Sunday Worship Schedule
8:00 a.m. in the Chapel
10:00 a.m. in the Church
Dear Friends in Christ,
As we enter the month of
September, there is a wide range of
worship, ministry and service
opportunities available. Let me
highlight some:
On September 9, at 5:00 p.m.,
Emanuel will host “Building on Faith,
"the opening event for the Habitat
for Humanity-led, collaborative
effort to build two new homes in
Frog Hollow. Please join us.
Also, that same evening at 7:00 p.m.,
Joy Elwell and other nurses will meet
to develop plans for the new Parish
Health Ministry. This beneficial,
congregational ministry will be
introduced on Sunday, October 18,
the Festival of St. Luke, the Physician.
See details on page 6.
Lots of excitement will be in the air
on Sunday, September 13 as all our
young people and their teachers
begin a new year of Sunday School.
That morning, teachers will be
commissioned, prayer pillows
presented to our three year-olds and
the congregation will be united in
prayer for all of God’s children.
During the month of September, we
will have the privilege and joy of
celebrating the baptisms of two
precious little ones, Leila Janae
Roman on September 6 and Aubrey
Linnea Liljedahl on September 20.
As Vicar Dominic transitions from
intern to Ministerial Assistant, I
extend our thanks to Lee Sherman,
chairperson, and the other members
of the Intern Committee for a job
very well-done!
Among other areas of ministry, Vicar
Dominic has been working with our
high school youth group. For the
New England Synod Hammonasset
Gathering, (September 11-13), an
annual event of 800+ youth
throughout the New England Synod,
Emanuel will have 15 of our youth,
along with 6 adults attending. What
a great way to follow-up our
participation in the National Youth
Gathering in Detroit and to jump-
start the new school year!
This month in worship, we’ll have the
final of our five-week focus on
Hebrews, then turn to Genesis: first
for a two-week, theme, “Laughing
with God,” based on the story of
Sarah when told that she and
Abraham would have a son; then
we’ll finish the month with “Jacob
Wrestling with God.” Come and
Worship!
Plan to attend the Special
Congregational Meeting, Sunday,
September 13, following the 10:00
a.m. service. See the related article
on page 8.
Be sure to be at church, Sunday,
September 27 to enjoy the special
coffee hour hosted by our high
school youth and to hear and see
what they experienced and learned
at the National Youth Gathering in
Detroit.
Emanuel will prepare and serve the
evening meal on Tuesday, September
29 as part of the Manna Meals,
ecumenical program for and with the
homeless. See details in Becki
Murphy’s article on page 7.
Coming to Emanuel in October—
both Bishop Hazelwood and the
Presiding Bishop of the ELCA, Bishop
Elizabeth Eaton. Bishop Eaton will
speak at a public event at Emanuel,
on Monday evening, October 19.
Plan to be there!
As a community of faith, gathered by
God’s grace around the crucified,
risen Lord Jesus, we live and serve
together. May God’s Spirit continue
to enrich and empower us in
ministry.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Corgan

“Inside and Out . . . We’re
all in God’s story!!
by Natalie Bloomquist
That’s the theme for our program
year. Everyone has a story and
everyone loves to hear stories. The
best story of all is the one Big Story,
that Story of God's desire to share
God’s Forever Happiness. The good
news is that all of us can find
ourselves in that one Big Story!
Sunday School starts
September 13!
During worship we’ll hear a very
special story about what God can do
with God’s amazing love - and how
sometimes we just have to laugh
along with God. Also during
worship: Preschoolers will receive
their Prayer Pillows. Many thanks to
Judy Johnson for lovingly sewing
Prayer Pillows for our incoming 3
year olds. They will each receive a
personalized pillow to cuddle with as
they talk to Jesus.
3rd
Graders will receive their SPARK
Bibles. These Student Bibles are
specially designed to help children
and their parents become more
comfortable
navigating through
God’s Big Story.
After the children’s
message, the
children will go to
their classrooms to
get to know their
teachers and fellow classmates. This
will also be an opportunity to
experience the routine of their
classroom and all the fun ways they
will learn about God’s love.
Emanuel continues to follow the
Narrative Lectionary, so we will
again take advantage of the
opportunity for all ages to explore
the same Bible story each Sunday. A
combination of Spark curriculum and
written lessons will engage our
children with those stories of God’s
amazing love for everyone and will
nurture their relationship with God.
Caring teachers and aides
accompany the children through
interactive lessons where they
experience God’s unconditional love
and what that love means in their
lives.
Introducing this year’s group of
amazing teachers:
Preschool – Kindergaren: Elizabeth
Kieschnick and Jim Flanders, Becki
Murphy
Grades 1 and 2: Natalie Fulmer,
Hilarie Orton
Grades 3 and 4: Deepak and
Mrudula Pedada, Shannon Graulich
Grade 5: Linnea Bloomquist, TBA
First Communion instruction will be
offered to the 3rd
graders in the
spring. They will receive their First
Communion during the Maundy
Thursday worship service.
If you have not returned the
“Covenant for Continuing
Partnership in Faith Education”
that was e-mailed to Sunday School
families during the first week of
August, please do so as soon as
possible. This gives vital information
to the teachers and helps them
provide a comfortable and safe
environment for your children. The
updated parental permission is also
necessary to comply with our Safe
Church Policy. Let me know if you
need me to re-send the Covenant to
you.
Reminder: the box of Sunday School
offering envelopes received last
January has envelopes for each
Sunday through December 2015.
Preschoolers will receive envelopes
on the first day of class.
Over the last several years it has
become increasingly difficult to

work that needs to be done to
present the Nativity Festival as it
has traditionally been presented.
Acknowledging everyone’s busy
schedules, we will not be having a
traditional Nativity Festival this year.
We will still proclaim the good news
of the birth of our Savior, but there
will be changes that address the
current situation. We are in the
process of developing these changes
and welcome any thoughts or
questions.
by Natalie Bloomquist
We learn in the stories of the Bible
that God is all about relationship.
Confirmation ministry at Emanuel is
an intergenerational ministry that
offers youth and their parents the
opportunity to explore their
relationship with God
and ask what difference
that relationship makes
in their lives.
Middle School youth are working on
creating a sense of identity and
independence. Yet we forget that
adults still have great influence in
their lives. Early adolescents’ words
and actions may tell you that they
don’t care or don’t need you, but
they’re still watching (sometimes
unconsciously), trying to make
meaning of their faith by observing
the adults and how the adults live
out of their faith. Any time adults
can be more intentional in sharing
their faith journey the more youth
will feel equipped to take the faith
journey on their own.
We received lots of positive and
grateful comments about last year’s
schedule of gathering only two times
a month and including parents. We
also received support for increasing
our time by fifteen minutes to allow
for more games and time for youth-
alone and parents-alone discussion.
So, we’ll still begin promptly at 7:00
p.m. but we will now end at 8:15
p.m.
Confirmation begins October 7!
Each week we will focus on the
upcoming Sunday’s Bible story,
exploring together how we find
ourselves in that story and how we
can make meaning of it for our daily
lives. We’ll make connections with
God’s other stories in the Bible,
Lutheran theology and Martin
Luther’s Small Catechism to help
us nourish our relationship with
God. And we'll have fun doing it!
We'll play games, watch videos,
create art, and get to know each
other better.
The Confirmation Schedule
(including gatherings on the first and
third Wednesdays of the month, the
November Overnight, the Calumet
Confirmation Camp) and the
Acolyte/Crucifer Schedule were
emailed to families last month.
Youth and parents will work
together throughout the year to
identity additional service
opportunities.
Sixth Grade
September 30 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
in Luther Hall: all 6th graders and
their parents (siblings are welcome)
attend dinner in preparation for
Confirmation ministry.
We will:
• prep Bibles for presentation
during worship on October 4;
• train for Acolyte and Crucifer
ministry;
• enjoy fellowship and
conversation.
Details and request for RSVP were
shared in an August 13 email.
October 4 during 10:00 a.m.
worship: 6th
graders receive their
Lutheran Study Bibles.
It’s going to be another great year!
NINE Prayer Friends Needed!
by Natalie Bloomquist
Each student in Emanuel’s
Confirmation ministry has a secret
Prayer Friend who remains with him
or her throughout the three years of
confirmation instruction. Through
prayer, the Prayer Friend has an
impact on the life of the student
through intercession to God. Prayer
Friends pray regularly for their
assigned confirmation student and
send simple correspondence and
special wishes on birthdays,
baptismal anniversaries and
holidays. Their identity remains a
secret for three years until they are
revealed just days before
Affirmation of Baptism Sunday.
Would you consider serving as a
prayer friend? Early adolescence is a
difficult time, and the academic and
social pressures society places on
our middle school youth are
tremendous. You can make a
difference in their lives by keeping
them intentionally in prayer and
reminding them that Jesus is with
them always, and that they are in
your thoughts and, most
importantly, your prayers.
The benefits of this ministry flow
both ways. God created us to be in
relationship with others, and this
ministry not only brings joy to both
the Prayer Friend and the
confirmation youth but also meaning
and a depth of faith that comes from
regular, simple, down-to-earth
prayer.
There is no standard profile for a
Prayer Friend! They are individuals,
couples, families and friends
teaming together to serve. All are
important and meaningful partners
in this ministry.
Please call, e-mail or speak with me
at church for more information or to
offer your service.

Nurses, we need you: Our New
Parish Health Ministry begins on
Sunday, October 18, the Festival
of St. Luke, the Physician.
If you are a Registered Nurse or
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse,
Emanuel needs you! We are
beginning a Parish Health Ministry
here and invite you to participate,
sharing your gift of healing.
We will have a Planning Meeting on
Wednesday, September 9, at 7:00
p.m., in Luther Hall to discuss this
new ministry, the services we can
offer to Emanuel, and the
community. Refreshments will be
served. Bring your ideas and help us
get started. RSVP to Joy Elwell at
Faith Budget
The faith budget is that portion of
our operating budget that both
enables Emanuel to meet its ministry
commitments and provides
opportunity for each us to share over
and above our regular pledges.
For 2015, the budget approved at
the annual meeting includes a faith
budget line item of $37,000.
The Church Council and I want you to
be aware of this, trusting that some
of you will begin to make donations
as you're able. For some, I know,
there is little or no discretionary
money available in your personal
budget. For many others of us, that is
not the case. Please consider this
need and opportunity prayerfully and
share as generously.

Calling all those interested in
stitchery!
With the help of Karin Gottier, we
would like to sew up to 10 bags to
complete the "coffee ladies"
traditional outfits at the St. Lucia
reception. Karin has the material and
will be in Luther Hall Thursday,
September 17 at 9:45 a.m. to cut the
material for these simple black bags
with sewn-on red hearts. Please
bring your pinking sheers. You will
see a sample and be able to work on
this at home. We will have another
meeting, a month later, Thursday,
October 15 in Luther Hall at 9:45
a.m. to collect or give assistance to
anyone who wants more
guidance. Please call me at home
and leave a message if you are
interested. If you can't come, but
would like to help out call me and
we'll arrange a time to meet. Thanks,
Lisa Martin 860-523-1530.
"Above all, maintain constant love

From Becki Murphy,
Coordinator of Ministries
It’s been 3 months since I began this
newly created position here at
Emanuel as Coordinator of
Ministries. It’s been a time of
listening and planning for the year
ahead. I am pleased with the
quantity and variety of gatherings
colleagues and I were able to
coordinate during these busy
summer months. As the year
progresses I hope to focus more
attention on ways that I can help
others share their faith stories using
different mediums. If you look on
Emanuel’s Facebook Page you’ll see
the beginning of this by viewing the
1-minute video I posted on August 5
with photos and voice recordings
from some of Emanuel’s youth who
attended this Summer’s ELCA Youth
Gathering in Detroit.
Re-cap of Summer 2015 Group
Gatherings:
• There have been and continue to
be opportunities to gather
together and talk with Pastor
Corgan about strengths and
weaknesses of Emanuel as well as
hear directly from him about
Vision 2020. Sign-ups for
September and October
conversations are in Luther Hall.
• About 30 people of all ages
gathered to watch the movie,
Nim’s Island with Abigail Breslin in
air-conditioned Luther Hall on the
evening of July 19. My teammate
for planning this gathering was
Director of Education, Natalie
Bloomquist.
• About 25 adults gathered at my
home in West Hartford on July 26
for fellowship and fun. Vicar
Dominic helped kick off our
evening together with prayer and
thoughts about how and where
the early followers of Jesus
gathered.
• Eileen Mitchell generously opened
her backyard and pool for an
evening BBQ and end-of-summer
pool party on Sunday, August 23.
• And, in response to the concern
people have shared during this
summer’s group conversations
related to the lack of support for
newcomers, Pastor mailed dinner
invitations to all new members,
‘sponsoring friends’ and staff for
August 30 in Luther Hall.
My goal is to work with others to
provide at least one group gathering
opportunity each month outside of
our typical Sunday coffee hour. Your
attendance at these gatherings is
welcomed as it’s the first step in
cultivating an active faith community
here at Emanuel. Thus, I hope that as
the year progresses there will be a
handful of opportunities to gather
that connect with you and you’ll
choose to add them to your
calendar. Meanwhile, if you have
any ideas for a gathering, I’d love to
hear from you!
Sign-ups for the following Fall group
gatherings are in Luther Hall
or by emailing me at
1. September 23 from 10:30 a.m. -
12:30 p.m. in Luther Hall - looking
for ‘chefs’ and ‘sous chefs’ of all
ages and their friends to help
prepare casseroles we’ll
freeze prior to the quarterly Hands
on Hartford MANNA Meal Emanuel
hosts on September 29.
2. September 29 from 5:00 p.m. -
8:30 p.m. at Christ Church
Cathedral - looking for volunteers
of all ages and friends to meet at
45 Church Street to help serve a
MANNA Meal dinner.
3. October 3 is Emanuel’s Day of
Service and Church by the Pond at
2:00 p.m. - looking for volunteers
of all ages and friends to prepare
brown bag lunches and deliver
them to Bushnell Park for 2:00
p.m. Please contact Vicar Dominic
or Chet Brodnicki at 860-236-3050
if interested. See article on front
cover.
4. November 15 - luncheon in Luther
Hall to share a summary of
strengths and weaknesses
highlighted in Pastor Corgan’s
conversations as well as a show
and tell of Emanuel’s social media
sites.

From our Minister of Music,
Jonathan Reuning-Scherer:
Over the past few months, I’ve been
talking with the Worship and Music
Committee and the choirs about the
possible purchase of a new piano for
the sanctuary. Our current Steinway
7 foot grand is almost 35 years old,
built during an era when Steinway
was owned by Coca-Cola – it’s a good
piano, but not the best Steinway, and
somewhat underpowered given the
size of our space. I’ve felt since I
arrived that we would greatly benefit
from a 9 foot concert instrument.
It would enhance our worship and
musical life for years to come.
However, these instruments are
usually well over $100,000.
We have a unique opportunity to
purchase an excellent new
instrument. After discounts and the
trade-in value of our current piano,
the net cost is $31,000. Council has
met and approved $15,000 from the
Music Endowment Fund toward the
purchase price, assuming we can
raise the additional $16,000. I have
firm commitments for $2,800 and
many others have expressed
interest. If you’d like to support this
project, make your tax-deductible
contribution to Emanuel Lutheran
Church and write “Piano Fund” on
the comment line.
Soli Dei Gloria!

Special Meeting
O F T H E
C O N G R E G AT I O N
Sunday, September 13
A special meeting of the
congregation has been called
for Sunday, September 13,
2015 following the 10:00 a.m.
worship service in the church
nave. The purpose of this
special meeting is to consider
and vote on a resolution to
approve additional funds for
the North wall masonry
restoration project.
The preliminary project budget,
approved by the congregation
at a special meeting on March
15, was estimated at
$125,000. The severity of the
masonry deterioration on this
exterior wall (and the
consequent need to install
temporary shoring during
restoration work) has pushed
the budget well beyond original
estimates, which included only
marginal contingency. The new
numbers are based on detail
pricing from our contractor and
engineer along with reasonable
contingency. It should be
noted again that this work is
necessary in order to reinstall
the stained glass windows.
Finance Committee is working
on the details of how to fund
this needed amount.
Please plan on attending this
important meeting. Questions
prior to the meeting may be
directed to Mike Nowak or
Jane Wunder.
Luther Hall Kitchen
Over the past year, we’ve had
occasion to welcome local
organizations like Billings Forge and
Hartford Food System in to use our
Luther Hall kitchen to prepare food
for their charitable events. It is so
nice to receive compliments on our
kitchen - a reminder of how blessed
we are to have such facilities and
how thankful we are for the
memorial gift that made the kitchen
renovation possible several years
ago.
You can help keep this space in tip
top shape in several ways:
• The kitchen has accumulated
many serving dishes and
containers (now crowding the
counters) - stop by after church
and see if anything is yours!
• Whenever you use the kitchen,
please take home, launder and
return the used dish towels.
• With the exception of SPROUT,
please don’t leave leftover food
behind - even in the refrigerator
or freezer, food doesn’t last
forever. Unless it’s milk, cream
or juice that can be used for
fellowship hour, please remember
to take home or discard leftover
food.
We appreciate your help - this will
insure the kitchen continues to be a
pleasure for Emanuel’s volunteers to
use, and is welcoming and ready for
guest cooks.

Volunteers Needed for
SPROUT’s Third Year
SPROUT, our Saturday morning
program had a successful second
year. The program invites
children from our Frog Hollow
neighborhood to come on Saturday
mornings, eat a healthy breakfast,
play active games in the gym and
leave with a bagged lunch. Our
attendance has continued to
average 18-22 children in 2nd
– 7th
grade each week. Our program
stopped for the summer on June 20.
This fall, we would like to continue
SPROUT, starting again on
October 3.
To continue the program into
the next school year we need
volunteers. If you haven’t
participated in SPROUT before but
are interested, we can use you. The
commitment is approximately two
hours every five weeks. Our most
pressing need is helpers in the gym
to coordinate the active games. We
could also use bakers to make
homemade cookies and brownies
for the lunches; registration people
to check the children in; cooks and a
clean-up crew in the kitchen; and
shoppers to purchase the groceries.
It has been a rewarding two years.
The children love coming to the
program and enjoy both the active
play in the gym and the good food.
If you would like to help out next
year please call Terri Dwyer at (860)
521-0714 or e-mail her at

Council Highlights
July 2015
Church Council Highlights
Council President Mark Hopper
called the meeting to order and
Pastor Corgan led devotions on
Matthew 5:14-16; Jesus says “You
are the light of the world. A city
built on a hill cannot be hid. No one
after lighting a lamp puts it under
the bushel basket, but on the
lampstand, and it gives light to all in
the house. In the same way, let your
light shine before others, so that
they may see your good works and
give glory to your Father in heaven.”
Pastor reflected on Emanuel as a
light shining in this corner of the
world and then closed with prayer.
The minutes of the June 23, 2015
Council meeting were accepted
unanimously.
Senior Pastor’s report: Pastor
Corgan updated Council on the
following activities:
• Visitations and group
conversations are ongoing. A
report is planned for November
including details for using the
information gathered.
• Vicar Dominic Smyth’s candidacy
process will probably involve his
approval in November and Synod
assignment in February 2016.
Beginning 8/1/15 as Ministerial
Assistant, Vicar Dominic’s
responsibilities will include
coordinating and leading the High
School Youth Group, networking
in the neighborhood, preaching,
teaching, visitation, and pastoral
care.
• An Outreach Plan, focusing on
inviting families to Emanuel, is
being worked on with Becki
Murphy.
• The positions of Treasurer and
Financial Secretary for 2016 have
been filled and will be announced
next month.
• A “Newest Members Party” will
be held on Sunday, August 30,
2015 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
• Recent new member Joy Elwell
will be initiating a Parish Health
Ministry here based on her prior
experience running a program in
Bronxville, NY. It will kick off on
Sunday October 18, 2015.
• Three Wignall and 20 Modeen
scholarships are being awarded.
Co-chairs Rosie and Bob Vojtek
and their team are to be
commended for their good work.
Treasurer’s report: Treasurer
Marschhausen presented the
Balance Sheet and the Profit and
Loss Budget Performance for June
and Year to Date. Income is good
and expenses are in line. President
Hopper noted that a Town Hall
meeting will be held in the fall to
explain the new Profit & Loss
format.
Music Request: Jonathan Reuning-
Scherer presented a proposal to
purchase a new 9’ Ritmuller concert
grand piano for the sanctuary. The
net cost of $31,000 factors in trade-
in on the current 7’ grand piano.
After discussion, a motion was made
that Council endorse and encourage
the music director to proceed on
the proposal as presented, including
the use of $15,000 from the Music
Endowment and the balance paid by
funds raised in the next few months
during which time the new piano
will be on loan at Emanuel. The
motion passed unanimously.
Financial Report: Treasurer
Marschhausen presented the major
points of his Second Quarter
Financial Report (circulated in
advance to all Council members).
After lengthy discussion, a motion
was presented affirming Council’s
support of its previous October 28,
2014 resolution and complete
implementation of Blum Shapiro’s
recommendations. The motion
passed. Pastor Corgan, President
Hopper and the entire Council
expressed their thanks for Treasurer
Marschhausen’s time and
thoroughness in compiling the
Second Quarter Financial Report.
Change in Insurance: Jane Wunder
reported on a change in insurance
carriers from Church Mutual to
Brotherhood Mutual effective on
our renewal date of August 1, 2015.
The Finance Committee, which is
responsible for insurance decisions,
endorsed this change which will
result in a net savings of $5,000 over
last year’s premium for the
equivalent or better coverage.
Stained Glass Window/North Wall
Update: Jane Wunder reported that
the engineers and contractors are
re-evaluating the extent of
temporary shoring originally
proposed. Repair work that can
proceed independent of the shoring
is being expedited. The severity of
the masonry deterioration has
increased the North Wall budget
estimate significantly; with savings
achieved on the East/West walls
and other additional savings, the
probable budget overage will be
approximately $50,000. The
Finance Committee will be
consulted on how to fund the
overage. A Congregational Meeting
to vote on the funding
recommendation will be held on
September 13, 2015.
Next Council meeting: Tuesday
September 22 at 7:00 p.m. in Luther
Hall
Hands on Hartford thanks Emanuel
for its monthly donation of $916.66
to help support our neighbors in
need. This gift will help change lives
in Hartford.

7:00 - 8:00 p.m.
■ Sunday, September 20,
11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
The topic of discussion will be our
church and our future together. I’m
eager to listen as you and others
identify strengths and weaknesses
of Emanuel as well as your hopes
and dreams for our congregation. I’ll
be sharing some features of Vision
2020 and asking for your
on-going support for Emanuel.
Please feel free to bring the whole
family. We want to and need to hear
from young and old and everyone
in-between.
You may sign up on the sheet in
Luther Hall or email Becki Murphy at

Thanks, Pastor Corgan
P.S. If I have not yet visited with
you, as part of my every member
visitation, your attending a session
will take the place of a visit. If you
and I have already met, please know
that you’re most welcome to attend
any of these sessions.
A Special Notice About Stephen
Ministry
Stephen Ministry is moving ahead
here at Emanuel. Our trained
Stephen Ministers are at work
providing personal care to members
of our congregation, and our
Stephen Leaders are at work looking
to the future and ways Stephen
Ministry might better serve our
members and neighbors.
We have two very important
announcements we would like to
share with the people of Emanuel.
The first is that our Stephen Ministry
program and the Stephen Ministry
program at Trinity Episcopal Church
on Sigourney Street in Hartford are
now a cooperative ministry shared
by both congregations. Our Stephen
Ministry leaders are meeting
together regularly. Our last series of
Stephen Minister training sessions
in the Fall of 2014 were done jointly
by our two congregations. Our
trained Stephen Ministers are
available to both congregations.
We believe this joint ministry will
not only strengthen our Stephen
Ministry programs, but in a broader
context will also help Emanuel and
Trinity get to know one another
better as sister congregations and
find others ways in which we might
work together.
The second announcement is that
we and Trinity will be starting a new
series of training sessions for new
Stephen Ministers. Here are the
details as we know them now.
Stephen Minister Training
Mondays, 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Beginning September 21 through
December 14
At Emanuel – Parish Building
Classroom
There are many more details to the
training to become a Stephen
Minister. If this is a service to your
Lord, your Church and your
neighbor to which you feel you are
called or in which you might be
interested, please speak with one of
Emanuel’s Stephen Leaders – Pastor
Corgan, Dr. Elizabeth Kieschnick or
Pastor Marschhausen. We will be
more than happy to answer your
questions and fill in the details
about this commitment to ministry.
Of course, if you have any questions
about Stephen Ministry – what it is,
how it might be of service to you,
how you might be able to serve, or
any other question or comment,
please speak with any of our leaders
or any of our Stephen Ministers –
Chet Brodnicki, Glenna Brodnicki,
Dick Allison or Deborah Corgan.
Thank you and please keep our
Stephen Ministry program in your
prayers.
- Pastor John Corgan, Elizabeth
Kieschnick and Pastor John
Marschhausen
The Antique Quilt was on
display in Luther Hall on May 24
This beautiful, antique quilt was
found in the tunnel cabinets of
Emanuel and sewn into its squares
are the names of the members of
the congregation from that time. A
list of the names is available in the
church office. It is hoped that you
will find a name that is familiar.
Please contact Judy Johnson and
Linnea Liljedahl if you have any
information or questions about the
quilt.
Ascentria thanks Emanuel for it’s gift
of $375.00 and says that our
support represents a fresh start and
a bright future for the courageous
individuals and families they serve.

The Craft Fair is Coming!
The Craft Fair is Coming!
The Annual Harvest Holly Craft Fair
Saturday, October 31, 2015
9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in Luther Hall
Please consider helping in the following areas:
• If you have a special craft that you do, please feel free to work at home and donate the items to
the Fair. As in the past, your special donations make the Fair unique and interesting. Home
crafters are a welcome addition to the work that the Tuesday and Thursday crafters
accomplish.
• Bake some goodies for our bake shop. In addition, relishes, jams and jellies are needed because
they are always popular.
• Help set-up on the Thursday and Friday before the Fair or work at the Fair.
Watch for sign-up sheets in late September and early October.
Look for more news in the October newsletters.
• Sign up in Luther Hall to bake cookies for the “Cookie Walk.”
• Tell or email your family and friends about the Fair!
• Visit the Fair on October 31!
Please note:
• Sign up on the blue “Welcome to Emanuel”
insert in the Sunday Bulletin.
• Contact Judy Johnson:
or 860-953-3064,
if you are interested.
Thank you in advance.
Visit the Fair on
October 31!
We’re Moving Things Around
We’re excited to share news of
some space changes taking place at
Emanuel:
■ The Sandberg Library and its
collection of books has been
moved to the Conference Room
in the parish building. This move
provides a bright, comfortable
environment to visit the library,
borrow both fiction and non-
fiction books, or sit and enjoy
reading. The reference books
(Luther’s Works, Bibles and
concordances) will reside in the
adjacent classroom and the
bound editions of 65 years of our
church newsletters will be the
lounge with the archive displays.
Stop in to browse after church on
Sundays or during the week at
your leisure!
■ The Nursery, now in the parish
building, is being moved to the
vacated library space in Luther
Hall. This brings the Nursery
closer and more convenient to
our worship space. Parents with
little ones will not have far to go
to find this comfortable
space with plenty of
toys and distractions
for even the fussiest!
■ The space vacated by
the Nursery on the
office level then
will allow us to
accommodate
changing staff
and program needs; gathering
space for small groups, office
space, and with any luck, some
nooks and crannies for our
storage needs.
We hope to have these space
changes completed in September.

Help Keep the Outside of
our Church Attractive and
Welcoming.
This year will be a real challenge
with all the construction going on.
During the past few years a few
people get together on Tuesdays
and plant the gardens, weed and
generally pick up trash. A
commitment of a couple hours a
week is all it takes. If you are not
retired, you could do it on Saturday.
Our small group is dealing with
health issues, but we are willing to
show you what to do. For further
information call Bernie
Johnson 860-649-6661.
Advent is only 90 days away…
It won’t be long before the trees
begin shedding their leaves and
thoughts turn to making pumpkin
pies and holiday cookies, raking
leaves or shoveling snow... and
preparing for Lucia and the
Christmas season. Each year, before
the first Sunday in Advent, the
wreaths and garlands are hung in
the nave and the lighted tree takes
its place up front. In the parish
building, the stairwells and
auditorium are decorated in
preparation for our Lucia Festival
and for the many guests attending
this annual traditional performance.
This fall we are looking to establish a
new team to take responsibility for
these once-a-year activities and to
gather the additional volunteers
needed to make this happen. The
decorations in the sanctuary go up
on November 27 or 28 (only two
days between Thanksgiving and the
first Sunday in Advent!) and those in
the parish building go up during the
week of November 30 (Lucia is on
Friday, December 4). Thanks go
to Max Nowak who has already
stepped up to handle the Christmas
trees - but he'll need additional
volunteers to help with setup. The
garlands and wreaths can be done
by a different team of 3-4 people.
It’s a real joy to welcome in the
Advent season by decorating our
worship and fellowship
spaces! Please consider if this is an
activity you might be willing to take
on this coming Advent season. If
you can help or if you have any
questions, please contact either
Jane Wunder
[email protected]) or Jonathan
Fairchild ([email protected]).

The Samaritan Fund
Just to remind you, the loose
offering received on the first Sunday
of the month goes to the Samaritan
Fund. The Samaritan Fund,
administered by Pastor Corgan,
is used to assist people in need.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry Please remember, there are always
prayer shawls available for anyone in
need of this symbol of love and caring.
Speak to Helen Johnson (860-649-
6661) or Karen in the church office.
New Flower Chart In order to encourage people to sign
up for altar flower donations, please
note the “Flower Chart” on the
bulletin board near the kitchen in
Luther Hall. You may use this chart to
pick a Sunday, or Sundays, when you
would like to donate altar flowers.
Checks (indicating the date for flowers
on the memo line) may be sent to the
church office or placed in the
offering plate with the form from the
blue sheet. We hope to have flower
donations for every Sunday in 2015!

Brighten someone’s day by
taking our beautiful altar
flowers to them!
Each Sunday after the late service,
we try to make arrangements for
the delivery of the altar flowers to
our hospitalized and/or shut-in
members. Claudia Bellis and Brook
Nowak do a great job with our flower
ministry. If you'd be willing to help on
a Sunday with a delivery, please look
for Claudia or Brook in or near the
Luther Hall kitchen. Thanks. You'll
surely brighten someone's day!
Please remember to bring in
donations of food (canned, non
perishable) for the MANNA Food
Pantry - we have a collection box
in Luther Hall. Thanks!
Large print worship bulletins are
available each Sunday morning.
Please let an usher know if you
would like one.

The Emanuel Archives
We ended our last article on the archives of Emanuel with
the pastoral position suddenly empty, Pastor Franzen
moving west, and the approval of the board of trustees
to buy property at the corner of Capitol Avenue and
Hungerford Street for $15,000 if the church property
could be sold. The existing church properties at Russ and
Babcock Streets were valued at $18,000. Emanuel had
occupied that church building for only seventeen years,
1892-1909 though it would still be several years before
they moved on to their new church location.
What were Emanuel's social activities like in the formative
years with most members living close to the church to
make it part of their everyday life? There was a Ladies' Aid
working together to raise money for the church and its
needs. Very notable was the young peoples society called
Fortuna. They had a well-provided reading room open
every day with books and publications in the native
Swedish language including newspapers. They
contributed time and material for the paper, Budboraren
(The Messenger), paid for by advertising to support
merchandisers of the community and members. To raise
money the Fortuna held meetings twice a month offering
lectures, debates, concerts and discussions to acquire
things for the church such as furnishings, a larger organ
and church stained glass windows.
The congregation actively raised monies for missions and
education of the Augustana synod, that included aid to
national emergencies and assistance to needy
congregations and orphanages elsewhere. Not to be
forgotten were the needy members of Emanuel, and
funds were kept to help them with food, fuel
and medical care.
Not unlike the needs Emanuel has today, our Pastor
Franzen hired an organist for $100 per year;
responsibilities included a choir, and concerts to raise
funds for expenses of the music needed. Church
maintenance required volunteers to open doors, keep
the church and property clean and to take care of the
furnace.
A better way to handle offerings on Sunday was found to
replace boxes with offering plates kept by six men,
elected to collect and count the monies before the
service, and to announce the amount offered following
the sermon; very effective they felt. The new organ
bought by Fortuna also found twelve volunteers needed
to pump the organ on Sundays.
Summer School for the children was held for eight weeks,
taught by Pastor. Annual meetings often involved extra
days because of the issues that had to be discussed and
voted on. To bring life of Emanuel back in 1905 to a
conclusion, Pastor Franzen worked very hard to get
members to celebrate weddings and baptisms in the
church sanctuary rather than in their homes; to console
their loses with funeral services in the church, rather than
the living room of their homes, for friends to gather in
grief. To say for sure, the church was a major part of its
members’ lives, each day of the week throughout the
year.

A Calumet LutherHostel for
Emanuel’s Seniors -
A Great Fall Get-a-way!
October 13 - 16, 2015
If stones could talk, what would
they say? This Lutherhostel will
include a special presentation
by Mr. Kevin Gardner on
"Discovering New England Stone
Walls." Kevin’s informal talk
covers a few of the main topics of
his book about New England
stone walls, The Granite Kiss,
touching on history, technique,
stylistic development, and
aesthetics. He explains how and
why New England came to
acquire its thousands of miles of
stone walls, the ways in which
they and other dry stone
structures were built, how their
styles emerged and changed over
time, and their significance to the
famous New England landscape.
In addition to the presentation,
we’ll have bible studies with our
guest chaplain, singing with Judy,
pontoon boat rides, napping,
walking by the pretty lake with
autumn colors, rocking in our
wooden rocking chairs on the
porch, shopping
at local antique
or country stores,
playing games
such as dominoes,
cribbage or
Skip-Bo at night
with a BIG bowl
of popcorn -
this will round
out our retreat
at beautiful
Calumet. The
food is fantastic. . .
with no dishes to wash at all!
Come and be with others, have
lots of fun and see the wonders
of God!
Contact Jan or John Starkes at
860-561-2897 ASAP, so we can
start planning your reservation
and, if you’re interested,
transportation on the van.
Space is limited and we have
other church guests who will
travel with us in the big, new
van!
Please note: Alice, a
representative from Calumet,
will be in touch with you for final
booking and details. There are no
single rooms available.
