Food for Friends News

Baby Bottle Campaign Gives Alternatives to Abortion Help Catholic Charities' Pregnancy, Parenting, and Adoption Program provide assistance to pregnant women and women with babies through the Mother and Child Assistance Fund by taking a baby bottle from the Pack-N-Play located in the Gathering Space. Fill it with your spare change or write a check and bring it back to church by Nov. 10th. Donations will go directly to assisting women across Southern Minnesota who are choosing life for their babies. Catholic Charities assists more than 150 women of all faiths every year.

October’s food shelf items: a variety of Pastas and Sauces. No glass, please. In November, a collection of food items will also begin for filling Thanksgiving baskets that will be distributed about mid December. Watch for the bargains and shop anytime. Items to collect are canned vegetables and fruit, instant potatoes, and boxed stuffing to name a few. Stephanie Collura will once again coordinate this wonderful effort. Not only will our Food for Friends students have the opportunity to take part, we can add others if you know of a family from our parish in need. They will need to register for this project. More details to come. See the display in the Gathering Space for more information on their needs for the upcoming months.

Part 2/2: “What is the Liturgy of the Hours?”

“In the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, the first document of the Council, the hours of morning and evening are ‘the two hinges’ of the hours of the day. More scripture was added and finally a four-week cycle of praying the 150 psalms was legislated. In 1971, an Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours was promulgated…The structure for the official Liturgy of the Hours is as follows: an invitatory, a hymn, two or three psalms followed by a respective prayer, a canticle from scripture, a psalm of praise with a collect, a selection from scripture, a response, a Gospel canticle, the Lord’s Prayer, a prayer, blessing, and an optional sign of peace in a communal setting. Even though clerics are obligated to pray the hours, and laypeople are not, many parishes pray one or two of the ‘hinges’ of the Liturgy of the Hours: Morning Prayer and/or Evening Prayer. Thus, during Advent and Lent, parishes may offer Evening Prayer. The Order of Christian Funerals, 348, states that vigils (or wakes) may take place in the context of Evening Prayer as well as the option of Morning Prayer on the day of the funeral. These are just a few ways in which the hours have been opened up to more and more of the laity in order to ‘pray without ceasing.’”1

This past summer, I had the opportunity to attend a weeklong conference on music and the liturgy. Every morning and evening was spent praying the Liturgy of the Hours, complete with music. I have been praying with the idea of offering morning or evening prayer here at Resurrection, though without music to begin.

Timing, of course, is of the essence. If you have any ideas about what time(s) of day might work, please drop me an email, phone call, or even come in and see me. I would love to make this opportunity available for those who want it!

Faith Formation

News for Sheila, Birth-KG; Grades 6-12, Children and Youth Ministry, RCIA [email protected] or 288-5528, x 101

Grades 1-5: We will have faith formation classes for grades 1-5 on Monday, October 21st at 4:30 and 6:00pm. The children are learning about how to pray silently and some classes will have the opportunity to go to Fr. Winkels chapel to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Parents can help their children by allowing time for silent prayer at home. First Reconciliation: On Monday, November 4th, all the children preparing to receive the sacrament of reconciliation will be participating in the Reconciliation Learning Centers with parents. The centers will be set up in Fr. Zenk Hall and take about an hour to complete. Families are welcome to come anytime between 4:00-7:00pm. Virtues in Practice: For October, we are practicing the virtue of friendship and the third, fourth, and fifth graders are learning about St. Basil and St. Gregory, who became friends at school in Athens. They were both really smart, but insteadof competing for who got the highest grade, they competed over who could give up the highest honors to the other. They wanted to be true Christians and decided to help each other grow in virtue. Both of them became bishops. Together they helped defend the Catholic faith and joined other bishops to writethe Nicene Creed. The Apostles’ Creed came first. Years later, there was some confusion about part of what we believe, so St. Basil and St. Gregory met at Nicaea to add details to some of the phrases of the creed. St. Basil and St. Gregory, pray for us!
