Introduction

STEP ONE:

1. - State Quote

- Recopy the critical lens statement (the quote) word for word and leave it in quotation marks. Be sure to state who said the quote or to note that it was stated by an anonymous speaker.

Example: John Lyly once said, “All is fair in love and war.”

Introduction

STEP TWO:

2.Interpret Quote. In other words, put the quote into your own words.

Example: This quotation means that no rules apply when it comes to getting what you want.

Introduction

STEP THREE:

3. Agree or disagree with the quote (without saying “I”) and very briefly explain why.

Example: This quotation holds true in both life and in literature because when people or characters in books want something back enough, nothing will hold them back.

IntroductionSTEP FOUR:

4.Thesis

- Finally, give the title, author and genre (TAG) of the books you are about to discuss and the literary elements, and connect them to the quote.

- Be sure to include proper punctuation around the title of the story.

Example: In the drama, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, and the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, conflicts and themes demonstrate that if something means enough to an individual, it is worth fighting for regardless of what’s right or wrong.
