Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. -Proverbs 4:25-26

As a farmer you’re no stranger to stepping off the beaten path. It’s practically in your DNA. The choices you make determine the paths you take, so maybe it makes sense for farmers to make choices that

seem unconventional to others. After all, America’s farmers make up less than 2% of the nation’s population. Yet your “unconventional” choices result in feeding and clothing not just your own families but a global community. That certainly sounds like a road less traveled.

When a particular path is less than well-worn, there’s always a good reason for it. Often it has to do with the difficulty of the path. The farming way of life is no cake walk. You don’t keep regular business hours and you don’t get paid vacations or extended holidays. Your work is long and strenuous and uncomfortable. But your path can also be extremely rewarding, fulfilling, and profitable – especially when you’ve got the right traveling companions.

At Golden Acres we understand those perks and pitfalls, because we’re on our own less-traveled road. Instead of following the national brand seed companies into focusing on a single trait platform or products that only fit the Corn Belt, we’re blazing our own trail. The fourth chapter of Proverbs tells us to fix our

gaze straight ahead and give careful thought to where we put our feet. Following that advice and keeping our focus on the farmers we serve brings us into closer alignment with you. It leads us to travel this path alongside you. And that’s exactly where we want to be.

Focusing on your needs and wants directs us to offer more choices and better options when it comes to traits and genetics. This leads us to customized seed solutions that maximize profitability on your farm. This also motivates us to give you personalized service and to have an active presence in the communities where you live and work. This draws us to walk alongside the farmers we serve, to really earn your business, and to cultivate your independence and success.

Sure, we find this road challenging. But we follow a wise Guide who said the road that leads to life is narrow and only a few find it. We trust Him to direct our steps. We know we’re on the right road and that it leads to the greatest rewards. Won’t you join us?

The choice is yours...As an independent seed company, we believe the power of choice belongs in your hands. Farming is your business. You know the challenges you face better than anyone — hungry insects, sneaky diseases and unpredictable weather are just a few of the obstacles you deal with every day. Trait technology should serve to ease your mind about those worries. It shouldn’t be another hassle as you chase down one seed seller after another looking for the combination of traits and genetics that fits your needs. Golden Acres ensures you a choice of technology platforms. We road-test technologies emerging from Bayer CropScience, Dow AgroSciences, DuPont, Monsanto, and Syngenta to match the best trait platforms with the highest yielding performance-proven genetics. The result is a wide array of insect- and herbicide-targeted traits, maturity ranges, genetic backgrounds, and seed treatments to maximize profit and minimize risk. Talk to your local Golden Acres Seed Specialist about selecting the best seed solution for your farm.

The Road Less Traveled —John Deere (1804-1886)

The name John Deere calls to mind words like success, excellence, and of course, tractors. But that would have sounded far-fetched to the overall-clad and near bankrupt blacksmith when he sold his first shop in Vermont and set out for Illinois.

Legend doesn’t agree on his inspiration. Some claim it was his childhood spent in his father’s tailor shop, where he polished and sharpened needles until they could slide through leather. Others say the idea came as he watched the polished steel of a pitchfork move through hay and soil. One thing is certain: he changed the face of farming for good when he introduced the first commercially successful cast-steel plow in 1837.

With a wrought-iron frame and a polished steel share, it cut through tough soils easily and would come to be known as “The Plow that Broke the Plains.” Word quickly spread and by 1855, Deere’s factory sold more than 10,000 such plows.

What’s the difference between drought tolerance and heat tolerance? As an independent seed company our survival depends on answering one question: What’s best for our customers? That means we can focus on some very specific agronomic characteristics that are often ignored by the “big name” seed companies that focus their time and energy on the corn belt. We spend 100% of our time identifying the characteristics that will translate to yield and profitability on your farm and delivering the hybrids that display them.Drought and heat stress tolerance are two of the most critical and misunderstood qualities necessary for growing corn and sorghum in our geography. Drought and heat stress tolerance are two separate and distinct characteristics. Although they can be related, they aren’t always found together. Drought stress tolerance has to do with delivering yield despite a lack of soil moisture, while heat tolerance has to do with yield despite excessive heat. Be wary of a seed company that only talks about drought tolerance or heat tolerance individually, or that seems to believe the two characteristics are the same. Be sure you’re working with a company that understands your needs and tests locally.Because we’re focused on providing the products that work best in your geography, most of our hybrids have a lot of heat or drought stress tolerance. And many of our hybrids have the two characteristics in combination. Check out Genuity VT Triple PRO hybrids such as Golden Acres 26V21 (115 Day), Golden Acres 27V01 (117 Day), Golden Acres 28V81 (118 Day) and Agrisure hybrids such as Catalyst brand 7007 (115 Day) and 7334 (114 Day), and Golden Acres G7573 (117 Day). All of them hold up extremely well against drought and heat.

Our products undergo a rigorous testing process based squarely in the areas where we sell seed. We don’t cherry-pick our test plots for high fertility, high moisture areas. We test under the toughest growing conditions. And we publish the results. Our market area grew exponentially this year and so did our testing program. This year we tested 20-30 hybrids per plot in 34 GATE Plots located across 6 states to provide you with local data you can trust.

From intensive in-house yield and performance trials to independent university tests, our performance-tested hybrids are tough enough for the region where they’re grown. It’s no coincidence that our hybrids even win in our competitors’ test plots.

2013 Golden Acres GATE Plot LocationsGATE = Golden Acres Technology Evaluation

Local testing is the key to good data...Our customers tell us Golden Acres corn and grain sorghum hybrids outperform seed products from some of the “national” seed companies under tough growing conditions. We can’t say we’re surprised. Those companies may talk big about their latest “local hybrids” but those products are often developed and tested in the “easy” soils of Iowa or Illinois.

The Road Less Traveled —The Morrill Act of 1862The roots of U.S. agricultural extension go back to the early years of the country. There were agricultural clubs after the American Revolution and the first Farm Journal was published in 1810, its pages filled with good ideas alongside worthless ones. Farmers needed a credible source of locally-focused research and information.

The Morrill Act of 1862 established land-grant universities to educate citizens in agriculture, home economics, mechanical arts, and other practical professions. This is now known as the Cooperative Extension Service, a partnership between agricultural colleges and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Its purpose was to develop practical applications of research knowledge and help farmers adapt this knowledge and technology through practical demonstrations and instruction.

Over the last century, the U.S. agricultural extension has adapted to changing times and continues to address a wide range of human, plant, and animal needs in both urban and rural environments.

Golden Giving supports Farming Communities

Farmers do miraculous work. Today’s farmers grow twice as much food as their parents did - using less land, energy, water and fewer emissions. America’s corn farmers produce about 40 percent of the world’s corn, using only 20 percent of the total area harvested in the world. Every day, America’s farm families rise to meet the challenge of feeding and clothing the world. To these men and women the land is more than a livelihood - it’s a legacy. It’s a resource to be cared for, preserved, improved, and passed to the next generation.

We have a deep appreciation for farmers and the farming community, and we believe in giving back to farming families in a way that supports them locally. The Golden Giving program is one of the ways that we do that. We partner with our resellers and growers to donate funds to local churches in the communities where our customers live and work. Last year fifty-six churches received Golden Giving contributions. We feel blessed to partner with these farming families as they support their local ministries. To learn more, visit www.GAseed.com.

The Road Less Traveled —Luther Burbank (1849-1926)

How does a farm-reared, elementary-educated child, the thirteenth of fifteen children, grow to develop more than 800 new strains and varieties of plants? For Luther Burbank, the answer seems to have been innovation and an insatiable curiosity about the world.

Burbank started his crossbreeding experiments on a 4-acre plot of land in Santa Rosa, California. He received several grants from the Carnegie Institute to support his ongoing research in hybridization, despite criticism by his scientific contemporaries, who complained Burbank was not “scientific” enough in his method. It’s true he was less precise in his record keeping and was more interested in results than basic research. However, his results were undeniable.

Burbank’s work spurred the passing of the 1930 Plant Patent Act, which made it possible to patent new varieties of plants. Thomas Edison testified in support of the legislation, stating,”This will, I feel sure, give us many Burbanks.”

15 Refuge reduced, simplified with Genuity and agrisure viptera trait stacks

The road less traveled brings you more options than ever, especially when it comes to stewardship and refuge compliance. Genuity SmartStax RIB Complete and Genuity Double PRO RIB Complete offer the convenience of a single-bag refuge solution. Farmers planting either RIB Complete trait in designated corn-growing areas can forgo planting a separate refuge. It’s already in the bag.

In designated cotton-growing areas the refuge requirement is cut from 50 percent down to 20 percent for fields planted with Genuity VT Triple PRO or Agrisure Viptera 3111 hybrids. The dual modes of insect control provided by these performance-proven traits against targeted above-ground pests serve to reduce the likelihood of insect resistance. This provides enhanced trait durability and allows for reduced refuge acres for corn farmers in cotton-growing areas. For a complete explanation of refuge requirements, be sure to ask your Golden Acres Seed Specialist, or consult the official Insect Resistance Management (IRM) Guide.

The Road Less Traveled —George Washington Carver (1864-1943)

Scientist, botanist, educator, inventor - of the many words associated with George Washington Carver, perhaps peanuts is the closest. But Carver brought a much more ubiquitous development with the introduction of crop rotation.

Together with other agricultural experts, Carver urged farmers to restore nitrogen to their soils by practicing systematic crop rotation. Following this practice resulted in improved yields and gave farmers alternative cash crops. To train farmers to successfully rotate and cultivate new crops, Carver helped develop the agricultural extension program for Alabama. He even distributed recipes using the alternative crops to encourage better nutrition in the South and broader adaptation of the rotation practice.

Carver reputedly discovered three hundred uses for peanuts and hundreds more for soybeans, pecans, and sweet potatoes. But it was his advocacy for crop rotation that continues to affect the lives of nearly every single farmer to this day.

B.t. corn Refuge(non-B.t. corn)

First generation B.t. technologies require traditional refuge structures

If you plant a hybrid(s) other than our Genuity or Viptera corn hybrids, you must plant at least a 50 percent refuge in cotton-growing areas, or 20 percent in corn-growing areas. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that growers plant a refuge as part of an Insect Resistance Management (IRM) plan when they use B.t. hybrids.

Insect Resistance Management is critical for preventing the development of insect resistance to the biotech trait in the B.t. hybrid. The refuge must contain a similar non-B.t. hybrid as to the rest of the field. Technology suppliers use third parties to conduct audits and monitor compliance of refuge requirements, whether by phone or personal visits. During an audit, technology suppliers assess a grower’s adherence to the required refuge size, distance and treatment requirements. Growers who are out of compliance may be penalized. Refuge requirements vary by product and planting location. Use the guide below to help, or ask your Golden Acres Seed Specialist if you have questions. A copy of the complete IRM Guide is also available on our website at www.GAseed.com.

Important: Ratings are based on the average performance of a hybrid grown over a wide range of climate and soil types within its adapted maturity under normal growing conditions. Extreme conditions may adversely affect performance. Consult your local Golden Acres Genetics Seed Specialist for specific product recommendations.Relative Maturity Days: Compare normal maturity days differences between hybrids. Actual days may vary considerably from those shown due to growing degree unit accumulations. Growing Degree Unit (GDU) accumulation may vary within the geographic region as a result of temperature and environmental variations.Recommended Final Population: Optimum corn populations vary with soil type, climate and management practices. Use our recommended population as a relative guide to planting, based on your farming experience and management level.Remember to increase planting rates approximately 10% above your desired final population.

a growing grain sorghum lineup you can count onGolden Acres has been the name to trust in grain sorghum since 1952. We’ve spent more than sixty years developing a sorghum line-up that consistently yields higher than our competitors even in the toughest growing conditions. Our customers stick with us, because they continue to get top performance from a legacy line of sorghum hybrids.

Taking risks on new opportunities to merge traditional service with advancing technology is how we’ve made it past the sixty year mark. That’s why we purchased the Syngenta Seeds, Inc. portfolio of sorghum products last year. The acquisition added several new grain sorghum, forage sorghum and sorghum sudan hybrids that were previously marketed by Syngenta’s Garst, Golden Harvest, and NK brands. At a time when other seed companies are exiting the sorghum market we’ve found ourselves on the road less traveled once again. The products we folded into our lineup were met with tremendous reception from growers both old and new.

We’re very proud of our sorghum line up. The continued expansion of our sorghum portfolio means we can offer you the broadest range of high performing hybrids. We’ve also expanded our market footprint to include the High Plains areas of Kansas and Nebraska. Our sorghum lineup is one more way of providing custom seed solutions that cultivate independence and success.

The Road Less Traveled —Joseph Glidden (1813-1906)

It’s tough to imagine the rural American landscape without the barbed wire fence, especially across the Southwest. And even stranger to think that a Yankee invented it.

Joseph Glidden, originally of New Hampshire, used a coffee mill to create barbs which he placed along one wire. He then twisted another wire around the first to keep the barbs in place. He received the patent for barbed wire in 1874 and was promptly embroiled in a legal battle over whether he actually invented it. He won out in the end, and created the Barbed Fence Company.

To demonstrate the effectiveness of barbed wire, Glidden and his sales agent for the State of Texas, Henry B. Sanborn, developed the “Frying Pan Ranch” where they ran a herd of 12,000 cattle branded with the “Panhandle Brand.” The ranch proved the success of the wire and changed ranching. Glidden may not have been the very first to suspend spiky wires between two fence posts, but his innovative design is the standard pattern still in use today.

The Road Less Traveled —Charles Hart & Charles Parr

(1872-1937) (1868-1941)

Farming and tractors go hand in hand, but without the work of Charles Walter Hart and Charles H. Parr we might use a different word instead.

Hart and Parr met in college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where the two men quickly became friends. They worked together on a Special Honors Thesis to build three working internal combustion engines. Following their graduation, the pair formed the Hart-Parr Gasoline Engine Company. Lack of funds almost put an end to their project, but they found an investor and forged on.

Hart-Parr number 1 was completed in 1902. Customers did not immediately beat the proverbial path to their door. The founders were patient, running demonstrations at county fairs and other events. Little by little, the company began to gain customers, then followers, then fans.

In 1906, Hart and Parr decided the words traction engine were too vague and long to be used in press releases. As a combination of traction and power, the word “Tractor” was born.
