MAY 2016 INSIDE MESSAGE FROM PASTOR KARYN T he sun hasn’t even made a glimmer on the horizon yet, and I am on a commuter train with folks as I make my way north to the MBTI certification training that I am in California to complete. I have, as of today, completed half of the required training and am eager to tell you all about it when I arrive home in another week. For now, I would like to share with you some reflections on my time here so far because as much as I have all sorts of facts and pertinent information in my head about the MBTI, what has really caught my attention is how it is mirroring what I am seeing as I travel the hour and half by train from my parents house to the training site. Each morning I wake up at 4:00 a.m., get myself ready and head to the train station where I board the Orange County Metrolink to Union Station at 5:38. I remember watching I Love Lucy in those later years, and Ricky would get on the train and head into the city each day, and I remember thinking that would be cool to do but how many people actually do that? It turns out quite a lot! It amazes me the number of people I have seen each morning riding the train an hour north for what I assume is work and if they are like me, they will get aboard another train and maybe a bus before they arrive at their destination. That is not the meat of what I have been reflecting on, but it certainly surprised me how many people were on the train so early in the morning. Yesterday, I was on train number two (the Gold Line Metro that takes me from Los Angeles to Pasadena) when the song “Beautiful Things” came up on my playlist. Side note: everyone has headphones in! Riding the train, walking around town. It is bizarre to me, but I have adopted the practice occasionally so that I fit in. Anyway, this song comes on that we as a community have been singing since Ash Wednesday, and I looked around me at all the people on this train and thought how incredibly beautiful we all are. Now, as you can imagine, none of us looked alike. That would be weird if I said to you: we were all beautiful and they all looked like me, wouldn’t it? But I was surrounded by people of different sizes, shapes and colors. Some were clearly business people, some blue collar workers, some homeless, some I wasn’t quite sure what. There were multiple languages being spoken (by those without headphones on), and we were traveling though neighborhoods that changed. I looked around, and I couldn’t help but think how beautiful all these creatures of God were. And we all rode the train together with no problems; some even helped this out-of- towner make sure she was in the right place. (Chicago is better at signage than LA, I have decided.) As I sit in my training and learn about the 16 personality types that the MBTI identified and I look around that room, I see the same kind of diversity and the same kind of beauty and I am reminded that even when we all look similar, we are uniquely who we are created to be. Each of us comes to the table with all that we are and offers to the world our unique vision of God’s love. Each of us comes to the table with our pain and our joy, with our life experience and our innate personalities and offers them up to the world. Each of us comes to the table of Christ, at his invitation, with all that we are and are forgiven and strengthened for the sake of the world, our task to see the beauty in the other and love them and work with them to bring about God’s kingdom. The problem comes when we fail to see the uniqueness of others and instead see the other as bad or less than because of their differences. Over the summer, I am going to write about three pieces of art that have meant something to me. Art is a great way to begin to understand how we can look at something, see something differently, grow from how others see it and, even though we still disagree, we can get along and we can still talk. I am looking forward to the conversations we have around this art, the ways you will see something that I don’t, or understand something in a way that is different than I do. I look forward to ways that our relationships will deepen as we come to greater understanding of each other and still come together in love to worship God. The sun hasn’t even made a glimmer on the

5TH GRADE FAITH BUILDING BLOCK

At First Lutheran, all the baptized are welcome to participate in Holy Communion as parents choose. That means that many of our 5th graders have already been communing. For some, Maundy Thursday was their first experience of the meal where we “taste and see that the Lord is good.” We connected the promises God made them to Holy Communion, God’s way of maintaining a relationship with each baptized child of God. Thank God for Holy Communion! And thank God for this year’s 5th graders as they continue to step deeper into the faith of Christ!

MESSAGE FROM PASTOR STANTON

“Life is a series of beginnings, not endings.” ~ Bernie Siegel

May is a month full of transitions, change and

new beginnings. As Spring comes to flower, as graduates see the end of their high school or college years, as

many of us look forward to a new place to live or a new job, as kids complete another school year… there are many things that are coming to an end. And there are parts of ourselves that dwell on endings. All that was has passed. And perhaps we liked it. Perhaps we’ll miss it.

But with every ending comes a beginning. As one chapter is finished, another is about to be written. The transition from what was to what will be can feel exciting or even exhilarating. It can also feel scary and exhausting. What was a known quantity. What will be is unknown and the unknown, although full of positive possibilities also includes possible danger.

What transitions are you facing? What new beginnings are you or your loved ones entering into? Where was God in the things that are passing away? Where do you pray God will be in the new things?

I would like to share a blessing for new beginnings with you from “For Everything A Season: 75 Blessings for Daily Life” by the Nilsen Family. The book is available from our resource center. We let these milestone moments zoom by at the speed of light and many times never name the fears, the thrills or the presence of God amidst our changing lives. When we stop long enough—on a Sunday night perhaps—to share a conversation about the many changes happening around us and in us, we provide space for our soul to breathe.

Simply gather some loved ones or friends, or whoever may be involved in this new beginning, and write the new beginning down on the top of a piece of paper. Set out a picture of Jesus, a cross, a Bible and a candle. Light the candle. As you do, say, “For everything there is a season and a time

for every matter under heaven.” Then pray a prayer like this: “Dear Lord, give to (name) direction during this time, clear focus on the possibilities for this new beginning, help in the many preparations, and trust that all will be well. Amen.” After lighting the candle and saying a prayer, offer a reading from Philippians 4. “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Next, on a piece of paper under the title of the new beginning, give each person a few minutes to complete the following sentences and be ready to share your reflections: “I hope that…”, “I worry about…”, “I will be disappointed if…”, “I am excited about…” After your responses are shared, each person holds up their paper and says, “I give all hopes and worries to God who wants only what is best for me.” And then, place the paper on the table next to the Bible or cross or picture that you’ve put there. This could be your home altar. Finally, share this word of blessing: “May we feel peace, trusting that God will be present in all new beginnings, carrying our hopes and bringing us life. Amen.”

Christians do well in the midst of new beginnings to remember that God is already in our future. Sharing a blessing with one another in the midst of nervous worry or fearful angst is a gift. I pray the blessings of new life will be showered upon you this month!

LUTHERAN DISASTER RESPONSE

ECUADOR EARTHQUAKE

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the northern coast of Ecuador on April 16. While assessment of damage is still taking place, more than 250 deaths have been confirmed, thousands have been injured and massive damage to and destruction of buildings and homes have been reported. The quake is the worst the region has experienced in more than 35 years.

Working with our trusted partners, Lutheran Disaster Response will help those in need, especially those living in smaller cities and regions that are vulnerable and in need of immediate assistance. Lutheran Disaster Response is continuing to gather information from affected

areas and has started to establish coordination with the government and other relief agencies.

Your help is needed. Lutheran Disaster Response anticipates relief will be provided in the form of food, water, medical supplies, shelter and psycho-social support. Your gifts will be used to help those impacted by this earthquake, until this response is complete.

Gifts from people like you make it possible for the church to respond – bringing help, hope and healing to our sisters and brothers in Ecuador. Please continue to pray for those affected as they work to rebuild their homes and lives.

Our church’s ministry to serve the community’s

young people is picking up speed and picking up supporters along the way. First Teen Clothes Closet

provided needed clothing, shoes, coats and toiletries to more than 130 teens last year with donations provided primarily by our church family.

Now more organizations have gotten involved, providing the items needed to reach even more young people.

Courtney Kubly, merchandise manager at TJ Maxx in Onalaska, heard about the First Teen Clothes Closet through a friend, Brenda Schaefer, a member at First Lutheran Church in Onalaska who has helped with the design of the clothes closet.

“We are always keeping each other updated on local things of importance and how we can band together to help,” Kubly said. “I had recently learned through other channels how many homeless children there are currently in the La Crosse and Onalaska area and was completely overwhelmed by the figure. So when Brenda made me aware of the Teen Closet, I was motivated to action.”

Kubly coordinated a drive to collect clothing and other items from friends and from associates at TJ Maxx, along with donations directly from the store as part of its “Neighbor of Choice” program, through which TJ Maxx partners with a community non-profit organization each month.

Items donated included new and gently used clothing for guys and girls, toiletries, accessories, shoes, cold weather accessories, new socks and undergarments and food and snacks to be offered to First Teen Clothes Closet guests.

“One of the reasons we chose to support the Teen Clothes Closet was the urgent need,” Kubly said. “Many of our associates are high school and college age, so they can directly relate to the teens in need. Many of our adult staff have children in middle and high school, so this was really a great fit for us because almost all of our associates could

identify with the great need and what the Clothes Closet is doing to make a positive impact in our area.”

“Drives such as the one Courtney organized also provide a great way for us to let the community know about the service available through the Clothes Closet,” said committee member Lori Lunney. “We need to be sure the teens who need our help know that it is available.”

The First Teen Clothes Closet committee has reached out to social workers, school counselors and other assistance providers in the community including the YMCA Youth Center, Crossfire Ministries and the Boys and Girls Club. They also encourage anyone who knows of a teen in need to pass along information about the closet.

Appointments may be scheduled by contacting First Lutheran Church at 608.783.2236 or by visiting the Closet’s web page at firstlu.org/clothescloset. The First Teen Clothes Closet can also be found on:• Facebook: facebook.com/1stteencloset• Twitter: @1stteencloset• Instagram: @1stteencloset

GOD’S HANDS & FEET

WALKING PRAYERSI get a kick out of walking

tacos: putting food in a bag and eating out of it. Most everyone seems to enjoy them. Walking around eating out of a bag comes in handy

when you are at an event without seating, but I do miss sitting down and enjoying the time to eat with those around me. I enjoy doing things with other people, like worshiping, serving at church, shopping, having coffee and praying. It is wonderful to pray together as a group, praying for one another and praying for those not with us. Praying with just one other person brings us closer together, and we feel more connected with one another and God. I love the closeness it brings, the quietness before starting, the stillness in between requests and the calmness after ending. Wouldn’t it be nice to experience this daily. That may not be possible, but we do have an opportunity to experience praying together this month.

The first week in May we will have our prayer walk. It’s a time to take your family and friends on a walk around your neighborhood or your children’s school neighborhood or anywhere you feel the need and pray. There are several ways to do this, just like a walking taco, pray as you walk silently or walk and pray at each intersection or in front of a building that you feel needs our prayers. We make it as easy for you to pray as we can. We have a booklet available for your group with suggestion of prayers, a statement to make to someone who asks you what you are doing and helpful hints for children as well. Everyone in your group can silently pray as you walk, you can have one or two people pray, or your whole group can take turns praying; however your group wants to do it. There is no wrong way. The best part is you choose the neighborhood and the time you will pray. Your group can do it after church on Sunday, Monday morning, Tuesday after T-Ball, Wednesday before worship, Thursday after throwing laundry in the wash, Friday before going out

for fish, or Saturday after supper. A family can do it by themselves; a couple families can do it and plan on eating afterwards together having a potluck or going out for ice cream. A small group could do it before or after they meet. Your small group can use this as your meeting time and pray for the neighborhood where you meet. Get creative with your family or small group and get together and walk praying together.

If you have any questions or need help with ideas or planning, I would love to help you. Call or e-mail me and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Make this fun for you and your group; remember that there is no wrong way to pray. God tells us to always be in prayer. I Thessalonians 5:17 says, “pray without ceasing,” and Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God.”

So let’s get out there and pray!!

CALL FOR TEACHERS:Planning for next year’s Sunday school has already begun! The only way to maintain a dynamic and well run Sunday school program is with the help of our congregation! Please consider the reward of being a Sunday school teacher or helper next year. Many hands make light work (and reap great joy J)! You need not be able to be present every weekend to teach, nor do you need to have experience or be an “expert” at the Bible stories. We have wonderful mentors and great resources!

Contact Beth and Joel Miller at [email protected] or fill out the form on the right and turn it into the office.

In order to have a great Sunday School program, we need many volunteers. There are lots of ways to be involved! Please prayerfully consider where you can help. Thank you!!

In spite of overcast skies, the OWLs had a fun and informative trip to Sugar Creek Bible camp in April. We saw several eagles on the trip down and enjoyed a wonderful program by Dick Campbell, who helped us “Remember the USS Indianapolis and Her Crew.” Everyone agreed we learned a great deal about the famous ship and its crew.

In May we turn our attention to travel as we look forward to summer trips and grand adventures. We will start with our potluck on Wednesday, May 18, at noon in the narthex. As promised, Brian and Mary Narveson will show photos and tell of their adventures

to Ireland and the Isle of Man last fall. Never heard of the Isle of Man? This will be a great opportunity learn about a unique island, which is its own nation, in the Irish Sea.

The Isle of Man is full of history, but so is Wisconsin. For our May outing we will travel to Eau Claire to visit the Chippewa Valley Museum.

This is a highly rated museum that has excellent exhibits and beautifully preserved historic buildings detailing the history of the Chippewa Valley. The museum also offers fun activities, a 1950s ice cream parlor, a museum store and rotating special exhibits. A visitor favorite is the multi-media object theater “This Day.” The Chippewa Valley Museum sits beneath towering pines in Eau Claire’s beautiful Carson Park, a 134-acre peninsula nestled inside horseshoe-shaped Half Moon Lake. A fantastic opportunity to learn more of Wisconsin’s history. This grand adventure will depart from the church at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 26. It is about a 90 minute drive to Eau Claire, where we will have lunch at a local establishment. After lunch we will visit the museum and depart for home (after a stop for refreshments at the museum’s ice cream parlor) about 3:30. We should be back at the church by 5 PM. Cost of the museum is $7, lunch is on your own. The museum and grounds are handicap

accessible and they have wheelchairs available. Please let Brian know ahead of time if you would like one reserved. Please call or email Brian Narveson at [email protected] or 608-526-9700 by Tuesday night, May 24, if you plan to attend. The outing is scheduled late in May to increase the chance of warm weather.

The OWLs are a group at First that welcomes anyone, First Lutheran members or not, who are 55+. For information or to ask questions, contact Brian Narveson at [email protected].
