Deuteronomy 15 Lending to the Poor

7 “If there is a poor man with you, one of your brothers, in any of your towns in your land which 

your God is giving you, 

; 8 but you shall freely open your hand to him, and shall generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks.Lending vs. Giving:‐ The truly disabled and destitute (orphans, widows) need charity‐ The “working poor” may need resources to enable them toprovide for their families by using the talents and work that God provides.

9 Beware that there is no base thought in your heart, saying, ‘The  the year of remission, is near,’ and your eye is hostile toward your poor brother, and you give him nothing; then he may cry to  against you, and it will be a sin in you. 

Lending to the Poor

A sin not to Lend?Deuteronomy 15 1 “At the end of every seven years you shall grant a remission of debts. 2 This is the manner of remission: every creditor shall release what he has loaned to his neighbor; he shall not exact it of his neighbor and his brother, because the Lord’s remission has been proclaimed.‐ Sin: refusing to do what God had commanded

Lending to the Poor

Yehovah Guarantees the Loan:‐ Another instance of God promising blessing for helping the poor‐ The blessing of your “work” and “undertakings” willmore than make up for any loss from a loan of obedience

‐ Double Word Emphasis: נתון ”to give, you shall give“ :תתן 2 Corinthians 9:7  Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Commandment to Provide:‐ Government programs will never end poverty‐ Helping the poor is to respond affirmatively to a commandment‐ Brother: Family‐ Poor in the Land: Members of the assembly (native & alien)

Faith in Lending:‐ God will bless in lieu of monetary interest ‐What would happen if we did this today!?

Faith in Lending:‐ God lists interest free lending as a sign of righteousness‐ God substitutes a promise of His favor in lieu of cash interest‐ Poor: Rely on God to meet their needs (in part) by the obedience of His people to His commandments

‐Wealthy: Demonstrate their reliance on God by giving and lending their money

‐ God is their source of blessing to the rich and poor alike

Faith in Lending:‐ Do not keep a poor man’s collateral‐ They need all that they have‐ God’s promises to the lender are sufficient collateral

Commandment to Provide:‐ Yeshua affirms the principles given in Deuteronomy 15‐ He is encouraging His followers to fulfill the law

, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount.

Commandment to Provide:‐ Lend without being resentful if you are not paid back‐ God will reward your generosity to those in need (in His way)
