Tis the Season to Reduce Your Water Usage Winter is a good time to reduce the number of days and minutes your irrigation controller runs. You may even be able to shut off some of your irrigation zones, depending on the type of plants in your landscape. In an effort to water efficiently, irrigation controllers should be adjusted on a monthly basis. A great solution is to install a Weather Based Irrigation Controller (WBIC). WBIC’s automatically adjust your watering times with the changes in the weather! The City also offers no-cost water audits for your home. Trained staff review outdoor irrigation and offer tips to help you use water more efficiently. RESOURCES

Holiday Solid Waste ServicesDuring the holiday season, the City’s solid waste collection service will not take place on Christmas and New Year’s Day. Trash service will resume the following day. For instance, if your normal track pickup is on Tuesday, service will be provided on Wednesday and so forth.

Proper Christmas Tree DisposalPlease remove all ornaments and decorations; remove stand/base and place the tree next to your trash bin for collection. Christmas trees are collected during your normal trash pick-up days.

Purchasing New Holiday LightsConsider ENERGY STAR Certified LED’s! LED light strands use 75% less energy than conventional incandescent lights and last up to 10 times longer! They also remain cool to the touch and reduce fire risk.

Leaving Town for the Holidays? If you have a gas water heater, turn it to “Pilot” or vacation setting when you are out of town. If you have an electric water heater, shut off the circuit breaker. This action prevent energy loss and increase savings. Learn about residential programs and tips to help you save money and energy by visiting SCE.com and SoCalGas.com

Public Works Plant CornerPlant Name: Bush Sunflower (Encelia californica)

Size: 3’h x 5’w

The cool wet months of winter are ideal for planting native species. Root systems can be established before the stress of summer begins. Gardeners can generally begin to reduce the amount of irrigation to new plantings by the first spring. Try planting Bush Sunflower. A small deciduous shrub with loose clusters of yellow daisy-like flowers. Light summer water will extend blooming. Cut back every two years to maintain shape.
