• ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND PROBLEMS – Elijah came on the scene of Israel
during the reign of the wicked king Ahab – he prayed that rain and dew would cease till he gave the word 1Ki 17:1
– Sustained by God through drought of over three years 17:6, 9, 22
– Great contest with the prophets of Baal at Mt. Carmel 1Ki 18:19-40
• ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND PROBLEMS – Queen Jezebel vowed to kill him and
fearing for his life he fled.– Took refuge in a cave close to Mt. Horeb
(Sinai) far south of Israel – Elijah begins to feel sorry for himself
• GOD'S RESPONSE TO DESPONDENCY – God's awesome power: wind, earthquake,
fire; but He did not work through such devastation, He actually came in a still small voice 1Ki 19:11,12
– God gave Elijah work to do – You are not alone: "I still have 7,000 who
have not bowed to Baal. 1Ki 19:18
