collector of Woiluku went toSpreckolsvillo to got tho taxes.Ho was politely informed thattho Hawaiians had demandedtheir wages in full and refuse toallow the plantation to deductthe amount of their taxes. About j

100 men declined to pay taxesand made the collector under-- 1

stand that they will rather work I

on the roads, if ho can put them j

there. The move is expected to I

bo generally adopted; aud Maui j

will evidently be the first toillustrate tho groat principle of"ntfiaxation without represeuta- -tioa.

THE LABOR COMMISSJQNjjg- ro thT'Judiciarv Committers

an opinion that the council shoald '

close-exc- ept in case of emer- - The solitHiy Hawaiian who regency- - and leave all legislation t mained asa'jaror last Mondayto thecotning elocted logisiatare. j morning, Y. Hapa KahnraolfnThe minister is to coniplimnted , bv laQ messenger andnpon tne stana tuKen by mm mthis matter. It did not meetwith the approval of the othermembors of the councils. Someof them have very small chances j served out his whole term of im-- of

being electod to the legislature , prisontnent in Oahu jnil by work- -if there ever is any, and they j jDg at Emma Square. Since his

naturally object to relinquish the release, he has never, to ourbrief authority vested in them by 'knowledge, been pardoned, andMr. Stevens and themselves. They like to make laws and theydo make some daisy laws..Nearly a 3'ear ago the

councils decided to avoid alllegislation which was notabsolutely necessary, but noth-

ing could stop the law-

makers. Mr. Damon has veryconsistently opposed legislationbv the councils but he has onlvsmall support.

Tno labor commission for whichprovisions now has been madewill possibly turn out a greatsuccess and of benefit to thecountry, and it may possibly endin a fizzle and pigeon-hol- ed

volumes of statistics, interviewsand suggestions. It all dependson who is selected to do thework and how much influence thoplanters will have on the commis-

sion. As a rule commissions dolittle good except having n gen-

erally good time, junketingaround a country, diuing andwining aud gotting a paid secret-ary to writo a report in as generalterras as possible. We hope thiscommission will bo an exceptionfrom the rule. There is as Mr.W. C. "Wilder said work enoughfor it to last a voar, and Mr. W.

O. Smith still expects the com-

mission to report to thonextlegislature which will meet inFebruary next.

What tho object of tho commit-

tee is and what is to bo gainedby spending $5,000 on it seemsuot clear to anybody, not oven totho introducer. If tho idea is tofind out, if tho country can affordto dispenso with coolio and con-trac- F

labor, nud if tho plantationscan pay dividends which employ-

ing a higher grade labor the com-

mission has a very noble objectand will bo a failure. The violto ofall our plantations is "highdividends, cheap labor" and notOU0 Of them would bo willing toreduce dividends and increasewages. And tho planters controlthis govornmont both tho executive, "judicial, and legislativebranch. Even Mr. Emmoluthwill admit that fact. Ho knowsit from experience. Mr. Smithspoke in the highest terms abouttho development of tho country, aud stated that wo will needgreat a number of laborers during tho next two years. That la- -

bor will be Japanese contractlabor, 'commission or no commission, and for that reason wefear that Mr. Emmeluth's commission will not be an exception, but prove itself an incubator outof which will come wastepaperLibelled "report."

A DESERVED SNUB.

Mr. J. F. Morgan --showed hisgood sense yesterday b givinghis colleagues in tho councils &

piece of his mind. The councilshave lately got into the habit ofrailroading important measuresthrough and passing bills without giving the members a chanceto look at them or make up theirminds to the merit of the measure. The result of this hasty legislaHon has been a constant tinkeringon the bills nreviouslv. n&ssed.

Editor Holomga:

"If Christ came to Chicago"could well be read, marked, learned, and inwardty digestedby everyone in Honolulu andparticularly those who, not coq-te- nt

with a quick steady business,go in as a diversion for over-

throwing by means of trickery asettled government. Mr. Stead'sscathingroxpose of "boodle ringers, ward politicians in Chicago willfit all of the same class here. The lie in tho Advertiser on Wed-

nesday and rubbed in further onThursday comes within the scope"of Mr. Steads terrible invectives. In the same category can beplaced the Stars "English don'tcount." Apropos of this slur, let tho hound who edits the Starjust try it at, say forty paces. It has time and time again beenthrown in tho face of those whoaro loyal to constitutional govern-ment; "Well! why don'.t you dosomething? Do what? Buy upthe Press of tho United Statesas has deen done by the respect-ab- lo

psalm singing p. g's?'' Thetime will come when the exactamount of that infamy will cometo light. 2so, the royalists mightdo something, if they would takea loaf out of tho book of thebribe givers, but there is nonecessity for it, because tho causeof the roj-alist-

s is founded injustice and right, and in the endright will conquer and the sneakthioves, bribe givers and all oftheir ilk will find the level towhich they belong. .

If Christ came to Honolulu avery pertinent question would bo"Where aro my brothers of theBawaiian nice whom you claimhave been saved? I fiad raychurches empty because of yourpolitics! I find Tny brothers indistress because of your oppres-sions! I fiud you seated comfort--

to worship mo, while my brothersof another race are mourning be--cause of your injustice! Go to,ye hypocrites and wait for yourshort comings and backslidings.Where aro my brothers whom Igave my life to save? Why sitthey in the dust? Inasmnch asye have done it unto one of thesethe least of my brethren, ye havedone it unto me."

I have heard these saintedhypocrites say, the hand of Godisiu this; for the sake of argu-ment wo admit tho fact and thensay, yes, the hand of God is in itto show up the shameful passionsof men who bent on accomplish-ing their selfish ends, seek theirown damnation aud ruin. Cowpersa3-s,4,G- moves in & mysteriouswa ' and surely enough thewhited sepulchers who have worked ruin In these fair isles bybribery, treachery and everyother vile trick that all the devilsin hell could invent will have the!reward they so richly deserve.I shall in issue mentionother questions which Ghristwould ask if he camo to Hono-lulu.

In "Puddenhead Wilson's Phil-osophy" Mark Twain says: "Putall of your eggs in one basketand watch that basket " Eggsaro noMhe only things to whichthis applies, we can make it fitstoves and change eggs intodollars and make it read Investyour coin in a Pansy Stove andthe stove will watch itself. Wehave been watching these stovesfor the past five years, and findthem the best iron stove sold inthis market for the money,Where else than at our store can3'ou get a stove that will do every-thing that a $50 stove will do andget it for $15? Echo answers,'the place isn't built.' We havesold hundreds of these stoves inHonolulu, and never had a com- - j

plaint. Two weeks ago, we soldone to a gentleman on Hawaii, and 3'esterday he. ordered anotherfor a friend. The stove sellsitself through its fuel savingqualities, and because, it is agood baker. You can get otherstyles of stoves if you are notparticular as to tho quantityof fuel you burn or how yourfood is cooked. There's no dys-

pepsia in meals prepared on aPAXSr.

We received last week a lot ofwire clothes-lin- es that holdwashed clothes without usingpins. It is a sort of double wirearrangement and the pieces areheld in between; the harder thewind blows the tighter the piecesaro held to the line. There isabsolutely no danger of theclothing being torn as there isnothing sharp about the line.Whilo tho cost is a trifle greaterthan rope, this new style willlast so much longer that it iseconomical to buy the' pinlessline.

Tho'CLAUSS is one of thenew fangled saw-ed- ge knives thatcuts warm bread without leavingit heavy and iced cake withoutmaking crumbs There are two orthree different makes of theseknives, all on the same principleand each one pronounced thebest on earth b the manufac-turers. We selected tho Clauss, which we believe as a disinterest-ed spectator- - to be better than itsneighbors. You never had any-thing in your life that give asmuch satisfaction for a dollar. If3Tou were buying the other sortyon would get only one.

The favorite sewing machinein any community is the one that-does the most for tho least moneyand which runs the easiest. Inthe "Wertheim" you have amachine that sews three distinctstitches-Th- e Lock, Chain andEmbroidery and runs easier thanany other machine, and you paytwenty' dollars less for it. Econ-omy stands boldly every sidewhen you buy a Wertheim. Init t ttucking tne cnam stnen is preferable, but in other kinds ofwork, the lock stitch is the best.If you buy a machine that sewsthe.lock, unless it is a Wertheim,it won't sew a chain stitch. There's no particular saving inbuying a machine with but onestitch, the, Wertheim does threeand saves yon lots of trouble andwork.

We've just unpacked six casksof stand lamps that were built forhard times. They have metalbases and are decorated so as tomake a very neat appearance in aroom. We don't think you canget as good a lamp anywhere elsefor tho money, try as hard as youplease.

Our stock of table cutlery, spoons and forks is as largo asyou will find in any store in SanFrancisco, and our prices comparefavorably with those in NewYork. ,

OVER ZEALOUS.

It is of course, very praise-worthy of the polico to be vigi-

lant and protect us againstburglars and evil doers, but themauner in which it occasionallyis done shows a lack of discretionwhich might bo embarrassing, tosay tho least, both to tho reswdent and to tho police.

Last night a young gentlemanliving on King streea few housesabove Thomas Square had anunpleasant experience. He hadbeen at his office working till 10o'clock and boarded the tramcarfor homo. When at his gate hejumped off and wont in. Wheninside the gate he heard a horgerman riding up and stood still tosee who it was. Tho horseman whoproved to bo a mounted policepalled up and ordered tho gentle-man to move on. As he was onhis own premises he naturallysuggested to the police-offic-er totake his own proposition anddust. Tho follower of Mr. Hitch-cock immediately dismounted, stating that ho would make thegentleman "move on." Ho alsodemanded his name, and as thatwas refused proposed to take himout of the yard to the stationhouse (and a nice contract hewould have undertaken). Whenthe battle seomed to be eminentthe lady of the house called outenquiring who her son was talk-

ing with. That settled the criti-cal situation. Tho guardian of thepeace vamosed, got on his horseaud disappeared, for other climesrind scenes.

It would bo just as well if thesemounted officers were taaght pro-per aud discrot conduct as wellas horseback riding and shooting. If sol they will soma day hecoe

greater nttieaace tfean the neverught burglars now ara.

The Bicycle Meet.

The races tomorrow afternoonai the Kspiolani Prk promise' tobe a grea success. About ISriders will be in the field in thedifferent races, and the resultswill be watched with great inter-est. It is not alone a test between the riders, but also ameeting to decide what kind ofbicycle is the best. The boyshave been in training for severalweeks and all are in good trim. H.E. Walker's bicycle met with aslight accident last night butwill be in order before tomorrow.Angas who rode it had such aspeed on that the front wheeltore away, and ran towards Ho-

nolulu whilo the rider chasedafter it on the hind wheel. Theywill bo brought together again to-

day. Young Kakayama goes likestreak lightning, and the invin-

cible Giles can hardly be timed. It will well pay to go to the Parkand witness the meeting. Thebaud will be in attendance, andthe prices of admission are with-

in the reach of all.
