Spring 2011

Since its inception in 2005, when LAICO Industries and Services started up the secured document shredding business Classified Shredding Services (CSS), we have been actively engaged in the “green” initiative.

Now serving 506 customers with pick-up service to over 700 locations, CSS has been averaging more than 50% growth per year. Our fleet serves a significant geographic area. In 2010, discarded office paper shredded to total 584 tons, with over 1,500 tons of paper shredded

since 2005. The shredded paper is made into 1,500 lb. bales, and sold to paper mills that de-ink and process it to produce recycled paperboard for cereal boxes and home tissue products.

The shredding of confidential documents serves several purposes. First and foremost, it protects the information of businesses and private citizens, a critical service needed to reduce the threat of identity theft. Secondly, by shredding and recycling, we are eliminating hundreds of tons of waste material that would eventually end

up in landfills and take years to decompose. In a related venture in 2008, LAICO partnered with a local company, My Digital Office, to offer digital capturing of documents by scanning for secure storage and retrieval. Customers of the scanning operation are extremely impressed with the lightening fast search and retrieval of their scanned documents.

HeartlinesTwo Lifetime Employees Celebrate 25 Years of ServiceLinda Coleman In July 1985, Linda joined the Lifetime Assistance family as a therapy aide. Today, she is the Residence Manager at the Hollybrook home. “I took advantage of what I thought was an opportunity to enrich the lives of people with disabilities. Instead I found my own life enriched,” explains Linda. “The individuals I have worked with have taught me the importance of enjoying each day and appreciating the opportunity each day brings.”

Cynthia DievendorfIn 1985, Cindy joined Lifetime as a Residence Counselor at the home on English Road residence just as it opened. “When I started, there were just 4 residences,” explains Cynthia. “I can’t believe how many there are today. Working in the Residence program has given me the opportunity to watch many people grow and fulfill their dreams.”

Congratulations to...Richard Anderson Richard Anderson joined Lifetime Assistance in January 2008 as a Residence Manager of the Leibeck home. In April 2011, Richard was promoted to Associate Director of Lifetime’s Community Services Department. Prior to joining Lifetime Assistance, Richard was employed at Heritage Christian Services.

Throughout the pages of this Lifetimes, you can feel the energy of an active and vibrant Lifetime community, extensively engaged in community betterment, caring and commerce on many levels. From actively participating in our nation’s green revolution with very impressive environmental results (see sidebar, page five), to political action with high level state officials and President Obama (!); to Kodak, HSBC, United Way and Lifetime Assistance employees pitching in, in a big way, to make our homes, gardens and neighborhoods shine. Add to this, the amazing news of nearly 70 jobs created through Lifetime’s shredding and scanning ventures, providing meaningful employment to individuals with disabilities and supporting area businesses, and the progress is something to behold.

Despite a difficult economy and funding pressures, be assured that Lifetime remains true to our mission of providing exceptional services. Increasingly, we will be looking to our friends and neighbors who believe in dignified lives and choices for individuals with developmental disabilities, to speak out in the public and legislative arenas. We have come so far – New York’s community based, non-profit services are the envy of the nation – and together we will stand strong on unyielding principles, to assure meaningful, quality lives for New York’s citizens with developmental disabilities.

To our wonderfully generous and inclusive Lifetime community, we extend our deep gratitude and seek your continued involvement and support. You are brightening lives and improving our world. Thank you.

Taking Action in Albany!

On February 15th, a group of 16 individuals, including members of “The Powers That Be” Self-Advocate Group, traveled to Albany as part of NYSACRA’s “Legislative Day” to advocate for services for people with developmental disabilities.

The group included Lifetime staff, individuals receiving services from Lifetime and their families. The group met with Senators George Maziarz and Joseph Robach and Assemblymen Stephen Hawley and Harry Bronson to discuss the 2011-2012 Executive Budget Legislation. The group made presentations on important

topics including continuing residential development, recruiting and maintaining direct support staff, fair wages and their concerns about potential funding cuts.

Among those speaking were Hollybrook resident, Bob Day, North Greece residents, Amoad Hanna and Erica Tartaglia and Carl Grayson of Brighton. Carl, President of “The Powers That Be,” expressed concerns and the possible ramifications of cutting funds and discontinuing vital services.

Thuan Nguyen, an individual who attends Air Park Day Services, wrote President Obama to share his concerns. Thuan expressed many concerns including the safe return of our troops, unemployment, quality health insurance and the needs of people with disabilities. He was pleasantly surprised by the President’s response.

Dear Mr. President

Lifetime Assistance has taken the pledge to support the Golisano Foundation and Special Olympics of the Genesee Region to promote a more inclusive community for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

In March, the “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign was launched in conjunction with National Disability Awareness Month. The campaign encourages people to stop using the words “retard” and “retarded” and replace both with the word “respect.” People across the country can take the pledge by visiting www.r-word.org.

Ann Costello, Director of the Golisano Foundation, was encouraged by the positive response to the campaign. She explains, “While I expected the agencies that serve people with developmental disabilities to participate in the campaign, I was thrilled by the number of events sponsored by local businesses and area schools.”

Please join us and take the pledge at www.r-word.org

This business operates under the name, Lifetime Document Management (LDM) and currently serves more than 80 customers including car dealers, real estate and financial services, and manufacturing firms. Lifetime Document Management and Classified Shredding Services complement each other, with both services catering to customers that need their documents stored and retrieved digitally and destroyed through secure shredding. Many of our accounts utilize both services, creating a true single source provider. After documents are scanned, Lifetime Document Management generates approximately one ton of paper per week to Classified Shredding Services for secure shredding.

The big story in all of this is the creation of local jobs. Marty Reeners, Director of Vocational Services and General Manager of LAICO Industries and Services

explains, “Based on the nature and function of the work required by Lifetime Document Management, adults with greater physical challenges can perform many of the required tasks, creating new opportunities for many individuals. Our dedicated employees make a personal commitment to each customer and individually personify the spirit of ‘Going Green.’ ”

In 2010, 68 people were employed by CSS and LDM with 75% being workers with developmental disabilities.

If you are a business owner and would like a quote, give Classified Shredding Ser vices and Lifetime Document Management a call. Help your business. Help your community! Contact Marty Reeners at (585) 748-3188 or e-mail [email protected]

We are so fortunate to have such a compassionate and giving community that understands the courage and aspirations of children and adults with developmental disabilities. As Lifetime Assistance continues to face the inevitable changes underway from state and federal agencies, including significant restrictions for capital expenditures, it becomes increasingly important for the Foundation to strengthen its financial resources. The Foundation

team and its Board of Directors are actively engaged in identifying and developing opportunities to address these changes.

A great deal of care and cost goes into maintaining the residential and day habilitation properties so that they reflect the pride of the neighborhood and the residents who live there. Providing homes that are high quality in structure, appearance, safety and accessibility are a key priority for Lifetime Assistance. There are many ways and programs to offer your financial support. All gifts great and small will help us continue our important work. I invite you to make a donation in the attached envelop or give me a call at (585) 784-5006 to discuss other options. Diana and Steven Macomber joined the Lifetime Assistance family in 2006, when they moved into the North Greece apartments. Their parents Charles and Elaine chose Lifetime because of the quality of care and the freedom and choices Lifetime offered their children. “We wanted them to grow as individuals and be able to stand on their own two feet,” explains Elaine.

Diana recently enrolled in supportive employment services and spends many days volunteering. Steven has held a position at Pizza Hut on Chili Avenue for more than ten years. “It’s been wonderful to watch them develop new life skills and hobby interests. We credit Lifetime Assistance for their success,” said Charles. As part of their commitment to Lifetime Assistance, Charles and Elaine bequeathed a gift to the Foundation that will benefit their children and others who rely on us to continue providing quality programs and services well into the future.

If you would like to learn more about making an estate gift to the Foundation, please contact Mary Howard at (585) 784-5006.

Lifetime is…“lovin’ it”On February 16th, the Ronald McDonald House awarded Lifetime Assistance Foundation a $5,000 grant to support the Family Reimbursement Program. The Family Reimbursement Program has helped hundreds of children and their families obtain financial support for basic necessities, often things most of us take for granted. In March, the Family Reimbursement program provided clothing for a young girl with Cerebral Palsy and intellectual disabilities. In addition to clothing, her Occupational Therapist recommended a replacement lift for her shoe. The lift will help her balance and provide her with support.

Ronald McDonald House Charities supports the health and well-being of children and their families in the broader Rochester community by awarding grants supported through the McDonald’s restaurant canisters and national promotions.

An Ocean of Opportunity: Linda Rhoda

A Work of Art David Zipeto has been attending the Animatus Studio workshop every Saturday morning for more than 10 years. Currently, David is using animation to tell a story about Obsessive Compulsive Disorders. Local schools are interested in using David’s animations to teach students about the disorder.

David Zipeto and Mike Boas (Animatus Staff)

The first question that Linda used to ask her job coach when she arrived to work at LAICO each morning at LAICO was “when can I go home?” Thanks to the supportive encouragement, Linda’s confidence improved, as did her interest in her own future. Soon she began to ask “when can I get a job in the community?”

In 1994, Linda applied for a job at Red Lobster and has never looked back. For the past 17 years Linda has been gainfully employed, preparing tables for customers and updating the special menu. Her husband drives her to work every morning so she is always on time and ready to go. In addition, Linda receives job support and coaching from Lifetime Assistance.

“Linda’s a valued member of our team”, explains Tom the manager of Red Lobster. “She consistently helps us to deliver a great guest experience and her loyalty and dedication to the restaurant is deeply appreciated.”

Linda is one of the 180 successful employees receiving job coaching support through Lifetime Assistance Supported Employment Services. For more information, please contact Shawn Wilson, Coordinator of Vocational Rehabilitation at (585) 426-4120 x3415 or via email at [email protected]

Lifetime Assistance congratulates Linda on 17 years of superb performance and wishes her continued success.

Members of Regional Transit Service (RTS) is partnering with LAICO Industries & Services, to inform and teach employees about how to ride the bus and enjoy the benefits of using public transportation. Students from the Brockport High School Transition program (through BOCES) have participated in the training as well.

RTS recently demonstrated a fully accessible bus and provided bus rides at Paul Road. Groups boarded the bus and received an orientation by Millie Rosa, RGRTA Customer Service Representative before taking a short trip. The bus driver asked one member of each group to pull the notification cord to notify the driver of a stop request. The participants were very impressed by the accessibility and comfort of the bus and look forward to future training and the opportunity to utilize RTS for future transportation. Lifetime Assistance encourages all employees who have an interest in learning the transportation system, to contact Shawn Wilson at (585) 426-4120 x3415 or via email at [email protected]
