President’s Message

Welcome to the February 2011 meeting of the Golden Dome Chapter of ABWA!

FEBRUARY is such a fantastic month for us because we take the time to reflect on the keyfactor that governs our lives and that factor is “LOVE”. Just think, without love we would have nothing and definitely would be nothing, because we cannot function alone. On Valentine Day take a moment and let someone know that you love them. During this month we take the time to think on our individual heritage as we celebrate “Black History Month”, and atthe same time we focus on our health because this is “National Heart Month”. Think about it, these three factors joined together are three of the driving forces that help to make us what we are. Take the time to reflect and act on them.

The Golden Dome Chapter has made great strides in keeping up with the national theme “Leading with Vision” while we move forward in bridging the gap and Changing Women Lives One Woman at a Time.

Remember Golden Dome, it is Anniversary time, so begin to prepare and do as one loud voice in this day and time so eloquently says “Get Ready, Get Ready, Get Ready” and let’s began to Celebrate.

I thank you for your dedication and commitment to the Golden Dome Chapter-ABWA.

Vol. 2 - Issue No. 7 WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE-Oct 2010 February 2011

A GLANCE OF WHAT HAPPENED IN CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEEAT THE WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE – OCTOBER 28- 30, 2010

By Launa B. Bacon

The first day of the conference began with early registration, followed by a newcomers welcome and conference orientation. The Golden Dome members headed to their first session. Track A: ABWA-KU MBA Essentials – Strategic Planning and Management and Track B: Franklin Covey Championing Diversity- a practice approach to workplace diversity. The presenter for Track B was Homero Bayarena. He began explaining an expression that was taken from the Northern natal in South Africa called the Spirit of Ubunto “Sawa Bona” which means “I see you”. “Sikhona” meaning “I am here” In other words, when you are greeted by someone and they say “hello” many times they do not see you. Until you see me, I am not here, and when you see me, you bring me into existence. To be brought into existence, the person will perhaps say, “how is your family?’ or “I hope you have a great day”. Now he sees you. Homero defined diversity as the experience of being different. Also, diversity is about inclusion and engagement—leave no one behind. In championing diversity, every team member deserves dignity and respect. Synergy can be achieved only when everyone is working together. Everyone adds value and must have an equal opportunity to contribute and achieve. Diversity must occur at all level of the organization, and diversity solutions must be situation-specific. It is everyone’s responsibility.  Several attendees, including myself gave some input on ways to add value to your organization. To name a few: a) giving back and helping others in the organization (b) mentoring (c) sharing knowledge and experience and giving praise which helps others to build confidence.

We later discussed Change, which can be good or bad. If something works for you, don’t change, just make it better. However, some change is good, and we must adapt. We must learn to “Shake Loose” from our old ways of thinking if we wish to grow. Every person is unique and has a unique contribution to make. “Remember one size does not fit all”.  During lunch, an Inner Circle Luncheon was held in Honor of Carolyn Elman’s Retirement so that members could thank her for her service and wish her many happy fulfilling years of retirement and fun.

Its’ 4:00 o’clock, my roommate, Marlena Coggins, and I rushed back to our room to get ready for the Annual Meeting, to learn about our ABWA vision. That was followed by the Red Carpet Ceremony, featuring the Water Coolers – New York’s award-winning, singing group.

GOLDEN DOME CHAPTER RECEIVED THE ABWA

ASSOCIATION HIGHEST AWARD! The Golden Dome Chapter is a 2010 recipient of the Best Practices Award Level I. Our Chapter is the only Chapter/Express Network in the State of Georgia to have received this recognition, and is ranked at the top of all local groups in District I. Teams demonstrating Best Practices receive the official ABWA Seal of Approval in recognition of Best Practices in Group Management, from membership recruitment to providing a dynamic experience at monthly meeting through professional development programming and networking opportunities for members and guests.

Sharing the stage to receive this recognition were the following Golden members: Videssa Woods, Launa B. Bacon, Marlena Coggins, Bessie Poole, Sarah Mobley, Joyce Garrett, Patricia Smith, Jenelle Brooks Wilson, Carrol Walker, Sherry Davis, and Denise Gines. Golden Dome has received three Best Practices Awards, Level I since the Association began with this new “Buzz Word”. Prior to the Best Practices Award, Golden Dome Chapter has received twenty-three (23) Star Awards – the highest award that a Chapter/Express Network may receive. All team group members wore Red attire. We are proud to be a Best Practices Award Chapter for group management! It was a “WOW“ Moment!

2009-2010

Bright and early on Friday Morning, we headed to the Convention Center to the reports of the Annual Meeting and listen to the inspiring Keynote Speaker, Robin Crow. His topic: Evolve or Die. He shared seven steps to rethink the way you do business, along with music. Businesses that adapt the fastest to Change are the ones most likely to prosper. All ABWA members who paid for full registration headed to their District room to vote for the new Board of Directors for 2010-2011. After lunch, we returned to our seminars. Track B continued with a look at Microsoft Outlook: Time Management. Staying focus is very important in

Time Management. We must begin with a road map. Next, we build a Time Matrix – a new mindset to filter out lower offending priorities and communicate. We must make” first things first”.

See an Example:BoTime Management Matrix from Stephen Covey’s ok, “First Things

First”

Vol. 2 - Issue No. 7 WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE-Oct 2010 February 2011

Finally, the day in getting closer to the end of activities, we thought. My, we almost forgot the Annual Meeting where we would receive the results of the National Board of Directors candidates. After the winning candidates were announced, they were congratulated and installed as the new National Board of Directors for 2010 -2011. see: www.abwa.org For more info: Click on About ABWA/National Board of Directors. Moving right along, it is now Saturday, October 29, it is back to the Annual Meeting where we see the Graduation of the ABWA-KU MBA Essentials recipients receive their awards. Wayne Lee is the Keynote presenter for the early morning. What a way to start the morning off with the presentation: Live the Laughter –this was a rollicking highly interactive hypnosis show unique as it is hilarious. There were improbable scenes acted by audience members no longer inhibited by their fears. He had them doing things that were not aware of. It was a highly entertainment value with a message of empowerment that stays with you after the laughter.

One more afternoon of Track B. This time the presenter is Julie A. H. Evans, who presents Color Accounting. Color Accounting is a new way of presenting financial information that make it easier to understand. It combines a company’s balance sheet and income statement and presents them in a graphic format that use color and shapes to reflect the logic and meaning if the information presented. Marlena Coggins and Launa Bacon shared this session and learned how to get richer

Bigger, Smarter, Faster and Better. The Profit Principle is: “Everyone is unique and has a unique contribution to make profit”. Profit is about inclusive and engagement, leaving no one behind.

Also, everyone must be included in the productivity and get engaged – make a commitment to make a profit in the workplace, your Chapter, or other organizations. Understanding profits are everyone responsibility and must occur at all levels.. Profit can be achieved only when everyone is working together.

The first gold rush in U.S. history did not start in California in 1849. It was 1828, when gold was discovered in apart of the Cherokee Nation, known today as Dahlonega, GA. The town gets its name from the Cherokee

Word, talonega, meaning golden. A U.S. Branch Mint opened there in 1838, pumping out $6 million in goldcoins – over $100 million in today’s dollars. This gold was used to build the Dome on the State Capitol and thus

our Chapter was named “Golden Dome” after the State Capitol.
