Goals and Objectives The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete high school and enroll in and graduate from college. The program strives to raise participants’ grade point average, proficiency on standardized tests, mastery of rigorous courses, high school graduation rate, postsecondary enrollment, and postsecondary degree attainment. Overview

Upward Bound at the University of South Florida provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from first-generation or low-income families. The program provides intensive preparation for college through academic year tutoring and rigorous summer instruction with a campus residential experience.

Quick Facts

Since 1966, almost 3,000 students have participated in USF Upward Bound.

More than 99% of students who complete USF Upward Bound graduate from high school; the state average is 76%.

More than 95% of students who complete USF Upward Bound are accepted into college; 90% of students have enrolled in a postsecondary institution.

Academic Year Component

Upward Bound students come to the USF campus on select Saturdays and weeknights to receive tutoring in math, science, literature, composition, Spanish, social studies, and study skills. Additionally, students attend seminars that offer guidelines for enrolling and succeeding in college. Upward Bound counselors also visit students at their schools to provide academic advising.

Summer Residential Component

During the six-week summer component on the USF campus, students are exposed to a variety of educational, cultural, and social experiences.

Upward Bound provides instruction in math, laboratory science, literature, composition, and Spanish.

Class sizes are small, and students are placed based on their individual needs for instruction.

Counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment, and work study activities are offered.

During the final three weeks, juniors and seniors reside on campus and participate in counselor-supervised recreational activities.

Collaborations with Pharmacy, Engineering, Global Sustainability, Business, and Florida Mental Health Institute at USF provide interactive labs, research experiences, seminars, and career guidance.
