GOODSCHOOLSREPORT

n interview I conducted with theHeadmaster of St John’s Collegein Johannesburg, Roger Cameron, provided much food for thought as

we compiled this report.Cameron revealed that the school places

a “small emphasis” on business subjects, preferring to focus on the liberal arts. Theschool’s purpose is “much more than passingan exam”. Subjects like life orientation, divinity, maths and English better equip young menwith the thinking skills required in a modernworld, he says. Neither accounting nor businesseconomics is offered at the school.“We’re not convinced that teaching boys

accounting is as valuable as teaching themsomething like history, which gives them abroad-based understanding of how the world’sformed,” he says. It’s one example of the changing landscape

at our schools, as institutions flex academicmuscles in areas in which their students haveexcelled over many decades.

Another interesting trend on the localschooling horizon is the increasing use oftablets and laptops among pupils as young asfive. This is still an area of conflict, with someexperts like Spark Schools founder StaceyBrewer maintaining that software application ismore valuable to youngminds than hardware.Brewer calls iPads in the classrooms “baby-sitting devices” and has rather spearheaded theuse of Google Chromebook computers in herschools, with a focus on software that reinforcesclassroom instruction. Our introductory featureon the use of new technologies in schoolsexplores this subject further. We’re proud to once again present our

annual curation of SA’s top-performing publicand private schools, in association with OldMutual. We hope these pages help make yourdecision about schooling your children thatmuch easier.

As NelsonMandela said: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change theworld.’ Old Mutual believes creating this positive future is everyone’s social responsibility.Over the years it’s supported many education initiatives across the country. One of its most

innovative interventions is the R1,2 billion Schools Fund launched to finance the expansion andinfrastructure of independent low-fee-paying schools to achieve quality education outcomes.Parents also need to prioritise their children’s education and start saving for it the day their

children are born. Old Mutual supports this through a range of savings and investment productsand services. Old Mutual is proud to sponsor DESTINY’sGood Schools Report.

For over 100 years St John’s has produced some of the country’s finest leaders as well as prominent sporting personalities. That’s because

the education offered at St John’s goes way beyond the academic, instilling self-confidence, integrity and leadership in its students. The

diversified curriculum from pre-grade to post-matric caters for the individual in each and every pupil with a strong emphasis on creative

and lateral thinking. Our success has been achieved through constant planning, research and evaluation resulting in best educational

using new technologies. In SA, the idea’s gaining traction through

the astronomical growth of companieslike listed private education group Curro

Holdings. The company’s share pricehas risen five-fold since its listing onthe Johannesburg Stock Exchange in2011 and has seen its earnings multiplycomprehensively. It has 31 independentschools in the group, which cater to 28 000students. Ten new Curro schools are ontrack for completion before the end of 2014and the company has a growth forecast ofopening its 80th school by 2020.Although local figures are hard to come

by, the spurt in investment in educationabroad gives a firm indication of thisupward trend. According to Chicagoconsultancy GSV Advisors, Americanventure capitalists are said to have investedjust under $1,2 billion in education andtraining companies in 2013 – four timesthe amount they invested in 2008.Curro trumpets what it calls “21st-

century learning” – a method ofincorporating innovative technology inclassrooms in order to raise children whoare “digital natives”. The schools have anintegrated IT curriculum, incorporatingthe latest software and cloud technology. They also optimise the use of tablets inclassrooms and in addition to focusingon the three Rs (reading, writingand arithmetic), have added four Cs(communication, collaboration, criticalthinking/problem-solving, creativity/innovation) and twoMs (motivation andmetacognition, a high-level formof understanding, or “knowingwithout knowing”).Another successful South African

educational start-up is social entrepreneurStacey Brewer’s eAdvance collectionof Spark Schools. Based only inJohannesburg for now, the eAdvance groupis revolutionising the local landscapethrough a blended learning model

which combines classroom teachingwith the deliberate use of technology toenhance students’ results in what theycall the “Learning Lab”. It’s all about“individualised instruction” for Brewer.Students spend 70-80 minutes of eachschool day working with software online. These instructional programs mirrorclassroom standards in literacy and mathsand continually assess students so thatthey study at a pace appropriate to each ofthem. Teachers are then free to spend moretime on thinking skills and co-operative

group learning in the classroom.“We use Google Chromebooks and

have adapted software for classroominteraction. The hardware-driven approachusing tablets that many schools haveadopted – as opposed to focusing on thesoftware used – doesn’t always makefor valuable data-gathering. It’s usedas a babysitting tool in many instances,”she says.Impressively, the schools also boast low

fees of R15 750 per year. Costs are keptdown by the use of innovative technology, which saves teachers’ time, and a clevercompany structure, divided into a property

and management firm. Schools pay rentaland management fees to eAdvance, whichruns the properties. This eliminatesany administrative burdens and allowsfor economies of scale. There’s also nomiddle management (just a principal, anacademic dean and teachers) and parentsare requested to dedicate 30 hours a yearto the school, helping with tasks likephotocopying and marking homework.

Pioneer Academies is yet anotherexample of a groundbreaking educationmodel. It’s a network of independentschools with a curriculum based on thecognitive and emotional development ofstudents. The company aims to preparestudents for “success in an uncertainfuture” by focusing on thought, leadership,self-mastery and resilience. FounderChinezi Chijioke says modern educationfeels to him the way “personal computingmust have been in the early Eighties”. “Ourquest is to develop an ‘Apple’, a pioneer ofgreat 21st-century schooling,” he adds. And the organisation plans to do it forannual fees of R20 000-R40 000.The firstschool opens in Ormonde, Johannesburg, next year.

“A lot of what’s out there is fixated onhowmany distinctions they get or howgood their rugby team is,” says Chijioke.

“Providing education for young peopleto succeed in life beyond school is moreholistic than that. It’s about buildingmastery across three areas: intellectualrigour, leadership and service, andpersonal mastery, [which comprise] theself-awareness, perseverance and reflectivepractice necessary to be successful.”

Wide-ranging workshops held inJohannesburg with parents offeredfascinating insights into the outcomesmany of them wanted for their children.Asked what they were missing in schoolstoday, the most common answer was“critical thinking and problem-solving”.

Chijioke doesn’t believe most schoolsare doing a good enough job of producinginnovators and problem-solvers.

“Knowledge is an absolute commodityand it changes all the time. What mattersis what you can do with it – with others –to make a difference or solve a problem. And we have plenty of opportunitieson this continent to solve problems. Innovation also extends to methodsof teaching. Teachers will work in teams, led by a master teacher and includingtwo to four dedicated grade or subjectteachers. It’s an approach that encouragescollaboration and makes for a “continuousapprenticeship” for teachers to hone theircraft throughout their careers. The architecture of the schools will alsodiffer from the norm. Chijioke says theyplan to minimise corridors and maximiselearning space.

a National Senior Certificate qualification, but a dual examination system exists, withboth the IEB and the government-sectorUmalusi setting their own exam papers.CEO of the IEB, Anne Oberholzer, believesthe IEB exams better prepare learners fortertiary education and notes that somehigh-profile schools, including Bishops andHerschel in Cape Town, have historicallychosen to write the state exams instead –“for a variety of reasons”.Another great strength of schools like

St John’s remains the rich and influentialold boys’ network that students tap into.“It’s about networking, accessing

contacts and developing opportunities. If you know people who have access toresources and expertise, and can tap intothem through classmates, that’s obviouslyof huge value. But it’s a process driven onlyby individuals who go after it. It’s not ajobs-for-pals scenario, the way it used tobe. Students at Sacred Heart useiPads throughout the day to accesssubject materials, record notes, create projects and search onlinefor supplemental information aboutthe topics they’re studying. Teachershave also discovered creative waysto integrate iPads into their teachingto make lessons fun, interesting andpacked with activity. The primary school has used

iPads to create engaging lessonsthat reinforce the building blocksof learning. For example, the MyStory and Essential Skeleton appsare used by teachers. TheMy Storyapp combines language and visuallearning to build vocabulary andfacilitate language structure, allowingpupils to demonstrate their skills in anengaging way. The app also teachesthem social skills through teamworkand presentations. The EssentialSkeleton is a 3Dmedical app that

teaches pupils about anatomyand helps them to actively engagethrough virtual discovery. It alsoallows them to choose the aspectson which they want to be challengedand progress at their own rate. The children have such fun whilelearning about the body that theydon’t even realise they’re tackling adifficult concept. In the high school, the ZA Books

OLDMUTUAL TIP:Many people choose unit trusts for long-term investments

as they offer a lot of choice, as well as funds that specifically focus on beating

the rate of inflation by a certain percentage. this is important because education

inflation is higher than normal inflation. “Unit trust investments are ideal for people

who require flexibility and access to the funds. However, you must be disciplined

and avoid the temptation of dipping into your child’sfunds,” says Old Mutual’s

have restrictions that limit access to your money, and hence no exit charges, any

OLDMUTUAL TIP:Most children are readyto start grade R at the age of six. If your child’s borntoday, you’ll need to save at least R460 per month tosend him or her to university to do a three-year degree. However, if your child started grade R this year, this

amount is at least R680 per month for university tuitionfees alone. these are savings required if you expectinvestment returns of 10% a year and if you increaseyour premiumwith education inflation of 9% every

year. Remember that your salary may increase everyyear with inflation too. Achieving your financial goalis therefore muchmore attainable if you start at a

reasonable level, but continue increasingyour premiums every year as your salary increases.
