to sing or to play a musical instrument, there is definitely a place for you in our special music program. Many people feel that they do not play or sing well enough to make a special music offering in church. Please be assured that whatever level of musical accomplishment you currently possess, we can definitely find a way for you to participate. If you are not comfortable playing or singing a solo, we can help find others for you to team up with. If you have less musical experience, we can find music suited to your level of musical proficiency. Children who are at an elementary stage in their musical journey are always welcome to participate in a “Young People’s Prelude” at the start of worship service. Remember, you are making a musical offering to God and to your church family and nowhere will you find a more accepting audience! To share your musical talents with us and make a special music

offering, or to request further information, please give me a call at (608) 779-9669 or send an email to [email protected]. You are also welcome to catch me at church after any worship service. Thank you in advance for helping us worship at Good Shepherd by sharing your musical gifts!

How to escape from a car

If a child is somehow placed into a car by an

abductor, there is usually a three-hour

window of opportunity. The abductor doesn’t

usually hurt the child immediately — there is

time to escape if the child-learned-behavior

allows the child not to panic and be reactive.

Therefore, it is helpful for children to know

methods of escaping, such as the following:

1. Reach for the door and try to get out

immediately.

2. Do not be passive. In a four-door car, the

child can jump in the backseat and try the door

quickly.

3. If the child is placed in a trunk, don’t panic:

Look for a panel in the trunk that comes right

out when you pull on it. Tear the wires to the

tail-lights and brakes. Police might then pull the

abductor over.

Abductors are often known by the child

Abductors don’t usually fit the stereotypical

profile of a scary, creepy stranger or dirty old

man. Motives are often sexual and most are not

true strangers. They target children and seek

their confidence by developing a casual

relationship with them. Family abductors make

up the majority of kidnap offenders, as in a

custody battle.

Final safety reminders for parents

1. Know where your children are, and know

who they know.

2. Pay attention to changes in your child’s

behavior.

3. Never leave your child alone in a public

place, car, or stroller.

4. Never ask a stranger to hold your baby, even

for an instant.

5. Don’t label their lunch boxes or clothing.

6. Don’t let children go out alone. Remember

the buddy system in swimming.

7. Teach your child their telephone number,

how to contact you and a close friend.

8. Pay attention to threats.

9. In custody battles, get social security, credit

card numbers, and addresses.

10. Take a lot of photos of your child and keep

them current.

11. Keep dental and medical records.

12. Have a neighborhood meeting so that

children know safe houses in the neighborhood

where they can run in the case of an

emergency.

13. Never open the door without having a secret

password between you and your child.

14. Older children should be encouraged to use

their critical thinking and intuition, and to

anticipate, for example, slow-driving cars in

front of a neighborhood or playground.

Remember, above all else, safety first.

Prevention is the key. Develop a family plan of

action for emergency and crisis situation, and

practice and rehearse them with your children

through role modeling and role-playing. Teach

your children the rules, and give them the

confidence they need to be able to follow

through on the escape techniques outlined

above. Emphasize your child’s right of privacy

and ownership, and that sexual advances from

adults are against the law.

If they are involved and invested, children are

more likely to remember and take action if

someone tries to abduct them. We have to

empower our kids to help keep them safe.

Bev Sorenson RN
